Bectu Launches Biggest Ever Survey
British broadcasting union Bectu is launching what it is calling its largest ever survey of those working behind the scenes in TV and film. The union is asking workers across the UK’s creative industries about their experiences and views on key issues facing the sector, including pay, employment practices, mental health and wellbeing and finances. The move comes with the freelance workforce in a perilous position, with thousands exiting the sector as they struggle for work and grapple with low pay and poor conditions. Bectu has repeatedly stressed that this is worsening as time goes on. “Creative industry workers are critical to our economy and to our social and cultural fabric,” said Bectu head Philippa Childs. “But data on creative workers is lacking. The freelance nature of the creative industries means that freelancers often fall through data gaps on employment statistics, while without formal employment structures,...

Alexandra Breckenridge has become almost a household name due to her phenomenal performance in Virgin River. The show finds her portraying Melinda Monroe, opposite Martin Henderson’s Jack Sheridan.

Based on Robyn Carr’s popular book series of the same name, the show just concluded its sixth season last December. Fascinatingly, it had already been renewed for another season before Season 6 even premiered.
However, things might have been vastly different if Alexandra Breckenridge stuck to a drastic decision she made ahead of the show. The actress recently revealed that she almost turned down the role off the bat, even though she felt suited for it. Thankfully, the showrunners changed her mind.

Netflix’s 2025 lineup is stacked, with new seasons of Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Wednesday on the horizon. But fans of some of the streamer’s more popular shows are out of luck. Several titles were noticeably absent from the recent “Next on Netflix” event, the company’s preview of films, series, and games coming in 2025.
‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 and ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Season 4 missing from Netflix’s 2025 lineup
The splashy event – which was held at Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theatre on Jan. 29 – teased a number of high-profile coming releases, including movies like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Rip with Ben Affleck, live streaming events like Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, and prestige TV like Zero Day and The Beast In Me. Fan-favorite shows Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Wednesday will also return this year.

It’s been quite a long time since any streaming titles popped the way that Squid Game did with the debut of Season 2.
Nielsen says that the Netflix series racked up more than 4B (4.6B to be exact) viewing minutes for the second consecutive week from December 30 to January 5, which is a feat not accomplished since Wednesday did so in November 2022. While Nielsen doesn’t separate viewing by season, the company did say that 80% of the watch time during this interval went to Season 2.
It’s likely that Squid Game will continue to put up impressive numbers, since according to Netflix the second season was seeing record viewership into January.
Six other titles scored over 1B viewing minutes, including Virgin River with 1.39B, marking its third week in second place since Season 6 premiered on December 19.
Paramount+ seems to have a hit on its hands with Landman, which generated 1.3B minutes viewed during this week,...

Paramount+’s Landman continued its upward trajectory in the first few days of 2025, hitting its best viewing-time mark so far in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Squid Game had a second straight huge week for Netflix as well.
The Korean hit drew just under 4.6 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, topping the 4 billion mark again a week after its season two premiere. The series fell by less than 7 percent week-to-week from the 4.92 billion minutes it had for its long-awaited return.
Landman snagged 1.3 billion minutes of watch time in the week leading up to its ninth episode. The Taylor Sheridan series, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has improved its totals in every week since it first hit the rankings in late November.
Two other shows also reached a billion minutes to open the year: Virgin River came in at 1.39 billion for Netflix, and Missing You...

Even though there was overwhelming happiness in Virgin River with Mel and Jack's wedding at the end of season 6, there's a bit of bad news we have to share with fans. Yes, the beloved Netflix romantic drama will be back with another season, but the streamer has now hinted that Virgin River season 7 might not arrive until 2026.
On Jan. 30, Netflix unveiled its exciting lineup of content set for release in 2025, including new movies and show, documentaries, games, and of course, its most popular original series. The likes of Stranger Things, Wednesday, Nobody Wants This, Ginny & Georgia, Squid Game, and more were officially confirmed to premiere this year (and some even got release dates!).
Unfortunately, Virgin River season 7 wasn't featured on the lengthy list of Netflix shows coming this year. Instead, it's included on the shorter list of shows that will most likely release in 2026. Since the most recent season...

Netflix just released a sizzle reel spotlighting some of the big shows it will be airing this year. And there are some whoppers, especially if you're into the sci-fi/fantasy/genre side of things. The third and final season of Squid Game is coming in June, and the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is coming along sometime after that. The second season of the megahit series Wednesday will turn up this year, as will the fourth season of The Witcher, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Netflix has a full year ahead of them.
In addition to videos like this one, Netflix gave members of the press a big list of everything that's coming this year, and there were a few notable absences. Probably the biggest is that the second season of One Piece was nowhere to be found on Netflix's schedule. The first...

With all good news, there's usually a bit of bad news, too. Netflix unveiled the new and returning shows coming throughout 2025, and while it's exciting to learn that shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday, Emily in Paris, Nobody Wants This, and more will be back this year, there's also a catch. Some of our favorite shows were sadly missing from that list.
On Wednesday, Jan. 30, Netflix closed out the first month of 2025 by giving fans a glimpse at the shows they can look forward to later this year. While some fan-favorites like Ginny & Georgia and Squid Game received June release dates for their respective third seasons, plenty of other established hit series were also included on the list to make comebacks in 2025.

Ever since Season 4 of Stranger Things was dropped in two parts, seven episodes on May 27, 2022 followed by the last two episodes on July 1, Netflix has been employing the split-season release strategy for some of its biggest shows.
Virgin River‘s fifth season released 10 episodes in September 2023, followed by a two-episode season finale/holiday special almost two months later. The same year, The Witcher‘s third season also came in two batches, 8 episodes and 3 episodes, almost a month apart, with The Crown’s final season divided into four-episode and six-episode installments, also four weeks apart.
In 2024, Netflix started splitting seasons in half, with the latest seasons of Bridgerton, Emily In Paris and Outer Banks all scheduled that way.
There have been different explanations for Netflix’s pivot away from their signature binge drop releases. The streamer at the time justified the Stranger Things two-part Season 4 with the fact that the VFX...

There are some absolute monsters of shows that fans are waiting to hear more news about. The main news we all want is, of course, when we will see new seasons for some top shows. Netflix has just unveiled plans for their 2025 series plans, but what they haven't said is as important as what they did tell us.
Of course, we’ll all be glad to hear there are new seasons this year for the likes of Wednesday, Squid Games, and Emily in Paris, plus a whole load more. You’ll hear all the information we know about them here on Netflix Life for sure. But when you see the new list of 2025 shows it’ll leave you asking one big question.
‘What about..[insert here some of your favorites that aren't on that list]?’ That's where what Netflix hasn't said comes into play. As a general rule, it means if a series isn't on the Netflix 2025 list then we’ll...

On Wednesday, Netflix announced a list of shows that would be returning with new episodes this year. There were some notable ommissions.
The list of popular TV shows on Netflix is incredibly long. The streamer’s crews are at work around the clock on delivering new episodes of titles like “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday,” but even Netflix can’t turn out new seasons of every show fans want to see yearly. The streamer announced a list of new shows coming to its platform this season on Wednesday at its Next on Netflix presentation, and while there are some very popular titles on it, there are also some glaring omissions.
Key Details: “Squid Games,” “Stranger Things,” and “Wednesday” will all release new seasons on Netflix this year. “Beef,” “Bridgerton,” “Virgin River,” and other popular Netflix shows won’t return until at least 2026. Some of the seasons not scheduled to come back...

Netflix this morning unveiled its 2025 series slate that includes the final seasons of juggernauts Squid Game and Stranger Things and the returns of Wednesday, Ginny & Georgia, Monster, Emily In Paris and The Witcher among many others. But missing from the list are a number of popular shows, including the fifth and final season of Outer Banks, Season 4 of Bridgerton and The Lincoln Lawyer, Season 2 of One Piece, The Gentlemen, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Beef, Black Doves and 3 Body Problem as well as Season 7 of Virgin River.
Not everything is final, and there could be some scheduling changes in Q4 — for instance, The Lincoln Lawyer S3 and Virgin River S6 originally were not on Netflix’s 2024 slate but managed to deliver new seasons for October and December release, respectively, while The Night Agent‘s second season, originally on the 2024 slate, slid to January 2025.

As last year wound down, the Disney TV empire — counting broadcasters like ABC, streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu along with cable channels like FX — managed to stave off YouTube in the race for viewing marketshare in the attention economy.
Disney’s brands saw about 11.2 percent of overall TV viewing in the United States, just ahead of YouTube’s 11.1 percent share, per Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge for December. Having the most-viewed TV series of 2024, Bluey, which tallied 55.62 billion minutes watched last year, certainly helped. And, in fact, all five of the top five most-viewed series of 2024 — Grey’s Anatomy, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and NCIS among them — were all available to watch on a Disney platform.
YouTube, meanwhile, appears to be reaping the benefits by orienting its app as a viewing destination on TV sets instead of just as a second screen for videos. The Google-owned platform claimed...

Disney claimed the largest share of TV viewing for the fourth consecutive month in December 2024, per Nielsen’s latest Media Distributor Gauge report.
After taking the largest share of TV viewing for September, October and November, the Walt Disney company accounted for the biggest share of TV viewing in December with an 11.2% share, improving slightly from its 11.1% share in November.
Nielsen attributes the 6% increase in viewing to surges across cable, including FX’s 45% bigger audience, Freeform’s nearly double audience during its 25 Days of Christmas movie event as well as ESPN’s football audience. As usual, “Bluey” on Disney+ was widely watched, clocking in as the second-most watched streaming title of the month with 5.3 billion total viewing minutes in December.

Netflix is famous for its adaptations, whether it be Bird Box the cheesy To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, or the mystifying The Queen’s Gambit. Although it is true that not all projects turn out to be as successful, most end up becoming fan favorites thanks to their meticulous adaptations.
One of these many adaptations is the six-season and continuing series Virgin River.

While TV audiences have enjoyed the story and are eager to see more, the series is actually based on author Robyn Carr’s 22 books series. Needless to say, even the best adaptations lack authenticity and usually have to take detours for the sake of the medium. Between December 23 and December 29, 2024, Squid Game became the most-watched series in a single week, racking up a staggering 4.9 billion minutes viewed, according to Nielsen.
This number includes views from both seasons of the hit Korean drama, but most of the attention was on Season 2, which debuted on Netflix on December 26. In just four days, Season 2 alone contributed over 4 billion minutes to that total.
The second season got off to a historic start, pulling in 68 million total views within four days—more than any Netflix show has achieved at launch. By the 11-day mark, it hit an unmatched 126.2 million views.

Given the popularity of Squid Game, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that season 2 of the thriller series would be enormously successful. Well, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, not only did Squid Game season 2 blow away the rest of the competition, but it had the biggest premiere of the entire year with 4.92 billion minutes viewed.
Keep in mind that Nielsen’s streaming ratings only measure U.S. audiences and just cover viewing on TV sets, not computers or mobile devices. The top streaming titles for December 23-29 include:

“Squid Game” was the most-viewed series in a single week in 2024, with 4.9 billion minutes watched between Dec. 23 and Dec. 29, per Nielsen.
Season 2 of the Korean deathmatch drama debuted on Netflix on Dec. 26, so that whopping viewership number includes people catching up on the first season as well as bingeing the second. Those minutes viewed are spread across 16 episodes of “Squid Game” in total, but Season 2 accounted for more than 4 billion of those viewing minutes, from Dec. 26 to Dec. 29. Of course, viewership has continued to grow throughout 2025.
While “Squid Game” more than doubled the second-most-watched series that week, seven other film and TV titles notched more than a billion minutes viewed from Dec. 23 to Dec. 29. Netflix’s “Virgin River” nabbed 2.2 billion minutes viewed (across 64 episodes), Dwayne Johnson’s Christmas pic “Red One” got 1.8 billion and Netflix’s Tsa thriller “Carry-On” ended up with 1.5 billion. The other titles to cross a billion are “The Six Triple Eight,...
26 to Dec. 29. Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.
The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.
The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Netflix had earlier said season two set a worldwide record for a premiere week, based on the streamer’s internal data.

It should come as no surprise that Squid Game dominated streaming following the Season 2 debut, but Nielsen’s latest streaming report reveals that it actually set a record for a single week of viewership last year.
From December 23 to 29, Squid Game amassed a whopping 4.9B minutes viewed. Season 2 became available on December 26, so this interval only includes four days of viewing for it. However, Nielsen doesn’t separate viewership by season, so this would also include any viewing time that Season 1 collected that week as well.
For context, though, the series was nowhere to be found on the Nielsen charts even one week prior to Season 2’s debut. Also worth noting, Nielsen only reports U.S. viewership, meaning that the global audience was likely much bigger.
This is also far bigger than Season 1’s debut week, when the series collected about 3B minuted viewed (which is already an impressive feat). As Deadline previously reported,...

What a difference a year makes. Max dominated the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report in the second half of 2024, thanks to hit series like “House of the Dragon,” “The Penguin,” and “Dune: Prophecy.” But since the calendar has turned to 2025, the chart has belonged to Paramount+ and “Landman.”
The drama, led by Billy Bob Thornton, has topped the chart two weeks in a row now. This week, the show rode the wave of its finale, which was made available on Jan. 12.
The series has been another feather in the cap of its creator, super writer/director/producer Taylor Sheridan, who has been behind most of the biggest hits on Paramount+, including “Tulsa King” and “Special Ops: Lioness.”
The stiffest competition for “Landman” comes in the form of another series set in the American west, “American Primeval,” from Netflix. The period miniseries is set in 1857, during the Utah War, which pitted...

The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.
The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)
That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.
Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

Netflix's new Western series has become a global success. Producing original movies and TV shows since the early 2010s, the streaming service's catalog of Western content now offers a diverse range of stories exploring the rugged charm of the American frontier. Longmire was A&e's highest-rated original drama before Netflix picked it up in 2014, starting with season four, and releasing the sixth and final season in 2017. Around that same time, the Western miniseries Godless was also released on Netflix to rave reviews.
The Coen brothers' Western anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, was released on Netflix in 2018, presenting six separate tales that blend humor and tragedy and showcase the unpredictability of frontier life. The Harder They Fall, released on Netflix in 2021, is one of the few Westerns with a predominantly Black cast, showcasing a diverse narrative and fresh perspective within the genre. The brief return of Ricky in Virgin River season 6 hints that the show might solve a Lizzie mystery by following a storyline involving him in the Robyn Carr books. Netflix’s drama follows a nurse named Mel who makes a new home Virgin River, California. Even though she doesn’t know anyone when she arrives, the people who live in the small town become like family to her. After almost quitting Virgin River, one fan theory fixed my biggest complaint, offering me a new enjoyment of the series. Based on the Virgin River book series by Robyn Carr, the Netflix romantic drama follows a nurse named Mel who creates a home in the idyllic town of Virgin River, California. The show has run for six seasons, with a seventh on the way. I was introduced to Virgin River when season 4 came out. As much as I want to like it, I have a love-hate relationship with the Netflix show.
Virgin River’s characters and their relationships with one another are enjoyable to watch; however, the inconsistent timeline bothers me so much that I’ve nearly quit watching the show about a dozen times. One or two inconsistent elements can be forgiven with a suspension of disbelief. However, I need...

Netflixhas landed the rights to a popular romance novel series, planning to turn the wild premise into a television series. The genre is a reliable hit for the streamer, with Bridgerton often getting the biggest headlines because it generates the highest numbers. However, relatively quieter series such as Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias are consistent performers with a loyal audience.
Virgin River is confirmed to return for season 7 and Sweet Magnolias season 4 will be back in February. Both shows are lighter and more grounded, avoiding getting too dark and generally remaining on the optimistic side of the ledger. That won't be the case with the latest romantic saga that Netflix is hoping to adapt.

It seemed impossible to have another massive streaming hit in 2024, but Netflix accepted the challenge in a major way. The second season of the streamer’s international mega-hit “Squid Game” arrived on Dec. 26, officially ending the holiday season with a steady stream of blood and violence, shattering all kinds of viewership records in the process.
The South Korean series was seen in 2.2 million U.S. households in the first four days it was available, according to Samba TV data, a massive debut no matter the time of year.
However, this week’s edition of the Wrap Report looks at the full week following that big debut. The page-to-screen adaptations keep on coming to Netflix, and this time, it's another BookTok hit that could become everyone's next Netflix guilty pleasure binge-watch.
On Jan. 9, Variety revealed that Netflix had officially snatched up the rights to Twisted Love, the best-selling romance novel by Ana Huang that has taken TikTok by storm and launched a full series of books. The outlet reports that the streamer secured the rights to Twisted Love and its three sequels for a television series adaptation. The deal for Huang's novels was said to be seven figures.
Apart from the news of Twisted Love being snagged by Netflix for a lucrative deal that would put it into millions of homes worldwide, there isn't any additional information about the in-development series adaptation. No writers or producers seem to currently be attached, and the show hasn't gotten an official green light. But with a seven-figure deal, this seems like a no brainer!

An airplane thriller with 80% on Rotten Tomatoes becomes a global hit on Netflix more than four years after its debut. Though it arrived very late in the year, the airplane thriller premise received a boost with Carry-On. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, with T. J. Fixman writing the script. The story centers on a Tsa officer who's blackmailed into allowing a nerve agent on board a flight during Christmas Eve. The cast of Carry-On is led by Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Jason Bateman.
By the start of 2025, Carry-On demolished records to become the fifth-most-watched English-language Netflix Original of all time. That data will soon be backed up by Nielsen's streaming charts. But the initial response underlines the holiday-themed thriller struck a nerve with audiences. Another plane-centric suspense saga is catching on with subscribers, albeit four years after it originally premiered on a rival platform.

Virgin River season 6, episode 5, "Love Story," is one of the most controversial episodes of the new season. What's now known as the "Brie and Brady episode" was actually written by Cobra Kai star Thomas Ian Griffith, who stars as Terry Silver in The Karate Kid movies as well as Netflix's Cobra Kai, and Mary Page Keller.

Harlan Coben's brand-new 2025 Netflix thriller has found itself at the top of the streaming platform's global charts. The American author is one of the most successful mystery-thriller writers in the world, having written more than 30 novels that have collectively sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. 12 of Coben's novels have been adapted for the screen, including The Five, which aired on Sky 1 in the UK, and the one-season hit Shelter, which aired on Prime Video. Coben's stories are known for their mix of interpersonal drama with thriller elements.
Back in 2018, Coben signed a multi-million-dollar, five-year deal with Netflix, under which 14 of his novels would be adapted for the streaming platform across different territories and languages. His debut Netflix show was Michael C. Hall's mystery thriller Safe in May 2018. The psychological thriller series featured the story of a widower father whose daughter goes missing, leading him to discover dark truths.

Squid Game has quickly taken over Netflix since the release of Season 2.
In its first full week on the streamer, the second season racked up 58.2M views from December 30 to January 5, not only maintaining its position as most-watched title of the week, but soaring to the second most-watched non-English title of all time — behind only Season 1.
Add that to the 68M views it tallied in its first three days and Season 2 is now sitting at 126.2M views in 11 days. That makes it the fourth most-streamed series on the streamer, also behind Wednesday and Stranger Things 4.
At this rate, it would not be surprising to see Season 2 eventually surpass its predecessor as Netflix’s top title of all time. It’s got another 79 days to get 139M additional views in order to take that crown.
Speaking of Season 1, it was the No. 2 non-English title of the week with 13.6M views. Though...

Season 2 of “Squid Game” is racking up views at a record pace. After topping Netflix’s charts last week with 68 million views in four days — Netflix’s biggest TV debut ever — the season picked up another 58.2 million views in its first full week of availability. That brings it to a total of 126.2 million views total across 11 days, more than any Netflix series has ever achieved in that amount of time.
“Squid Game” Season 2 immediately cracked Netflix’s list of its most popular non-English-language series last week, but this week it jumped from No. 7 to No. 2. Only “Squid Game” Season 1 still outpaces it, having achieved 265.2 million views in its first 91 days of streaming, but Season 2 appears likely to outpace it, having 80 days left to continue accumulating views.
Naturally, the season was the most-watched English-language series of the week of Dec. 30 to Jan. 5 — as well as the most Netflix title of the week overall.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Virgin River season 6.
In the final episode of Virgin River season 6, Brie came clean about her affair with Brady, but somehow, Mike already knew. Virgin River season 6 was released exclusively on Netflix on December 19th, 2024, and the season was chock-full of shocking twists. In addition to revealing what happened with Preacher's murder trial, the Virgin River season 6 finale cliffhanger left audiences anxious about the fate of one major character in particular.
Yet another major plot point in the finale involved the increasingly complicated love triangle between Brie, Brady, and Mike. During season 6, Brie and Brady slept with one another, despite both of them being in a relationship with other people at the time. Shockingly, Mike still proposed to Brie even though he knew what had happened between Brie and Brady (before Brie confessed). The question remains: how did Mike already know that Brady and Brie had slept together?...

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Virgin River season 6.
Virgin River season 6 was released on Netflix on December 19th, 2024, and it delved considerably deeper into the story of Mel's parents—but what happened to Mel's mother, Sarah? Following the many twists and turns of season 5, Virgin River season 6 covered significant ground, including finally revealing the outcome of Preacher's murder trial and depicting Mel and Jack's long-awaited walk down the aisle. A major focus of season 6 was also Mel's relationship with her biological father, Everett, with whom she had only just recently connected.
Prior to season 6, very little had been revealed about Mel's parents, her mother included. However, this relationship between Mel and her father inevitably meant that Virgin River also had to reveal more about Mel's mother, especially because the situation with Mel's biological father is so complicated. Even after the conclusion of Virgin River season 6, though, a number of...
