Although I tend to pick some rather unconventional films to deem "my favorites" it baffles me to see very little about this movie anywhere on the net, and even more people who have never seen it. Brilliantly cast, beautiful cinematography, and the surreal (yet very real at the same time) timescape, make this movie unsurpassable and should be a staple in anyones top ten list. I can't find any information when or IF this will be out on video or DVD and it bothers me even more to see such negative comments about it. I'm beginning to think I saw a different movie. Yes, its long and it borders vaguely on magical realism at times, but I think these are necessary in capturing 40 years of a couples normal (yet uniquely personal) life together in the matter of one year. I still feel the knot in my chest at the end when the clock actually starts ticking again, signifying the end of this emotional landslide of tragedy and happiness.
One side note I would like to point out is the question of who actually has seen this movie!! The comments I've seen on the net and the reviews its gotten make me wonder what audience actually went to see it and why no one else did. There was one scene where the eldest couple of Bea and Hank finally grasped what they had been missing all along. In this beautiful scene a couple have finally fallen back in love after what seems like 40 years and they are laying in bed nude. In this scene I was on the edge of tears and people were actually laughing and snickering that there was nudity of older people sleeping together. So if you are offended by experimental film techniques, dramatic climaxes, and most importantly images of people over the age of 23 nude, then maybe you shouldn't watch this movie. If not, find a copy or a showing of this movie right now and watch it.

No gore, no blood, no gratifying death scenes...dumb dumb dumb dumb. Dear God sitting through this movie made me sick. Sick sick sick. Very boring...extremely boring...
Theres not even a humorous aspect to this film! i cant find a good thing to say about it, other than the lead guy had a nice body...I guess. Definitely not worth the fifty cents I paid to rent it.

As with any modern horror movie I approached 13 Ghosts with a bit of a bias. Don't get me wrong I adore horror movies, but recently it seems they have been lacking. A lot of people associate horror movies with bad acting and bad special effects. However special effects packed 13 Ghosts might be, it still had the worst acting I have seen in a film with that kind of budget. Actors who have had decent roles in the past, such as Tony Shelhoub and Matthew Lillard, come up short in the sickening stereotyped roles of the strung out, overworked widower and the goofy likeable "dork" who saves the day, respectively. And lets not forget the sassy black nanny for comic relief! If you want to see this movie i would suggest arriving about 15 to 20 minutes late and then leaving 5 minutes early. Its very similar to Hause On Haunted Hill in which it has truck loads of potential but for the most part it comes up soggy and underdeveloped. It's obvious not much work was spent on the storyline and setting up the plot takes entirely too much time, only to be let down by a cheesy let's-all-hug-and-go-home ending. Not to mention the few strands of storyline that end up not even explained at all (i.e. the silver torches, the whole Cyrus thing, the ghost of the mother etc...). Over all the heart of the movie is great eye candy and there are some okay (and I do mean okay) scares. So if you like special effects and can ignore the bad acting and ending, its not a total waste but its also not something you and your friends will talk about for weeks to come.
