The Wolf of Wall Street centres on youngish stock trader tycoon Belfort ( Di caprio- in a powerhouse performance) rise, rise and eventual indictment for insider trading and laundering. It also exposes he's appetite for excess - money, women , drugs, drinking and risky behaviour. This is shown unashamedly and in typical Scorsese fashion. It makes for entertaining viewing and a good insight into the " American Dream". You can't help in some way envying him but it also shows the downside of the lifestyle. The support cast is large but they all shine including his 2 ic ( Hill) wife ( Robbie) first wife (Milioti), initial mentor ( Mccaughney) and fbi agent on his trail ( Chandler) amongst many others. One of many highlights is the speeches he makes to his loyal band of brokers. It is riveting and also an interesting insight into the power of wealth. Perhaps the only minor weakness is the lack of seeing / explanation of his apex money making talent ( although there is a good scene near the beginning where he showcases his ability to sell a dud stock) This perhaps could have been fleshed out more like in 1987 " Wall Street" . Overall an amazing motion picture which is easily rewatchable and unforgettable.
First off il state the obvious- this is not a patch on the original. Where this is a bit of a let down is the following. - lack of authenticity. Eg first he can't stand his mother then the next thing he's hugging her similar thing with his feelings towards the general that led the battle that destroyed his home and killed his wife. There are other examples. Also the homage or explained links to the original felt forced and almost corny. Also some plot details were not credible such as the killing of the emperors. Washington basically steaks the show- but even this seems out of place for this supposed time period. The awe and mystery of Rome is not felt here like the original. The good- the battle and killing scenes are graphic and generally- the film moves on at a good pace and is kind of enjoyable if you suspend belief. One viewing only . Go back and watch the original.
