This is the third and final installment of Tomm Moore's "Irish Folklore Trilogy", following his previous films The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014).
According to an interview with IndieWire, the "Wolf Vision" scenes were pre-visualized and built in a virtual reality environment. Rather than simply keeping those scenes to the virtual reality engine, the animators printed out the 3D model frame-by-frame and re-animated all of it on paper with charcoal and pencil. This gives the scenes a uniquely three-dimensional feel while still being hand-drawn.
The story is set in Kilkenny, Ireland, which is where Cartoon Saloon itself is located. The Wolfwalkers were inspired by legends of the Werewolves of Ossory, which director Tomm Moore learned about while growing up in Kilkenny himself.
Mebh's second name in Irish, Óg MacTíre, translates literally into English as "young (Óg) son (Mac) of the land (Tíre)". However, MacTíre is the Irish word for wolf. Robyn Goodfellowe is named after Robin Goodfellow from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream".
It became the first animated feature to be nominated for "Best International Feature" at the Gotham Awards.
