In 1993, Dennis Shanklin and his team converged their extensive experience in civil engineering, environmental construction, and product manufacturing to establish what is now EFI USA.   • When gas production on a covered lagoon drifts down and the feedstock has not changed, check the volume before the biology. Anaerobic digestion removes volatile solids. It does not remove sand, grit, struvite, or lignin-bound fiber. Those arrive with the waste stream and settle. On the lagoon closures we have run, the sludge layer commonly measures 20 to 40 percent of basin volume. Retention time is volume divided by flow, so a basin that has lost a third of its depth underperforms whatever the biology is doing. Under a gas-tight cover none of this is visible. You cannot run a boat, and walking survey gear across a floating membrane risks the cover. Measurement depends on the access built in at construction. Survey ports, sealed penetrations, sludge transfer piping to the low point. Ask when the basin was last surveyed.   • A palm oil mill in Tecun Uman, Guatemala runs 720 tons of fresh fruit a day and discharges more than 1,000 cubic meters of effluent in the same 24 hours. EFI fabricated and installed the anaerobic lagoon covers and the biogas collection system at Grupo Hame's Olmeca III mill, completed in 2009. That stream yields about 24,000 cubic meters of biogas a day at 54 to 65 percent methane, enough to run generators at 2 megawatts continuously. The mill powers itself on waste it already had to manage. Olmeca III is one of more than 300 covered lagoon digester systems we have installed across Latin America. Feedstocks change from site to site. Dairy manure, swine waste, and food processing effluent each behave differently. The engineering sequence does not change: characterize the stream first, then size the cover and gas train to the gas it will realistically produce.

    On a covered digester, capture is decided at the perimeter trench and at every pipe boot and hatch. A cover that is 98 percent sealed is far from 98 percent effective, because methane lost at a seam never reaches the meter. That is the number an owner pays for. The cover is a seal, not a lid. An open anaerobic lagoon is already making biogas long before we arrive. The bacteria breaking down dairy, swine, or food-processing waste do not wait for equipment. Roughly 55 to 75 percent of that gas is methane, and on an uncovered surface it drifts into the air. A gas-tight cover captures what the basin was already producing and losing. Many of the digesters we build are retrofits over basins that treated waste for years. The treatment worked. The gas just had nowhere to go. We build these systems.

  • One inch of rain on one acre of floating cover is roughly 27,000 gallons. A cover built to hold water in has to shed water off its own top surface, or it pools and that load works against the panel welds and the perimeter anchoring. So a continuous cover on a larger reservoir usually gets a defined-sump layout. Floats and ballast weights are arranged in a pattern that channels rainwater toward sumps, where it is pumped off. Perimeter anchoring takes the water-level swings of a working reservoir for years without pulling loose, and on exposed sites it carries wind uplift too. We build these systems. Covers are one of five lines of work for us, alongside liners, biogas systems, oxygen injection, and covered lagoons.

  • An open reservoir in a dry climate can lose four to seven feet of water off its surface in a single year. Across a multi-acre impoundment, that is millions of gallons that were captured, moved, or paid for once, gone before they ever reach a crop, a process line, or a tap. A floating cover keeps that water in the reservoir. It is a flexible geomembrane that rests on the water, rises and falls with the level, and anchors around the perimeter, taking the surface out of contact with sun and wind. It also shades out algae and keeps dust, debris, and waterfowl off the water, so what stays behind is cleaner. We have built geosynthetic systems for water and waste impoundments for more than 30 years. On a storage project the cover, the liner beneath it, and the anchoring are one system. We build all three.
