I was skeptical about this remake when I first heard about it. The first episode had be hooked right away. While I really like Eddie Redmayne I was concerned if he would be able to pull it off. But not only did he pull it off, he knocked it out of the ballpark!
But honestly as great a performance he has been doing with this series Lashana can barely keep up. While not particularly bad, her acting range is so limited it is sometimes hard to watch her scenes. Her scenes have much more range than Eddie's, as she has to navigate the find line of trying to keep her family together without revealing her true functions, dealing with peers and superiors having to beg or steal authority to justify her actions. All with just a few expressions that just don't really convey any real depth.
Eddie has so much range, the scene where just being silent as he sees his comrades decide to erase their mistake after taking out a wedding banquet, or when he is confronted by his wife demanding him to say out loud what he never dares to say out loud, that he kills people for a living, a rather good living.
Lashana walks through her scenes with a hangdog look, sad sack expression that just got grating.
And honestly, Lashana's body count is actually higher than Eddie's, but at least Eddie's character intended to kill them. Lashana's all died from her mistakes or just her incompetence.

I really tried to watch this, now up to episode 3. Other than the names of the characters, there really is no connection whatsoever to the original series.
But first, I was getting headaches from the over jittery explosions and flashes across the screen, pretty much anime style. Lots of dazzling fluff, but nothing of value added to the show. Then the awful pastel and low contrast color palette just makes every screen difficult to look at. The original R&M colors are vivid and bright, and really makes each frame stand out.
But now the story, it looks like it is one long 10 episode story. Not the single episode format, with secondary story running in the background. The anime makes if tough to watch since you have to watch the entire series since it's one long story. The fun with the original R&M is you can pop on any episode and it's easy watch without having to watch an entire season. True there were some seasons that left a cliffhanger for the final episode, but still the underlying story of those episodes still left you satisfied.
As for Anime Rick, he just seems to be an angry old man. Okay, Original Rick is also angry, but he's also perfectly perverted, totally obnoxious, drunkard, and funny as hell with his sardonic wit. Anime Rick has no snappy comebacks, no witty banter, he's just - pissed off meh.
In the first few episodes, they threw in nearly everyone from all the R&M seasons into the mix, are they hoping to see what sticks? Like the Federation, the president, Space Beth, some kind of super hero VR Morty, Tammy, even Kronenberg Morty. Not sure about that alien girl, but she seems to be a version Timeless Jessica but again these are kept unexplained until probably the final few episodes. Even Birdperson and Birddaughter showed up briefly to comfort a broken Tammy. How all these end teasers connect up, or if they do at all is not something than I bother to wait and see.
I've previously enjoyed the Anime shorts, but each of those were well defined little stories. This Anime series probably could have played well as a single movie instead. So anyways, this series is a big disconnect for me. I'm waiting for Season 8.

I'm not a big Awkwafina fan, but she does have some laughs here and there. It's also fun seeingJohn Cena as the big lovable stuff bear that goes over and beyond to help her and himself out of their predicament. Seeing Simu Lu as the bad guy was icing and just hilarious as he's beating up on Cena and Awkwafina.
That said, this was a good movie to watch while I was prepping and eating dinner. Nothing super memorable, it was an interesting funny action movie but again not something I would specifically want to re-watch. I was kinda surprised there is some good comedic chemistry with Awkwafina and Cena, not romantic by any means but they do the comedy well together.
In all it's an okay movie if you want something just to watch without bothering about keeping track of the plot or anything else. There are worse ways to kill time.
There is some chemistry.
