Pattern Animation with Time Displacement in After Effects Input: Pattern tiles created in Illustrator, main composition, pattern composition, displacement map Step 1: Setup • Create 3–5 pattern tiles in Illustrator • In After Effects, create a main composition with dimensions divisible by pattern size (e.g., 2000×2000 for a 200×200 pattern) • Create a nested composition matching the pattern size • Import the pattern tiles into the nested composition Be careful to create a comp size easily divisible by the size of your pattern. Step 2: Animation • Transition between pattern shapes smoothly within the nested composition • Position the pattern in the top-left of the main composition • Apply the CC_Repetile effect to tile the pattern across the entire canvas • Create an adjustment layer above the pattern • Apply the Time Displacement effect with max displacement time = T seconds (e.g., 3 seconds) • Create a displacement map (solid with color ramp, fractal noise, or animated elements): • White pixels → animation offset forward by T seconds • Black pixels → animation offset backward by T seconds • 50% gray pixels → no offset (current frame) • Set the displacement map as the effect input Step 4: Artifact Removal • Apply the Mosaic effect to the displacement map • Calculate mosaic block size = main_comp_size ÷ pattern_size • Enter the calculated values into the Mosaic effect By: Charles
