One of the most convoluted slasher films of all time

Warning: Spoilers
(1974) The Fish with the Eyes of Gold/ El pez de los ojos de oro (In Spanish with English subtitles) PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

It opens with a murder of a young bikini lady murdered on an isolated area of a beach from a man wearing scuba gear, while another man who happen to be boating witnessing the entire ordeal. And by the time he reach to the already dead lady, he was also chasing this culprit back into the ocean. The next scene has Derek (Wal Davis) hitchhiking who happen to witness a lady arguing with a guy we find out later his name is Marco (Rex Martín) while she was driving away. By the time she saw Derek, she then stops her car and decides to drive give him a ride. While both her and him are listening to the news on the car radio, we finally find out the name of the first victim, her name is Hildegard Aaron (Susana Taber). She then drives him to an lodge/ inn and rents one of the rooms with the intentions of sleeping with him. By the time Derek wakes up from boozing and sleeping it off, the lady who was nice enough to give him a lift is already been murdered, and while looking at her, he also notices she is missing a golden eye pendent around her neck before he packs up and escapes, presuming no one is going to believe him anyway by taking her vehicle. Meanwhile, we finally know a little more about the first witness who chased the killer back into the ocean after he witnessed a lady killed on front of him, we find out his name is Zachary Kendall (Ricardo Vázquez) an artist married to Virginia Kendall (Norma Kastell). At the same time, Zachery viewers also see traumatizing flashbacks of him as a little child as he stood their while his own father was stabbing his mother. Derek was planning to drive away, but until he saw authorities blocking the main road, he decided to ditch the vehicle and walk the rest of the way to his intended destination which is to meet Zachery who is also happens tied to the first murder as he is a witness. And by the time Derek explained to him about his complicated situation he then advised him it might be a good idea to go to the police and explain to the inspector what happened. During this was happening, viewers then see an unknown killer with a sniper rifle, and it looks as though he was ready to use it, until another art student walks in her name is Marina (Ada Tauler). And just when you think someone was going to be knocked off, Virginia closes the shades. Down the line we know more about the guy we saw at the opening, Marco (Rex Martín) who takes money from wealthy women, who Derek had saw was arguing with the second victim, Monica (Monserrat Proust), he was supposed to be most likely suspect to have killed those women.

As it turned out there are two murderers, one happens to be Marco to which he denied he ever killed and murdered anyone; and Zachery who murdered because he is unable to get over his dad stabbing his own mother on front of him. That Marco ignited the trauma as soon as he saw him murdered the first victim, viewers are never explained why he did in the first place. What is also dumb is the way the second or fourth victim are killed- it is like no one locks their doors anymore, even when couples are like making out and stuff. And if Zachery already knew who the first murder is, why didn't he tell that to authorities, Why wasn't Marco charged and arrested for the first murder! We never even find out the person who was hiding in the bushes and was pointing his sniper rifle on them when all Zachery' his wife Virginia, Derek and Marion were altogether. I also do not think Zachery could be two places at once if he had his hands burned.

At first I presumed it was Marion's father, since the movie was running out of suspects if it was not Marco, and made even less sense when it turned out to be Zachery.

It is not bad but just long

(1990) The Hot Spot CRIME DRAMA

Adapted from the book by Charles Williams that has Harry Madox (Don Johnson) imposing himself for a job as an used car salesman while in a small Texas town. And as soon as he is hired, it is not long before he imposes himself onto the bosses wife, Dolly Harshaw (Virginia Madsen). Harry also has a complicated relationship with the secretary, Gloria Harper (Jennifer Connelly) in regards to repossessing another vehicle from a guy named Frank Sutton (William Sadler) who appear to be able to get away from paying his debts. After he finds out the workers who work at the city bank also happen to be volunteer fire fighters may have gave him a good idea to rob the city bank, he decides to exploit the situation by doing just that. Except that after using the next fire as a diversion to rob the bank their were witnesses, one of them being Dolly who wants him to murder her husband. Complicating matters is the fact that Frank may have lewd humiliating photos of 18 years old turning 19 Gloria and is blackmailing her.

Directed by known actor Dennis Hopper who was given credit for directing Easy Rider he has decided to step his toes into directing noir, except that many of the scenarios happened during the day time. Both Virginia Madson and Jennifer Connelly are sexy as ever and the acting is solid, the movie is just long with some unsatisfying results.

Interesting set up but with zero resolution

(2019) Only the Animals (In French with English subtitles) PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA

Adapted from the novel by Colin Niel co-written and directed by Dominik Moll directing a movie that is divided into the perspectives from 5 different people and five different names of Alice, Joseph, Marion, Amandine and then Michael. It opens with Nigerian guy carrying a goat on his back while riding his bike bringing it to a guy he called Papa Sanou. The movie starts with a lady named Alice Farange (Laure Calamy) as she is driving to a guy named Joseph Bonnefille (Damien Bonnard) to his farm. While Alice is helping him with his finances, she also makes out with him before she goes back home. And then along the way she then crosses path with someone's abandoned vehicle, and does not think too much of it. Alice's home also happens to be a farm as well to which during fixing dinner, news casts then say that a Parisian woman happens to be missing. Her name is Evelyne Ducat (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) with nothing but her car. As Alice is delivering meals to both her husband, Michel Farange (Denis Ménochet) and her dad. A police officer, Gendarme Cédric Vigier (Bastien Bouillon) then drops by and questions her about Evelyne's disappearance who also asks her about Joseph, the guy she visited and made out with. We find out from her, that Joseph although strange had just lost his mother and is unable to get over it. At then as the movie proceeds further, we then see bruising marks on Michel's face, before we no longer see him anymore we she involves officer Cedric to pick her up find her husband. Then the second chapter happens in accordance to Joseph to which during the night while his dog was barking, he would stick his head out to see a red light. He thinks nothing of it before he steps out and stumbles onto a lifeless body. At one point, he wants to dump the body to another snow embankment site but then decides to take it home with him. It is obvious Joseph has some mental issues as he treats the dead woman as if she is still alive. He does this by placing it on a side wall before using a forklift to place a bunch of hay stacks around it so that he can visit it whenever he feels fit. Perhaps to use her lifeless body as a ruse in replacement of his dead mother! It was obvious he did not have anything to do with her death, but we find out later the way he was treating this dead body was similar to how he treated his dead mother when she had died. To say anything more would be spoiling it for viewers have to see how everything connects with one another. The third chapter is a lady named "Marion" a waitress played by Nadia Tereszkiewicz of a fancy restaurant who becomes automatically involve with one of her customers who coincidentally happens to be the missing persons, Evelyne Ducat (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi). Marion then quits her job and then goes on a rant to find Evelyne as she believes she has finally found her soul mate. The fourth chapter is the name Amandine the fake name given by a Nigerian, Armand (Guy Roger 'Bibisse' N'Drin) on-line for the purpose of swindling. That sucker happens to be Alice's husband, Michael, to which at the opening him using a computer was no big deal. But as soon as we find out he was using it find another mistress that is not his wife, it was no longer funny anymore.

I was involved but then it is like, by the time we got to the end, nothing is actually resolved despite the fascination how they are all connected.

Rust (2011)

The movie is long, vague, boring and plot less to it almost being pointless
2 February 2025
(2011) Rust/ Ruggine (In Italian with English subtitles) PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA

Adapted from the novel by Stefano Massaron co-written and directed by Daniele Gaglianone that has a bunch of children playing around with their imaginary games for 53 minutes, particularly at this 'dumping broken car lot site' called "The Castle". During this was happening we are also shown some adults hanging around in a bar. As it turns out, the adults hanging around at the bar used to be some of those same kids we had been seeing from the first 53 minutes with the kid, Carmine (Valerio Mastandrea) being the most aggressive and the most gruff, and Sandro (Stefano Accorsi) being the most grounded. Carmine also has a little sister, Rosalia who becomes a little dysfunctional herself when we see her as an adult. The group of kids lives then becomes interrupted as soon as one of their own is discovered dead by local authorities. They think it's the loony, Bava with Carmine leading the pack chasing and beating him with their sticks. Again, the parents appear to be just as absent as much as the local police. I have no idea how anyone can relate to this scenario unless their is a great divide between the wealthy and the impoverished.

What viewers hardly see here are the local authorities questioning anyone if a body is discovered. It is like, the only reason they are only there is by principle. The doctor, Boldrini (Filippo Timi ) descends into insanity viewers have no idea how he got that way or that he even had a son in the first place as we see him playing with him of a kid name Michele throughout. No one misses him or his presence to the community as he appears to be the only only one who drives an expensive car. Is this how Italian local authorities treat the missing or the dead by not questioning anyone or whether their is any consequences for anyone's actions or behavior problems. Then this film is totally outdated and out of touch.

The relationship between the mother, the daughter and the lawyer is complicated
2 February 2025
(2014) In The Name of My Daughter/ L'homme qu'on aimait trop (In French with English subtitles) BIO DRAMA/ MYSTERY

Adapted from the book "Une femme face à la Mafia" by Jean-Charles Le Roux(2014) and Renée Le Roux, co- written and directed by André Téchiné that has daughter, Agnès Le Roux (Adèle Haenel) of a casino owner, Renée Le Roux (Catherine Deneuve) arriving at the airport with lawyer, Maurice Agnelet (Guillaume Canet) waiting to pick her up from her trip from Africa. And before Agnès goes to see her mother, she then asks Maurice she wants to go for a swim, and that is exactly what happened. By the time she arrives, Maurice informs Renée that if she wants to see her that she may need to see her daughter in the car as she does not want to come inside. When the mom does go out to see Agnès, she was already dozed up waiting for her, but is woken up as soon as she arrives. On the following day, Agnès informs her mom she not only wants to open up her own store, but she also wants her mom to sell the casino as well as collect what is owed from her dad's inheritance. Except that when Agnès asked her, it was bad timing as Renée had to shell out five million to a customer. And as it turned out by her lawyer, Maurice it was by four people who have a questionable track records. This also puts Renée to make the decision to kick her current chief executive out and to make her advocate her to take his place. Maurice wants to be managing director, except that Renée tells him she wants to think about it. As a result, it creates a rift since Agnès is becoming too comfortable with Maurice.

I was very involved with the first half of the movie, but as soon as it delved into the complicated mess between the mother, Renée her daughter, Agnès and the lawyer, Maurice is when the movie kind of bogs down. I had no idea it was based on Agnès Le Roux, the 29-year-old heiress of one of the country's biggest casinos, the Palais de la Méditerranée in the Riviera city of Nice.

Not the best Luis Buñuel film, at least not better than his black and white ones
1 February 2025
(1972) The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie (In French with English subtitles) FANTASY

Co-written and directed by Luis Buñuel that has four friends or important guests of Don Rafael Acosta (Fernando Rey), François Thévenot (Paul Frankeur) and his wife, Simone Thévenot (Delphine Seyrig) and Florence (Bulle Ogier) showing up to the residence of Henri (Jean-Pierre Cassel) and Alice (Stéphane Audran) Sénéchal presuming they were supposed to attend for a meal invited by them. And according to Alice since her husband Henri is not even home, she informs them the meal was supposed to have happened on the following day. Because Alice has nothing prepared, she then decides to join them upon going into a restaurant nearby, except that after a funeral was held there that regards the disease of the manager, they decide to scrap it. And upon Henri Sénéchal and François Thévenot showing up in Don Rafael Acosta's office since he is the "ambassador of the embassy of Miranda" they then agreed to make arrangements to postpone their meal together on a Saturday. Meanwhile, from Don's office he then sees (Anne-Marie Deschodt) selling some toys on the sidewalk, who then grabs his rifle and shoots at it. She then gathers them up and takes them into a car waiting nearby before it drives away. Don then accuses her of being a terrorist from Miranda. At this point viewers think nothing of it until the very same lady shows up later. Meanwhile, Florence, Simone and Alice show up at a tea function with the waiter informing them they ran out of tea, and that they may have to settle for coffee. A lieutenant sitting nearby notices all three of them talking about him, and he comes up to them so that he can introduce himself to them as Lt. Hubert de Rochcahin (Christian Baltauss) and he tells them a story about when he was a young boy, and how he joined the military.

Just when I was becoming interested into watching highly rated movies, I made the mistake of making "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" and "That Obscure Object of Desire" to be my first Luis Buñuel movies to watch without knowing anything he was a surrealist. It was not until I had watched his black and white movies he was synonymous for such as "Viridiana", "The Exterminating Angel" and "Simon of the Desert" I was able to understand his surreal, and in this case dreamlike approach, because to be honest, I fell asleep when I first saw this and That Obscure Object of Desire". Presuming that if Luis Buñuel's name was not attached to this film and some of his later movies before his death that if this was some other director, it would not have gotten the same notoriety that it did. Anyways, not everything I had seen in this film did not make much sense even after watching it again, when it includes 2 of the narratives by the lieutenant and the soldier's stories the reason it only warrants a pass, and not as high as some of the other reviewers on here.

Night Moves (1975)

Night Moves is better seen with subtitles or with the close captioning

Warning: Spoilers
(1975) Night Moves CRIME MYSTERY THRILLER

The set up has LA private eye, Harry Moseby (Gene Hackman) hired by washed up starlet and actress, Arlene Iverson (Janet Ward) to find her runaway daughter, Delly Grastner (Melanie Griffith) and then bring her back to her. Harry's first lead is a Hollywood mechanic, Quentin (James Woods) that leads him to other former acquaintances. At the same time, Harry's own marriage is also in trouble as he catches his own wife, Ellen (Susan Clark) being intimate with someone else after leaving the theater. He then manages to find Delly in an isolated area on the waterfront located in Florida living with her stepfather, Tom Iverson (John Crawford) and his wife, Paula (Jennifer Warren). At first, Delly was not aware about the purpose of Harry's presence, and as soon he tells her he is paid to return her back to LA she becomes upset, and then tells him the reason she wants her mother to come back was for the money. At this point, viewers are not explained how Delly's mother able to benefit from her financially being there it just is. To calm things down, Harry decides to just hang around there without force. Tom suggests to Paula to take the boat and take Delly out swimming out in the ocean Harry comes with them. And while Delly swims in the ocean nude, other than the goggles for her eyes, she suddenly spots a plane wreckage and calls Paula over. When Delly investigates the wreckage further, she also finds a dead body in the wreckage as well, and she almost drowned herself had it not been for Harry jumping into the ocean himself and bring her back into the boat. Paula then leaves a beacon/ tracker on the area so that authorities are able to get involve and investigate it. By the time they go back ashore, Delly who is still traumatized, could not get over it, and during the night, she finally decides she wants to go back to LA.. As soon as Harry returns back to collect his paycheck, almost immediately Delly is already arguing with her mother, with mechanic, Quentin on the driveway. Before Harry drives away, he first observes the dysfunctional that was happening. Just when you think the case was closed- it's not. Harry finds out Delly has been killed accidentally killed in a stunt gone wrong with stunt driver, Joey Ziegler (Edward Binns) on the driver's side with Delly as the passenger. The first thing in Harry's mind was murder, to after watching the entire accident on some news reel, the first person that came into his mind was Quinton the mechanic, who may have rigged the car Joey was driving. After Harry confronts Quinton about it, he managed to beat a confession out of him with the fact the reason she was killed may be because of the plane wreckage before he manages to runaway himself. At first, Harry presumed Delly's mother may have something to do with it as she will somehow be enriched as a result of her death, but after he made a few inquiries about the wreckage itself as it turned out it was Tom Iverson and Paula had something to do with Delly's murder. Quinton is then killed by Tom this was because he told Harry too much. During a scrimmage with Tom, Harry manages to knock him unconscious with him and Paula searching the plane wreckage together for the head statue that was discovered illegally smuggled.

The confusion for me was when I first saw this, I thought it was Tom the one who was flying the sea plane at end that killed Paula, but as it turns out it was an already injured stunt coordinator, Joey Ziegler the one who was the culprit, something Harry may have missed after he got everything else right. This raises the question why didn't they try to kill Harry as well he too also knows all about the wreckage. He may have not know the person who died in their but he was also a witness. And throughout the entire time this had happened, why authorities were not involve with the accident that killed Delly!

The first time I saw this, as a matter of fact I tried watching it on TV and by renting it a few times and I did not like it on all of those times. On all of those occasions I tried watching it, they were without subtitles or the close captioning. As soon as it was shown on TCM with the close captioning I was able to grasp at the situation a little more. Although I gave it a pass, the ending was still a little convoluted. We do not know why one of the killers, Joey Ziegler was permitted to fly a plane after his serious injury who can clearly be seen wearing his arm cast as Harry was able to see him through the glass pane at the bottom of the boat.

Just that one scene near the end kind of bothered me
29 January 2025
(1962) Cape Fear PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

Adapted from the novel "The Executioners" by John D. MacDonald that has prosecutor, Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck) managing to hold Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) for his crimes. Before he is put away, he swears retribution as soon as he comes out. And when does come out he then stalk and terrorize Sam Bowden; his wife, Peggy Bowden (Polly Bergen) and their teenage daughter, Nancy Bowden (Lori Martin). Leading their final confrontation to a boat house.

My rating may have been higher had it not been the inconsistency near the end of the movie, where the Robert Mitchum character were wrestling with the Gregory Peck character and had him on a deadly choke hold. Used often on opponents of several MMA fights, as well as real life that killed people. The Robert Mitchum character who played Sam should have been dead when the choke hold was used on him, especially if he used it while he was on the swampy water that should have cut his circulation entering into the lungs, and have him pass out.

Fat Girl (2001)
5/10
The unlikely scenario and unexpected last five minutes killed the credibilty the first hour and 24 minutes
29 January 2025
Warning: Spoilers
(2001) Fat Girl (In French with English subtitles) DRAMA

Written and directed by Catherine Breillat that has "fat girl", Anaïs Pingot (Anaïs Reboux) walking with her older sister, Elena Pingot (Roxane Mesquida) and they decide to stop at an outside diner. And while many of the seats were filled, another older student, Fernando (Libero De Rienzo) invited both of them to sit next to him. Anais went to sit on the seat right next to his, but his older sister Elena then bullies her out of their and sits their instead. And when the waiter asks what each of them want, Anais then asks for a banana split while Elena asks for a glass of water as it was obvious from the get go she was trying to get Fernando to notice her by flirting with him. Elena then asks Anais to walk home by herself while she takes the other seat of his two seat convertible. Fernando then drives Elenia far enough to reach her sister, it is then both walk the rest of the way. At this point, we can presume, Elenia does not mind humiliating Anais about her weight and so forth on front of others and then by the time both have their alone time is when she tries to make up with her. And it is not just Elenia who does this, but their mom and dad as well. This happens throughout the rest of the movie except for the final five minutes.

The ending made no sense at all, as the mother played by Arsinée Khanjia did not want to deal with the humiliation anymore after finding out that the expensive ring Fernando gave to Elenia he had no permission to do in the first place, which forced them to cut their vacation short, upsetting both sisters. And after the mother is driving for very long hours, decides not to rent a motel for the night. The mother then decides to just park her car on the side of the road while Anais notices a crazy trucker slowly passing by them. And while both Elenia and the mother are sleeping on the front seat, the crazy trucker then uses a pry bar to first smash the front window, before he uses it on the sister Elenia. He then chokes the mother to death while Anais just continues to stand their shocked at what she just saw. He then drags Anais to the woods where he rapes her. The next scene is then show authorities already their seeing both Elenia and the mom killed. Slowly they then discover Anais being comforted by two officers where she denies he even assaulted her. That was supposed to show Anais kept her promise she made to herself that if she were to lose her virginity she would not have admitted to it. This leads to the first question, how a crazy man would be killing two women so that he can make out with someone who is clearly obese. That makes no sense. The other inconsistency is why would a mother with the money she has decide to put her and her daughters in a defenseless situation, and be confident to choose to sleep inside of a car on the side of the road as opposed to renting a motel for one night. A much more credible scenario is the mother would have rented a motel for the night both for her and her two daughters so that they can avoid obvious scenarios such as that one. That the reason it ended the way that it did was because the writer/ director may have ran out of funding or that producers refused anymore funding the reason she imposed the ending that made no sense to anyone who has seen it whatsoever. I was involved until the ending Catherine could not resist to sticking that dumb asinine ending.

Although, still has a good ending despite boring in parts
29 January 2025
(1949) A Dangerous Profession CRIME DRAMA

Bail bondsman who used to be a cop, Vince Kane (George Raft) gets a call from longtime friend lieutenant, Nick Ferrone (Jim Backus) to come and pick him up regarding a suspect, Claude Brackett (Bill Williams) accused of killing a cop, Benny Kafka, and that his bond is set at 25 thousand. And upon visiting his apartment, Vince finds out he also happens to be married to a former flame he used to go out with, her name is Lucy Brackett (Ella Raines). Upon Lucy and her attorney Mr. Lennert (Jonathan Hale) visiting Vince they first claim Claude Bennet is innocent and that the ones responsible are the two people he knows nothing about, and that he is made into as the fall guy. Both Lucy and her attorney tell him they can only put up about 4,000 of the 25 grand that is needed, and they promise to pay him on the following day. And when the next day comes, another person comes in his name is Dawson (David Wolfe) and claims to also represent the accused, and he hands him an envelope of $12,000. And then as soon as he leaves, Lucy's attorney shows up hands him 4,000 except he claims he knows nothing about Dawson at all. Vince then decides to cover the rest of the money rendered, instructing Claude to come to contact him the following day to he did not do. The objective is to find out who were the other two conspirators who dealt with Claude and who was the actual person who shot and killed former officer, Benny Kafka exposing a possible extortion racket.

This movie is boring in parts and if one were to watch enough of them should be able to predict the course of events that lead up to the ending that it did. The movie still got a superficial ending and that is good enough to give this movie a pass.

A cross between "Gilda" and "The Most Dangerous Game"
29 January 2025
(1949) Johnny Allegro CRIME DRAMA

George Raft plays an owner of a florist shop part of a hotel, Johnny Allegro when a stranger, Glenda Chapman (Nina Foch) comes up to him and begins to kiss him for the intention of using him as a ruse after she notices detectives were following her. And when she pulls her head back, she then asks Johnny to play along with it by pretending to act as his wife or lover. He does and during closing time, a man from the Treasury Department, Schultzy (Will Geer) then imposes himself into his store claiming to know him as Johnny Rock, who escaped from prison, and he proposes to pardon him if he were to agree working with them. He agrees when he gained Glenda's trust by shooting a detective when she was attempting to escape to the plane heading to Florida driven to the waterfront, they would then be picked up a skipper by the name of Roy (William 'Bill' Phillips) heading to a supposedly desolate island hideaway. It was there he meets Morgan Vallin (George Macready), and with Glenda with him he then calls her his wife, This news surprises Johnny which his objective is not so much with Glenda herself but with the possible criminal racket Morgan may be involved with.

The actor playing the main villain by the name of George Macready is echoing the same role he played in "Gilda" in 1946 for it is no coincidence the star's first name is "Johnny", topping the movie with inspirations from "Most Dangerous Game". Anyways, despite this being the less equivalent version of better films "Johnny Allegro" still has a superficial ending, and to some that is all that matters.

Ray Harryhausen mythical creatures are the highlights here

(1963) Jason and the Argonauts MYTHICAL FANTASY

It has Pelius (Douglas Wilmer) asking his prophecy about his chances about taking over a kingdom, the throne of Aristo. He informs him in order for that to happen, he must eliminate Aristo's two daughters and his only son, Jason. And when the raid does happen, Pelius manages to execute one of the two daughters, but the goddess Hera (Honor Blackman) appears and informs him that the only person he would needed to execute is Jason. She further warns Pelius were to do that, he would only be killing himself. 20 years later with the world of Zeus (Niall MacGinnis) he would then intervene and says his wife, Hera can only aid Jason (Todd Armstrong) on five different occasions for him to reclaim his throne. After some circumstances later Jason would then end up saving Pelius's life as he does not recognize who he was saving. And after all of these years Pelius still has not forgot what Hera had told him, and at that point he already has an adult son, Acastus (Gary Raymond) who volunteered to thwart Jason on his journey to travel the other side of the world to obtain the "golden fleece" he needs to reclaim the throne back. With the help of Hermes (Michael Gwynn) Jason was able to converse with both Zeus and his wife Hera himself. This is the set up for the creatures and mythical creatures by stop motion artist, Ray Harryhausen himself from Talos, to the Harpies and the fighting skeletons.

The Apartment (1996)

It was a confusing watch at first
28 January 2025
(1996) The Apartment/ L'appartement (In French with English subtitles)' PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA

The first time I saw this film, and it was on at midnight on one of those channels where it showed it uncut despite the long commercials. The scenes that confused me was the Vincent Cassel character who despite him being engaged to one person why he is pursing someone else. And when those flashbacks happened, at the time I could not tell some of them were happening at the present time or was that what happened before when he first met the character Monica Bellucci. But now that I am older after watching several movies I am able to understand it a little better.

Written and directed by Gilles Mimouni with businessman, Max Mayer (Vincent Cassel) hurrying on a business meeting at a restaurant before he flies out to Tokyo. Along the way, he meets his old friend, Lucien (Jean-Philippe Écoffey) both agree to meet again. And during their quick conversation, we also find out Max is also engaged to be married to a lady named Muriel (Sandrine Kiberlain) who eventually join him at the meeting. After the meeting was over he then decides to use the phone, except that the lone phone booth had already been occupied by a woman. Viewers may be able to tell it is a woman but can't quite make out her face since it was behind a blurred glass door. And while Max was waiting around to use the phone, he then decides to use the washroom since it is just right next to it. And as soon as he begins to recognize the woman's voice using the phone as Lisa (Monica Bellucci), he then rushes and tries to catch up to her, except that she has already had been gone, seeing nothing more but the glaze of her face. And it was at this point viewers see flashbacks about how both Max and Lisa had first met when he was a lowly shoe salesman working with his friend Lucien. And upon Max going back to the phone booth, he realizes Lisa may have dropped her hotel key, and decides to take advantage of the situation by using it. And while the hotel suite was empty, he then notices an ashtray with a ripped up newspaper article clipping and pieces them together like a puzzle. When Max pieced the small clipping together, it says art dealer Daniel de Fouquierer (Olivier Granier) had just lost his wife in a car crash with the specific date of the funeral, he himself intends to attend, for the possibility of seeing Lisa again. And while this was happening Max then postpones his plans to fly to Tokyo at the same time avoid having his fiance, Muriel spot him, so that with the help of his friend Lucien to find out about Lisa. Voyage to Agatis (2010 Video)
2/10
Another humuliation/ torture/ slasher movie
27 January 2025
(2010) Voyage to Agatis/ Reise nach Agatis (In German with English subtitles) HORROR

Marian Dora is credited for five jobs for this low budget filth who even with his hard core fans, the average rating for his movies overall is still quite poor. Besides Marian Dora credited as writer and director, it says he is also credited for "Sound Designer" , "Cinematographer" and "Editor". The set up has naked lady after we see her walking on the streets, she is then killed at the opening, viewers are oblivious who she or what she does for a living, but she is killed on a beach and since we are seeing it from the killer's point of view, we don't even get to see his face for we can do nothing but suspect. The next scene then introduces us to a couple of Rafael (Thomas Goersch) and Isabell (Tatjana Lommel) bickering with one another while driving to a restaurant. Rafael appear to be the domineering one and with his wife's displeasure, he tries to entice a blonde lady they met their to come with them to their boat 1938 ZD. This new passenger's name is Lisa (Janna Lisa Dombrowsky) to which it says here she is a prostitute. And while on the water, he puts on his uniform on that may be a SS or whatever while viewers look toy dolls and down the line skeletons at the sea. And after much time is wasted he begins mistreating his wife Isabella before he mistreats Lisa. The end does not leave anything to be desired as he appears to be able to get away with his killings with zero explanation. Some viewers picked up "Knife in the Water" here! And yes, the writer/ director Marian Dora may have been inspired by the Roman Polanski movie but done with a much lower budget.

The unexpected nuances is what defines this movie the most

(1965) Loves of a Blonde/ Lásky jedné plavovlásky (In Czechoslovakia with English subtitles) WAR DRAMA/ COMEDY

Co-written and directed by Milos Forman that uses the supporting the war efforts as a backdrop with Andula (Hana Brejchová) telling a friend about an already married soldier she had just met, before we then see her and her two friends of Jana (Jana Nováková) and Marie (Marie Salacová) sitting together on a table who are there is to serve and entertain soldiers on the dance hall. And while they notice three middle age soldier men noticing them, they hope they were calling the attention of some other ladies instead and not them. One of them happens to be married with a very amusing scene of him accidentally dropping his ring, after he tries to hide it and instead rolled onto underneath another ladies table. Andula notices the piano player, Milda Vasita (Vladimír Pucholt) who are about the same age, and as soon he manages to speak to her, he then tries to manipulate the situation by telling her all the things she wanted to hear, that may have persuade her to pack up a suitcase and move with him who lives in Prague.

What makes this film entertaining is the fact that viewers would not know what direction the story is going to lead up toward as many of the actions and dialogue appear to be spontaneous.

Beatriz (1976)
6/10
Gothic movie that was much more relevant during it's time
27 January 2025
(1976) Beatriz (In Spanish with English subtitles) FOLKLORE COSTUME HORROR

Adapted from the short stories by Ramón del Valle-Inclan) co-written and directed by Gonzalo Suárez with Juan (Óscar Martín) as the narrator, beginning with him in the forest spotting the friar before he runs away frightened. And it is not long before he is grabbed by bandits led by Lorenzo el Quinto threatening to kill him unless he were to comply with their demands. And as soon as he tells them the reason he ran away because the friar looked like the devil himself who was seen heading to the bridge, they then said they would let Juan go, if he is telling them the truth. Since Juan had no money or anything valuable with him, they figured they may be able to get something good if they were to rob from the friar. And by the time the friar reached to the bridge, the bandits were already ahead of him, and using one of their own as a ruse to draw him away from the trail, convincing him that one of their own wanted to confess his sins to him since he is dying. And just as they were about to grab and rob him from behind, the friar then ends up defending himself by pulling his sword out killing three, forcing others to run for their lives. Before he leaves, he then cuts the ear of one of the bandits he had killed, as witnessed by Juan himself who was hidden behind the bushes. By the time Juan comes home to tell his mom the countess, Doña Carlota (Carmen Sevilla) and his sisters about what happened, no one appear to believe him. During this was happening, the lowly lady, Basilisa (Nadiuska) who works for the countess as the family maid we then see her pleading to the witch doctor regarding her newborn who is dying. The witch doctor then instructs her to take whatever is presented on the front door step outside and stick it inside of a pillow to a person who is supposed to be holy and pure. That person she chooses to do this too happens to be Juan's sister, Beatriz (Sandra Mozarowsky)- hence the title, to which she sewn the bloody ear inside of Beatrice's pillow. The same ear the so-called friar had cut off from one of Lorenzo's dead bandit's. And throughout the entire movie, little Juan is trying to convince his older sisters and his mother, Doña Carlota about the friar it. No one appear to believe him just because he's a young boy, for the exception of his instructor, Máximo Bretal (José Sacristán). As soon as the family cat takes the ear away that was buried inside Beatriz's pillow, it is her that becomes sick while the baby gets better. Basilisa then pleads to the witch doctor she has felt bad about what she has done and that she may have made a mistake as she does not like to see the way Beatriz is suffering.

Great idea but heavily but overshadowed by the stupidity of the main protagonist Élizabeth
27 January 2025
Warning: Spoilers
(1978) The Grapes of Death/ Les raisins de la mort (In French with English subtitles) HORROR

Co-written and directed by Jean Rollin that showcases a small village aiding their farm by spreading pesticides, when one of them becomes nauseous. We are then taken aboard a train with only two friends on board, of Élizabeth and Brigitte become fast friends as one of one of them decide to use the washroom to freshen up. A man with some dissfiguration on his face enters into the train, and as soon as Élizabeth pops her head out to see whether her friend is coming back. She doesn't but what does show up is the infected man who walks straight directly to her compartment and begins to attack her forcing her to runaway. And she stumbles onto her friend, who is already dead. Élizabeth manages to run away and stumble onto an infected father and his daughter.

Who had thought one person can be responsible for so much misery and death. Who had thought one person in this example can call Élizabeth can be responsible even more misery and death. Élizabeth should have been the first person to be infected and face death. She was responsible for her friend, Brigette to get killed by not standing by the bathroom door just as she did for her; she was Mirella Rancelot responsible for the death of the blind girl, Lucie (Mirella Rancelot) by not telling her the truth about the infection of the village and letting the door open; Élizabeth shot and murdered the only two people who saved her life of Paul (Felix Marten) and Francois who brought her safely to the villa where she was supposed to have meet her fiance, Michel (Michel Herval). I as a viewer would prefer Élizabeth to be the first one to be killed or be infected as I became more less sympathetic with her since it was her fiance who created the entire mess in the first place. He owned the villa and created an already infected pesticide. Viewers are also kept in the dark why the blonde girl, (Brigitte Lahaye) did not like her and were conspiring with the infected. The two stars I give this movie is basically for the idea and not so much for the way the movie was handled.

Lost Paradise (2012)

If no one died then I do not mind the ambiguous ending
26 January 2025
(2012) Lost Paradise (In French with English subtitles) DRAMA

Co-written and directed by Ève Deboise with Hugo (Olivier Rabourdin) managing the farm with his teenage daughter, Lucie (Pauline Etienne) who sometimes takes driving lessons with their neighbor. And on occasion, Hugo employs immigrant, Hakim (Ouassini Embarek) for additional help. And they appear to be independent and make some money by going into town selling plants even though they have a garden until Lucie thought she saw her mom hanging around in the farmer's market. Lucie clearly misses her mom as clearly shows when she was smelling the clothing she had left behind that was put into a clear plastic bag before they were discarded by the dad. Complicating matters is when after a year of the mother, Sonia (Florence Thomassin) being absent, she decides to show up. Hugo still angry at her, he then locks her up in the garden shed with the first person to have seen her is Hakim. To which as soon as Hugo found out about him knowing about Sonia being locked up, he then kicks him out of the property threatened him if he ever reveal about this confinement to anymore, he would retaliate by telling locals he is a immigrant.

Although, the movie is ambiguous I did not mind as no one had died as a result of Hugo's actions, which was what I was afraid he might've done if his own wife left him for someone else.

It is during then she seeks help from a paranormal investigator, Anissa Bradley (Lisagaye Tomlinson) who may or may not be the solution to all of Haley's nightmares.

It should have been called "man on the run!"
26 January 2025
(1950) Woman on the Run CRIME DRAMA

Co-written and directed by Norman Foster with Frank Johnson (Ross Elliott) witnessing a murder while he was walking his dog in the middle of the night. The murderer tried to shoot him too but he managed to duck behind the concrete railway on the steps, forcing him to drive away when others heard the ruckus. By the time authorities arrived, with the one in charge of the case is Inspector Ferris (Robert Keith). After he informs Frank with a little more details why this particular person he was killed, that he happens to be a witness for the grand jury against a known gangster, Smiley Johnson. But after Frank learned he was a witness as well, he lost confidence for police protection, and runs away. This leads the inspector and the police to tag and follow his wife, Eleanor Johnson (Ann Sheridan) since she would be one of few Frank is going to come to contact with. And while reporters found out about the latest news as well, one aggressive reporter in particular makes sure to stick very close to her is reporter, Dan Legget (Dennis O'Keefe), we find out later is the killer himself.

Right from the get go, one can kind of guess who the killer may be as he was not shown at the opening. One of the major inconsistencies about this movie is the fact that because Frank is an artist, in terms of painter and so forth, he had the opportunity to sketch the killer himself for the police and to newspapers to avoid all the police resources that was wasted on finding him. Anyways, I originally gave this movie a thumbs down because of one of many inconsistencies but the dialogue exchanges still make this more entertaining than many of the movies of today.

Last Shift (I) (2014)

The ending sucked asking more questions than it was answering
25 January 2025
(2014) Last Shift PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR

Edited, co-written and directed by Anthony DiBlasi that has rookie cop, Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy) sent to an abandoned police station, and instructed by her superior superior, Sgt Grip Cohen (Hank Stone). And before he leaves, he also informs her some men are coming over to clean up the waste that was left behind. And it is not long before she begins to see things that are not their. That their was a reason why the Standford police station precinct was being abandoned and is in the process of moved to a new location. The fact that it has become haunted by the ghost of cult leader, John Michael Paymon (Joshua Mikel) and his followers of Kitty Katherine Knox (Sarah Sculco) and Dorthea (Kathryn Kilger) to name a few.

After I saw the end the way that it did, why was Loren selected to look after the haunted facility if her superior would not even do that himself! Why was Loren chosen to seeing things as opposed to other officers such as the Sergeant himself? Why were there no officers checking up on Officer Loren?

Talky and boring

(1960) Breathless/ À bout de souffle CRIME DRAMA

Co-written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard that has thug Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo) hiding out in his girlfriend's, Patricia Franchini (Jean Seberg) apartment while authorities are looking for him after killing a cop.

For almost the entire movie has (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and (Jean Seberg) just talking with one another sometimes while lying next to one another. And by the time he does come out, it was the worse thing he could have done. Because I watched it while I was still in school, this kind of thing kind of bores me. I do not understand the significance of this kind of this approach.

Adapted from the novel by Noël Calef co-written and directed by Louis Malle that has Florence Carala (Jeanne Moreau) having an extra marital affair with a lowly business associate, Julien Tavernier (Maurice Ronet). Florence manages to convince Julien to murder his boss, Simon Carala (Jean Wall) and make it look like a suicide. When the act does happen, complicating matters for them is when leaves a rope dangling on the side of the building with Cherrier (Lino Ventura) in charge of the case, for it is a matter of when they are going to be caught. One of the standouts is Miles Davis musical score used throughout.

The revelation of the Calendar Killer makes zero sense
24 January 2025
(2024) The Calendar Killer/ Sebastian Fitzeks Der Heimweg (In German with English subtitles) PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

At the intro from the news media about the "Calendar Killer" for the reason he has been given that name is because he jots the exact day each victim is going to be killed. The difference is viewers do not know who The Calendar killer is nor know what he looks like, until the very end. The next scene has Jules (Sabin Tambrea) in charge of his own call in hotline for women called "Walk Me Home Hotline" and giving some of helpful advice to a lady who phoned in regarding a group of men. And as a result of some advice, she managed to wait around long enough to get to her bus. Jules next caller is Klara (Luise Heyer) who she is on a midlife crisis claiming she was on the domain of the killer himself until she found a way to escape. And for the next hour or so, we know more about the lives of both Klara and Jules. From Klara and her so called important abusive husband, Martin (Friedrich Mücke) and how Jules became his own "walk me home" service operator that has something to do with the loss of his wife while he was working as a 911 operator.

The revelation that lead up to the Calendar killer makes no sense as viewers are completely oblivious about his connection and his other victims.
