I am disappointed by this movie. Expected brilliance but there isn't any. The script is rather poor and simplistic. Oda Nobunaga is presented as a deviant tyrant and psycho, with no shades of anything else, there's nothing to him that would indicate why that man has conquered and ruled most of Japan. It doesn't help that the actor in the role is overacting horribly. Other actors do a slightly better job but they are all poorly and superficially written. They are just figurines in the political intrigue. Costumes and weaponry are nice but budget limitations are very clear and sometimes the movie looks like it was made for TV.
Meh. What a disappointment. It's amazing that a movie about ancient Rome, filled with violence and political intrigue, is... boring. I thought it was impossible but I was wrong. I think there are two main reasons: 1. A very stupid script - naive, predictable and full of poor dialogue. This script is probably even worse than for "Napoleon". Scott and his screenwriter Scarpa seem to think that the IQ and the general knowledge of an average movie-goer are very low. 2. Poor direction. Scott didn't do a good job with this movie, despite a huge budget and lavish costumes it looks almost like a TV movie or a movie made straight for streaming. Even the combat scenes aren't really well directed, which is very rare for Ridley.
This may be the best Liam Neeson movie I've watched. But it's not a simple crime and revenge story that Neeson usually stars in. It surely has its moments of violence and action but it's also a psychological drama about ageing, memory loss and loneliness. Neeson is excellent in it. The direction, script, acting and photography are top notch. I also liked the musical score. Honestly I cannot find faults in this movie, but it's not a typical movie that audience expects when they go to watch Neeson rough up and shoot bad people. That's why I think there are low ratings and even some persons leave the cinema early. I enjoyed and I appreciate this film a lot.
