This is what it looks like when quantum networking leaves the lab! Aliro is putting field-ready, entanglement-based quantum key distribution to work on ABQ-Net, New Mexico’s open-access quantum network testbed. This isn’t a fiber spool sitting on a lab bench. ABQ-Net runs across 50 kilometers of leased ISP fiber, including aerial fiber exposed to real environmental conditions. Aliro’s software, AlirOS, uses the BBM92 protocol to coordinate quantum key generation with Qunnect hardware, so a router can request quantum-generated key material as its needed. W think this is the part of quantum networking that deserves a lot more attention: making quantum hardware, software, fiber infrastructure, and classical networking equipment work together as an operational system.
