Back in June, we heard that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are set to share the screen again in Rip, a crime thriller that’s written and directed by Joe Carnahan and is set up at the Netflix streaming service. Earlier this week, Sasha Calle, who played Supergirl in The Flash, and singer/songwriter Teyana Taylor, who starred in the drama A Thousand and One, joined the cast. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that two more actors have signed on to appear in the film: Catalina Sandino Moreno of the MGM+ series From and Néstor Carbonell, who was recently seen on the FX / Hulu series Shōgun.

Rip will follow a group of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray after they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.

BFFs Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have found their next collaboration. The “Good Will Hunting” and “Air” team will next star in “Rip,” a new Netflix thriller from writer and director Joe Carnahan.

Plot details and release date remain under wraps. The film will be produced by Artists Equity — the artist-led studio founded by Affleck and Damon in 2022.

Artist Equity’s other projects include the Cillian Murphy starrer “Small Things Like These,” a sequel to “The Accountant” and the Jennifer Lopez-led films “Unstoppable” and “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”

The latest collaboration between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is heading to Netflix.

The streaming service has acquired the rights to Rip, the thriller feature that Joe Carnahan is directing, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Damon and Affleck’s production company, Artists Equity, is behind the project.

Damon and Affleck will co-star in the movie and also serve as producers. Plot details have not yet been shared.

THR reported last month that the film package was being shopped around town, aiming for a fall shoot.

The two stars, who earned Oscars for their work on the screenplay for Good Will Hunting, most recently co-starred together in Amazon’s Air Jordan-focused film, Air, which Affleck directed. Damon and Affleck have also appeared together in such movies as Dogma and The Last Duel, and they starred in a Dunkin’ Donuts ad that aired during this year’s Super Bowl.

As a severe storm heads their way, a trapped anchor causes their boat to capsize, throwing the four friends violently into the freezing water. US Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close (Josh Duhamel) and his crew summon their largest ship to cut through the raging ocean as the group battles massive waves, dehydration, severe hypothermia, and marine predators, in their epic struggle to survive and return home to their distraught loved ones.

Josh Duhamel will join the ensemble of the survival thriller “Not Without Hope,” an adaptation of Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman’s best-selling book that will be written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Also joining the cast are JoBeth Williams, Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell and Marshall Cook.

As previously announced, Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) is starring in the film, which tells the real-life story of a tragic 2009 boating accident involving Schuyler, his friends Will Bleakley (Cook) and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrell). Levi will play Schuyler.

The search-and rescue-operation captivated national attention. Duhamel will portray U.S. Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close, who oversaw a crew that cut through the ocean to try to find the friends who went missing. Carnahan has some experience orchestrating survival tales, having previously directed “The Grey,” which found Liam Neeson battling very hungry wolves after a plane crash stranded his character in a snowy mountain range.

The new Gerard Butler film Kandahar has marked an unfortunate milestone for the star. The project, which opened in theaters on May 26, stars Butler as a CIA operative who goes undercover in Afghanistan. It took No. 7 at the box office this weekend, behind this weekend's other new wide releases The Little Mermaid 2023, The Machine, and About My Father as well as Fast X, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

This weekend Kandahar debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a firmly Rotten score of 46 percent. This marks the 30th film in his career that has received a Rotten score. This is a particularly overwhelming number when taken in consideration with the fact that he only has 43 scored movies on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that about 70 percent of the titles he has starred in have met with critical derision.

A sequel to Plane has been confirmed with an even more ridiculous title than the first installment. The Jean-François Richet-directed action flick starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter as an airplane pilot teaming up with a prisoner to rescue the passengers from a terrorist group after their plane crashes on a remote island was a surprise hit among critics and audiences. The film currently has a 77 rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed 43 million at the worldwide box office over a 25 million budget.

Now, THR reports that a Plane 2, ridiculously titled Ship, will be shopped to studios at the European Film Market during the Berlin International Film Festival. Colter will reprise his character from Plane, Louis Gaspare, and the film will be set on a cargo ship in East Asia where he discovers a human trafficking ring inside, which leads him to take down the people responsible and rescue the captives.

Plane is an action thriller film directed by Jean-François Richet and starring Gerard Butler, Mike Colter, Yoson An and Tony Goldwyn.

Actor Frank Grillo recounts the disastrous first screening of his son's debut movie, Man's Son. Grillo has been acting since the early 1990s, with his first substantial role being on the soap opera Guiding Light. As his career continued, he bounced from minor roles in films like Minority Report to more significant roles in shows like The Shield and Prison Break. In addition, he appeared with Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness, acted alongside Liam Neeson in Joe Carnahan's The Grey, and helped coach Joel Edgerton to glory in Gavin O'Connor's Warrior.

Exclusive: Andrew Hunt is set to direct Deadmen from a script he also wrote. In addition, the filmmaker has inked with Zero Gravity Management for representation.

Deadmen, acquired by Hirsch Giovanni Entertainment, is a sci-fi/adventure/horror story set in the not-too-distant future with themes of cowboys, factory farming, family values, reanimation, and corporate and biomedical malfeasance. Hirsch Giovanni is also producing.

Hunt’s first feature directorial, the psychological drama/thriller, The Infernal Machine, starring Guy Pearce, Alice Eve, Jeremy Davies and Alex Pettyfer, was released theatrically last week by Paramount, and on VOD.

Hunt got his start in On the Lot, the reality show and online competition for filmmaking, produced by Steven Spielberg, Mark Burnett and David Goffin, where he finished in the top six out of 12,000 applicants. He has since written and directed multiple shorts including the successful Frost Bite, which was featured on Alter Horror platform and counted over 2 million views.

Exclusive: Frank Grillo (Kingdom) has joined the action-thriller Black Lotus, starring eleven-time world kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven, which is in production in the Netherlands.

In the film from director Todor Chapkanov (Viking Quest), Verhoeven plays the role of special forces officer Matteo Donner. After his best friend died while on a joint mission, he roamed the world struggling with guilt. Back in Amsterdam he ends up in a one-man war in the streets and on the canals of the city. Between explosions, flying bullets and crashing cars, Donner has only one goal: to rescue the kidnapped daughter of his dead friend. Details as to the role that Grillo will be playing haven’t been disclosed. Exclusive: Captain America, The Purge and Copshop star Frank Grillo is set to star in action movie Mr-9, which is shooting imminently in the U.S. and Bangladesh.

Writer-director Asif Akbar’s spy action-thriller is based on the popular Masud Rana novels written by late novelist Qazi Anwar Hussain. Plot details are being kept under wraps but we understand Grillo will play the nemesis of secret agent Rana — code name Mr-9 — of the Bangladesh Counter Intelligence Agency.

The film is adapted from the original first novel Masud Rana: Dhonghsho Pahar (Demolition Hill). Hussain published 550 novels published in the series, which is influenced by the James Bond franchise.

Bangladeshi production company Jaaz Multimedia, LA-based Al Bravo Films and Mr-9 Films have joined forces to get the film into production. Producers are Al Bravo, Hemdee Kiwanuka, Colin Bates, Akbar, Philip Tan and Abdul Aziz with executive producers Niko Foster, Peter Nguyen and Phillip B. Goldfine.

Exclusive: Liam Neeson is set to star in thriller Thug, reuniting with his Cold Pursuit director Hans Petter Moland, who will direct the film for Sculptor Media and Electromagnetic Productions, with Mossbank and CAA handling sales at next week’s Cannes market.

Thug revolves around an ageing San Pedro gangster (Neeson) who attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly. Tony Gayton wrote the screenplay.

Principal photography is slated for October, 2022, in Los Angeles.

Sculptor Media’s Warren Goz and Eric Gold are producing the movie alongside Roger Birnbaum (Rush Hour franchise) and Michael Besman (About Schmidt) for Electromagnetic Productions, and James Masciello’s Force Majeure (Copshop).

Exclusive: Frank Grillo is set to headline the thriller Dirty from Wonderfilm. Nick Vallelonga is directing the pic, which is based on a script he wrote. The plot is under wraps.

Wonderfilm’s Jeff Bowler and Bret Saxon are producing. Stien Davis and Chris Neville will executive produce for Wonderfilm. Mike Hatton is producing for Ton of Hats. Vallelonga is also producing.

“We were so thrilled that Frank loved this script as much as we did,” Saxon and Bowler said. “We’ve been lucky to work with him on two pictures recently and are amazed at his talent and total commitment to his roles. Nick has written a gripping script and we’re looking forward to seeing Frank bring the character to life.”

The story centers around a young couple hoping to create an aesthetically pleasing audition tape for an up-and-coming Charles Manson film. But when the couple chooses an eclectic desert Airbnb as the perfect backdrop, the dark events of the audition material slowly slip into their reality. Eventually, they find themselves

intertwined in the sinister plot of an occult leader (played by Grillo).

Josh Plasse and Brev Moss wrote the screenplay, which is inspired by Occult activity in the California desert. Cameras are schedule to roll in March in Yucca Valley, California.

Thanks to the pandemic, many a good film winds up overlooked and underappreciated. Joe Carnahan’s Copshop is such an offering. Out now from Universal Home Entertainment, it boasts a well-constructed story using a solid cast, and set almost entirely in a Nevada police station.

It’s clear something’s amiss when Teddy Murretto (Vincent Grillo) pulls up in a police car riddled with bullets and sucker punches rookie cop Valerie Young (Alexis Louder), forcing her to arrest him. The why becomes clear when the intoxicated Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler) is also brought in. Viddick is there to kill Murretto, who has been informing the Feds about an assassination plot. Add in Huber (Ryan O’Nan) and Anthony Lamb (Toby Huss) as wild cards just to keep things interesting.

Despite its 45-day exclusive theatrical window, the year’s top grossing domestic non-franchise film keeps adding to its at home revenues. Or maybe that window is part of its charm? With three weeks at #1 on the VOD charts, word of mouth drove its success and it’s close to a five-time multiple theatrcial gross from its opening weekend. Mel Gibson has been tapped to lead the Starz original series The Continental, which serves as a prequel to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick movies, our sister site Deadline reports.

Produced by Lionsgate Television, the three-night event takes John Wick fans back to 1975 New York City, where a young criminal named Winston Scott navigates the city’s nefarious underbelly in an attempt to take control of The Continental, a notorious hangout for all manner of ne’er-do-wells. Though Winston, who is played in the films by Ian McShane, has not yet been cast, Deadline reports that Gibson will be playing a character named Cormac.
