Many viewers experienced frustration with the quality of Monday’s key episode.

That changed on Monday night, when many WWE fans reported their streams of “Raw” were choppy, skipped continuously, or were simply unwatchable.
Key Details: Monday’s “Raw” episode was the first following Saturday’s “Royal Rumble” event. Fans took to social media to express their frustration with the stream. The Academy Awards have staged some iconic showdowns. Think of the tension around “La La Land” versus “Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave” versus “Gravity” or “The Godfather” versus “Cabaret.” Each was a nail-biter that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what happens when six films — “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” — are all serious contenders for Hollywood’s most coveted prize? Enter “The Year Without the Frontrunner,” as Variety aptly dubbed it.
So, what is the pathway for each contender?
With 13 nominations, “Emilia Pérez” seems to have the logical edge (although recent controversies could derail that assertion). It has key guild nods and below-the-line Oscar mentions. But in this unpredictable year, historical trends are no guarantee. Major upcoming ceremonies like DGA, PGA and SAG may clarify the race — or make it even messier.

The book series about growing up in the American West was first turned into an enduringly popular TV show in the 1970s.
Netflix recently released an incredibly brutal look at life in the American West of the 19th century in “American Primeval.” The streamer is returning to a similar setting and timeframe, with its new series, though the content will almost certainly be less violent and adult in nature. Netflix announced on Wednesday that it was rebooting “Little House on the Prairie,” the 1974 TV show based on the book series of the same name by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A new study suggests that revenue per user on Netflix’s advertising tier will continue to be outpaced by its ad-free plans.
The journey into ad-supported streaming is a marathon, not a sprint for Netflix. The streaming service, which recently announced that it has crossed the of 300 million global customers threshold, is still not seeing explosive growth from its ad-supported “Standard with Ads” plan, first introduced in late 2022. Global advertising revenue is on the rise for Netflix, but new data from Bernstein Research shows that the streamer’s average revenue per member (Arm) on its ad plan will continue to lag behind that of its ad-free tier.

The 2025 Academy Awards race is certainly one of the most contentious and unpredictable in recent memory. While in previous years a frontrunner like “Oppenheimer” or “Everything Everywhere All At Once” announced itself as the clear favorite early on in the award cycle, there is no indication as to what will pull ahead before the ceremony in March. While occasionally there is a firm horse race between two films, such as “The Power of the Dog” and “Coda,” or “Green Book” and “Roma,” there are multiple films this cycle that could end up taking home the top prize.
As with every year, the Academy Awards nominate a variety of films that reflect the state of the industry, some of which are better than others. There are also a great number of niche films that sadly were ignored by the Oscars entirely, such as “I Saw The TV Glow,” “Ghostlight,” “All We Imagine As Light,...

The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.

The international trend begun by “Parasite” in 2020 continues. On Oscar nominations morning, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) was expected to lead the nominations, and did not disappoint, with a record 13 chances to win an Oscar on March 2.
Almost 10,000 Academy voters are invited to cast their ballots from February 11 – 18, and some twenty per cent of those voters live overseas. Both France’s Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez” and Brazil’s Portuguese “I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics) landed in Best Picture and scored at least one acting nod, along with the expected Best International Feature Film.

In case anyone needed a reminder that “Film Twitter” and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are not populated by the same people, Emilia Pérez, the polarizing French-directed, Spanish-language musical about a trans Mexican gangster, landed a field-leading 13 Oscar nominations on Thursday morning. That tally — encompassing noms for best picture, director, actress, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, international feature, cinematography, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, sound and two for original song — smashed the record for a non-English-language film (previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which had 10 each) and is just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).

Emilia Pérez leads the 2025 Oscar nominations, which were revealed Thursday morning.
The film scored 13 noms, setting a record for a non-English-language film. That surpasses the previous record holders, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each earned 10.
Following Emilia Pérez were The Brutalist and Wicked, which tied with 10 noms apiece. A Complete Unknown and Conclave followed with eight mentions each.
All five of those films will compete for best picture with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys and The Substance. Coralie Fargeat, who directed the latter film, was the only female to be nominated in the best directing category, and also scored a writing nom, while star Demi Moore landed the first Oscar nom of her career, as did Isabella Rossellini for Conclave.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish-born star of Emilia Pérez, was nominated for best actress, making her the first openly transgender performer to be so honored.

And it has come down to this.
After months of hype, campaigning, predictions, and pivots, the 2025 Oscar nominations arrived Thursday to provide clarity in a muddled awards season.
Leading the way: Emilia Pérez (13 nominations), The Brutalist (10), Wicked (10), A Complete Unknown (eight), and Conclave (eight). Those films will compete with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance.
With its 13 nominations — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) — Emilia Pérez set a record for an international film, eclipsing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each had 10. The Spanish-language, Mexico-set French-imported musical’s tally matched last year’s leader, Oppenheimer, which went on to win Best Picture.

But without an Oppenheimer-esque juggernaut dominating the precursor awards, it’s expected to be a tight race with formidable competition.

All five Academy Award nominees for Best Director on Thursday — Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Sean Baker for Anora, Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance — are first-timers in the category.

The company has dipped much more than a toe into live sports streaming, but co-ceo Ted Sarandos still wants to move forward cautiously.
After years of reluctance to even consider live sports deals, Netflix evolved its thinking on the subject substantially in 2024. The year started with a 10-year agreement to stream “WWE Raw” each week beginning in 2025, and continued with a deal to stream NFL games live on Christmas Day. To end the year, Netflix wrapped up a deal to stream the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups in the United States, and that string of successes might lead one to think that the service is all in on major sports deals going forward. But company co-ceo Ted Sarandos pumped the breaks on that line of thinking on Tuesday, while discussing Netflix’s sports future during its conference call to analyze its fourth quarter 2024 earnings.

Throughout 2024, streaming customers watched with horror as service after service announced new price increases. All kept one eye fixed on Netflix, which held off on price hikes throughout 2024. That reprieve has ended, however; when Netflix announced its fourth quarter 2024 earnings on Tuesday, it also dropped the news that it was raising subscription prices on all three of its available plans in the United States. Final Oscar Predictions: Could ‘Emilia Pérez’ Make History and Will the Directors Branch Snub Women?
In the year without a frontrunner, the doors are still wide open. I’m predicting three films will tie for the most nominations with 10 each: “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked.”
Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Pérez” is poised to dominate, and if it can tack on a tech nom or two, the Netflix film could become the most nominated non-English-language film in history, surpassing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) and “Roma” (2018). The streamer’s primary awards pony could potentially go even further. On an ideal nomination day, if it lands nods in all of its “on the bubble” categories — such as cinematography, sound, and two extra bids for supporting actress (Selena Gomez) and original song — it could secure 14 nominations, tying with “All About Eve” (1950), “Titanic” (1997), and “La La Land” (2016) as the most-nominated films of all time. Notably, “La La Land,” also a musical, is the only one to lose the best picture.

Horror in 2024 proved that the genre thrives on reinvention, delivering a lineup as daring as it was unsettling. While the year saw its share of sequels and prequels, what stood out were films that reimagined old tropes with fresh perspectives. From slashers infused with arthouse aesthetics to nuns with evil pregnancies, horror expanded its boundaries. Themes of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom resonated strongly, reflecting societal anxieties in the wake of seismic legal changes, while other films boldly tackled aliens, vampires, fanatics, and class disparity. The year wasn’t without its disappointments, but when horror soared, it truly transcended. Cinephiles flocked to both indie gems and boundary-pushing studio fare, underscoring a collective appetite for narratives that terrify and provoke. So let us take a look at the ten standout English-language horror movies of 2024—movies that not only chilled us to the bone but also made us think.

A new report dives into the trends that differentiate streamers by how they choose to watch their favorite titles.
Netflix’s semi-annual data dumps focusing on what the company’s customers are watching give a fascinating look into what audiences are watching most on the streamer. But there are still plenty of details left out of those spreadsheets, including a breakdown of who is watching content on which devices. New findings from Datos attempts to solve that dilemma, by breaking down how viewers are watching different content segments on Netflix, and whether they prefer to stream using the service’s apps, or on Web devices like laptops and desktops.
Key Details: App users tend to watch more children’s content and cartoons than the web. Users on both were most likely to watch Netflix in the evening. “Young Sheldon” was the top title among app users, while “Wednesday” scored highest among Web watchers.

Today, Emilia Perez is in the Oscar running for Best International Feature, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Sound, and Best Original Song. The film stars Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, and Selena Gomez in its latest film, making a run for Academy Award nominations.
Netflix has produced a record of Oscar-nominated films, including Mank (2021), The Power of the Dog (2020), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020), and My Octopus Teacher (2020). In the time period for Netflix original films that have been produced, surrealism and star power have been the contribution.

The streamer says it doubled the average audience size of ‘Raw’ as compared to its 2024 ratings.
There’s a definite theme emerging around Netflix and its live sporting events. From the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight to its Christmas Day NFL streams, Netflix is consistently delivering strong viewership metrics. That’s not necessarily a surprise for a streaming service that has more than 282 million customers around the world, but it’s encouraging for a service that is still finding its footing when it comes to live events. The pattern of success is continuing with Netflix’s first attempt at live streaming an episode of “WWE Raw,” as its recently-released ratings data demonstrates.
Key Details: Netflix drew 4.9 million Live+1 views to Monday’s episode of “WWE Raw” globally. In the U.S., 2.6 million households watched, which is more than double the ratings “Raw” drew on linear TV. Netflix owns the...

“The Brutalist” and “Emilia Pérez” triumphed, “Shōgun” and “Hacks” had big nights, and Nikki Glaser reminded viewers what it’s like to have a host who’s actually funny in the most memorable Golden Globes ceremony since the awards show nearly atomized a few years ago. It was a broadcast notably light on politics (Glaser did have a funny bit about Hollywood’s lack of pull in the last election) and heavy on pleas for studios and suits to respect artists and bet on risky projects. Best of all, there were plenty of surprises — such as Fernanda Torres’ win for “I’m Still Here” over icons like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman, and Sebastian Stan’s victory for the little-seen indie “A Different Man” — that could reorder the Oscar race.

Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards jolted the Oscars race at the right time. The next seven days are the most important of the season so far, with the four most prominent industry guilds — the Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild — set to announce their nominations for the best of 2024 before the Critics Choice Awards add another data point to the ledger en route to the Oscar nominations on Jan. 17.
The 2025 Golden Globes winners included Emila Pérez (four awards, including Best Comedy/Musical) and The Brutalist, and acting winners Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, Sebastian Stan, Adrien Brody, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin.
Below are three big Globes headlines that will impact the Oscars race.
Demi Moore might be the Best Actress frontrunner.
Heading into the night, Anora star Mikey Madison was heavily favored to win at the Golden Globes and then carry through all the way to the Oscars stage in March.

In a year where clear frontrunners have been slow to emerge, the Golden Globes offered crucial hints about which films and performances might emerge to lead awards season. Demi Moore appears to be the new best actress frontrunner after her win for “The Substance” in the best actress in a musical or comedy feature category.
The body horror thriller, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, premiered at Cannes, where it was acquired by Mubi. It has maintained momentum as a critical darling. Moore’s victory on Sunday night over Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”) and Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) is the type of moment that can shift the awards race just as Oscar ballots are set to go out later this week.
The 61-year-old actress delivered a heartfelt speech about the longevity of her career, generating the kind of goodwill that has helped propel past winners in tight races,...

The games were the most-streamed NFL contests in history, according to ratings data from Nielsen.
The NFL is undefeated. The league has traditionally not had a big presence on Christmas Day, and unless the holiday falls on a weekend has historically been content to let the NBA rule the yuletide airwaves. But that changed in 2024, as Netflix streamed two games live on Christmas. Both the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans games were lopsided duds, but new data from Nielsen shows that it didn’t matter to audiences, who made the games the most-streamed NFL contests in history.
Key Details: Both games saw an average minute audience of over 24 million viewers. The Ravens vs. Texans halftime show featuring Beyoncé peaked at 27 million viewers. Netflix will stream games on Christmas in 2025, as well. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com
