A new study suggests that revenue per user on Netflix’s advertising tier will continue to be outpaced by its ad-free plans.

The journey into ad-supported streaming is a marathon, not a sprint for Netflix. The streaming service, which recently announced that it has crossed the of 300 million global customers threshold, is still not seeing explosive growth from its ad-supported “Standard with Ads” plan, first introduced in late 2022. Global advertising revenue is on the rise for Netflix, but new data from Bernstein Research shows that the streamer’s average revenue per member (Arm) on its ad plan will continue to lag behind that of its ad-free tier.

The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday to the usual surprised and offended audience.

The announcement was delayed by a few days due to the wildfires spreading across Los Angeles, but Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang shared the news live on Jan. 23 from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The award show is slated to take place as planned, airing on March 2.

The international trend begun by “Parasite” in 2020 continues. On Oscar nominations morning, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) was expected to lead the nominations, and did not disappoint, with a record 13 chances to win an Oscar on March 2.

Almost 10,000 Academy voters are invited to cast their ballots from February 11 – 18, and some twenty per cent of those voters live overseas. Both France’s Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez” and Brazil’s Portuguese “I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics) landed in Best Picture and scored at least one acting nod, along with the expected Best International Feature Film.

But without an Oppenheimer-esque juggernaut dominating the precursor awards, it’s expected to be a tight race with formidable competition.

The 97th annual Oscar nominations were revealed Thursday morning in Los Angeles. And the newest lineup featured a number of historic milestones. Among them this year:

To end the year, Netflix wrapped up a deal to stream the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups in the United States, and that string of successes might lead one to think that the service is all in on major sports deals going forward. But company co-ceo Ted Sarandos pumped the breaks on that line of thinking on Tuesday, while discussing Netflix’s sports future during its conference call to analyze its fourth quarter 2024 earnings.

Throughout 2024, streaming customers watched with horror as service after service announced new price increases. All kept one eye fixed on Netflix, which held off on price hikes throughout 2024. That reprieve has ended, however; when Netflix announced its fourth quarter 2024 earnings on Tuesday, it also dropped the news that it was raising subscription prices on all three of its available plans in the United States. It’s earnings report season once again. As is always the case, Netflix will get things started for the companies that include results of their streaming services, and revealed on Tuesday, Jan. 21 that it had increased to 301.63 million subscribers during the final quarter of 2024.

That was a jump of 18.91 million subscribers which far exceeded Wall Street forecasts that said the service would gain 8.2 million customers during the quarter. Netflix ended the third quarter of 2024 with 282.72 million global subscribers.

Digging into the data, Netflix saw relatively even subscriber growth from all of the major regions of the world, showing that the increases were not simply based on the introduction of the service in new markets. Notably, “La La Land,” also a musical, is the only one to lose the best picture.
