Good news! Netflix wants more money for its films and TV shows, as subscription prices take a notable hike in the US.
You don’t have to think back very far to remember when the monthly subscription cost for a streaming service appeared to be on the economic side. Over the course of the last few years, as streamers have been spending on bigger and bigger productions, inevitably it’s the end customer that has to foot the bill. Sooner or later, it was always going to be so.
Over in the US then, Netflix revealed last week that it will “occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix”. The last time it did this was October 2023, and new pricing will take effect in the US over the coming weeks.
The cost of the ad-supported tier in America is going from $6.99 to $7.99 a month.

Ke Huy Quan, who won an Academy Award for his work in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, has signed with WME for representation in all areas.
The actor was previously with UTA, signing with the agency in mid-2023 after his Oscar win.
Quan was famously a child actor in the 1980s, making his debut opposite Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and appearing in seminal ’80s movie The Goonies. But acting work dried up for him as he got older, and for years he instead worked developing action choreography.
He made a triumphant return in front of the camera with 2022’s Everything Everywhere, which became a surprise and unlikely hit and an even unlikelier Oscars darling. His performance as a husband desperate to connect with his wife earned him an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Critics Choice Award, Independent Spirit Award,...

Ke Huy Quan comes across as a very nice dude, exuding delightful positivity both on and off the screen, but he would love to break bad as a James Bond villain. I’m…into it.
“I would love to play a bad guy. Like a Bond villain,” Quan told Empire. “Or the kind of thing Hugh Grant does in Heretic. I want to go out of my comfort zone and just play this diabolical, really bad guy. That would be a lot of fun.“
While Quan may not be showing off his villain chops just yet, his next project will double down on his mastery of martial arts. The actor will soon be seen in Love Hurts, an action comedy in which he plays a seemingly mild-mannered realtor with a dark secret that he is desperate to leave behind. “I don’t want to be perceived as an action star,...

The Russo Brothers have shared a bit of the behind-the-scenes story behind their return to the MCU with a pair of forthcoming Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars.
In an interview with Empire Magazine published on Monday, filmmaker Anthony Russo, who’s directing the forthcoming films alongside brother Joe, shared that it “took a little time” to begin to think about Avengers: Endgame as anything but the end of their journey with the MCU, after successfully mounting that 2019 title as one of the highest grossing films of all time.
Over the years, he shared, there have been conversations with the team at Marvel — including President Kevin Feige and Co-President Louis D’Esposito — and ideas thrown around for potential new films on which to collaborate. But “really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us,” said Anthony. “You couldn’t see it coming until it came,...

The Russo Bros. recently revealed to Empire Magazine that it was their longtime Marvel screenwriter Stephen McFeely who came up with the idea that lured them back to the MCU after “Avengers: Endgame” to helm the upcoming “Avengers” movies “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” However, McFeely originally turned down the chance to write more Marvel movies with a blunt “fuck no” to Joe and Anthony Russo.
“’Endgame’ was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end,” Anthony Russo said. “Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us. You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

Ke Huy Quan rose to fame playing Short Road in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in Richard Donner’s The Goonies, but the actor’s big-screen career didn’t take off as he had hoped. Quan even quit acting for nearly two decades before he returned to great acclaim with Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film won Quan an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and suddenly everyone wanted a piece of him. Quan’s next project will see him starring in Love Hurts, an action comedy in which he plays a seemingly mild-mannered realtor with a dark secret that he is desperate to leave behind. It wasn’t a choice Quan made lightly, and he even reached out to an old friend for advice.

The Multiverse Saga hasn't been the unmitigated disaster some would have you believe, but it does feel like enlisting the Russo Brothers for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars was part of Marvel Studios' attempt to course correct.
Joe and Anthony were seemingly done with the MCU after Avengers: Endgame. While the duo was set to focus on their Agbo production label, Cherry and The Gray Man struggled to strike a chord with movie fans - The Electric State doesn't look...great - so a Marvel Studios return might be what's best for them as well.
Talking to Empire Online, Anthony said, "Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end. We’re very close with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas.

2025 is set to be a big year for Marvel. After largely taking a year off in 2024 (excepting the casual box office mega-smash that was Deadpool Vs. Wolverine), the MCU is back with three major movies in the coming months: the long-awaited Captain America: Brave New World, misanthropic team-up movie Thunderbolts*, and – at long last – the arrival of Marvel’s first family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And that’s just the beginning. The current Marvel slate all leads up to Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027 – an outing not only bringing the return of Robert Downey Jr., this time as Dr. Doom, but also reuniting Marvel with directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo and screenwriter Steven McFeely. The A-team is back in a big way.
Not that returning to the MCU was an obvious move. “Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think...

While 2025 has begun with mixed reviews for humanity, Netflix is ready to help that get better. Throughout the year, the streaming giant will give us many films we do not want to miss. Below are just four of those.
Not listed is the Millie Bobby Brown vehicle, The Electric State, which is directed by the Russo Brothers. It takes place in an alternative 1990s when man and machine try to find peace. We mentioned Millie Bobby Brown was in it, right? Oh, Chris Pratt is in it, too.
The truth is that no matter what genre you like, you are going to find something to love on Netflix. The streamer has consistently produced excellence. Who are we to doubt it?
Four Netflix movies being released in 2025 that you will not want to missBack in Action (January 17)

The Running Man has cast a Fear the Walking Dead star in a role iconically played by Richard Dawson in the Arnold Schwarzenegger dystopian classic. Directed by Edgar Wright, The Running Man remake will see Glen Powell take on the role of Ben Richards, a participant in a deadly game that sees contestants hunted down around the world, with the survivor getting a massive cash prize. The film also stars Katy O'Brian and Daniel Ezra as contestants, Karl Glusman as a hunter, and Josh Brolin as show producer Dan Killian.
Now, Deadline has confirmed Colman Domingo has been cast as the game show host in The Running Man remake, originally played by Richard Dawson in the 1987 adaptation. The Fear the Walking Dead and Rustin star will be taking on the role, but it's reported Brolin's character will be the primary villain this time around. However, Domingo's casting as...

It’s been decades now since Danny Boyle and Alex Garland first went viral. Back in 2002, the acclaimed filmmaker and then-novelist teamed up on a true horror game-changer – rewriting the foundations of the zombie genre in 28 Days Later, with its fast-running rage-infected (not-actually-zombie) hordes. Now, 18 years on from sequel 28 Weeks Later (made without Boyle and Garland), the original creators are returning with 28 Years Later – the beginning of an epic new era in the apocalyptic flesh-eating saga, with all-new characters, a fresh world to explore, and narratively-ambitious plans spanning three films. The rage has only just begun.
The new issue of Empire takes a world-exclusive deep dive into Boyle and Garland’s explosive horror comeback, getting up close and personal with the filmmakers and stars – including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes – teasing the ways in which the rage-virus has evolved in the intervening 28 years; unveiling the...

Hello hello, and welcome to 2025, which my five-year-old son has boldly proclaimed “the year we’ve been waiting for.” Full disclosure: He also insists that “Elf” is a documentary and that he can see his grandparents’ house from our living room window (they live on the other side of the country), so I would advise against accepting any of his other declarations as the stuff of fact, but — when it comes to the movies of 2025, at least — the little guy might have a good point.

While the strike-impacted 2024 release slate resulted in fewer movies overall, 2025 promises to be something of a return to normal with a bevy of highly anticipated films coming to both theaters and streaming. From two new Marvel movies to James Gunn’s DC reboot of “Superman” to a “Jurassic” reboot to live-action remakes of animated classics galore, there’s plenty of familiar territory, but also noteworthy original films as well – Ryan Coogler’s vampire film “Sinners,” Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story “Presence” and a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie are all on tap, to name a few.
And that’s not to mention the films that don’t have release dates yet but are promised for 2025 – Netflix alone has the third “Knives Out” movie “Wake Up, Dead Man,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and a new Noah Baumbach film.
Oh yeah, and there’s a new “Avatar” sequel coming in December.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the Russo Brothers, have directed some of the biggest movies of all time, with their film Avengers: Endgame coming in second place just behind James Cameron’s Avatar… but that hasn’t made it any easier to get their sci-fi adventure film The Electric State out into the world. The project was first announced back in 2017 and experienced multiple ups, downs, and behind-the-scenes shake-ups on its way to production, with filming beginning in 2022 and wrapping in early 2023. Reshoots followed in 2024. Now The Electric State is finally be ready to make its way out into the world, so we figured it was time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Electric State:

Chris Pratt is set to star in a new Netflix movie, The Electric State, and information regarding the cast, story, and more has been trickling out. The Electric State is directed by MCU veterans the Russo Brothers, marking their tenth feature film together and second original movie for Netflix. The film is based on the 2018 science fiction dystopian graphic novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag, and is set in an alternate version of the 1990s where a robot joins forces with a young woman to find her missing brother.

The $300m Russo brothers Netflix film The Electric State has spent serious money on some things. Wigs very much included.
Across 103 very expensive seconds, Netflix has pulled back the curtain on its most costly movie of all time: The Electric State. With a bill in excess of $300m, before marketing, it’s arguably the last massive gamble of this size the streaming giant will undertake.
In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the new trailer:
Directed by the Russo brothers, before they head back to the relative safety of Avengers movies, the film has an all-star cast, led by Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown. Also on the payroll are Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Norman, with Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci. Exclusive: Sony Pictures has preemptively acquired “H.A.V.E.N.”, a sci-fi short story by Carter Blanchard, who will pen an adaptation for the big screen.
While plot details for the film are under wraps, we’ve heard the short story described as Men in Black meets Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It follows a woman who wakes up in a field with no memory of how she got there and learns that she’s been missing since 1976, yet hasn’t aged a day. She finds herself living in a world she no longer recognizes — all her friends and family, long gone — until learning she had a daughter who went missing with her in 1976, but never came back. A daughter who has been mysteriously erased from her memory.
“H.A.V.E.N.” was recently published by NeoText Corporation, the short form publishing company owned by Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder and Jay Schuninksy. Schoenfelder will produce...

The Electric State looks like the most Netflix movie ever made. It’s a sci-fi action dramedy starring Millie Bobby Brown that reportedly cost over $300 million to produce due to Netflix’s talent buyout compensation structure. You can gaze upon all that money in the new trailer the streaming service released Wednesday, which has 53,000 views after three hours at press time.
The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and The Gray Man. It stars Mbb with long hair and Chris Pratt with a different hairstyle than he’s ever had before. The film is set in a retro-futurist alternate universe 1994 after a robot uprising ended with humans banishing robots to a sort of open-air prison spanning much of the American West. Brown plays Michelle, a teenage girl who teams up with a nice robot and a disillusioned veteran of the robot...

Before Joe and Anthony Russo return to the Marvel family for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, they will unleash The Electric State. Based on the illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag, the film takes place in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s where sentient robots, who once peacefully served among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising.
“The robots in this alternate universe came from Walt Disney and Disneyland — the animatronics that he created gained a sentience, were put into the workforce, and became worker bots, service bots, and marketing bots,” Joe revealed while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. “But they retained that Disney-esque quality to keep them appealing and non-threatening to humans. So you have this tapestry of really interesting, cartoonish-looking robots who are very complex characters in their own right, who are on their own journey of discovery.“

In our world, the 1990s were a time of enormous change: the arrival of the internet, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the first baby boomer president of the United States. Years later, an uneasy peace has settled in — but it may not last for long.

The game is afoot again as Boiling Point director Philip Barantini boards the next installment of Netflix and Legendary’s Enola Holmes franchise. The studios expect Millie Bobby Brown to return for the sleuth-inspired sequel, Enola Holmes 3, but deals have yet to close. If Brown signs on the dotted line, Enola Holmes 3 would become her next feature project after concluding her long-standing role as Eleven on the final season of Stranger Things. In addition to her starring role, Millie Bobby Brown will produce Enola Holmes 3 alongside Bobby Brown through their Pcma Productions.
Based on the YA novel series by Nancy Springer, the first two Enola Holmes movies find a young Enola Holmes following in the footsteps of her older brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). The first film finds Enola unraveling a dangerous conspiracy while searching for her missing mother, while the sequel has Enola looking for a missing girl.
