A new Acas survey has found that theft, bullying, being rude and not turning up to work are among the worst behaviours reported by employers for disciplinary action against staff. Acas commissioned YouGov to ask British businesses about the worst examples of behaviour that resulted in disciplinary action against a member of staff. The five most commonly reported behaviours were: • not turning up to work – 34% • theft or stealing from work – 30% • bullying at work – 30% • being rude to colleagues or customers – 30% • taking sick leave when not genuinely ill – 27% It is important for these issues to be dealt with as early as possible. Some other types of behaviour that may lead to disciplinary action may not be as clear cut. Employers and workers have rights and responsibilities at work, and handling concerns early can save on costs and stress for everyone concerned. Acas has launched a consultation on proposed updates to its statutory Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures. The new draft Code reflects the benefits of informal and early resolution of conflict and seeks views on how to improve the handling of formal procedures. Read the research and take part in the consultation: https://lnkd.in/eTYNMfEy The consultation closes on 23 September 2026.

Acas resolved over 150,000 early conciliation cases last year, a 27% rise on the year before, and settled nine out of ten without a tribunal hearing. Acas CEO, Niall Mackenzie CBE has presided over Acas's strategy during this period. Nobody has a clearer read on where disputes are actually landing, or which changes are creating the most confusion on the ground, than the organisation fielding the calls. Niall joins the panel "UK Employment Law Is Being Overhauled: What HR Leaders Need to Know Now" at the Future of Work Summit, London, September 2026. Link to register in the comments.
