About us

What we do might surprise you! AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, social mission organization with a membership of nearly 38 million. Our aim is to disrupt outdated stereotypes about aging, turn goals and dreams into real possibilities, and fight for the issues that matter most to people 50-plus, their families and communities. Our social impact work in health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment is at the heart of what we do. With offices in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we live and work in the communities we serve. We listen to what people need and want, and offer programs, services and trusted information that are directly relevant to them. State offices also work with our national office to amplify our members’ voices at the local and federal levels to help empower people 50 and above to choose how they live and work as they age. From being a force for positive change to producing the nation’s largest-circulation magazine – the full scope of what we do might surprise you! That’s why people who are excited by unique opportunities and galvanized by meaningful challenges come to work at AARP.

During my recent visit to our AARP Puerto Rico state office, I had the pleasure of spending time with renowned Puerto Rican chef Giovanna Huyke, learning to prepare one of the island’s traditional dishes. Together, we explored how healthy ingredients can preserve the flavors and traditions we love while supporting our long-term health.   Our conversation went beyond the ingredients. We talked about how food brings people together, through caring for one another, sharing traditions with friends and family, and creating moments of connection. That simple idea is at the heart of healthy aging.   That’s why conversations like this are important to our mission at AARP. Understanding what matters to people, from the traditions they cherish to the communities they call home, helps us better support them in living well as they age.   Thank you, Chef Giovanna, for sharing your culinary expertise and the flavors, culture, and warmth of Puerto Rico. I left with a renewed appreciation for how food can nurture our mind, body, and soul.   #AARP #HealthyAging #HealthyLiving #BrainHealth

As I meet people across the country, I’m reminded that voting is about more than casting a ballot. It’s about helping shape the future we want for ourselves, our families, and our communities.   This November, older Americans will once again play a pivotal role in decisions that affect issues central to our lives, including Social Security and support for family caregivers. At AARP, we believe every eligible voter deserves access to trusted, nonpartisan information so they can make informed choices with confidence.    I’m inspired by the thousands of AARP volunteers who help their neighbors navigate the voting process and understand the issues that matter most. Their dedication reflects a simple but powerful belief: democracy is strongest when people have the information they need to participate.   I hope you’ll take a moment to read my latest article and explore the resources we have available to help you prepare for Election Day.

When people talk about the future of work, the conversation often focuses on technology. But the future of work is also about people and the unique value that different generations bring to the workplace.   In my recent conversation with William Kerr on the Harvard Business School Managing the Future of Work podcast, we discuss why age-diverse teams are a strength for organizations and how employers can better leverage the experience, skills, and perspectives of older workers.   One of the greatest opportunities in today's workforce is the chance for generations to learn from one another. Multigenerational teams create space for the exchange of ideas, mentorship, and collaboration. As organizations continue to integrate AI and other emerging technologies, those connections will be more important than ever.   I enjoyed sharing insights from AARP's work and research on the changing workforce and discussing what leaders can do to build workplaces where talent of all ages can thrive. Thank you to Bill and the Project on Managing the Future of Work team for a thoughtful conversation.   🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://lnkd.in/e4NngjKx   #LongevityEconomy #FutureofWork #MultigenerationalWorkforce #AgeDiversity #AI

At 63, Yukie Pittman is proving that it’s never too late to learn something new. After years of making lumpia for friends and family, Yukie turned her passion for Filipino cooking into a bona fide business. After taking a class from Senior Planet—a signature program of Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP — she learned how to use AI and tech to her advantage. Now, she’s able to create logos, marketing materials, business cards and new opportunities for herself. As Yukie puts it: “The Senior Planet class put me on a whole other level. It inspired me to grow.” Her story is a reminder that curiosity, lifelong learning and entrepreneurship have no age limit. Read how Yukie is using technology and AI to grow her business and embrace aging at the link in the comments.

When I began my career as a physician, I was driven by a simple goal: helping people live healthier, more secure lives. That purpose continues to guide me today as CEO of AARP, where I have the privilege of advocating for the health and financial security of millions of older Americans and their families.  In a recent conversation with Forbes, I shared reflections on my career journey, the power of embracing new chapters, and why issues like Social Security matter so deeply, not only for today’s retirees but for future generations as well. One thing I’ve learned is that careers are rarely linear. The skills, relationships, and experiences we gain along the way often prepare us for opportunities we never expected. As more Americans work longer, pursue second acts, and redefine what aging looks like, I believe we need systems and policies that support people at every stage of life. Thank you to Forbes and Courtney Connley-Hampton for the conversation.
