As conflicts have erupted around the world, governments and MoDs are recognizing the urgent, immediate need for space-based intelligence, and the cost to build and launch satellites has dropped significantly, changing how they acquire satellite imagery and AI-enabled intelligence capabilities. This week, BlackSky CTO Patrick O'Neil joins On Orbit to discuss the dynamics underpinning international adoption of sovereign space technologies — from subscription-based assured access to commercial imagery and analytics to fully sovereign systems, real-time dynamic monitoring, and how AI helps unlock critical insights from Earth observation data. • Last weekend, Italy celebrated Ferragosto, a peak summer holiday rooted in the ancient Roman festival of Feriae Augusti. On August 15, Gen-3 captured perfectly aligned umbrellas in Rimini as visitors converged on the coastlines. From Rimini to the Amalfi Coast, beaches swelled with visitors, mountain towns filled with day-trippers escaping the heat and evening fireworks lit up seaside promenades.

  • BlackSky won a seven-figure, multi-year contract for combined Assured and On-Demand subscriptions with an international customer. Following a successful initial pilot, the customer quickly signed an expanded deal for our integrated, low-latency imagery and AI-enabled analytics services. “BlackSky continues to drive recurring, high-margin revenue through key international subscription deals with our foundational Gen-2 dynamic monitoring constellation and ever-expanding best-in-class 35-centimeter class Gen-3 constellation,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky CEO. “This contract marks a significant increase in value from the original pilot program and exemplifies the continued momentum that BlackSky experiences as more international customers quickly scale up commitments in support of their long-term mission critical needs.” As part of this contract, the customer will have access to global coverage through an On-Demand subscription, augmented by a parallel Assured subscription that will give operators premier access to imagery and analytics within the priority regional area of operations.
