HBO’s The Franchise may forever alter the way you experience a big-budget, IP-driven movie, by revealing just how silly it can be to film such an overblown spectacle.

How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

American TV bosses obviously didn’t learn many lessons from “Episodes,” the Showtime/BBC co-production which brilliantly skewered the habit of adapting British sitcoms, and removing all nuances, subtleties, and idiosyncrasies in the process. In the 13 years since its premiere, there’s been numerous failed pilots (“Spy”), ratings disasters (“Free Agents”), and entire series considered unfit for public consumption (“Us and Them”) which originated across the pond. Now the most singular UK comedy of the 2010s is going transatlantic.
The BAFTA-nominated “Friday Night Dinner” — which served up 37 episodes from 2011-2020 —stemmed from creator Robert Popper’s real-life secular Jewish family and their weekly Shabbat meals, explaining why everything from its suburban London home to its lovable oddballs feels so wonderfully specific. Disappointingly, Amazon Freevee’s “Dinner with the Parents” is as generic as its title.
The 10-part series on Freevee does attempt to retain some of the original’s quirks.

Addictive Netflix thriller You is finally back. And in Season 4, Charlotte Ritchie gets the unenviable honour of playing the latest obsession of creepy-yet-handsome, ‘I just can’t help falling in love with (and then probably killing) you’ Joe, aka Penn Badgley.
If you’re new to You, it’s the story of bookshop manager Joe Goldberg, who has a pathological tendency to develop dangerous infatuations with women, which usually end in lots of bloodshed and/or a prolonged stay in a plexiglass book vault. Most recently, he’s had a son, whom he was forced to abandon when escaping to a new life across the Atlantic after the nail-biting, catastrophic Series 3 finale.
These days, Joe goes by Professor Jonathan Moore, and is living it up in London town. Charlotte Ritchie’s character is savvy ice-queen and art gallery director Kate, part of a group of wealthy and privileged young Brits Joe gets tangled up with.

Not that long ago, the Disney Channel meant kids’ cartoons and shows about toothy pre-teens with crossover pop careers. Now, Disney+ (Hulu in the US) has a comedy series featuring a character named Jizzlord, and nothing means anything anymore. The term ‘Disney Adult’ may currently describe the kind of person who gets married in a Prince Eric wig on a cruise ship, but if this trend continues, we’re going to need it back.

HBO has ordered a comedy pilot about the making of a superhero movie, Variety has learned.
The half-hour pilot is titled “The Franchise.” It follows a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. If and when they finally make the day, the question they must face — is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant?
According to an individual with knowledge of the project, Sam Mendes came up with the original idea for the show. The pilot story was written by Jon Brown, Keith Akushie and Armando Iannucci, with Brown and Akushie writing the pilot. Brown will also serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Akushie executive producing and writing. Marina Hyde is attached as writer and executive producer. I May Destroy You producer Various Artists Limited has been greenlit for a BBC Two comedy about a hen weekend that goes wrong. Henpocalypse!, from Hullraisers creator Caroline Moran, takes five women who headed out on a weekend of a lifetime to celebrate Zara’s engagement only to be interrupted by the end of the world. They subsequently have to wait it out in an isolated holiday cottage in Wales and, emerging from quarantine into the harsh new post-apocalyptic world, find the male population has almost entirely been wiped out. BBC Head of Comedy Tanya Qureshi described the show as “very funny with an incredible collection of women at the heart of it.” Various Artists was behind Michaela Coel’s smash hit I May Destroy You for the BBC and HBO and has also produced British comedies including Sally4Ever and Dead Pixels.

In series six, Inside No. 9 pulled off a diamond heist, explored obsessive geek fandom, framed a cuckold in an international conspiracy, let a grotesque true crime bleed from reality to fiction and back again, made a deal with the devil, and killed Jesus. Where, one might well ask, next?
Anywhere it wants, is the answer to that question. The BBC Two anthology series can float from location to location, story to story, unhampered by the need to put down roots in any one place. Series seven brings half a dozen brand new films to screen, scored by composer Christian Henson, and each one as different as the last.
The official synopsis describes the new episodes as taking us “from the Welsh valleys to an abandoned house, from kidnappers to detectives, and from a day trip out in a pedalo to a public information film.

Jesse Armstrong had a great year. The “Succession” showrunner saw the third season of his HBO show air to continued acclaim, and it was renewed for a fourth season. And after the success of “I May Destroy You,” Armstrong’s Various Artists Ltd. — which produced the Michaela Coel miniseries — doubled its profits, according to a year-end report filed by the company.
The report, filed by Various Artists earlier this month with the U.K. government, shows the company more than doubled its post-tax profit for the fiscal year ending in March. It reported a profit of £2.6 million, compared to £1.2 million the prior year. The document singles out the success of “I May Destroy You” as a key performance indicator for the company founded in 2017.
“In particular, ‘I May Destroy You’ was one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed television shows in living memory, winning awards including 5 BAFTAs, 3 Rts awards and 2 Emmys.

The profits for the year ending March 2021 are more than double those of the previous year, which amounted to £1.2 million ($1.6 million) according to Various Artist Ltd’s latest financial report, which was filed at the U.K.’s Companies House on Dec. 17.

BBC Studios own a minority stake in the company.
Various Artists Ltd’s year-end financial report credits “I May Destroy You,” which was written by and starred Michaela Coel, as one of the main drivers of the company’s “considerable success to date, relative to the short life of the company.

Like the one before it, 2021 was a year in which many of us saw more of our TVs than of our friends and loved ones. It was lucky then, that there was so bloody much of the stuff, despite the pandemic’s best efforts to shut it all down. They might have been delayed, they might have been curtailed, but they weren’t stopped. Returning British TV shows returned like spring lambs, gambolling over the horizon right into your living room.
There was comedy and drama, as well as crime thrillers by the lorryload, and sci-fi and fantasy coming by the… much smaller lorryload.
A Discovery of Witches Season 2 (January)
Based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy about the forbidden love between a powerful witch and a centuries-old vampire, A Discovery Of Witches debuted on Sky in autumn 2018 (read our reviews here) and was renewed for series two and three almost straight away.

Nothing says how crazy the latest TV season was as a result of Covid than looking at the schedule for The CW finales.
Finales traditionally air in May, leading into a depressing absence of original scripted programming for the summer months.
In 2021, The CW has managed the impossible -- finales for their biggest shows clear through summer.
The CW is making all kinds of progress in 2021. They've added several new shows, and they recently added Saturday night programming to their upcoming schedule.
Mind you, we have no idea what might air on Saturdays, but I expect some of their reality fare to launch the night, such as Penn & Teller: Fool Us or Whose Line Is It Anyway?
.
They're fun programs that you might want to watch in a crowd to keep the good times rolling.
There are several shows returning to The CW this summer.

The CW's summer schedule will feature many returning shows.
The young-skewing network announced a string of premiere dates on Thursday while also delaying a couple of shows.
We'll start with Riverdale.
The teen drama is currently on hiatus but was set to return Wednesday, July 7.
Now, however, the hiatus has been lengthened, meaning the show is now set to return Wednesday, August 11.
No reason was given for the change, but it's possible the network wants to give Kung Fu an uninterrupted run.
The freshman drama starring Olivia Liang has been a huge ratings success for the network.
Another series delayed is In the Dark.
The third season was initially set for June 9, but it will now bow on June 26.
Meanwhile, Stargirl, which is now a CW-exclusive series, will return for its sophomore run Tuesday, August 10, where it will be paired with the final episodes of Superman & Lois Season 1.

Summer schedules are just heating up, so stay tuned for more
Spring only recently arrived, but broadcast TV networks are already looking to the summer, announcing which shows will premiere during what’s traditionally not a peak programming block for NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and The CW.
While it’s not exactly beach-front primetime real estate, plenty of hit shows still air in the warmer months — especially unscripted ones. This summer will see the returns of hit series like NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise,” plus the premieres of new shows like “The Republic of Sarah” on The CW and “Crime Scene Kitchen” on Fox.
See TheWrap’s roundup of broadcast TV’s summer premiere dates — so far — and check back regularly for updates as more are announced by Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC and The CW.

Peep Show, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s long-running Channel 4 comedy about flatmates Mark and Jez, exposed a great comic truth. By letting us eavesdrop on its characters’ inner monologues, it showed us that we’re all idiots on the inside. Petty, vain, furious, paranoid, self-congratulatory yet self-hating at the same time… Just like Mark and Jez, we may pretend to know what we’re doing, but really, we’re all just few inevitable steps away from eating dog meat on a barge.
Series one of E4 gamer flatshare comedy Dead Pixels – created by Jon Brown and executive produced by Bain and Armstrong – was built on a similar truth minus the façade of normality. Its leads were just as entertainingly idiotic as Mark and Jez, but their shared gaming obsession with Mmorpg Kingdom Scrolls stripped them of any fitting-in pretence. Meg and Nicky (Alexa Davies and Will Merrick) were...

If you ever worry that the hours you plough in to open world video games is time wasted, don’t sweat it. Every minute in a fantasy realm has actually been spent enrolled in a complex training simulation preparing you for the banal realities of 21st century life.
The creator of Dead Pixels – a comedy series about Meg and Nicky, two gamers utterly devoted to fictional fantasy Mmorpg Kingdom Scrolls – explains how online games have been stealthily shaping us for the real world through nine simple life lessons.
Lesson 1: Submit to the rules
Games basically train you to be a good functioning member of capitalist society, a good employee. You have to submit yourself to a rigid set of rules, learn what you’re not allowed to do and get on board with that, or you’re not going to get anywhere. Subvert the rules if you want to,...

The premiere week of the 2020-21 TV season was unlike any other.
Due to the massive impact of Covid-19, the week was packed with un-scripted fare, reruns, and broadcast debuts of series which already aired elsewhere.
Amongst the lack of original scripted content, “The Masked Singer” and the NFL emerged as clear winners. The whacky Fox singing competition series delivered a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 after seven days of delayed viewing. While that’s down a good chunk on last season, it still represents the largest non-football program of the week by some distance, and its +0.8 ratings growth was also by far and away the largest. “Sunday Night Football” came overall top with a 5.4.
The top scripted series of the week you ask? Well “The Simpsons” rolled back the clock for Fox, coming in with a 1.9 rating in Live+7, followed by “Family Guy” with a 1.1 and “Bob’s Burgers” with a...
