The musical crime film by Jacques Audiard made history this year at the Academy Awards by receiving 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. Gascón is the first openly trans woman to have been nominated for the honor, and many were speculating that the film and crew would win big at the awards.

However, such a feat seems difficult now that Karla Sofía Gascón’s old tweets have resurfaced causing a nightmare for the film. Truly racist and objectionable, one of her tweets even attacked the Oscars for their diversity.

Emilia Pérez star and Best Actress nominee Karla Sofia Gascón has apologized after several offensive social media posts she wrote resurfaced online on Thursday.
“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” Gascón said. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
Gascón, who made history last week as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress, came under fire for multiple social media posts that included inflammatory language about Muslims, George Floyd, diverse Oscar winners, and even the coronavirus.
In a since-deleted post from Nov. 22, 2020, Gascón wrote, “I’m sorry. Is it just my impression, or are there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I go...

For the past dozen years, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor has hailed from a Best Picture nominee. But that streak could finally end this year, based on Gold Derby’s predictions.
Kieran Culkin is the odds-on frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Real Pain. He plays Benjamin “Benji” Kaplan, who embarks on a roadtrip through Poland with his cousin, David Kaplan (Jesse Eisenberg), following the death of their grandmother. The Searchlight Pictures film also received a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Eisenberg, who directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the project, but it was snubbed in Best Picture.
Culkin has dominated the precursor awards and should he prevail at the Oscars, he would end a 12-year streak that began after Christopher Plummer won for Beginners (2011). Plummer notably claimed this award at age 82, making him the oldest acting winner at that time (an...

Hollywood’s biggest night? More like Hollywood’s messiest secret. The Oscars aren’t just about glitz and glam; they hide a darker side. Behind the golden statues and teary speeches, a tangled web of politics, personal grudges, and backroom deals runs the show.

Votes are cast, but merit, not always. Campaigning turns into a high-stakes game, and favoritism often eclipses talent. Those shiny awards aren’t always earned fair and square.

When it comes to superhero portrayals, fans often end up associating the actor and the character with one another. So much so that it is hard to see one without the other, and Chadwick Boseman is one such actor. Having achieved global stardom with his portrayal of Black Panther in the MCU, the actor tragically lost his life to colon cancer in 2020.

$3.8 billion. That’s the amount of money Clint Eastwood’s films have grossed at the North American box office throughout his career. A superstar since the 1960s, Eastwood is rare in that almost all of his biggest blockbusters, including all the Dirty Harry movies, were all made for Warner Bros. It’s been his home studio since about the time he made The Outlaw Josey Wales. He’s made everything from Oscar-winners to action movies, to movies where he’s chilling with his pal Clyde the Orangutan for them, and they almost always ended up at least breaking even. Sure, he’s had a few flops, but even in his golden years, he still cranked out smash hits for them, with American Sniper making over half a billion dollars, while The Mule and Sully both made over $100 million domestically. Even when his movies didn’t do well, Eastwood keeps his...

Lakeith Stanfield made his feature debut just over a decade ago, but in the years since, he's put together a career that would be notable for an actor working in Hollywood twice as long. He's made a name for himself on both television and the big screen, working in a variety of different genres and with exciting up-and-coming directors. With his penetrating stare and off-kilter sense of humor, Stanfield is an undeniably distinctive screen presence, and he's becoming one of the most fascinating actors of his generation. Over the course of his career, he's also gathered a collection of accolades, including an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2021 for his work in "Judas and the Black Messiah."
Although almost all of his performances are noteworthy in one way or another, there are a few that stand out as the best of the best. Here, we've assembled the most interesting...

Movies based on hit video games have been notoriously difficult to get right, but Hit-Monkey creators Will Speck and Josh Gordon have their sights set on adapting The Oregon Trail. Originally created in 1971, the adventure game was initially developed as an educational tool to teach middle school students about 19th-century pioneer life. Renowned for its frequently dark and often amusing outcomes, it would become synonymous with having its players repeatedly die of dysentery. Over the years, the game has seen countless remakes and spinoffs created, with a PlayStation 5 edition released as recently as February 2024.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Speck and Gordon have been tapped by Apple Studios to direct and produce a movie adaptation of The Oregon Trail based on a script penned by screenwriters and comedians The Lucas Bros. (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Max Reisman. The movie adaptation is also reported to feature original musical numbers in the vein of 2023s Barbie,...

Could Ridley Scott ride an overdue narrative to an Oscar win? Who or what will be the shocking snub or nomination this season? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.
Since “Gladiator II” has screened for press this week, Scott has surged to sixth place in the Best Director odds. The four-time Oscar nominee has an inconsistent track record at the Oscars and was surprisingly snubbed the last time he was firmly in a race, for 2015’s “The Martian.” But in a field that lacks a marquee name of the top contenders and with the possibility of “Dune: Part Two’s” Denis Villeneuve being snubbed again, will voters feel inclined to vote for the soon-to-be 87-year-old?

Biography is undoubtedly one of the most popular genres in existence, because people just love to watch a Wikipedia page come to life in live-action format. But as someone who has flunked his history exams quite a few times, I don’t like a by-the-numbers chronicling of the past. I love biographies that tend to have pizazz, if they have the audacity to be experimental with their storytelling, or if they are centered around a not-so-popular subject matter. Off the top of my head, I can name Schindler’s List, Ford v Ferrari, Elvis (the 2022 one), Rocketman, Jarhead, The Aviator, First Man, Spotlight, Serpico, Spencer, American Animals, Dog Day Afternoon, Tetris, Judas and the Black Messiah, Dolemite Is My Name, and Chopper as some of my favorite biopics. Now, it seemed like The Man Who Loved UFOs was tailor-made for me. It had a peculiar subject matter. The filmmaking looked good.

Daniel Kaluuya claimed there is “less hierarchy” on UK productions compared to the US while speaking at the BFI London Film Festival (Lff) today (October 9).
The UK actor, writer and director spoke of the key differences between working in the two countries, notably the impact of the lack of free healthcare in the US.
“I feel like there is much more anxiety in America because there’s a lot on the line. Here [in the UK], I think there’s a better work-life balance,” Kaluuya said.
“When you finish [a work day] you finish and the crew go to the pub and sometimes the cast will go the pub.

Daniel Kaluuya discussed the early days of his career in a Screen Talk on the opening day of the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday.
Speaking to fellow actor and close friend Ashley Walters, the Oscar winner took time to salute his Screen Talk host, someone he said had provided major inspiration when he was just starting out in the mid-2000s.
Kaluuya said seeing Walters’ face on the cover of a magazine while shopping in a supermarket was the “moment I believed it could happen… I was like, ‘Oh, he looks like me.'”
While Kaluuya may be one of the best known British actors working today — and one with a statue recently unveiled in his honor in central London — he said it was Walters’ work on screen that “really gave me the kind of belief” that a career as an actor was a possibility. Daniel Kaluuya will be honored with a statue in his home city of London celebrating the actor’s breakout role in 2017 hit “Get Out.”
The Oscar-winning star, now considered one of the U.K.’s finest on-screen talents, was chosen from a poll of 5,000 British film fans as the actor people would most like to see as part of the “Scenes in the Square” trail in Leicester Square, landing one fifth of the vote. His statue — depicting the famed ‘Sunken Place’ scene in “Get Out” in which Kaluuya’s character falls into a hypnosis-induced suppressed metaphysical abyss — will be unveiled in October.
Kaluuya joins an eclectic array of statues on the trail from the past century of cinema, including Harry Potter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Mary Poppins and Gene Kelly. These figures were unveiled 4 years ago and have since seen additions such as the “Game of Thrones” iron throne, Clifford the...

In 2023, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said that the company would be slowing down its Disney+ TV slate, which included the highly-anticipated "Ironheart" series. The announcement came after the first D23 celebration following the quarantine era of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2022, where a short preview look was shown to an eager audience. It's been two years since the footage of Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) in her solo adventure series was presented to the public and since the character made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," but 2024's D23 event showed our best look at Riri yet.Joining Thorne is "In the Heights" breakout Anthony Ramos, who will play The Hood, alongside "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and "Oppenheimer" star Alden Ehrenreich. Lyric Ross ("This Is Us"), drag queen Shea Couleé, Shakira Barrera ("Glow"), Manny Montana, and Zoe Terakes round out the supporting cast.

Hip-hop pioneer Rakim is back with a new song, “Be Ill,” the lead single from his first new album in 15 years, G.O.D.’s Network (Reb7rth), out July 26.
On “Be Ill,” Rakim is as lyrically dexterous as ever, rhyming, “Design flows in binary codes, no matrix/Light-speeds, time could be froze, no spaceships/Walking paradox, I made them all believers/Shift the paradigm, even time, alter features.” The song also finds Rakim bringing the two coasts together with guest verses from Wu-Tang Clan member Masta Killa and Tha Dogg Pound Mc Kurupt.

Plot: The incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Huey Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the help of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan – involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly.

At the same time, the A-Listers are imploring the ever increasingly conglomerated industry to keep their eyes on the social impact prize.

The duo will produce alongside H.E.R., with Winfrey producing via her Harpo Films, and Sanders through Scott Sanders Productions.
Lauren Ashley Smith has been tapped to pen the script for what is being described as dance movie set at a fictional Historically Black College or University (Hbcu) in Atlanta. The story follows an introverted ballet dancer from L.

Projects centered around the left-wing revolutionary group, the Black Panther Party, continue to fascinate popular culture. In 2022, Daniel Kaluuya won an Oscar for portraying the betrayed deputy chairman, Fred Hampton, in the bio-crime drama, “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Now, a new limited series, “The Big Cigar,” based on a Playboy Article by Joshuah Bearman (known for the Wired Article that inspired “Argo”), tells the too-good-to-be-true story of Black Panther co-founder Huey Percy Newton’s escape to Cuba with the assistance of a famous film producer.

End of an era, end of a business model, end of a gravy train, end of the world. There were plenty of mixed emotions this week in response to the closure of Oscar-winning production company Participant, and at the very least the industry has agreed something has come to an end.
When Variety broke the news Tuesday that billionaire Jeff Skoll’s 20-year-old company will shut down — after fetching 21 Oscars and introducing a business model that prioritized social impact a bit more than profits – many in the industry were rattled. Not just that mid-level, standalone financier and producer had left the market, but what that means for the viability of movies and TV shows that ask vital questions about justice and the humanity’s future.

The shocking news that Participant, a leading producer of specialized/independent features with a socially relevant interest as well many top documentaries, is shutting down immediately hit the industry hard Tuesday. With a profile of co-produced films over the last 20 years that rivals any other company’s slate, this was devastating news.
Founder and owner Jeff Skoll’s decision to shut down his company will impact the production of a certain kind of specialized film, particularly in the documentary field. Never a distributor, and most often collaborating with other production companies, Participant was still a significant force for most of its two decades.
But what’s the real impact of this move? Jonathan Dana, a veteran distribution executive and producer, commented, “It didn’t fail. It just ran its course.” That typifies much of the insider reaction, which relates to the specific purpose and goals of the company.
