We use the law to advance a bold, vibrant democracy for all people.
About us
Democracy depends on a government that works for all people. Since 2017, Democracy Forward has filed over 650 legal actions and records requests challenging unlawful acts, fought vigorously in court on behalf of those harmed, and notched victories that have improved lives and protected the rule of law. In statehouses, courtrooms, and communities across the country, we still see threats to democracy every day. Democracy Forward is expanding to use new strategies that oppose abuses of power and fight for the promise of democracy on behalf of all Americans.

Last week, Legal Director Audrey Wiggins, Legal Director Brian Netter, and Staff Attorney for Strategic Initiatives Corenza Jean traveled to Nashville for the National Bar Association's Annual Convention. For more than a century, the NBA has shaped the legal landscape. Today, the NBA continues to serve as a critical partner, to help us all meet this moment and confront the challenges facing our communities with bold determination and strategic vision.

To commemorate Disability Pride Month, civil rights attorney and University of Michigan professor Samuel Bagenstos joined Director Audrey Wiggins in our office to talk to our team about his career in civil rights litigation. Bagenstos has successfully argued cases at all levels, including the Supreme Court, that have advanced disability rights at critical points in the movement. His work, and the work of so many in the disability rights and advocacy spaces, has been critical in working toward a more just society for all.

The Trump-Vance admin is prioritizing politics over people by making unlawful changes to a program that helps low-income Americans access healthcare. People nationwide could lose access to critical family planning services – from birth control, to cancer screenings, to STI testing. We’re fighting back.

NEWS: We filed a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of former Director Janice Lachance, and Acting Director Rob S. of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management urging a federal appeals court to reverse a Merit Systems Protection Board decision that threatens longstanding civil service protections. Civil service protections are not obstacles to effective government – they are essential to it. The Trump-Vance administration’s attempt to fundamentally reshape the federal workforce would make government less capable of serving the American people. We urge the court to reject these attempts to expand presidential power in order to weaken the civil service. Our team on this brief includes Michael Ceja Martinez, Webb Lyons, Joshua Salzman and Elena Goldstein. https://lnkd.in/etkEHYjT
