Though the box office slump continues, it looks like the worst is over. The weekend’s 48.5 million overall box office is the fourth worst of the year, but it's around a 13 increase from last weekend’s 42.3 million, which was the year’s second worst weekend and may turn out to be the season’s weakest. This weekend is the first in September to perform better than the same weekend last year, which had an MCU title at the head of the month with little else to follow, and the buzz on Don't Worry Darling suggests that next weekend should see more growth. Of course, these low overall numbers are still bleak (keep in mind no pre-pandemic weekend dropped below 60 million since 2001), and the numbers will remain ugly until Halloween Ends opens in four weekends from now, but after seven of the past ten weekends declining, any improvement is a decent sign.

Despite five new movies getting nationwide releases this weekend, only one had much of an impact in another weekend where very few movies did particularly well.
Oscar winner Viola Davis returned to theaters as Sony’s “The Woman King,” directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Old Guard”). The historic action epic came into the weekend with fantastic reviews following its world premiere at TIFF last week. It made 1.7 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, which was merged into its 6.85 million opening Friday. With a rare “A+” CinemaScore, the movie held up well over it opening weekend to end up with an estimated 19 million. “The Woman King” Is also currently the only movie playing in more than 3,000 theaters.
Last week’s #1 movie, 20th Century’s horror film “Barbarian,” took a small fall to second place with 6.3 million, down just 40 from its opening weekend. It has grossed 20.9 million so far, seemingly avoiding...

The weekend box office has been a bust for the past few weeks, even with the boost of the newly-named National Cinema Day on September 3. This weekend is looking a bit better, thanks mostly to one movie: "The Woman King." Based on a true story, the film stars Viola Davis as a general of the Agojie, an all-female military that protects the West African kingdom of Dahomey.
"The Woman King" was described by /Film's Chris Evangelista as a "rousing historical epic" and has earned mostly positive critical reviews, but unless movies have Tom Cruise hanging off an aircraft in them, people just haven't been willing to spend the last few weeks of decent weather sitting in a theater.
According to Variety, "The Woman King" is going to be the winner this weekend, taking the crown from last week's surprise horror champion, "Barbarian." Though dedicated horror fans are still turning out...

“The Woman King” has found its throne at the box office.
The Sony release is drumming up a projected 18 million opening from 3,765 locations, in line with most analysts’ estimates heading into the weekend. The epic also benefited from landing some premium format auditoriums, such as Imax, lending an additional boost to revenue.
Though that doesn’t necessarily qualify as a grand opening, it’s a solid start for the action film, which carries a 50 million production budget and has no ties to existing franchises. What’s more, it’s more than enough for “The Woman King” to top box office charts on a slow weekend with few rival releases.
Co-financed by eOne, “The Woman King” started to draw great buzz when it made a splashy debut at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. Reviews have been largely glowing since, with the film currently holding a mighty 94 approval rating on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.

We’re still knee deep in the current box office slump, with five weeks left until Halloween Ends carries us out of it. However, after a better than expected 42.3 million overall box office last weekend (a 24 drop) and solid buzz on this weekend’s The Woman King and next weekend’s Don't Worry Darling, it looks like we may be able to weather the storm without hitting a new low overall weekend low for the year (January 28-30’s 34.9 million gross is the number to beat). This would only be a minor consolation, and we may not see a single weekend even get over 60 million until October 14-16, but having a few doubles and triples will tide theaters over until the upcoming season of homeruns and grand slams.
The biggest release this weekend is Sony/TriStar’s The Woman King, which should open in the mid teens from 3,700 theaters (including...

"Doing what I cannot do, Father… This team… is yours." This looks terrible, but at least it's nice to make fun of it. A Faith Based Films company has released a trailer for a sports film called Running the Bases, opening in theaters in September. Let's state the facts: this is religious propaganda designed to corrupt and coerce people into becoming more devout. The story follows a small-town baseball coach who gets the offer to coach a successful high school team, but gets in trouble for mixing religion with coaching. It's an obvious response to the real incident in Texas regarding prayer during games, but the bias here is so strong and so revolting I can smell the stink through the screen. Starring Brett Varvel, Gigi Orsillo, Todd Terry, and Cameron Arnett. As a movie site covering new releases, I think it's important to clearly label this kind of religious...
