Action movies are always going to remain one of the most popular genres in cinema, because there’s no better form of escapism than leaving your brain at the door, sitting back and enjoying two hours of fist fights, car chases, shootouts and explosions. That’s one of the many reasons why Extraction ended up becoming Netflix‘s most popular original ever, but it’s far from the only actioner to gain a huge audience on the world’s biggest streaming service.

For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.

On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. The highlight is probably the entire Jurassic Park trilogy, which has proved popular with Netflix users as the first two entries have been hanging around the top 10 most-watched movies list almost ever since arriving. 80s classic fantasy flick The NeverEnding Story and its sequel were added on the 1st as well,...

Netflix‘s biggest content drops typically come on the very first day of a new month, and August was no different in that regard. Extremely popular flicks like Seabiscuit, Mad Max and Being John Malkovich landed on the 1st, but not every new arrival hits Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched movies list.

Currently, the chart is being populated by some beloved classics – the wildly successful 90s adventure Jurassic Park is sitting comfortably at #2, for instance – and also a few of the usual suspects, but #9 is home to a sometimes overlooked Adam Sandler film that’s guaranteed to get some laughs out of you.

With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.

The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.

On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

Trying to figure out the complexities of the Netflix algorithm is about as likely as divining the future through tea leaves. Often the strangest films become suddenly popular, with obscure stuff from years past rocketing up the charts as people mysteriously tune in in droves. That’s happening right now, too, as Rogue Warfare: The Hunt is the #1 most-watched movie on Netflix today.

Haven’t heard of it? I don’t blame you. The pic currently has no critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (and therefore no score) and has just 15 user ratings, leaving it with a princely 7%.

So, what is Rogue Warfare: The Hunt? Well, it came out in 2019 and appears to be the sequel to Rogue Warfare, which also released in 2019. The IMDb description bills it as:

“The next [story] of the Rogue trilogy; Daniel’s been captured and it’s up to the team to find him before it’s too late.

As we finish up July and head into August, Netflix has a bunch of great new content coming this week. Though Monday doesn’t feature anything fresh, Tuesday through Sunday will deliver a ton of exciting titles, including a lot of classic movies and a bunch of Netflix Originals.

The highlights of what’s to come in the last days of July include Transformers War for Cybertron: Siege season 1, the beginning of a new trilogy exploring the final hours of the civil war that was fought between the Autobots and the Decepticons on their homeworld, and also The Umbrella Academy season 2, in which things are set to get even weirder for the Hargreeves clan.

Now that we’re two thirds of the way through July, we’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s coming to Netflix next month. New titles are being added all the time and while some days remain lacking in content at present, on the whole we know what to expect on the streaming service in August. As always, there’s a huge variety, too, from foreign titles to documentaries to new TV series to much-anticipated Netflix originals.

Some of the more notable additions to the line-up that have been added since it was first announced last week include 2003’s Seabiscuit, the jockey drama starring Tobey Maguire, and the next season of Transformers Rescue Bots Academy, both coming on the first day of the month. We’re only halfway through July, but we already know much of what’s coming to Netflix in August. Obviously, plenty more titles will be announced as the month draws nearer, but there’s still a bunch of highly anticipated movies and TV shows already on the schedule.

Just today, we got our first trailer for one of them – the streaming giant’s new superhero action flick, Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, that’s based around a mysterious pill that imbues whoever takes it with superpowers for a total of five minutes. Saban Films has dropped a new trailer for Mike Gunther action-thriller ‘Rogue Warfare: The Hunt.

The story follows the leader of an elite team of soldiers as he is captured by terrorists, it is up to the team to find and rescue him before it is too late.
