Gerard Butler is one of the most successful and recognizable actors in the world. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation as an action movie star. Some of Gerard Butler's best action movies include Olympus Has Fallen, Copshop, Plane, Den of Thieves, and its sequel, the recently released Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. His roles in these films and many others have cemented him as a legendary action star, but it's his collaboration with Zack Snyder that stands out as his most iconic role.

Gerard Butler has long been a staple of the action genre, and it seems as if he's only leaned harder into this area of his career over the last decade or so. After becoming a big name due to movies like Reign of Fire (2002) and 300 (2006), Butler appeared in a handful of exciting action flicks, including RocknRolla (2008), Gamer (2009), and Machine Gun Preacher (2011). It was in 2013, however, that Butler's action hero persona really evolved.
In 2013, Butler starred in Olympus Has Fallen, which could be seen as the start of a new phase of his career. In addition to starring in two sequels to this White House action movie, including London Has Fallen (2016) and Angel Has Fallen (2019), Butler appeared in a mix of action-forward movies that varied quite significantly in quality, including Geostorm (2017), Hunter Killer (2018), Greenland (2020), Copshop (2021), and Plane (2023). There was one 2018 title, however, that really struck a chord with audiences.

James Gunn is once again uniting a team of super-powered misfits in the new animated DC series, “Creature Commandos.” The “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad” filmmaker — and co-head of the new DC Universe — unites a cast full of familiar faces, including some you’ll recognize from “The Suicide Squad,” as a roster of less familiar superheroes, including Rick Flagg Sr., GI Robot and The Bride.
Check out a handy guide to the “Creature Commandos” cast and the DC characters to whom they’re lending their voices.

Amanda Waller is the imposing leader of A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans) and basically the closest thing the DC Universe has to its own Nick Fury. After the events of “The Suicide Squad,” Waller has been hemmed in; she can no longer use humans in her go-for-broke, off-the-books suicide missions. But don’t worry,...

Back in June, we heard that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are set to share the screen again in Rip, a crime thriller that’s written and directed by Joe Carnahan and is set up at the Netflix streaming service. Earlier this week, Sasha Calle, who played Supergirl in The Flash, and singer/songwriter Teyana Taylor, who starred in the drama A Thousand and One, joined the cast. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that two more actors have signed on to appear in the film: Catalina Sandino Moreno of the MGM+ series From and Néstor Carbonell, who was recently seen on the FX / Hulu series Shōgun.
Rip will follow a group of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray after they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.

Butler's 2009 thriller "Law Abiding Citizen" has found new popularity on Netflix. "Copshop" is a good companion film to "Law Abiding Citizen", addressing similar themes. Despite similarities, "Copshop" is considered more entertaining and well-received than "Law Abiding Citizen."
Despite its initially lukewarm critical reception, Gerard Butler's 2009 revenge thriller Law Abiding Citizen has found a new audience on Netflix, prompting many fans to seek out other similar movies from the 54-year-old actor's back catalog. Starring Butler as the deeply flawed, and arguably villainous vigilante Clyde Shelton, Law Abiding Citizen is one of Butler's most brutal movies, offering a distinctive view of violence and the broader justice system. However, while it certainly stands out in his resume, it is not a unique Gerard Butler project.

Frank Grillo knows what he wants.
The erstwhile Crossbones of the MCU has crafted a niche for himself as a contemporary Charles Bronson over the last decade, parlaying mainstream buzz from projects like “The Purge 2” and Mma drama series “Warrior” into a string of superior indie action movies — even if he himself shies away from Bronson comparisons when speaking about his career.
“Not that I’m comparing myself to Charles Bronson, because I couldn’t,” Grillo told IndieWire during a recent interview over Zoom, adding with a laugh, “Charles Bronson never took his shirt off on a soap opera.”
With respect to Grillo, Bronson simply didn’t have the same range. Grillo emerged from a three-year run on “Guiding Light” in the late ’90s to a decade as a working actor before landing a juicy supporting role in the Liam Neeson-starring “The Grey.” Then came 2014 and his role...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Josh Duhamel will join the ensemble of the survival thriller “Not Without Hope,” an adaptation of Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman’s best-selling book that will be written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Also joining the cast are JoBeth Williams, Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell and Marshall Cook.
As previously announced, Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) is starring in the film, which tells the real-life story of a tragic 2009 boating accident involving Schuyler, his friends Will Bleakley (Cook) and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrell). Levi will play Schuyler.
The search-and rescue-operation captivated national attention. Duhamel will portray U.S. Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close, who oversaw a crew that cut through the ocean to try to find the friends who went missing. Carnahan has some experience orchestrating survival tales, having previously directed “The Grey,” which found Liam Neeson battling very hungry wolves after a plane crash stranded his character in a snowy mountain range.

The new Gerard Butler film Kandahar has marked an unfortunate milestone for the star. The project, which opened in theaters on May 26, stars Butler as a CIA operative who goes undercover in Afghanistan. It took No. 7 at the box office this weekend, behind this weekend's other new wide releases The Little Mermaid 2023, The Machine, and About My Father as well as Fast X, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
This weekend Kandahar debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a firmly Rotten score of 46 percent. This marks the 30th film in his career that has received a Rotten score. This is a particularly overwhelming number when taken in consideration with the fact that he only has 43 scored movies on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that about 70 percent of the titles he has starred in have met with critical derision.

Gerard Butler Once Caught Heat for Saying He Dumbed Down His Acting When Working With Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie has worked with many actors over the years, including her Lara Croft co-star Gerard Butler. But the Plane actor once made a slight quip about the actor that landed him in a little hot water.
Angelina Jolie thought Gerard Butler could be her equal in ‘Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’ Gerard Butler | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Cradle of Life was the 2003 sequel to Jolie’s original Tomb Raider film. It saw Jolie reprising her role as video game character and adventurer Lara Croft. But the second film saw her teaming up with a new co-star. Whereas the first film Jolie saw herself paired with Daniel Craig, this time she was acting alongside Gerard Butler. Jolie felt Butler’s onscreen presence was perfect to match hers.

A sequel to Plane has been confirmed with an even more ridiculous title than the first installment. The Jean-François Richet-directed action flick starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter as an airplane pilot teaming up with a prisoner to rescue the passengers from a terrorist group after their plane crashes on a remote island was a surprise hit among critics and audiences. The film currently has a 77 rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed 43 million at the worldwide box office over a 25 million budget.
Now, THR reports that a Plane 2, ridiculously titled Ship, will be shopped to studios at the European Film Market during the Berlin International Film Festival. Colter will reprise his character from Plane, Louis Gaspare, and the film will be set on a cargo ship in East Asia where he discovers a human trafficking ring inside, which leads him to take down the people responsible and rescue the captives.

Plane is an action thriller film directed by Jean-François Richet and starring Gerard Butler, Mike Colter, Yoson An and Tony Goldwyn.
Gerard Butler, the man that lives his film life (lately above all) this time around saves some passengers from the dangers in the jungle and their hostile inhabitants
About the Movie
This man who seems to be wearing blockbuster on his t-shirt, knows what he is doing and, although he tried his luck (with Katherine Heigl in The Ugly Truth) in romance, seems to fare better in living in danger and saving lives with his rough yet effective style.
Plane (2023)
Butler is not the kind of guy to be delivering kicks, his style is more about adapting to a situation and thanks to his kindness and his luck, saving the world like that because he can.
Plane is an excercise in making an entertaining action movie for all audiences...

After a great start to the New Year, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend offers another four-day weekend, which has often been the best week in the month of January to have a substantial hit. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Three years ago, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for “Bad Boys for Life,” a movie that opened with 73 million over the four-day weekend. Two months later, Covid hit and movie theaters shut down, allowing that buddy comedy to become the biggest hit of 2020 with just 204.5 million in North America.
Even before that, this holiday weekend has seen sizable hits, including Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” in 2015 and the original “Ride Along,” starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, a year earlier.
Going into the weekend, most may just have to accept that “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “M3GAN” will likely remain the #1 and 2 movies,...

Gerard Butler has been bringing back some seriously cool action flicks as of late. You have Den of Thieves, the thrilling and suspenseful Copshop, and Greenland – an impressive disaster thriller. The man has been busy. And now, he is your pilot in the blast of feature, Plane. The new thriller takes him on highs and lows as a pilot who crashes into a war zone during a tumultuous storm. It’s a fun one. And it also co-stars the very talented star of small screen Luke Cage and the series Evil, Mr. Mike Colter. And it’s a delight seeing these two fine gents face off against baddies in the Jean-François Richet directed tale.
It’s always terrific to chat with Mr. Gerard Butler. The man is a delight through and through, and it’s enjoyable to talk about a project like this. In many ways, Plane is a throwback...

Actor Frank Grillo recounts the disastrous first screening of his son's debut movie, Man's Son. Grillo has been acting since the early 1990s, with his first substantial role being on the soap opera Guiding Light. As his career continued, he bounced from minor roles in films like Minority Report to more significant roles in shows like The Shield and Prison Break. In addition, he appeared with Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness, acted alongside Liam Neeson in Joe Carnahan's The Grey, and helped coach Joel Edgerton to glory in Gavin O'Connor's Warrior.
One of Grillo's most well-known roles is Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character debuted as a villain in 2016's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Thanks to the pandemic, many a good film winds up overlooked and underappreciated. Joe Carnahan’s Copshop is such an offering. Out now from Universal Home Entertainment, it boasts a well-constructed story using a solid cast, and set almost entirely in a Nevada police station.
It’s clear something’s amiss when Teddy Murretto (Vincent Grillo) pulls up in a police car riddled with bullets and sucker punches rookie cop Valerie Young (Alexis Louder), forcing her to arrest him. The why becomes clear when the intoxicated Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler) is also brought in. Viddick is there to kill Murretto, who has been informing the Feds about an assassination plot. Add in Huber (Ryan O’Nan) and Anthony Lamb (Toby Huss) as wild cards just to keep things interesting.
The ensuing chaos is loud, brash, and inventive as the cops and criminals and innocents are all caught up in a cat and mouse game,...

“Free Guy” (Disney/$5.99) continues to do theaters a huge service. Despite its 45-day exclusive theatrical window, the year’s top grossing domestic non-franchise film keeps adding to its at home revenues. Or maybe that window is part of its charm? With three weeks at #1 on the VOD charts, word of mouth drove its success and it’s close to a five-time multiple theatrcial gross from its opening weekend. In the year-plus we’ve been checking these out, no other title has accomplished this.
With this week’s drop to standard pricing, the volume of new business for the Ryan Reynolds comedy must be considerable: The Vudu chart calculates by total revenue and favors premium VOD titles, but the now-cheaper $5.99 “Free Guy” topped five titles that cost $19.99.
Among debuts, “Copshop” (Open Road/$19.99) with Gerard Butler bested “Dear Evan Hansen” (Universal/$19.99) for initial response. Action-thriller “Copshop” placed on two charts, while “Hansen...

Mel Gibson has been tapped to lead the Starz original series The Continental, which serves as a prequel to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick movies, our sister site Deadline reports.
Produced by Lionsgate Television, the three-night event takes John Wick fans back to 1975 New York City, where a young criminal named Winston Scott navigates the city’s nefarious underbelly in an attempt to take control of The Continental, a notorious hangout for all manner of ne’er-do-wells. Though Winston, who is played in the films by Ian McShane, has not yet been cast, Deadline reports that Gibson will be playing a character named Cormac.
