With her nomination this year for “The Journey” from the Netflix historical drama The Six Triple Eight, Diane Warren has now contended 16 times at the Oscars, including the last eight years in a row, for Best Original Song. But the veteran artist — who has a Grammy, an Emmy, and two Golden Globes in her trophy case — has yet to score a competitive Oscar. Could this be her year?
Warren does, however, have an Honorary Oscar, which she collected in 2022 for her impressive body of work. That made her the first and currently only songwriter to receive that recognition from the Motion Picture Academy.

In a major push into animation, media tech investment firm Stars Collective is partnering with Shanghai-based El Pajaro Pictures to develop, produce and distribute a fresh take on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved classic “The Little Prince.”
“The Little Prince” weaves a poetic tale of a young prince who travels from planet to planet, meeting eccentric characters that offer allegorical insights into human nature. Narrated by a stranded aviator, the story unfolds as the prince recounts his adventures and his quest to understand life’s deeper truths.
The novella has inspired several adaptations. The 1974 live-action musical, directed by Stanley Donen, captured its whimsy, while Mark Osborne’s 2015 animated feature blended CGI and stop-motion and proved there’s still magic in the property, pulling in $97 million worldwide, including $24 million from China. The original 1943 book has been translated into over 300 languages with more than 200 million copies sold globally.

“I am ready to go. I am ready, Warden.” These were the last words of death row inmate John Henry Ramirez shortly before his execution in the Polunsky Unit of the Department of Criminal Justice in Livingston, Texas. This final statement became the foundation for filmmaker Smriti Mundhra’s documentary — and the title of the film — I Am Ready, Warden.
The short, from MTV Documentary Films, recounts the emotionally charged story of Ramirez, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 2008. His victim was Pablo Castro, a convenience store employee in Corpus Christi, Texas. After stabbing Castro almost three dozen times in a botched robbery, Ramirez fled to Mexico; it took four years before he was apprehended and extradited. Thanksgiving is almost here, which means it’s time for one of the most-anticipated events of the holiday season: The 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Every year, dozens of balloons, floats, marching bands, and performance groups usher in the Christmas season with a star-studded parade in New York City. It’s a tradition dating back 100 years. In 1924, Macy’s celebrated the opening of its expanded flagship Herald Square store with a parade of floats, clowns, and animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. The balloons were added in 1927, and the big event has continued to delight New Yorkers and people around the country nearly every year since.
The 98th edition of the parade will feature balloons new and old, performances by stars such as Jennifer Hudson and Billy Porter, and, of course, an appearance from Santa Claus himself. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Jussie Smollett’s conviction in an alleged hate crime hoax was overturned on Thursday by the Illinois Supreme Court.
The “Empire” actor was convicted in December 2021 of five felony counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself in 2019 and was sentenced to 150 days in county jail, plus 30 months of probation and $130,000 in restitution. This came after the original charges against him were dropped in March 2019, but the case was picked back up when the state conducted an independent inquiry with a special prosecutor. In December 2023, a state appellate court rejected his bid for an appeal and it was ruled that he would have to complete his full sentence, six days of which he served before being freed pending appeal. Earlier this year, the Illinois Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal.

After watching the first six episodes of Grotesquerie, I am certain that either Detective Lois Tryon is hallucinating about the titular serial killer or the murderer is none other than the shady priest, Charlie Mayhew. A third scenario could be that the series is executed so poorly that it makes most of the scenes look tacky, almost like everything is happening in a dream. Anyway, coming back to our weekly recap, the fifth episode picked up from where last week’s episode had ended. Lois and Sister Megan Duval gave a lift to a blood-soaked woman named Andrea, who requested they drop her off at a nearby motel where she was staying. Now, this motel in itself seemed quite strange. The episode failed to explain why so many unusual things were happening around this motel and how it was linked to the Grotesquerie killer, so maybe the creators aren’t...

When Josh Gad joined the voice cast of Disney's animated movie "Frozen," which came out in 2013, he probably didn't think that he was about to become part of one of the biggest pop culture juggernauts in recent history. Both the original and its 2019 sequel, "Frozen II," made buckets of money at the box office, while the first movie also scored an Academy Award for best original song (thanks to the inescapable earworm "Let It Go"). Plus, Gad's character Olaf, a living snowman who wants to experience summer, became a breakout success on his own. So does Gad have any regrets about his "Frozen" experience? Yes, actually. He wishes he'd changed his voice a little more for the character.
"If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would've created a different voice," Gad said while participating in an interview at Fan Expo Canada,...

Eminem has dropped a grisly music video for “Tobey,” his latest Death of Slim Shady single with Big Sean and BabyTron.
The Cole Bennett-directed clip finds the three Michigan MCs digitally duplicated, delivering their verses and interacting with their doubles as the camera roams through a variety of settings, like a warehouse, hotel room, and club. When it finally gets to Eminem’s verse, the setting switches to the front of a house that looks a lot like the one on the cover of The Marshall Mathers LP.

When Oscar-winning producer Jonathan Sanger was first pitched “Cabrini,” the story of the first American saint, he wasn’t quite sure he was right for the project.
“I said, ‘I think it’s a great idea. I think you should make the movie. I don’t really think I’m the right guy to produce this,’” Sanger recalls of his early conversation with executive producer J. Eustace Wolfington. “I tend to like to make stories about real people, that most people who watch these stories can relate to. And I don’t know how to relate to a saint.”
Wolfington wouldn’t take no for an answer, telling Sanger he was missing the point: Francesca Cabrini may have become a saint, but her powerful story of overcoming adversity as both a woman and an Italian immigrant takes place far before her posthumous canonization in 1946.

Critics praised Boseman's acting in 21 Bridges, despite mixed reviews of the repetitive storyline. The film received a 54% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes but an impressive 91% from audiences. 21 Bridges was Chadwick Boseman's last film before his death in August 2020, highlighting his talent.
The 2019 action thriller 21 Bridges includes a well-rounded cast of established film and television actors who help bring life into the drama. The film follows Andre Davis, an NYPD detective, as he orders the police to shut down the 21 river crossing bridges of Manhattan to find two cop killers. Kate Hudson is taking the court with Mindy Kaling and Netflix.
Hudson is set to star in a comedy series inspired by Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss (who’s also an executive producer on the project) and the family business that is the NBA franchise. Netflix gave the project a straight to series order in June 2021 — more than 2 1/2 years ago.
Hudson will play Isla Gordon, the only sister in a family of competitive brothers. Isla has been underappreciated her whole life, but when a scandal forces her brother to resign as president of the Los Angeles Waves pro basketball team, she’s appointed president and gets the chance to prove she deserves to be part of the family business.

Portal A has revealed nine projects it is developing as part of its $500,000 investment in experimental content. The digital-savvy production company is backing an eclectic mix of digital programs through the Moonshots program it introduced this past February.
Several of the projects in the Portal A slate will utilize emerging technologies like AI and short-form video. Nightmare Fuel, for example, is a TikTok series that will combine horror stories with AI-generated audio and visuals.
By embracing experimentation, Portal A’s Moonshots unit is taking the company “back to its innovative roots,” according to Portal A Director of Original Projects Jacob Motz. As the leader of the Moonshots program, Motz is looking to recapture the core values of a company that once produced global video game contests, upside-down cooking tutorials and shot-for-shot remakes of Abba music videos. (Portal A also produced the year-end Rewind videos alongside YouTube.)

Actors with one outstanding performance can make a lasting impact, showcasing the profound influence of a singular role on their legacy. For example, Kate Hudson's portrayal of Penny Lane in Almost Famous exemplifies her acting prowess and arguably remains her best movie role to this day. Another example is Hayden Christensen's performance in Shattered Glass, which stands out among his other roles and remains his best movie role.
Actors who have only delivered one outstanding performance in their movie careers are a testament to the unpredictability of artistic journeys in the film industry. An actor having just one exemplary performance under their belt doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad at what they do, quite the contrary. It just means that they haven't outdone themselves in that particular role, the reason for which can boil down to a number of factors in the highly collaborative world of filmmaking.

Lupita Nyong’o and others took to social media on Monday to honor the late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman on the third anniversary of his death.
The “12 Years a Slave” Oscar winner shared on her Instagram a personal black and white image of Boseman at an airport in South Korea from 2018, reflecting that she felt “a singular pain” at the news of his death three years ago and remembering that “the confusion was so profound that it took months to trust the feeling of joy again.”
But the post wasn’t meant for Nyong’o to mourn; instead, she celebrated his life and the joys that they shared together.
“This is a photo I took on film at the airport as we arrived in South Korea in 2018. We had just learned to do the baby heart with our fingers. Here Chadwick was adding his suave flare,” she wrote. “We spent a glorious 72 hours there,...

“I fell in love with her,” declares Gbemisola Ikumelo about portraying fan-favorite character Chance Morgan on “A League of Their Own.” For our recent webchat she adds, “A lot of it was in the writing. She jumps off the page and you just go, ‘don’t screw it up, it’s all here!’ But also, there’s a real freedom given to us on set to play and to improvise and to go, ‘Ok, this take is for you guys to mess around, so I think in playing, you’re finding other layers for the character. I didn’t think she was funny. Actually, I wasn’t setting out to play this comic role. But when it’s improvised and you get to see what the bond looks like between two friends, it is funny and you come into the world of in-jokes between two friends, but your audience become...

Tom Shadyac's 1997 comedy film "Liar Liar" had a light supernatural concept: Fletcher Reed, a typical Hollywood Workholic Dad constantly lies to his family and clients in order to succeed in life. As a lawyer, lying is handy. As a father, however, lying gets him in trouble with his five-year-old son, Max (Justin Cooper). As such, the child makes a birthday wish, longing that his dad cannot lie for just one day. The wish comes true.
What follows is a comedic showcase for star Jim Carrey to put his talents for physical comedy on display. The actor hilariously mugs and thrashes about in agony as Fletcher's newfound truthfulness gets him in various amounts of trouble. In one case, he cannot lie to exonerate a dishonest client. In another, he says openly lascivious things to a woman on the elevator. He gets slapped in the face and even arrested for his comments.

New York is poised to dramatically increase its film tax incentive from $420 million a year to $700 million, as it looks to stave off competition from New Jersey and Georgia.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an agreement Thursday night on a $229 billion budget, after weeks of negotiations with state lawmakers.
Among many other provisions, the budget will increase the size of the film tax credit program, as well as raise the credit percentage from 25% to 30%, bringing it in line with rival states. The program will also be extended to 2034, according to a source familiar with the conceptual agreement.
The agreement with lawmakers will allow productions to receive a tax credit on above-the-line costs — salaries for actors, directors, writers and producers. The state previously offered credit only for below-the-line costs. The above-the-line costs will be capped, though it is not yet certain at what level.

The alums of Love Is Blind are giving their opinions about season 4. Here is why Natalie Lee questions whether Micah Lussier and Paul Peden are truly more than friends.
Micah Lussier and Paul Peden get engaged on ‘Love Is Blind’ Season 4 Paul and Micah | Cr. Netflix
There were complicated love triangles in season 4. Micah became close with Paul and Kwame Appiah. Paul was strongly considering Micah and Amber Wilder. But in the end, Micah and Paul got engaged.
They went to the honeymoons with the other couples, and things got awkward. Kwame was there engaged to Chelsea Griffin, and it didn’t seem like the feelings between him and Micah were over.
“I really do care about you as a person and the connection we made,” Micah told him. “I still think about you. I hope the best for you. I don’t know. I just want you to be happy.

Carson urged the women of the world to “give themselves an applause” during the simple, stark performance of the ballad.
Carson wore a bejeweled gown over a bodysuit, as seen in silhouette in the spotlight at the Dolby Theatre, and walked over to the piano at song’s conclusion to embrace the much-decorated Warren, who accompanied the vocal performance in a white suit, reports Variety.
Prior to her collaboration with Warren, Carson starred in Disney’s ‘Descendants’ and contributed to the franchise’s three soundtracks. Since ‘Descendants’, she starred in the hit Netflix summer flick, ‘Purple Hearts’ and recorded eight original songs for the romance film.

Actor-turned-filmmaker Alex Winter (Showbiz Kids) has set the murder mystery The Adults, starring Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), Josh Gad (Avenue 5) and Anthony Carrigan (Barry), as his next project behind the camera, with plans to also act in the pic.
The film penned by novelist Michael M.B. Galvin — who has previously adapted his own works Fat Kid Rules the World and Freak Talks About Sex for the big screen — follows siblings Megan (Wood) and Nathan (Gad), who are barely hanging on in present-day America, like all of us. Their lives are completely upended when they discover a dead body, long buried in their parent’s basement, sending them down a rabbit hole of crime and murder.
Winter will produce alongside Scott Kroopf of Many Rivers Productions and Russell Hollander, with Connie Tavel serving as exec producer.

Harrison Ford gets candid about Jason Segel's past nude scene, offering some funny praise for his Shrinking co-star. In the Apple TV+ comedy from Segel and Ted Lasso collaborators Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, Segel plays a therapist who can barely keep his life together after the death of his wife. Ten episodes into production of the Apple TV+ grief comedy Shrinking, co-creator Brett Goldstein insists the cast and crew were still asking, “How the fuck is Harrison Ford here?” In truth, Goldstein (aka Roy Kent of Ted Lasso) has often wondered it too, incredulous that the Indiana Jones star agreed to make his comedy debut in the small-screen ensemble rolling out Jan. 27. But there he is, playing a gruff shrink opposite Jason Segel’s grieving, widowed therapist in the half-hour series from Segel, Goldstein and his former Ted Lasso showrunner Bill Lawrence. The trio — Segel and Goldstein in person, Lawrence later by phone — joined THR in late January to preview the show that’s as likely to make viewers laugh as it is to make them cry.
Like many good ideas, I’ve read that this one was hatched at a London pub. Is that right?
Bill Lawrence It started even before that.

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

Responsible for arguably two of the best horror films of the 21st century in Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Neil Marshall’s name used to be synonymous with, at the very least, a bloody good time. More recently though – since his brief foray into TV, helming huge episodes of Game of Thrones, Westworld and the like – his features haven’t so much taken a bit of a knock as they’ve fallen off a cliff. The one-two of 2019’s dire Hellboy reboot, and 2020’s even-more-dire witch drama The Reckoning well and truly knocked his name out of favour for many. And whilst his latest – good old fashioned monster mash The Lair – is definitely a swing in the right direction for the director, it’s unlikely it’ll win him any new fans.

John Sturges' 1963 war epic "The Great Escape," based on true events surrounding a massive prison break from a Polish Nazi P.O.W. camp during World War II, climaxes with one of the more famous stunts in cinema history. After having escaped from the camp, American soldier Captain Virgil Hilts (Steve McQueen) boosts a motorcycle and leads his Nazi pursuers on a glorious chase through the German countryside toward the Swiss border. According to cinema lore, and confirmed in Marshall Terrill's 2020 biography "Steve McQueen: In His Own Words," many of the shots in that final chase are of McQueen himself. McQueen was an avid motorcyclist, and was given permission to ride his very own 650 cc Triumph TR6 Trophy on camera for "The Great Escape." Thanks to the magic of editing, McQueen also played one of his own motorcycle-mounted Nazi pursuers in the same sequence.
