Jamie Foxx is formalizing his relationship with the almost-namesake broadcast network where he has two current series.

Fox Entertainment Studios, Fox’s studio and production arm, has signed a first-look deal with the Oscar winner and his Foxxhole Productions. Under the multi-year deal, Foxx will develop and executive produce both scripted an unscripted series projects; Fox Entertainment Studios will get the first look at any scripted series and will have exclusive rights to Foxx’s projects and producing services on unscripted shows.

Foxx and the network already have a relationship: He hosts (alongside is daughter Corinne) and executive produces Fox’s music game show Beat Shazam and is an executive producer of the drama Alert: Missing Persons Unit, which begins its third season on March 25.

More than two week after it was announced that director Leslye Headland had exited the project, it was reported on Tuesday (February 11) that The Burial director Maggie Betts has signed on to direct the upcoming Netflix adaption of the New York Times best-selling novel.

Filmmaker Maggie Betts has been tapped to direct “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” for Netflix after Leslye Headland’s departure from the project.

Betts, whose credits include Amazon MGM’s Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones-led legal drama “The Burial” and Sony Pictures Classic’s 2017 drama “Novitiate,” will also co-write the screenplay with Liz Tigelaar.

Jamie Foxx is finally discussing the medical emergency that kept him out of public life for the past two years in his new Netflix special “What Had Happened Was,” Foxx’s one-man show that will premiere globally on Dec. 10.

The trailer for the Netflix special starts with a series of headlines. These range from the straightforward, like TMZ reporting the comedian and actor was hospitalized for a “medical complication, to the obscene, like a comment that reads “Jamie Foxx is a clone.”

The show is loosely based on real-life events chronicled in Truth.Media’s Firebug podcast hosted by Kary Antholis (who is an executive producer of the series).

Firebug, produced in house by Apple Studios, will follow a troubled detective (Smollett) and an enigmatic arson investigator (Egerton) who are pursuing two serial arsonists in the Pacific Northwest. Smollett’s charcter, named Michelle, is also a rising star in her department.

Last year saw Jamie Foxx have a packed slate of projects, which include starring in movies like They Cloned Tyrone, Strays and The Burial. He even has a few projects in post-production that were filming around that time, like Back in Action, a vehicle co-starring Cameron Diaz in a return to movies after a decade hiatus. Foxx would eventually recover from his private situation and release a social media video assuring fans that he’s back in good health and great spirits. A few months after his first major public appearance since his mystery illness, at the at the Critics Choice Association‘s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & Aapi Achievements in December, “The Burial” actor was back on stage on Sunday, March 3 to accept the Producers Award from the African American Film Critics Association alongside his Foxxhole Productions partner Datari Turner.

“Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’m going to tell you what happened, but I gotta do it my way. I’m going to do it in a funny way. I’m going to be on stage. Whenever Jamie Foxx steps up to a microphone, one can expect to be entertained.

And that’s precisely what the Oscar and Grammy-winning superstar plans to do when he hits the road to discuss the circumstances around his sudden hospitalization nearly a year ago.

On Sunday afternoon, Foxx offered attendees of the African American Film Critics Association’s (Aafca) Special Achievement Awards luncheon a sneak peek at the tone of that material — a mix of heartfelt reflection with some top-notch zingers — while accepting Aafca’s Producers Award alongside his Foxxhole Productions partner Datari Turner.

2023 was a big year for the company thanks to the back-to-back successes of Netflix’s “They Cloned Tyrone” and Amazon’s “The Burial.” But while Foxxhole’s movies were shooting to the top of the streaming charts, Foxx was fighting for his life after suffering a medical emergency — the nature of which has not been disclosed.

The African American Film Critics Association held its annual luncheon honoring cinematic black excellence at the 7th Annual Aafca Special Achievement Awards, on Sunday, March 3rd at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown Los Angeles.

Guests at the event included Skye P. Marshall, Boris Kodjoe, Roxanne Avent, Jonathan Majors, Meagan Good and Isaac G. Bryan.

Courtney B. Vance, Nia Long, and Jurnee Smollett took the stage to present Jamie Foxx and Datari Turner with the Aafca’s Producers Award. The duo, known for their outstanding work through Foxxhole Productions, was recognized for their exceptional contributions to three prominent films of 2023: They Cloned Tyrone, Story Ave, and The Burial. The award acknowledged Foxxhole’s dedication to showcasing inclusive narratives.

Black List founder Franklin Leonard presented choreographer Fatima Robinson with Aafca’s Salute to Excellence Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to choreography, including her work on The Color Purple.

Hollywood is often criticized about the amount of follow through there is on promises for diversity and inclusivity. Yet there is much to celebrate about the films that are being made about Black life, and the 15th annual awards by the African American Film Critics Assn. will do just that on Feb. 21.

“American Fiction,” “The Color Purple” and “Origin” — named best comedy, musical and drama, respectively — all scored multiple film honors and inclusion on Aafca’s list of top 10 films of the year. Performers including Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Lily Gladstone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Danielle Brooks will also be celebrated during the ceremony, hosted once again by Roy Wood Jr.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Television’s hit series “The Night Agent” has filled out its cast for Season 2 with Michael Malarkey (“The Vampire Diaries”) and Keon Alexander (“The Expanse”) as series regulars and Navid Negahban (“Homeland”) and Rob Heaps (“Station 11”) as recurring guest stars, opposite returning stars Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan.

Based on the best selling novel by Matthew Quirk, the first season of the show followed Peter Sutherland (Basso), an FBI agent recruited to monitor a rarely used phone in the basement of the White House for the mysterious Night Agent program. When cybersecurity expert Rose Larkin (Buchanan) calls the number one night, they’re both pulled into a twisty conspiracy that reaches to the top echelons of the U.S. government.

Season 2 will follow Sutherland as he begins his career as a full-time Night Agent, while maintaining a relationship with Larkin.

Oscar nominee Colman Domingo picked up three nominations and Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri a pair to lead the motion picture and television categories, respectively, while Victoria Monét (six) and Usher (five) paced the music nominations for the 55th NAACP Image Awards. Domingo’s bids came for Entertainer of the Year and one each for Actor in a Motion Picture (“Rustin”) and Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (“The Color Purple”), while Edebiri’s came in Supporting Comedy Actress for “The Bear” and Guest Actress in a Comedy for “Abbott Elementary.”

Other major nominees were, for Entertainer of the Year, Domingo, Usher, Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer and – for Outstanding Motion Picture – “American Fiction,” “Rustin,” Origin,” “The Color Purple” and “They Cloned Tyrone.” Netflix led the pack with 55 total nominations, with Amazon second, tallying 27. RCA Records received the most of any record label in the recording categories with 20.

Just days after only earning one Oscar nomination, the new version of The Color Purple leads the 2024 NAACP Image Awards nominations.

The Blitz Bazawule film is up for 16 awards, including outstanding motion picture, and stars Fantasia Barrino and Colman Domingo are both up for entertainer of the year.

Domingo also starred in Rustin, a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination, with the George C. Wolfe film racking up eight NAACP Image Awards nominations. Domingo is nominated for Image Awards for his roles in both films.

In the best motion picture category, The Color Purple and Rustin will face off against seven-time nominee American Fiction (another Oscar contender), four-time nominee Origin (left out of this year’s Oscar nods) and nine-time nominee They Cloned Tyrone.

Other top film nominees are A Thousand and One and Creed III, each up for seven awards and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, up for six awards.

It’s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who — after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively — lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.

Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin,” outstanding supporting actor for “The Color Purple” and entertainer of the year, the ceremony’s top prize.

Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for “The Bear” and guest actress for “Abbott Elementary.” Victoria Monét received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The “Jaguar II” hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.

Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer — three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year — round out the nominees for that award.

Nominations were revealed Thursday for the 55th NAACP Image Awards, with newly minted Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, Emmy winners Ayo Edebiri and Keke Palmer, and Victoria Monét and Usher among those scoring multiple nominations.

The awards, which honor the year’s best in Black excellence in the fields of motion pictures, television, music, books and podcasts and are voted on by the public, will be handed out March 16 in a primetime ceremony to air on BET and CBS.

Domingo scored noms for his lead role playing civil rights icon Bayard Rustin in Netflix’s Rustin and for playing Mister in Warner Bros’ The Color Purple. He also is up for the Image Awards’ marquee Entertainer of the Year in a category that includes Palmer, Color Purple castmates Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino, and Usher. The African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) announced the winners of its upcoming 15th annual Aafca Awards, which honor outstanding achievement in film. In a departure from last year, in which the organization gave Best Picture to “The Woman King,” this year’s top category was split into three, with “American Fiction” winning Best Comedy, “Origin” winning Best Drama, and “The Color Purple” winning Best Musical.

The trio of films also respectively sit atop Aafca’s Top 10 Films of the Year. Winners were voted on by all of Aafca’s 100+ members. The 15th Annual Aafca Awards will take place on February 21 at the Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The Cinema Eye Honors announced the winners for its documentary films and series competition Friday in Manhattan, with “32 Sounds” taking the honor for outstanding nonfiction feature. Maite Alberdi won outstanding direction for “The Eternal Memory” together with Kaouther Ben Hania for “Four Daughters,” while “Paul T. Goldman” won outstanding nonfiction series.

Every year, the African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) recognizes stand-out achievements in TV and film, with a special emphasis in entertainment representing the Black experience. Aafca has announced its esteemed list of 2024 honorees, which will be celebrated at the group’s 7th Annual Aafca Special Achievement Awards luncheon, taking place on Sunday, March 3 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in Los Angeles.

The intimate event will bestow special statues on individuals like Jamie Foxx, Datari Turner, Fatima Robinson, Michael Latt and Deon Taylor, plus groups from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Delta Airlines.
