Renewable Energy Power Generation

Teaming up with nature to build the most ecological wind farm yet.

About us

With Ecowende, we are at the forefront of the future as we build the most ecological wind farm yet. We want to help make a positive contribution to biodiversity and thus accelerate the large-scale roll-out of offshore wind in the Netherlands and beyond. We know that renewable energy must become more sustainable. To contribute to this, we will implement various innovations to stimulate a flourishing ecosystem and realise a minimal impact on marine mammals, birds and bats, and a vibrant marine life. Our wind farm will be located about 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast. With an installed capacity of approximately 760 MW, we can make about 3% of the current Dutch electricity demand greener. The plan is to have Ecowende fully commissioned in 2026. Follow us to learn more about Ecowende, our innovations, and latest developments!

  • Vestas and Ecowende finalist for IPMA Global Awards 2026 🏆   We’re proud that Vestas, in partnership with Ecowende, has been named a finalist in the 2026 IPMA: International Project Management Association Global Awards for Large & Mega-Sized Projects, recognising project excellence in delivering the Hollandse Kust West offshore wind farm. Delivering a project of this scale takes more than technology. It requires strong project management, rigorous planning and close collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, logistics, installation and commissioning. With safety, efficiency and execution at scale at the heart of everything we do.   For Ecowende, project success means more than delivering renewable energy at scale. It means rethinking how offshore wind is designed and built, with ecology at the heart of the project. We are teaming up with nature to minimise our impact on birds, bats and marine life, while testing innovative solutions designed to enhance biodiversity. Through extensive monitoring, research and data sharing, we are also building knowledge that can help shape the next generation of offshore wind farms.   “Being named a finalist is a recognition of what can be achieved when strong project execution and an ambitious approach to nature go hand in hand. At Ecowende, we believe the energy transition and nature transition are not separate challenges — they need to move forward together,” said Folkert Visser, Project Director at Ecowende   Being recognised among the world’s leading large and mega-sized projects is a testament to the expertise, collaboration and commitment of everyone involved; at Vestas, Ecowende and across our partner network. • 🐬How do underwater construction sounds affect the hearing of harbour porpoises? And does it matter whether the sound is continuous or interrupted by quiet moments? New research, carried out by SEAMARCO and partners, shows that it does. Ronald Kastelein, Director of SEAMARCO, explains: "This study demonstrates how important the duration of quiet intervals between sound pulses is for hearing recovery after exposure to loud underwater noise. These findings are highly relevant for understanding the impact of intermittent sounds, such as impact pile driving, on harbour porpoise hearing. By reducing the strike rate and increasing the time between pulses, the ear has more opportunity to recover, helping to reduce the risk of permanent hearing damage." The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge that helps make offshore wind development more compatible with marine life. Research like this is an essential part of Ecowende's mission to accelerate the energy transition while working in harmony with nature. • Behind every milestone at sea is a team of dedicated professionals making it happen 💪   When we installed the foundations for our offshore wind farm, Kevin V., superintendent aboard Van Oord's Boreas, played a key role in coordinating one of the most complex phases of construction. In this Day in the Life video, he shares what it takes to safely deliver offshore operations and what life is really like on board one of the world's most advanced offshore installation vessels.   Meanwhile, Boreas has moved on to the next chapter and is installing our wind turbines. At 175 metres long and equipped with a crane capable of lifting more than 3,000 tonnes, Boreas was purpose-built to transport and install the next generation of offshore wind turbines and foundations. It is also the first offshore installation vessel of its kind to run on methanol, reducing its carbon footprint by more than 78%, while its battery system and advanced emission-control technology further minimise fuel consumption and emissions.   People, innovation, and nature go hand in hand. Kevin's story offers a glimpse into the teamwork, expertise and pioneering technology that are helping us build a wind farm designed to team up with nature. 🎥 Watch the video and step aboard Boreas.   #OneTeam #Boreas #DayInTheLife Sif Group Vestas Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. 🎥 MatZwart

  • Every observation counts when you're building a wind farm that teams up with nature 🌊🦭 Long before our monitoring sensors are fully operational, our offshore crews are already helping us better understand the marine environment. By recording sightings of birds, seals, harbour porpoises and other marine life, they provide valuable insights into the species that share our wind farm zone. Crew members can submit their observations using our species sightings card or through HUB Ocean's Citizen Sea app. Together, these contributions help build a richer picture of biodiversity at sea while strengthening our commitment to nature-inclusive offshore wind. To recognise this important effort, we celebrate the best sightings. Recently, our Operations Director Klaas G. Keuning visited the crew of the ESVAGT A/S Faraday in the port of IJmuiden with a well-deserved cake. 🍰 The crew - many of them Vestas engineers - earned this recognition after submitting the highest number of species observations in June. 🙏 A big thank you to everyone keeping their eyes on nature while working offshore. Your observations make a real difference. #TeamingUpWithNature #OneTeam #Biodiversity #OffshoreWind #CitizenScience Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

  • 🌍 Eco-scour: from protection to habitat 🐟 Our partner Van Oord has successfully completed the installation of the scour protection and rock berms at the Ecowende wind farm. In total, 300,000 tonnes of rock were placed to protect turbine foundations and critical cable infrastructure. But these rocks do more than safeguard our offshore assets. Together with Van Oord, we developed a nature-inclusive eco-scour protection design that combines infrastructure resilience with habitat creation. Ecological bays, varied rock sizes and habitat-forming crevices create shelter and new opportunities for marine life to thrive around the wind turbines. A key achievement was the successful installation of eco-rock berms, including rocks weighing up to 450 kg (the largest ever installed by a stone releasing installation (SRI) vessel), setting a new benchmark for integrating engineering excellence with nature enhancement. And while marine life is already finding new places to flourish beneath the surface, the wind farm has also started generating its first renewable electricity above it. A great example of how the energy transition and nature enhancement can go hand in hand 🤝 Thank you to Van Oord and everyone involved in reaching this milestone. #teamingupwithnature #ecoscour #offshorewind Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. 📷 Flying Focus

  • Finishing Strong as One Team Construction of our wind farm is now in full swing. All 52 monopiles, all cables and first wind turbines have been successfully installed. At six locations, we deployed innovative installation techniques that significantly reduced underwater noise, reinforcing our commitment to team up with nature. We also completed the first Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flight beyond the 12-nautical-mile zone to our wind farm for ecological surveys. Opening new possibilities for safe, efficient, and low-impact environmental monitoring. These achievements, and many others, reflect the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of everyone involved, and our shared ambition to set a new benchmark for ecological offshore wind farms. As we enter the final months of construction, our focus is clear: finishing strong. Finishing strong means continuing to support one and another as One Team, putting safety and ecology first in the final stretch. In this video, team members of Ecowende and our partners share what finishing strong means to them. #OneTeam #FinishStrong #TeamingUpWithNature Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. 🎥 MatZwart

  • 💚Family Day: share what we do and inspire the next generation💚 Recently, we welcomed colleagues and their families to our Onshore Service Base in IJmuiden for a day of discovery, connection, and hands-on learning, powered by Delft Offshore Turbine (DOT). From designing wind turbine blades in the Wind Rotor Challenge to building miniature cities powered by renewable energy, young engineers (and plenty of enthusiastic adults!) explored how offshore wind works. Beyond the technology, the day was about sharing what we do, and to inspire the people closest to us. As Ecowende’s Cost & Finance Engineer Yasuhiro Shiraki reflected: "My family and I had a wonderful time taking part in the Family Day. The blade design challenge was especially popular with my children. By experimenting with different blade sizes and angles, they gained a fun and engaging understanding of how wind power works. It was also great to show my family our ecology initiatives and explain the diverse eco-innovations we are undertaking both on and beneath the sea. It proved to be a wonderful opportunity for my family to deepen their interest in our project and in offshore wind power itself." For Londeka Maloka, HSSE Advisor, the day brought together both her professional and personal worlds: "Watching my sons explore the world of offshore wind through fun activities while learning about the importance of safety reminded me why I do what I do. It was wonderful to share a small part of that journey with the people who mean the most to me." Of course, no Family Day would have been complete without selfies with our virtual safety colleague Lex, great food from the food trucks, and plenty of conversations between colleagues and their loved ones. A big thank you to everyone who joined us and to Jbace eventmanagement who helped organise such a memorable day. #OneTeam #TeamingUpWithNature #NextGeneration Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.

  • Telling the story behind the North Sea energy transition Last Friday, documentary maker Kadir Van Lohuizen visited Eemshaven, where the Vestas turbines for Ecowende are being prepared for transport offshore. There, he spoke with Nils de Baar, President of Global Offshore at Vestas, and Klaas G. Keuning, Operations Director at Ecowende, for his new documentary project on the energy transition around the North Sea. Few places illustrate the scale and complexity of this transition as clearly as Eemshaven. As countries around the North Sea accelerate their shift to renewable energy, the region has become a showcase of the opportunities that come with building a sustainable future. Nils highlighted the growing role of offshore wind: "What comes through clearly is the momentum offshore wind is building. It is strengthening Europe’s energy security, reducing reliance on imported fuels and helping shield economies from volatile energy prices." In his documentary, Kadir also explores how offshore wind development can be done in harmony with nature. An ambition that lies at the heart of Ecowende. As Klaas explained: "Offshore wind is about much more than generating renewable energy. The real challenge is finding ways to accelerate the energy transition while strengthening nature and creating long-term value for society." We are grateful to Kadir, Geert Rozinga, Frederique Melman and team for including Ecowende in this important project, which will be broadcast by VPRO next year. #TeamingUpWithNature #OffshoreWind #EnergyTransition #NorthSea #NatureInclusiveDesign Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.
