Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be Doctor Doom's long-awaited introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the film would be wise to pay close attention to how they handle the hypeworthy supervillain. For years, Doctor Doom has been one of the most hotly-anticipated Marvel Comics character to be introduced into the MCU, and for good reason. As such an iconic villain, how Marvel Studios handles Doom's introduction in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will be critically important for the franchise's future.
There are several things the MCU will need to do in order to make Doctor Doom truly work in the setting. Many of them may be hindered by Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Doctor Doom, which presents several possible pitfalls the franchise will need to be aware of. Hopefully, the MCU can make Doom a critically-successful villain that does his comic counterpart justice, like Thanos, rather than...

Chris Evans, whose name is used pretty synonymously with Steve Rogers aka the original and former Captain America of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently perked up to share his favorite movie that he has been a part of from the multi-billionaire comics-based universe. And as surprising as it may be, this one film that he holds dearest is not Avengers: Endgame or Infinity War.
Chris Evans in Avengers Infinity War
Instead, Chris Evans’ choice goes way back in time to when his career and character were more or less only starting to take shape and height in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And no, it isn’t Captain America: The First Avenger either. Rather, it is the $712 million grossing film from MCU’s Phase 2 of The Infinity Saga — Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).

If you’re going to make a movie about fighters, you can’t skimp on the details. So says Talia Shire, an actress who knows a thing or two about the genre.
“You notice everything,” Shire said during an interview with IndieWire. “I am terribly aware of [everything]. If you’re going to do a fighting movie, I’m looking at the scars.”
Shire noticed just that when she first came across “Kingdom.” Now, the actress who earned Oscar nominations for her two iconic turns in “Rocky” and “The Godfather: Part II,” has joined the cast of the Audience Network original series — with just three episodes remaining.

While all great stories need one helluva ending to put them over the top, murder mysteries are particularly reliant on the final reveal. Those final moments don’t have to be overly twisty or even surprising. The ending doesn’t need to reinvent the genre or go out of the way to be different. The final unveiling just needs to satisfy the story that preceded it — which, usually, is about more than just solving the mystery. Heck, sometimes there doesn’t even need to be a murder — but we’ll get to that.

When it comes to the Coppola family, there’s no shortage of talent. From composer and patriarch Carmine Coppola to his son, director Francis Ford Coppola, and various grandchildren, filmmakers Sofia and Roman Coppola, Jason and Robert Schwartzman and actor Nicolas Cage (né Coppola), and even the youngest generation, including musician Weston Coppola Cage and filmmaker Gia Coppola. The family has earned over 20 Academy Award nominations and nine wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score.
While talent certainly bonds them, it’s the music in their genes that unites them. “We come from a musical family,” Roman Coppola tells Et, referring to his late grandfather, Carmine Coppola, an Oscar-winning composer and flautist, and his great uncle, composer and conductor Anton Coppola, who at 99 years old is actively preparing a new concert for March of 2017. “We have a rich history of music being a tradition in our family,” which extends...

Though Robert Schwartzman is arguably best known for being the lead vocalist in the rock band Rooney, he’s recently made his directorial debut with the comedy-drama “Dreamland,” which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this past April. The film follows Monty Fagan (Johnny Simmons), a down-on-his luck musician who lives in his girlfriend’s mother’s house and listlessly plays piano in a swanky hotel bar. Monty soon begins an affair with Olivia (Amy Landecker), a wealthy older woman looking for a little excitement, but eventually Monty begins to lose his sense of self amidst the romance. It boasts an all-star supporting cast, including Jason Schwartzman (“Rushmore”), Noël Wells (“Master of None”), Alan Ruck (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”), Beverly D’Angelo (“Coal Miner’s Daughter”), Talia Shire (“Rocky”) and more. Watch an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette below that delves into the making of the film.

Making your directorial debut is never easy, but there’s got to be even more pressure involved when you’re Robert Schwartzman. Best known as the as the lead vocalist of the pop-rock band Rooney, Schwartzman’s ties to the film world run deep: His uncle is Francis Ford Coppola, his brother is Jason Schwartzman and his cousins are Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola and Gia Coppola. Talk about a major shadow to step out of. Fortunately, Robert does so with “Dreamland,” a charming and inventive musical riff on the Mrs. Robinson story.

It seems like there will be no shortage of Los Angeles-set features about musicians trying to follow their dreams this fall. Before La La Land arrives in December, we have Dreamland, another independent drama that seems a touch less romantic. Directed by Robert Schwartzman, it follows Johnny Simmons as a down-and-out pianist trying to make it work in the City of Angels.
Ahead of a release next week, the first trailer has now arrived for the film that premiered earlier this year at Tribeca. We’ve been impressed by Simmons in Scott Pilgrim, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, 21 Jump Street, and even Whiplash (the short), so hopefully a leading role suits him well here. Check out the trailer and soundtrack preview below for the film also starring Amy Landecker, Jason Schwartzman, Frankie Shaw, Noël Wells, Beverly D’Angelo, and Talia Shire.

Co-writing and directing a movie is hard enough, but Rooney frontman Robert Schwartzman has taken it up a notch. Not only did he pen an original song for “Dreamland,” but Rooney has contributed new material, and Schwartzman curated the entire soundtrack, and today we have some exclusive cuts for you to hear.
Starring Johnny Simmons, Amy Landecker, Jason Schwartzman, Frankie Shaw, Noël Wells, Beverly D’Angelo, and Talia Shire, the story centers on young, struggling musician Monty Fagan who dreams of opening a piano bar, but doesn’t have the money to make it happen.

"Sometimes you just have to take a step back and really contemplate what it is that you're doing..." Orion Pictures has released a trailer for an indie comedy directed by a composer titled Dreamland, set in Los Angeles about an aspiring pianist who wants to open a piano bar. This plot may sound familiar, as it's pretty much what Ryan Gosling's character wants in La La Land. But these are two very different films, and this one has its own charms. Dreamland stars Johnny Simmons as Monty, who gets into trouble when he falls into a romantic affair with an older wealthy woman who is willing to help him fund his dream. The full cast includes Amy Landecker, Jason Schwartzman, Frankie Shaw, Beverly D'Angelo, Noël Wells, Talia Shire, Shay Mitchell and Nick Thune. I actually quite like the way this looks, nice indie vibe to it. Here's the...

The city of dreams is going to be the focus of youthful aspiration this fall at the movies. The story follows three border patrol agents, rookie Davis (Johnny Simmons), seasoned Flores (Gabriel Luna) and callous, world-weary Hobbs (Clifton Collins Jr), who man a check point on a remote highway. On what feels like another routine stop, the contents of one car suddenly throws their lives out of control. For a film that’s nominally a sports movie, there’s something conspicuously absent from “The Phenom”: teammates. Instead, writer-director Noah Buschel carves out the time usually spent on building camaraderie and team-based drama to hone in on a single player. Without that team as the go-to filter to understand this talented-but-struggling pitcher, what follows in “The Phenom” is an atypical meditation on what it means to succeed on stages great and small.
Johnny Simmons stars as Hopper Gibson, a young righthander consigned to a rehab assignment after his lack of control derails a promising career. His team enlists the help of Dr. Mobley (Paul Giamatti), a renowned sports psychologist, to help unlock the mental secret to restoring Hopper to winning ways. While Hopper and Mobley philosophize over the nature of mental blocks, Buschel intersperses scenes from the player’s past family turmoil and struggles as a high school standout.

The 2016 Tribeca Film Festival saw its fair share of first time filmmakers as well as returning and well experienced actors and directors. In an eclectic ensemble of actors, writers and directors, The Phenom stars Ethan Hawke and Paul Giamatti as they play the father and psychiatrist respectively of a rookie pitcher who loses his A game. Johnny Simmons stars as that pitcher, while Yul Vazquez plays his coach.
Performance anxiety, a pretty bad father, and relationship issues. What can go wrong, especially if you’re playing in front of hundreds of thousands of people who aren’t quiet about their boos? They demote you, and that’s exactly what happens to Hopper Gibson (Simmons) a rookie pitcher who gets demoted to the Little Leagues after completely losing his game.
The film was written and directed by Noah Buschel, who also wrote and directed Glass Chin, nominated for 2014 Tribeca’s Best Narrative Feature.

It seems almost inevitable that Rooney frontman, Coppola scion, and Jason Schwartzman brother Robert Schwartzman would eventually make a movie, and he makes his directorial debut with an earnest, musically themed take on the Mrs. Robinson myth with “Dreamland." Co-written with Benjamin Font, the film stars the endearing, almost cherubic Johnny Simmons as Monty Fagan, a struggling piano player who becomes entangled with an older lover/benefactress, Olivia (Amy Landecker), while trying to sort out his life. Monty, peddling piano lessons for $25 bucks a pop, dreams of opening his own piano bar, but he settles for a replacement gig filling in at the swanky La Petit Bel Ami hotel. It’s where he meets Olivia, an older woman who actually wants to have sex with him, unlike his longtime girlfriend Lizzie (Frankie Shaw). Their mojo has fizzled, partially thanks to her mom (Beverly D’Angelo), whom they live with. So when Olivia turns up,...

Not your run-of-the-mill future film festival selection, filmmakers Gael García Bernal (Déficit), Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur), Sebastián Silva (Nasty Baby), Shion Sono (Suicide Club), Natasha Khan and actress Mia Wasikowska each supplied a short supply with one overriding thematic that was commissioned by MTV World. While Madly doesn’t “scream” Sundance, we can’t help but think that the curious mix of filmmakers (including Park City habituals Silva and Bernal) adds enough clout to warrant a possible inclusion.

Equal measures irritably supercilious and demonically brilliant, our introduction to this filmmaker came via his co-writing gig: 2004’s I Heart Huckabees. Fast forward a decade later, and Jeff Baena broke into Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic section with zom rom com (short of zombie romantic comedy). Starring girlfriend Aubrey Plaza, Life After Beth wasn’t as secretive as his follow up film. Not appearing on any radars, production wrapped up on Joshy in April, so this comedy is definitely ready to go out. List of players includes: Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, Alex Ross Perry, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, Jenny Slate, Lauren Graham, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Swanberg, Kris Swanberg, Alison Brie, Paul Weitz, Brian Patrick Farrell, Jake Johnson and Frankie Shaw.
