New research from Blackbaud Institute is starting to show patterns in how people are experiencing AI across the social impact sector right now. Teams are putting effort into AI. Donors are forming expectations about it. The benefits aren’t evenly distributed yet. That sits at the centre of this research on what drives AI impact and trust in the social sector. You can read it here: https://blkb.co/4uK6xAr A few things stood out to me: 1. For social impact professionals, effort is already there 85% of professionals report using AI at work, yet only about a third said they feel it’s being used very effectively across their organisation. In the research, this often shows up as individual learning moving faster than organisational alignment. People are building their own ways of working with AI, but the connection to broader outcomes is still emerging. 2. For donors, transparency shapes trust There is a clear expectation gap. Around 76% of donors expect transparency in how AI is used, while only 26% of organisations reported that they disclosed this information in their communications. In a sector built on relationships, this becomes part of the experience. How AI is communicated and made visible can influence whether people feel comfortable continuing to engage. 3. A small group of organisations are moving at a different pace Around 10% of organisations reported reaching what you might refer to as a more “mature”, “AI‑adaptive” state. These organisations are connecting how AI is used across teams with how it supports outcomes. Governance, data readiness, and clearer expectations for use tend to show up more consistently in these environments. A few reflections from me: The technology is only one part of the picture. How organisations support people to use it, and how that use is experienced externally, shapes what happens next. This is where I think a lot of the focus will continue to sit: How individual organisations work towards shared practice How transparency shows up in real interactions How trust builds over time through experience That’s where impact can start to take shape.

Most social impact organizations aren’t struggling to access AI. They’re struggling to turn it into meaningful results. Our latest Blackbaud Institute research shows 85% of social impact professionals are using AI, but only about one-third see strong organizational impact.        In this article, I’m sharing why closing that gap is more important now than ever for the fundraising sector. If you’re in the social impact space and looking to move from AI experimentation to real mission outcomes, I hope you’ll give it a read. #blackbaud #socialimpact #artificialintelligence #nonprofits

  • Many social impact orgs are adopting AI. Not all are seeing meaningful results. We surveyed 1,300+ social impact professionals to understand why. One thing stood out: Adoption isn’t the differentiator. The organizations seeing stronger outcomes aren’t just experimenting, they’re investing in: ✔️ governance ✔️ data readiness ✔️ transparency ✔️ intentional use In this video, Kate Averett Anderson, Blackbaud Institute's Research and Publications Lead, breaks down what we’re calling the “AI maturity dividend” and why these foundations matter more than the technology itself.
