It wasn’t exactly surprising when Freeform’s beloved critically acclaimed “Single Drunk Female” was canceled this month after just two seasons and immediately pulled from Hulu. Sure, Freeform touted the sitcom as the highest-rated original comedy during the New York City Season 2 premiere before the series returned with all new episodes on Hulu in April. But its cancellation is just one of the many reminders that networks don’t invest long-term in women-fronted shows that focus on “messy” millennial women.

Award-winning actress Louise Fletcher has died at age 88.

Deadline reports that news of her death was announced Friday, Sept. 23 by her family via agent David Shaul.

While no cause of death was specified, Shaul told the outlet that Fletcher passed away in her sleep, surrounded by family, at the home she had built from a 300-year-old farmhouse in Montdurausse, France. Earlier on Friday, she said to her family about her home, “I can’t believe I created something so meaningful to my well-being.”

Fletcher won the Best Actress Oscar at the 1976 Academy Awards for her portrayal of sadistic Nurse Ratched in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, a role that remains her best-known; the character was successfully resurrected in 2020 for the Netflix series “Ratched”, which told the her backstory.

Louise Fletcher, best known for her Academy Award-winning role as Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," has died at the age of 88. Fletcher's family confirmed to Deadline through her agent that she died in her sleep at her home in Montdurausse, France, on Friday.

Fletcher was born to deaf parents in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 23, 1934. She learned to speak and act from her aunt at the age of 8, and attended the University of North Carolina before a cross-country trip left her marooned in L.A. (per Variety). There, she became involved in acting in a professional capacity, appearing on television in guest spots on shows like "The Untouchables," "Wagon Train," and "Perry Mason." However, her filmography soon went dark in 1963 with the film "A Gathering of Eagles."

Louise Fletcher, the sweet actress from Alabama who won an Academy Award for her turn as the heartless Nurse Ratched — one of the most reviled characters in movie history — in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, has died. She was 88.

Fletcher died Friday of natural causes at her home in Montdurausse, France, her son Andrew Bick told The Hollywood Reporter. She had survived two bouts with breast cancer.

A daughter of deaf parents — she made one of the most touching acceptance speeches in Oscar history — Fletcher also starred as a psychiatrist in Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) and played opposite Peter Falk amid the star-studded ensemble in The Cheap Detective (1978).

On television, she portrayed the religious leader Kai Winn Adami on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and received Emmy nominations in 1996 and 2004 for her guest-starring stints on Picket Fences and Joan of Arcadia, respectively.

Isla Fisher (Wolf Like Me) and Greg Kinnear (Shining Vale) will topline the family comedy The Present, from director Christian Ditter (How to Be Single), which has entered production in Los Angeles.

In the film from Stuart Ford’s independent content studio AGC Studios, a brilliant boy discovers he can manipulate time using an enchanted family heirloom, then teaming up with his siblings to go back to the eve of their parents’ separation in hopes of changing the outcome. As their schemes become more elaborate, the siblings will learn about family bonds and what they can and can’t control. Fisher and Kinnear are playing the parents in search of reconciliation, with Easton Rocket Sweda (General Hospital), Shay Rudolph (The Baby-Sitters Club) and Mason Shea Joyce (Euphoria) portraying the siblings who just might be the only people who can make that happen.

ABC’s Kay Oyegun drama pilot has found its five therapists. Sendhil Ramamurthy (Never Have I Ever), Johnny Simmons (Girlboss), Rachel Hilson (Winning Time), Demetrius Grosse (Fear the Walking Dead) and Rahnuma Panthaky (NCIS: Los Angeles ) are set as leads opposite previously announced Marsha Stephanie Blake.

The untitled hourlong project comes from 20th Television and is written and exec produced by This Is Us writer-producer Oyegun.

Betty Davis, a soul and funk singer of the 1960s whose growling, raspy vocal style and unapologetically explicit lyrics would influence future performers from Prince and Erykah Badu to Outkast, died today of natural causes at her home in Homestead, Pennsylvania. She was 77.

While the reviews for Amazon Prime's Cinderella (2021) have been mixed at best so far, one thing that most audience members can appreciate is that the film has fantastic musical numbers. Being directed by Kay Cannon is one thing but another reason these scenes worked likely lies with the choreographer.

The actor and her Denver & Delilah production banner have inked a two-year first-look deal with HBO and HBO Max, Variety has confirmed.

Under the deal, Theron and her company will develop TV projects for both the premium cabler and the streamer, looking to add to its TV slate which previously included David Fincher’s “Mindhunter,” and “Girlboss,” the series created by Kay Cannon. On the unscripted front, Denver & Delilah produced car series “Hyperdrive.”

Andrew Haas, who recently joined the company, will oversee Denver & Delilah’s television slate. The company was previously under a first-look at Universal Cable Productions.

Charlize Theron has signed a two-year first-look TV deal with HBO and HBO Max, a WarnerMedia spokesperson told TheWrap Tuesday.

The multi-year, cross-platform pact will see the “Bombshell” star and her producing partners Beth Kono and Aj Dix develop small-screen projects for the WarnerMedia-owned pay TV channel and newly launched streaming service through their Denver & Delilah production company, with Andrew Haas overseeing the TV series slate.

HBO Max debuted in May and boasts a lineup of originals that includes the first season of anthology “Love Life,” which starred Anna Kendrick, and the Kaley Cuoco dramedy “The Flight Attendant,” among others.

However, the streaming service has developed a reputation for not letting its series go on for too long. Exclusive: Biohackers, the latest buzzy Netflix original series out of Germany, has been renewed after a positive response to Season 1.

The show debuted on the platform globally August 20. It tells a story of revolutionary biohacking technology and intrigue at a German university, focusing on a mysterious student played by Luna Wedler.

Filming will start on Season 2 in the coming months in Freiburg and Munich.

Biohackers was created by Christian Ditter, who serves as showrunner, director and writer. Ditter is a German filmmaker who is established in the U.S. after helming the Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson romcom How To Be Single and the Lily Collins and Sam Claflin romance Love, Rosie, as well as the American Netflix series Girlboss.

One aspect of Netflix that often goes unsung is the way it brings foreign TV shows to the US. This has resulted in some particularly cool television from Europe jumping the pond, including chillers like Marianne, Curon and Dark. Now, a new show looks set to join their ranks: Biohackers, a German production that explores the murky waters of biohacking, aka genetic experimentation.

Set in Freiberg, Germany, we follow medical student Mia Akerlund (Luna Wedler) as she immerses herself deep into the world of experimental genetic experiments. As she does, she investigates her brother’s mysterious death, which seems to be linked to the work of a top lecturer at the university. What follows looks like a pretty cool thriller, as Akerlund begins with custom-designed glow-in-the-dark mice and ends with hints of much more sinister DNA tinkering in later episodes.

Exclusive: Quibi’s latest addition to its growing slate of short-form programming is the scripted series Dead Spots from Sony Pictures Television. The series, which is currently in development, is based on the book by Melissa F. Olson.

As described in the official logline, Dead Spots is “an urban fantasy dramedy about a lowly janitor for Los Angeles’ supernatural community who cleans up their messes in order to keep the Old World hidden from humanity. She’s completely under-appreciated and under-paid until… she embraces her ability to turn the powerful, powerless.”

Jen Braeden is set to write and executive produce the series alongside Kay Cannon and Laverne McKinnon, whose K&l Productions is set to produce.

Olson, a writing teacher and English professor has written more than a dozen novels in the Old World universe, Pi mystery The Big Keep, and numerous short stories and novellas, including the Nightshades trilogy for Tor.

Attention Capital, the new media holding company, has acquired Sophia Amoruso’s struggling female-focused multimedia company Girlboss, Amoruso confirmed on Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Amoruso will become a founding partner of Attention, launched in August by former Snapchat content boss Nick Bell, former Palantir exec Ashlyn Gentry and Joe Marchese, former president of advertising revenue for Fox Networks Group.

In a tweet, Amoruso called Attention “a holding startup that wants to fix media,” adding she is “so excited” to join the company and “blow this s— the f— up.”

A rep for Attention Capital had no additional comment.

Girlboss founder Sophia Amoruso has assembled an online community of professional and aspiring women seeking advice and community in advancing careers and running businesses. The deal with Attention Capital will give the three-year-old Girlboss resources to improve the company’s digital operations, expand live events and aggressively pursue development of other business lines including television and licensing and merchandising.
