British broadcasting union Bectu is launching what it is calling its largest ever survey of those working behind the scenes in TV and film. The union is asking workers across the UK’s creative industries about their experiences and views on key issues facing the sector, including pay, employment practices, mental health and wellbeing and finances. The move comes with the freelance workforce in a perilous position, with thousands exiting the sector as they struggle for work and grapple with low pay and poor conditions. Netflix’s 2025 lineup is stacked, with new seasons of Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Wednesday on the horizon. But fans of some of the streamer’s more popular shows are out of luck. Several titles were noticeably absent from the recent “Next on Netflix” event, the company’s preview of films, series, and games coming in 2025.

The splashy event – which was held at Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theatre on Jan. 29 – teased a number of high-profile coming releases, including movies like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Rip with Ben Affleck, live streaming events like Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, and prestige TV like Zero Day and The Beast In Me. Fan-favorite shows Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Wednesday will also return this year.

But what about Bridgerton, The Lincoln Lawyer, Virgin River, and other popular series? Fans...

It’s been quite a long time since any streaming titles popped the way that Squid Game did with the debut of Season 2.

Nielsen says that the Netflix series racked up more than 4B (4.6B to be exact) viewing minutes for the second consecutive week from December 30 to January 5, which is a feat not accomplished since Wednesday did so in November 2022. While Nielsen doesn’t separate viewing by season, the company did say that 80% of the watch time during this interval went to Season 2.

It’s likely that Squid Game will continue to put up impressive numbers, since according to Netflix the second season was seeing record viewership into January.

Six other titles scored over 1B viewing minutes, including Virgin River with 1.39B, marking its third week in second place since Season 6 premiered on December 19.

Paramount+’s Landman continued its upward trajectory in the first few days of 2025, hitting its best viewing-time mark so far in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Squid Game had a second straight huge week for Netflix as well.

The Korean hit drew just under 4.6 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, topping the 4 billion mark again a week after its season two premiere. The series fell by less than 7 percent week-to-week from the 4.92 billion minutes it had for its long-awaited return.

Landman snagged 1.3 billion minutes of watch time in the week leading up to its ninth episode. The Taylor Sheridan series, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has improved its totals in every week since it first hit the rankings in late November.

Netflix this morning unveiled its 2025 series slate that includes the final seasons of juggernauts Squid Game and Stranger Things and the returns of Wednesday, Ginny & Georgia, Monster, Emily In Paris and The Witcher among many others. But missing from the list are a number of popular shows, including the fifth and final season of Outer Banks, Season 4 of Bridgerton and The Lincoln Lawyer, Season 2 of One Piece, The Gentlemen, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Beef, Black Doves and 3 Body Problem as well as Season 7 of Virgin River.

Not everything is final, and there could be some scheduling changes in Q4 — for instance, The Lincoln Lawyer S3 and Virgin River S6 originally were not on Netflix’s 2024 slate but managed to deliver new seasons for October and December release, respectively, while The Night Agent‘s second season, originally on the 2024 slate, slid to January 2025.

As last year wound down, the Disney TV empire — counting broadcasters like ABC, streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu along with cable channels like FX — managed to stave off YouTube in the race for viewing marketshare in the attention economy.

Disney’s brands saw about 11.2 percent of overall TV viewing in the United States, just ahead of YouTube’s 11.1 percent share, per Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge for December. Between December 23 and December 29, 2024, Squid Game became the most-watched series in a single week, racking up a staggering 4.9 billion minutes viewed, according to Nielsen.

This number includes views from both seasons of the hit Korean drama, but most of the attention was on Season 2, which debuted on Netflix on December 26. In just four days, Season 2 alone contributed over 4 billion minutes to that total.

The second season got off to a historic start, pulling in 68 million total views within four days—more than any Netflix show has achieved at launch. By the 11-day mark, it hit an unmatched 126.2 million views.

This makes Squid Game Season 2 Netflix’s most successful debut ever and the platform’s third most-watched season overall, trailing only the first season of Squid Game and Wednesday.

The Season 2 debut of “Squid Game” boosted the Netflix series to reach the biggest weekly streaming audience any show has seen in 2024, according to Nielsen’s streaming charts.

With the second installment debuting Dec. 26 on Netflix, “Squid Game” drew 4.92 billion minutes over its two seasons in the interval between Dec. 23 to Dec. 29. Viewership for “Squid Game” was more than double that of Netflix’s “Virgin River,” which scored a whopping 2.25 billion viewing minutes as the second most-watched streaming program of the week.

Dwayne Johnson-led “Red One” also scored an impressive streaming viewership as the holiday movie scored 1.81 billion viewing minutes on Prime Video during the week, clocking in as the third most-watched program of the week. Next up was holiday thriller “Carry-On,” which scored 1.54 billion viewing minutes on Netflix,...

Given the popularity of Squid Game, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that season 2 of the thriller series would be enormously successful. Well, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, not only did Squid Game season 2 blow away the rest of the competition, but it had the biggest premiere of the entire year with 4.92 billion minutes viewed.

Keep in mind that Nielsen’s streaming ratings only measure U.S. audiences and just cover viewing on TV sets, not computers or mobile devices. The top streaming titles for December 23-29 include:

Season 2 of the Korean deathmatch drama debuted on Netflix on Dec. 26, so that whopping viewership number includes people catching up on the first season as well as bingeing the second. Those minutes viewed are spread across 16 episodes of “Squid Game” in total, but Season 2 accounted for more than 4 billion of those viewing minutes, from Dec. 26 to Dec. 29. Of course, viewership has continued to grow throughout 2025.

While “Squid Game” more than doubled the second-most-watched series that week, seven other film and TV titles notched more than a billion minutes viewed from Dec. 23 to Dec. 29. Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.

The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Netflix had earlier said season two set a worldwide record for a premiere week, based on the streamer’s internal data.

It should come as no surprise that Squid Game dominated streaming following the Season 2 debut, but Nielsen’s latest streaming report reveals that it actually set a record for a single week of viewership last year.

From December 23 to 29, Squid Game amassed a whopping 4.9B minutes viewed. Season 2 became available on December 26, so this interval only includes four days of viewing for it. However, Nielsen doesn’t separate viewership by season, so this would also include any viewing time that Season 1 collected that week as well.

For context, though, the series was nowhere to be found on the Nielsen charts even one week prior to Season 2’s debut. Also worth noting, Nielsen only reports U.S. viewership, meaning that the global audience was likely much bigger.

Hallmark has started production on a new series called Providence Falls. According to Creative BC, this is a limited three-episode series produced by Reckless Pictures. They began filming on January 14 and will complete production on March 24. Moreover, this trio of movies will have two directors. Firstly, Lucie Guest, who directed The Santa Class, and starred in Holidazed is the first director.

What a difference a year makes. Max dominated the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report in the second half of 2024, thanks to hit series like “House of the Dragon,” “The Penguin,” and “Dune: Prophecy.” But since the calendar has turned to 2025, the chart has belonged to Paramount+ and “Landman.”

The drama, led by Billy Bob Thornton, has topped the chart two weeks in a row now. This week, the show rode the wave of its finale, which was made available on Jan. 12.

The series has been another feather in the cap of its creator, super writer/director/producer Taylor Sheridan, who has been behind most of the biggest hits on Paramount+, including “Tulsa King” and “Special Ops: Lioness.”

The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

Virgin River is confirmed to return for season 7 and Sweet Magnolias season 4 will be back in February. Both shows are lighter and more grounded, avoiding getting too dark and generally remaining on the optimistic side of the ledger. That won't be the case with the latest romantic saga that Netflix is hoping to adapt.

The second season of the streamer’s international mega-hit “Squid Game” arrived on Dec. 26, officially ending the holiday season with a steady stream of blood and violence, shattering all kinds of viewership records in the process.

The South Korean series was seen in 2.2 million U.S. households in the first four days it was available, according to Samba TV data, a massive debut no matter the time of year.

However, this week’s edition of the Wrap Report looks at the full week following that big debut. While “Squid Game” was 2024’s final big streaming hit, it wasn’t the most-watched streaming program from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5. The page-to-screen adaptations keep on coming to Netflix, and this time, it's another BookTok hit that could become everyone's next Netflix guilty pleasure binge-watch.

On Jan. 9, Variety revealed that Netflix had officially snatched up the rights to Twisted Love, the best-selling romance novel by Ana Huang that has taken TikTok by storm and launched a full series of books. The outlet reports that the streamer secured the rights to Twisted Love and its three sequels for a television series adaptation. The deal for Huang's novels was said to be seven figures.

Apart from the news of Twisted Love being snagged by Netflix for a lucrative deal that would put it into millions of homes worldwide, there isn't any additional information about the in-development series adaptation. No writers or producers seem to currently be attached, and the show hasn't gotten an official green light. But with a seven-figure deal, this seems like a no brainer!

Netflix has picked up the rights to adapt Ana Huang’s romance novel “Twisted Love” and its sequels into a TV series in a seven-figure option deal.

Per the logline for the project, “A steamy new adult series that follows the lives of four best friends and their brooding love interests, riddled with dark secrets from their pasts, as they overcome the obstacles keeping them apart to fall in love.”

If ordered to series, the “Twisted” adaptation would mark the latest in a line of romance book-to-screen titles at Netflix, which has made great success with its “Bridgerton” and “Virgin River” franchises.

The “Twisted” novel series — which began with “Twisted Love,” released in 2021, followed by “Twisted Games,” “Twisted Hate” and “Twisted Lies” — has sold more than 12 million copies to date. The debut book spent 60 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sold translation rights in 34 countries.

By the start of 2025, Carry-On demolished records to become the fifth-most-watched English-language Netflix Original of all time. That data will soon be backed up by Nielsen's streaming charts. But the initial response underlines the holiday-themed thriller struck a nerve with audiences. Harlan Coben's brand-new 2025 Netflix thriller has found itself at the top of the streaming platform's global charts. The American author is one of the most successful mystery-thriller writers in the world, having written more than 30 novels that have collectively sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. 12 of Coben's novels have been adapted for the screen, including The Five, which aired on Sky 1 in the UK, and the one-season hit Shelter, which aired on Prime Video. Coben's stories are known for their mix of interpersonal drama with thriller elements.

Back in 2018, Coben signed a multi-million-dollar, five-year deal with Netflix, under which 14 of his novels would be adapted for the streaming platform across different territories and languages. His debut Netflix show was Michael C. Hall's mystery thriller Safe in May 2018. The psychological thriller series featured the story of a widower father whose daughter goes missing, leading him to discover dark truths.

In its first full week on the streamer, the second season racked up 58.2M views from December 30 to January 5, not only maintaining its position as most-watched title of the week, but soaring to the second most-watched non-English title of all time — behind only Season 1.

Add that to the 68M views it tallied in its first three days and Season 2 is now sitting at 126.2M views in 11 days. That makes it the fourth most-streamed series on the streamer, also behind Wednesday and Stranger Things 4.

At this rate, it would not be surprising to see Season 2 eventually surpass its predecessor as Netflix’s top title of all time. It’s got another 79 days to get 139M additional views in order to take that crown.

Naturally, the season was the most-watched English-language series of the week of Dec. 30 to Jan. 5 — as well as the most Netflix title of the week overall.

Hamilton Daly, who joined the brand in 2021, has departed Hallmark as the network eliminated the position altogether.

“Hallmark is aligning its consumer-facing touch points, including content, under a single leader, chief brand officer Darren Abbott, with a focus and expertise in the expression of the Hallmark brand to consumers — from product to experiences and now content, across multiple platforms,” they said in a Monday statement. “Darren has an innate understanding of the Hallmark brand and paired with his leadership and vision, will ensure our content aligns to the promise of our legacy brand.”

“Lisa is an extremely talented creative leader and we are grateful for her many contributions to Hallmark Media, including expanding our storytelling and characters in new ways,” the statement continued.
