The Hawaiʻi State Capitol was recognized with a Centennial Award at last week's AIA Honolulu Design Awards Gala. Celebrating projects whose significance has only grown with time, the Centennial Award recognizes architecture that continues to serve its community for generations. More than five decades after its completion, the Hawaiʻi State Capitol remains Hawaiʻi's civic heart, embodying openness, connection to place, and the spirit of aloha through its enduring design. Originally completed in 1969, the Capitol was designed to reflect Hawaiʻi's unique identity through symbolism deeply rooted in place. Today, it continues to fulfill its original purpose as the home of Hawaiʻi's government while standing as one of the state's most enduring civic landmarks. Mahalo to AIA Honolulu for bringing together Hawaiʻi's design community to celebrate excellence in architecture, and congratulations to all of this year's award recipients. We are proud to celebrate alongside the many firms, project teams, and students whose work continues to strengthen our communities and help build a better Hawaiʻi. How do we build a more resilient Hawaiʻi while remaining rooted in the people, places, and values that define our islands? That question guided the latest installment of AHL's Art + Design + Architecture panel series, bringing together leaders from government, academia, sustainability, and environmental science for an evening of thoughtful dialogue on the future of Hawaiʻi. Together, our panelists explored resilience through many lenses, from climate adaptation and Indigenous knowledge to coral reef restoration, community well-being, and cross-sector collaboration. The conversation reinforced that resilience isn't built by any one profession or organization, but through partnership, shared responsibility, and a commitment to place. Mahalo to our distinguished panelists: • Dr. L. Kealoha Fox, PhD, City and County of Honolulu Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and ResiliencyKalani Kaʻanāʻanā, Hawaii Green Growth UN Local2030 Hub • Dr. Chip Fletcher, PhD, University of Hawaii at Manoa - School of Ocean and Earth Science and TechnologyChristina Jayne, Hawai‘i DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources A special mahalo to Chef Shayne, for preparing a thoughtfully curated pupu menu inspired by local flavors and hospitality, and to KaiHonua LLC for capturing the evening and producing the event video. Whether you attended the event or couldn't join us in person, the full panel discussion is now available. 🎥 Watch the full conversation here: https://lnkd.in/gNzTD6T3

Today marks 20 years since the State of Hawaiʻi officially proclaimed June 16, 2006 as Architects Hawai‘i Day in recognition of our firm’s longstanding contributions to shaping the places and communities that define our islands. At the time, the proclamation honored Architects Hawai‘i Ltd. as the firm celebrated 60 years of design excellence. Twenty years later, as we commemorate our 80th year, this milestone serves as a meaningful reminder of the generations of visionary leaders, dedicated team members, valued clients, and transformative projects that have shaped our journey. We are proud of the legacy built over eight decades and grateful for the opportunity to continue designing spaces that serve Hawai‘i, strengthen communities, and inspire what comes next.

What if the people who use a space help design it? That's exactly what happened when AHL sat down with students at Hanalani Schools in Mililani, O'ahu, for a collaborative design charrette. As part of the programming and conceptual design phase for campus improvements—including a new Innovation Lab, STEAM classrooms, and a future Innovation & Arts Center—our team invited students to step into the role of designer. Led by Director of Design Lester Ng, alongside Kevin Raley, AIA, NCARB, Monica Roh, and Jing Zheng, students sketched ideas, pinned up concepts, and shared how they learn, create, and connect. Architecture students from University of Hawaii at Manoa also joined in as externs, getting a firsthand look at how collaborative, client-centered design actually works. The result? Real insights that are now shaping design decisions from flexible makerspaces to informal gathering spaces and the preservation of the campus lawn. "Engaging students at this stage grounds the project in real experience. It challenges our assumptions and helps us create spaces that are not only functional, but genuinely supportive of how students live and learn every day," said Senior Associate Kevin Raley, AIA, NCARB. The most meaningful spaces aren't just designed for people. They're designed with them. 🔗 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gAFPaRxe
