El Estudio has acquired rights to adapt hit Australian comedy format “Here Come the Habibs” for Mexican audiences, partnering with Los Angeles-based Happy Accidents on the project.

The original series, which aired on Australia’s Channel 9, broke ground as the first mainstream commercial TV comedy to feature a Middle Eastern family in leading roles. The fish-out-of-water comedy follows a Lebanese family who strike it rich through a lottery win and move into an upscale neighborhood, creating a culture clash with their more buttoned-up neighbors.

The format comes from Jungle Entertainment, the Australian production powerhouse behind “Population 11” (Stan), “Wakefield” (ABC), “No Activity” (adapted in over eight territories) and “Mr Inbetween” (FX).

Set to be reimagined in Mexico City, the adaptation aims to explore themes of class mobility, cultural identity and social integration through a distinctly Mexican lens.

The streamer is revealing a sneak peek Tuesday of its forthcoming Australian limited series Apple Cider Vinegar, a playfully fictionalized take on the story of Belle Gibson, the Australian single mother who launched a wellness empire by convincing the world she had brain cancer but was successfully curing herself with an all-natural lifestyle.

“This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down,” Netflix’s official summary reads.

As previously reported, Paramount+ will premiere all eight episodes of Colin From Accounts Season 2 on Thursday, Sept. 26. The U.S. release date comes six weeks after the second season finale premiered in the Land Down Under.

PaleyFest NY is lining up shows for this year’s event, starting with panels devoted to the 10th anniversary of Starz’s “Outlander,” one for HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere” and another for AMC’s “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol.”

The festival will run from Oct. 16 to Oct. 22 in midtown Manhattan and feature screenings and conversations with the casts and creative teams of the season’s most-anticipated television.

Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.

It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.

Exclusive: Australian actor Sam Delich, who is currently appearing in Netflix’s Joseph Kosinski feature Spiderhead, has landed a major recurring role on Disney+’s comedy-drama series Last Days of the Space Age.

The American Film Institute (AFI) has declared Julia Corcoran the 2022 recipient of the Screen Australia-aaa-Onbass Fellowship, the full tuition scholarship to the AFI Conservatory.

Corcoran is an emerging film and television producer from Sydney, Australia, and will enter the Master of Fine Arts producing programme at AFI in autumn as part of the class of 2024.

She graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney, in communications (media arts and productions) in 2015. She has worked in-house at Sydney-based production company Jungle Entertainment and freelanced in varying producing capacities on titles including Mr Inbetween, Judy & Punch.

Since 2002, when FX began creating its own original programming, the cable channel has made an effort to produce unique, well-written programming. It began with The Shield and followed up with both Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me. Since then, Fox's channel, like HBO, has drawn many viewers in with innovative series themes, as with Pose, Mr. Inbetween, and Y: The Last Man.

Many of their shows have won both critical and popular acclaim. They even made TV history when Pose's Mj Rodriguez became the first transgender woman nominated for a lead acting Emmy. So, with all the channel's success, Ranker asked its voters to decide which of the original FX series were the best.

Sam Neill will make a welcome return to Australian TV drama in Foxtel’s The Twelve, which begins production next week.

He will be joined by Marta Dusseldorp, Kate Mulvany, Brooke Satchwell, and Hazem Shammas in the 10-part series, with the lead cast unveiled in Sydney today.

Adapted from the Belgian crime series of the same name, The Twelve tells the story of 12 jurors – ordinary Australians with struggles of their own – who are tasked with deciding the case of a woman (Mulvany) accused of killing a child.

Neill will play a Colby Sc, a lawyer involved in the case, while Satchwell and Hazem Shammas form part of the jury.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Neill said there were a “number of reasons” behind his involvement in the project.

Nominations for this year’s Australian Directors’ Guild (Adg) Awards are shared amongst the likes of Wayne Blair, Shannon Murphy, Daniel Nettheim, Tennika Smith, and Jonathan Brough, who have all scored two nods each.

Murphy is one of two women included in the category for Best Direction in a Feature Film for Babyteeth, joining Unjoo Moon (I Am Woman) in a field that also includes Seth Larney (2067), Maziar Lahooti (Below), and Robert Connolly (The Dry).

She also gets the nod for Best Direction in a TV or SVOD Drama Series episode for Killing Eve, where she will compete against fellow double nominee Nettheim, who features for Halifax: Retribution (Series 1 Episode 7), and is also up for Best Direction in a TV or SVOD Miniseries Episode for Line of Duty (Series 6 Episode 1).

Aacta has revealed those in contention for the major film, television and short-form prizes at this year’s awards, with High Ground leading the charge in the film categories and The Newsreader ahead in television.

The nominations follow those revealed for feature documentary in July, with the technical craft categories still to come.

Aacta also announced today that this year’s awards will move from The Star to the Sydney Opera House, with the ceremony to be held December 8.

There has also been a change in broadcast partners from Seven to 10, where the ceremony will air first followed by an encore on Fox Arena on Foxtel, Binge, and Aacta TV.

High Ground has earned eight nominations, including Best Film. Also nominated for the night’s major prize are Nitram, which earned seven nods, The Dry, which has six, as well as The Furnace, Penguin Bloom and Rams.

Yet another Jungle Entertainment series is headed Stateside – this time drama Wakefield, with Showtime snapping up the US rights.

It’s the second Australian acquisition by the ViacomCBS-owned premium network of late, having also picked up See-Saw Films’ The End last September.

Created by Kristen Dunphy and originally commissioned by the ABC, Wakefield explores the fine line between sanity and madness through the perspectives of staff and patients at a psychiatric facility.

The cast is lead by Brit Rudi Dharmalingham, a gifted nurse, who is the sanest person in what is a pretty crazy place. But when a song gets stuck in his head, a dark secret from his past begins to intrude into his present.

The ensemble also includes Mandy McElhinney, Geraldine Hakewill, Harriet Dyer, Ryan Corr, Sam Simmons and Felicity Ward.

Showtime has headed down under for its latest drama series acquisition.

The ViacomCBS premium cabler has picked up Wakefield, an Australian series starring The Split’s Rudi Dharmalingam and set an October 18 premiere date.

The eight-episode series, which debuted on Australian public broadcaster ABC in April, is a psychological drama that shines a comedic light on what happens when the sanest individual working in a psych ward begins to lose his grip. It is inspired by creator Kristen Dunphy’s personal experiences.

Dharmalingam plays Nik Katira, who after years working as psych nurse at Wakefield, is exceptionally good at his job. Sam Neill, Christoph Waltz and Patrick Gibson will head the cast of “The Portable Door,” a fantasy adventure film adapted from the series of novels by Patrick Holt.

The film is now shooting in Queensland, Australia, with Jeffrey Walker directing from a script by Leon Ford (“Griff the Invisible”).

The story sees two lowly, put-upon interns at a mysterious London firm, J.W. Wells & Co., become steadily aware that their employers are anything but conventional. The charismatic villains who run the company are disrupting the world of magic by bringing modern corporate strategy to ancient magical practices.

The film is a Jim Henson Company and Story Bridge Films production and is produced by Blanca Lista from Henson and Todd Fellman from Story Bridge.

Sales agent Arclight Films is handling worldwide rights for all territories outside of North America, Australia and New Zealand. Sky will release the film as a Sky Original in the U.

Sam Worthington and Phoebe Tonkin are starring in Matt Nable’s directorial debut, Transfusion. The thriller, which also features Nable, is about a former Special Forces operative thrust into the criminal underworld to keep his only son from being taken from him. Production began in Sydney earlier this week and Altitude has added it to its slate with international sales launching at the Cannes Market.

Transfusion is produced by John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz through Deeper Water Films, with executive producers Cailah Scobie from Stan, Paul Wiegard from Madman Entertainment and Will Clarke, Andy Mayson and Mike Runagall of Altitude Media.

The Stan Original Film will premiere on Stan in Australia in 2022 after a theatrical release through Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.

Nable is also a writer and actor who recently appeared in Oz hit The Dry. Other acting credits include Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge and FX series Mr Inbetween.

Production in and around Sydney, Australia has started on “Preppers,” a comedy series about the end of the world.

Directed by Steven McGregor (“Black Comedy”), “Preppers” follows a young Aboriginal woman whose world crumbles around her after experiencing a personal, cataclysmic event. Escaping the fallout, she finds herself at the center of a mismatched community of doomsday preppers.

“Preppers” stars Nakkiah Lui who also co-wrote the series with Gabriel Dowrick.

Castlevania is coming to an end at Netflix: The anime series will conclude with the upcoming fourth season, premiering Thursday, May 13, the streamer announced on Friday. However, our sister site Deadline reports that Netflix is eyeing a new series set in the same universe, featuring a new cast of characters.

Inspired by the classic video game, Castlevania is described as “a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself.”
