‘Here Come the Habibs,’ Australian Comedy About Lebanese Family, Gets Mexican Adaptation (Exclusive)

El Estudio has acquired rights to adapt hit Australian comedy format “Here Come the Habibs” for Mexican audiences, partnering with Los Angeles-based Happy Accidents on the project.
The original series, which aired on Australia’s Channel 9, broke ground as the first mainstream commercial TV comedy to feature a Middle Eastern family in leading roles. The fish-out-of-water comedy follows a Lebanese family who strike it rich through a lottery win and move into an upscale neighborhood, creating a culture clash with their more buttoned-up neighbors.
The format comes from Jungle Entertainment, the Australian production powerhouse behind “Population 11” (Stan), “Wakefield” (ABC), “No Activity” (adapted in over eight territories) and “Mr Inbetween” (FX).
Set to be reimagined in Mexico City, the adaptation aims to explore themes of class mobility, cultural identity and social integration through a distinctly Mexican lens.

Commenters under Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar trailer seem to think the teaser gives off real Inventing Anna vibes. Both shows focus on women who draw unsuspecting victims into their web of lies. In Apple Cider Vinegar, the liar at the series’ heart is an Australian influencer who lures followers in with claims she’s found a new way to battle cancer.
“Set at the birth of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down.”

Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.
It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.
Here are some of the best Australian TV series currently available to stream in the UK and US. We’ll update this selection as new series arrive.

Chances are Scott Caan has, at one point, been in your watch queue — especially considering he spent 10 years on Hawaii Five-0. But what’s the star of the new Fox drama, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, himself watching these days? TV Insider took the opportunity to ask him when he stopped by to preview his new show, which, while it is a procedural, he said “didn’t read as” one when he read it. “I know I’ve been tricked,” he laughed. “It was really about the characters. It was really about this relationship between Dania [Ramirez] and my characters and our missing son and her new fiancé and the people that she works with.” And so it’s fitting that the shows he’s watching are also character-driven: The White Lotus, Mr Inbetween, and The Bear (which he has in common with 9-1-1‘s Oliver Stark). “I’m a...

Details of his role are being kept under wraps, but we understand he will essentially play the villain of the piece, which is a tentpole of Disney+’s Australia and New Zealand 2022/23 slate and was unveiled in Sydney last month.
Last Days of the Space Age is an eight-part dramedy series set in 1979 Perth in Western Australia, as a power strike threatens to plunge the region into darkness, while the city hosts the iconic Miss Universe pageant and the US space station Skylab crashes just beyond the city’s suburbs. Against this backdrop, three families in a tight-knit coastal community find their marriages, friendships and futures put to the test.

Since 2002, when FX began creating its own original programming, the cable channel has made an effort to produce unique, well-written programming. It began with The Shield and followed up with both Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me. Since then, Fox's channel, like HBO, has drawn many viewers in with innovative series themes, as with Pose, Mr. Inbetween, and Y: The Last Man.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...
