Wow, it reminds me of the last 2 seasons of Homeland. And this is better written with more actual history instead of Homelands' lazy history. It was a bunch of fun. There is the issue of the pacing. It's extremely rapid. In a way where a main villain henchman is seen maybe 3 times. Set up with him acting evil and next scene he's defeated. This henchman should have gotten way more scenes to really set up his evilness. Maybe show him kill more guys instead of just showing the end result and show how strong he is. Instead we kinda just jump all over the place. Jack Ryan is young here and it's extremely fascinating to see him use his intellect to solve main problems as this brand new recruit. Even using backchannels when he has to. But it's amazing how little action he takes part in. Some is tension filled, but I kinda wanted him to have a bigger role. If not then set up the other characters better. The rapid pace has us follow 6 different main characters who all have their own goals and are each in their own location of the world. But only 3 are properly introduced. I could need a few more calm scenes with Jack Ryan just joking around with the other characters to make it feel like a real world where consequences feel personal. The bad guy for example is in his own universe. He never actually shows up next to the good guys. Maybe make him fly to USA to follow the disaster unfold and let Jack Ryan stumble into him. A bit movie writing was needed here.
Overall the movie is a ton of fun and highly recommended. I would not call it the best Jack Ryan movie, but it goes toe to toe with the best ones in the series. If this had been 3 hours it would be a classic. But at times the director just messes up this way and we are nearly there. Even the romance subplot was properly set up with each scene taking the relationship a step further with a very funny scene in there too.
