📢 New Publication Highlight Congratulations to Shih Wen Chen, Navid Niknafs, Pavel Simacek, and Suresh Advani on their recent publication in Experimental and Computational Multiphase Flow. Voids caused by trapped bubbles remain a major challenge in liquid composite molding, affecting the quality and performance of composite parts. In our recent paper published in Experimental and Computational Multiphase Flow, we experimentally characterized bubble mobility through different fabric architectures and developed physics-based models to predict bubble transport behavior. The study demonstrates that bubble mobility is strongly influenced by the ratio of the initial bubble diameter to the fabric tow-gap width. Larger diameter-to-gap ratios resulted in higher mobility, while resin viscosity had a comparatively limited effect within the investigated range. This work provides a predictive framework for understanding bubble transport and can help guide processing strategies to minimize void formation and improve composite manufacturing reliability. A recent UD College of Engineering graduate Dr. Tania Lavaggi, shared what UD Center For Composite Materials meant to her during her PhD education. "My experience at CCM reinforced my passion for advanced composites research. With the strong support and guidance of my Ph.D. advisors (Suresh Advani and John Gillespie), along with many valuable collaborations with fellow students and researchers at the Center, I was able to grow technically, professionally, and personally. Long-term performance data is essential for advancing the use of composites in infrastructure. A recent publication from Jovan Tatar Ph.D. Tatar and collaborators revisits one of the UD Center For Composite Materials' early CFRP-strengthened steel bridge demonstration projects more than two decades after installation. The study shows that the strengthening system has continued to perform successfully while also identifying opportunities to improve installation practices, moisture protection, and inspection methods for long-term durability. This work highlights the value of returning to pioneering research to better understand how composite materials perform in real-world service and to guide future infrastructure solutions. More than 20 years ago, my colleagues at the University of Delaware / UD Center For Composite Materials, John Gillespie and Michael Chajes, were among the early pioneers in demonstrating the use of CFRP composites to strengthen in-service steel highway bridges in the U.S. Many years later, after joining the University of Delaware, I had the unique opportunity to revisit one of those original demonstration projects on I-95 and answer a question that has been waiting for over two decades: How did CFRP actually perform in the field? The results are encouraging, but they also reveal important lessons. The CFRP system remained bonded and continued to perform well after 22 years of service. At the same time, we found that workmanship defects and moisture ingress can lead to hidden galvanic corrosion beneath the composite, something that cannot be detected through routine visual inspections. Although FRP strengthening can perform well over the long term, we still need better installation quality control, improved detailing to prevent moisture ingress, and practical nondestructive methods to assess the condition of the steel substrate beneath the composite.
