A slave, Tomás, leaving in Colombia in the early 1800's makes a final payment to his master, Don Domingo, to buy his freedom and asks about being able to do the same for his wife and daughter.
After the plantation where Tomás and Lorenza were held as slaves is burned down, they move away with their daughter Milagros and their masters' daughter Victoria.
Victoria feels that she is alone and there is no one else like her. She convinces Miguel to take her outside the Palenque to see other white people. They are followed back home, putting the Palenque in danger.
