If theaters were told they needed to close one weekend a year, Super Bowl Sunday would be a strong contender. Normally it’s the worst grossing, or very close; studios avoid the date and often the weekends around it. While box-office performance has been weak for nearly a year, this one is worse than usual: The total is around $7.4 million for the top 10, and $8.5 million overall from approximately 2,500 open theaters in North America.
One likely reason is the proliferation of parallel home viewing. Seven of the titles, and nine of the top 12, are available on non-theater platforms.. The parallel 2020 calendar weekend grossed $156 million; the Super Bowl was the previous weekend, and took in $81 million. Even from that more apt comparison, ticket sales are down about 90 percent.
It didn’t help that “The Little Things,” repeating as #1, was down 55 percent. It faced a lack of audience enthusiasm (it had a weak...

Sunday Am Final: On one of the most difficult box office dates on the calendar, Super Bowl weekend, and also during a pandemic, Warner Bros.’ second weekend of its Denzel Washington-Rami Malek-Jared Leto thriller The Little Things made $2.1M at 2,206 theaters, -55% from its first weekend. That puts the pic’s running domestic total through ten days at $7.8M. As would be typical during any Super Bowl Sunday, don’t count on a lot of business today, especially for an R-rated movie aimed at older men.
Little Things’ second weekend drop is a bit more steep than the second weekend of Open Road’s Liam Neeson movies The Honest Thief (-43%) and The Marksman (-35%); in regards to the latter, that movie was coming off of MLK weekend. However, on a dollar basis, Little Things’ second weekend is in line with what those movies did in their second go-rounds,...

Sunday Am Final: If you’re looking for any exciting financial action to come out of the movie business, it’s not at the box office, but rather the stock exchange, especially in last week’s boom for No. 1 exhibitor AMC.
The continued closure of movie theaters during Covid-19, with only 45% of all 5.8K US and Canada movie theaters opened, yielded Warner Bros. Denzel Washington-Rami Malek thriller The Little Things this past weekend, which only opened to $4.8M at 2,171 theaters, the best for an R-rated movie and older guy fare during the pandemic. Worldwide, The Little Things made $7.6M, with money from 20 markets, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and United Artists Emirates.
However, even though there’s not a lot of people coming through movie theaters, including No. 1 chain AMC, that exhibitor capped off a wild week, seeing its market cap mushroom to $4.5 billion and its closing stock price...

“Morbius,” a Marvel movie starring Jared Leto as a biochemist who becomes a vampire, has seen its release date pushed back two times due to the coronavirus. As Sony Pictures is waiting for movie theaters to open again, the comic book film now has a release date set for January 2022.
In an interview for Variety’s Actor on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios, Leto talks about playing Morbius, the “Spider-Man” foe, which Sony hopes will score at the box office in the same way 2018’s “Venom” did.
“It’s a big, fun movie filled with action,” Leto says. “It’s a brilliant doctor, a researcher, who starts off trying to find a cure for a very rare disease that he has and about 1,000 other people in the world have. I was interested in this role because he goes on this journey from dying to finding a cure for this disease and becoming incredibly healthy,...

The box office is in a fallow period, but Liam Neeson prevails. He opened two films at #1 over the last four months; a few weeks ago, a decade-old Neeson title topped Netflix’s movie chart. Not bad for a 68-year-old actor who was Oscar nominated for “Schindler’s List” but is now one-man action/thriller brand.
“The Marksman” knocked “Wonder Woman 1984” from the top spot; the DC title spent three weeks there while also showing on HBO Max. Directed by longtime Clint Eastwood producer Robert Lorenz, “The Marksman” stars Neeson as an Arizona rancher who becomes the unlikely defender of a Mexican boy pursued by cartel assassins. It ticks all the boxes for the Neeson brand: a lone wolf-turned-vigilante in pursuit of justice.
Neeson opened “Honest Thief” in October with $4.1 million on its way to $14 million in theaters. “The Marksman” opened to just over $3.2 million. With fewer theaters available, its...

Sunday Final Am: In a continuing pandemic marketplace such as this, with 57% of all movie theaters still closed, whether you’re a distributor or an exhibitor, you have to be thankful for any amount of money you can get your hands on. Open Road has released the second Liam Neeson movie during the pandemic, The Marksman, over the MLK 4-day holiday, and it’s opening to $3.7M. It’s the third Neeson movie to hit No. 1 for Open Road after October’s Honest Thief and their first wide entry ever, The Grey.

WarnerMedia will be closing its Hong Kong theatrical office, with films from Warner Bros to be released by Universal Pictures in the market beginning January 1, Deadline has confirmed. Layoffs are expected in Hong Kong, though an exact number is not yet clear.
A typically solid market, Hong Kong’s cinemas shuttered for the third time in early December, amid a fourth wave of rising coronavirus cases. Earlier this week, the government extended social distancing measures until at least January 6, 2021, which includes the continued closure of movie theaters.
Warner Bros’ Tenet did $7.1 million in the market after releasing September 10. Wonder Woman 1984 had originally been scheduled for release there on December 17, but was forced off the date due to the ongoing closures. It is understood to now be awaiting an update on movie theater reopenings for WW84. Agency will engage with Warner Bros on film-by-film basis until clients’ needs are met.
Endeavor executive chairman Patrick Whitesell has entered the fray over the controversial Warner Bros / HBO Max distribution strategy, claiming it will “torpedo the traditional waterfall of economics that make movies profitable in the near and long-term for the studio and for our clients”.
Writing to staff on Friday (December 11), Whitesell addressed the recently announced policy whereby each film from Warner Bros’ 2021 slate will debut on HBO Max for one month on the same day it opens in US cinemas.

Patrick Whitesell, executive chairman of WME parent company Endeavor, has blasted WarnerMedia’s stunning plan to stream all 17 of its 2021 Warner Bros. theatrical releases on HBO Max at the same time as they play in theaters.
“Warner Bros. announced a strategy across an entire slate of 2021 movies without consulting with their partners (our clients), not only disregarding our clients’ feelings about the strategy but in many cases constituting a contractual violation,” Whitesell said in a note released Friday. “This is a blatant attempt to self-deal and use our clients work to build their HBO Max streaming service, which our clients have no financial interest in.”

Endeavor executive chairman Patrick Whitesell says in a note to staff that the agency is rejecting Warner Bros.’ approach to releasing its entire 2021 slate on HBO Max the same day as in theaters.
The talent agency is meeting with the studio Friday to additionally negotiate “a solution that protects the creative and economic interests of our clients.”
“As I made clear to the Motion Picture group last week and will reiterate now: WME rejects their unilateral decision out of hand,” Whitesell said, adding that they were “disappointed” with the decision but also says that the studio is disregarding the feelings of WME’s clients, if not violating contracts. “This is a blatant attempt to self-deal and use our clients work to build their HBO Max streaming service, which our clients have no financial interest in.”

Lewis Pullman, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, and Isabel Arraiza have all been cast in the series, Variety has learned. They join previously announced cast members Josh Brolin, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Tom Pelphrey, and Imogen Poots.
“Outer Range” centers on Royal Abbott (Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness.
Pullman is set to take on the role of Rhett Abbott, the family’s younger, more rebellious son. He never thought much past his ambition to become a championship bull rider — until a shocking event, and a girl just returned to town, push him to reconsider everything he thought he knew.

Warner Bros has just dated John Lee Hancock’s cop thriller The Little Things for a January 29, 2021 release. The distributor already had the date reserved with an untitled film. The movie, which starts Denzel Washington and Rami Malek, is now going up against Paramount’s animated monster-wrestling movie Rumble on that date.
The pic, written by Hancock, centers around Deke (Washington), a burnt-out Kern County, CA deputy sheriff who teams with Baxter (Malek), a crack Lasd detective, to nab a serial killer. Deke’s nose for the “little things” proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past.
Jared Leto and Natalie Morales also star. Hancock and Mark Johnson produce, while Mike Drake is executive producer.

Overall on-location filming in Los Angeles dropped 5% from October through December, according to a report released by permitting agency FilmLA on Friday.
Officials said the decline in overall shoot days to 9,839 was due partly to record activity levels in 2018, which generated the highest level of local production activity of any quarter in 25 years, with 10,359 shoot days.
Most of the decline came from commercials and other categories outside features and television. Fourth-quarter TV activity edged down 34 days to 3,761, and feature films declined by 26 days to 1,052.
TV comedy production jumped 39.4% to 548 days, web-based TV increased 36% to 423 shoot days, and pilot production surged 33.3% to 64 days. TV drama production declined 9.7% to 1,345 days due to fewer shows and fewer production days for recurring shows, as several major recurring series such as “Ballers,” “Legion,” “Strange Angel” and “The Affair” ended production over the past two quarters. TV reality production declined 4.4% to 1,006 days.

Officials said the decline in overall shoot days to 9,839 was due partly to record activity levels in 2018, which generated the highest level of local production activity of any quarter in 25 years, with 10,359 shoot days.

Netflix has unveiled its most popular titles internationally with true-crime doc The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann topping the UK list and Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston comedy Murder Mystery leading in Australia.
In India, Bollywood romantic drama Kabir Singh was the most popular release, while the second season of gritty Indian crime drama, Sacred Games, topped the series list. There are also lists for France and Germany (below).
The streamer hasn’t officially revealed the methodology, but the list is thought to have been based on the number of accounts in each country that have watched at least two minutes of a title during its first 28 days on Netflix this year. For series, only the most popular season is counted and for shows and movies that have been released recently, the rankings are based on 28-day projections derived from the initial sampling.

It’s true: Younger actresses always get the good parts.
Such was the case earlier this year, when A Million Little Things was looking to cast the role of Chloe. Viewers had been told that the character was engaged to Jason Ritter’s Eric but had died in the same accident that left him in need of a heart transplant. Chloe owned a music shop on Beacon Hill in Boston; Eric has been running the business since her death.

Hey, "Station 19" fans. We've got some super terrific news for you guys in this article. We can officially tell you that ABC did indeed renew you favorite show for a brand new season 3. That's right, guys. You can crack open those champagne bottle right now and celebrate. Before you do though, we've recently learned there's one, small caveat. It turns out that season 3 will not be debuting until the midseason. So, it's probably not going premiere until early 2020. Apparently, Station 19 lost it's current showrunner and creator Stacy McKee to another job opportunity. So, Grey's Anatomy's current showrunner Krista Vernoff has been hired to step in to take Stacy's place. We're not sure this is the absolute reason why season 3 is being pushed back to a midseason premiere, but it could be one of the reasons. According to the folks over at Popculture.com, ABC is going to...

Rami Malek is currently in negotiations to star in the upcoming cop thriller entitled Little Things, alongside Denzel Washington. John Lee Hancock, known for writing and directing The Blind Side, will be directing from the script he wrote for the film.
Washington is set to play a seasoned deputy sheriff, and if Malek is cast, he will play “a sharp young detective who teams with a seen-it-all deputy sheriff on the hunt for a serial killer. The sheriff has a nose for the ‘little things’ that are helpful in putting clues together, but he’s got baggage and a willingness to cut corners that bristles with his younger partners.”
Sounds very similar to Training Day! But that’s not a bad thing. I would love to see Malek in this type of role. It seems like he can pretty much play any part, and we haven’t really seen him do something like this.

Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek is in early talks to co-star with actor-filmmaker Denzel Washington in the crime thriller Little Things.
The Blind Side?and The Highwaymen director John Lee Hancock is on board to write and direct the movie, reports variety.com.
The story follows a burned-out Kern County deputy sheriff named Deke, played by Washington, who teams with a crack Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Lasd) detective (supposedly played by Malek), Baxter, to reel in a wily serial killer.
Deke's nose for the Little Things proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past.
The plan is for the film to shoot this fall after Malek finishes production on Bond?25, which is currently filming.

"Studio," the 27-year-old captioned the shots. He would also post a song he was listening to on Instagram Stories. The track was Dma's "Lay Down" from the album Hills End. As you likely could have guessed, fans were more than excited to see the singer back in the studio. And while details about what he...

The first five episodes produced by Dice media two years ago won hearts instantly with their realistic and refreshing take on love blooming between two youngsters over little things in the big city of Mumbai.
