Nothing on Bulgarian TV so I checked out Film4 on filmon.com, as there was nothing else on the UK channels worth watching. I've avoided Film4 a lot lately as the titles/writeups haven't been that inspiring.
What a surprise! I started it as the popcorn was popping, half expecting to give it 15 mins max. However, it was an excellent little movie with excellent direction and acting that kept me enthralled to the end.
The main characters were all excellent, particularly Sa5m (Survive'em), but many of the minor characters were very good too which, to a great extent, was down to quite a pleasantly-surprising well-written script.

Not the usual fare for PPV on Bulsatcom in Bulgaria and, with Malkovich currently appearing every few seconds on CNN, in ads for one of their items about him (I've seen the item and he is sickeningly pretentious), I was in two minds whether or not to use my last (free) token to watch it.
My God! I am glad I did. Malkovich and MacDowell gave superlative performances in a beautifully written, directed and acted piece where even the minor roles combined to make this a masterpiece of story and film. Not just "even" the minor roles, as these were excellent performances by Joss Ackland, Ricci Harnett, Bill Paterson, Roger Lloyd-Pack, etc., etc., yes even the few lines from Pip Torrens as the art evaluator. Rudi Davies was excellent (not sure why we haven't seen anything from her in the last fifteen years).
Well, my free token ran out three minutes before the end. Pity!

I've just seen this movie on satellite TV in Bulgaria. In another life, I would have watched it on the large screen but here, well, it is just too far to go to a cinema. I watched it on Film Plus and it cost me my last free credit. I groaned at the thought of the waste.
I used to like Murphy's vehicles. Trading Places was excellent and so was Beverly Hills Cop. I also used to like his stand-up routines and what I saw of him on SNL and the Tonight Show, a long time ago.
I think the turning point for me was The Nutty Professor. It is the only movie that I have ever walked out of and I left two gleeful 11 year olds in the theatre to watch it by themselves. I've not really liked anything that he has done since then.
The funny thing is that the post-hotdog eating episode in Dave could have been just as gross as anything in Nutty but it wasn't (I don't know if "tasteful" is a good word to use in this context).
You couldn't count the number of times I laughed out loud at this movie on four hands, let alone two. Like others, I am amazed at the low rating.
The idea, well, that has been done before but it was great! The movie was great! The cast was great, all of them! The special effects, well OK, but they were pretty good too. The music was great! Welcome back Eddie Murphy!
