Pretty funny at times, very creative with an inventive narrative around what dogs think of things. The movie is kind of immaterial without this. The bad language is consistent as is a lot of the adult themes, lots of dick jokes.. lots of leg humping humour. So be warned if you don't mind that kind of low brow humour.
The acting, as in the voice over, is fairly forced at times - but I still really enjoyed it. Will Ferrel does an amazing job doing a Ryan Reynolds impression for the whole movie. Tell me I'm wrong.
Some good cameos.. and plenty of ridiculous lines that made me smile. "Poop your way to freedom" was to be my new catch phrase until the scene that followed. Which made me gag. Like a lot.
I enjoyed it, but I'm pretty immature. I'm still laughing thinking about it - made for a good rainy Saturday afternoon rental.

This film has many plot holes in my opinion, but it was so beautifully acted and the cinematic experience is phenomenal. Probably too emotionally charged with a deep, singular narrative on what and who we are as humans.. way beyond what I'd imagine most sci-fi lovers would cherish in a film that lacks engineering validity, or at least Sci-fi dialogue. I'm mean, just a tad more plausibility in that space would've been excellent especially for the presumed target audience. Less explaining is sometimes better.
I know all this sounds negative which is against my 9/10 score, but there are just so many good aspects to this film to list. It was visually beautiful, thought provoking and all the characters and especially the acting are excellent.

It's got so many detective cliches I don't know where to start. Retired detective, personal tragically, a troubled soul with all the usual detective story vibes. He just needs a hat, a dark office and a background voiceover. And the main actor's singing, oh my, it reminds me of Vogon poetry from the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Except that it adds no value or purpose to the protagonist's character or the story line at all. But despite all that, I still found myself enjoying the show. The production quality is pretty good and there are some redeeming qualities that make it worth the watch. So if you can embrace the cliches, the depressing singing, and enjoy the highly emotional themes, maybe you'll 'kind of enjoy' it too.
