I was expecting so much of The Wailing because everyone speaks so highly of it. The plot seemed very intriguing as well, so I couldn't wait to see how acclaimed director Na Hong-jin would tackle it.
I am rating this 5/10, and I'm still being generous here. There is not ONE (1) likeable character in the entire film. The main character, Jong-goo, cannot do a single right thing. He is reckless and always rushing head-first into every new problem that arises, on top of being very rude to everybody. It is truly painful to watch him for two hours and a half.
As for the plot itself, it is a bunch of random events that happen one after the other. This is a long film, and yet we arrive at the end without knowing much. What exactly is the disease? Who is the mysterious woman and what does she want? Is this anti-Japanese propaganda?
I would overall not recommend this film.
