The 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards delivered the expected TV nominees on Wednesday and some truly wild surprises. Emmy and Golden Globe champ Shōgun led the way with five nominations, including for stunt ensemble, as it is on track to complete its awards season sweep. Fellow Emmy and Globe winner Hacks nabbed two nominations in comedy, while top rival The Bear scored four. But then there were not one but two individual nominations for Kathy Bates, a Bridgerton resurgence, and a Squid Game shutout. Here are nine takeaways from Tuesday’s nominations.

1. Bridgerton is back

The regency hit scored two nominations, for drama ensemble and actress for Nicola Coughlan, neither of which were forecasted in the odds. It was in 18th place in ensemble, and Coughlan was in 12th. In hindsight, we should’ve taken Bridgerton way more seriously — and perhaps we would’ve had it aired in the fall instead of the spring and summer.

As we wait for the third Downton Abbey movie and the third season of The Gilded Age, you might be wondering if both titles exist in the same universe.

In a new interview, an executive producer from The Gilded Age, who also worked on Downton Abbey, addressed whether or not there’s a connection between the two shows.

The HBO series takes place in the late 1800s at the start of the American Gilded Age, three decades before the events of Downton Abbey. The two TV shows also come from the same creator, Julian Fellowes, and feature tons of upstairs/downstairs drama.

The Pitt (January 9) Credit – Max

The Pitt is an upcoming medical drama series created by R. Scott Gemmill. The Max series is set in the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, and it follows the medical staff during their 15-hour emergency room shift. The Pitt stars Noah Wyle, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Katherine Lanasa.

The Jackal is targeting NBC: The broadcast network will air the first episode of the Peacock series The Day of the Jackal on Monday, Dec. 30, at 10/9c.

Exclusive: Julian Fellowes is going from crimes of high society to real crimes. The Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age creator is set to write and executive produce a TV adaptation of Swiss-American author Donna Leon’s contemporary Detective Brunetti book series, which is in development at 20th Television.

The project was originated and set up at the studio by Fellowes’ longtime friend and mentor, producer Ileen Maisel who died in February at the age of 68. She had been in the 20th Television fold since 2018 when she signed a first-look deal with its former division Fox21.

Maisel will be credited as an executive producer on the Brunetti series alongside writer Fellowes, Gesine Lubben, Pk Fellowes and Lawrence Elman. Author Leon will co-executive produce. Playwright Felix Legge will serve as co-writer and producer.

Klein, who first joined Utv in 2011, has increased representation in front of the camera through her work, which included Jason Katims’ “As We See It,” which centered around three roommates on the autism spectrum, and David Schulner’s “New Amsterdam,” with characters often portrayed by actors living with the actual illnesses featured in the storylines.

On the bright side, there aren't that many popular HBO and Max shows that will be on the chopping block in 2025. Many of the established shows, like The White Lotus, should have blanket renewals. As long as the creators have a story to tell, they should be easily renewed.

Let's get this unfortunate list of HBO and Max in danger of getting canceled next year!

Gareth Neame, whose Carnival Films shepherded “Downton Abbey” to international success, “could not have anticipated” that the British period drama would not only become a worldwide hit, but launch a successful film franchise, with a third film due September 2025.

But Carnival’s success isn’t limited to the moonshot of “Downton”: The British powerhouse, which sold to NBCUniversal in 2008, just launched “The Day of the Jackal” with Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch for Sky/Peacock and has the upcoming dramas “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” starring Colin Firth, and the hotly anticipated “All Her Fault,” Sarah Snook’s first series since “Succession” wrapped.

Hulu’s first trailer for Paradise shows Oscar nominee Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) as a Secret Service agent suspected of assassinating the U.S. President. The first trailer arrived along with the official poster for the drama, which is set to premiere on January 28, 2025 with the release of the first three episodes.

New episodes will stream on Tuesdays.

The two-minute clip (watch it below) contains footage from more than two-dozen series set to premiere in the final weeks of this year and in 2025. You might think that The Gilded Age, HBO's mannered period drama about feather-light conflict between members of the upper crust in 1880s New York City, doesn't have anything in common with Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys where college students get their heads lasered off by sociopathic superheroes. And you'd be right...except for one thing: both of them are greatly expanding their casts ahead of their new seasons: that's season 3 for The Gilded Age and season 2 for Gen V.

The Gilded Age season 3 has added multiple new cast members for the upcoming season. The costume drama delves into New York City's high society of the 1880s, where the Russell family experiences friction with the van Rhijn family. The HBO series kicked off in the beginning of 2022, and had a follow-up season last year. The Gilded Age season 3 is currently in development and is set for release sometime in 2025. The series features a leading cast including Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denee Benton, Taissa Farmiga, and Harry Richardson.

Netflix led the nominations for the Artios Awards, which were announced by the Casting Society (CSA) on Friday. Now in its 40th year, the awards honor achievements of casting professionals across 22 categories, mainly devoted to TV and streaming.

“Ripley,” “Baby Reindeer” and “The Crown” were among Netflix’s 17 nominations, more than doubling its haul of eight nods in 2023. The streamer’s 2024 total is nearly triple the number of second place finisher HBO/Max (with 6 nominations). Prime Video, Apple TV+ and FX each received 5.

Two new categories – Casting for International Film and Casting for International Television Series – were also announced this year. Additionally, the Atrios Awards honor casting for theater, both Broadway and regional plays and musicals. The organization’s nominees for feature films will be announced in January. Exclusive: The Broadway revival of Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal has added to the cast with Andrew Burnap, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and Kimber Elayne Sprawl (Girl from the North Country).

The four will play, respectively, Cassio, Roderigo, Brabantio and Emilia. They’ll join the previously announced Washington, who plays Othello, Gyllenhaal (Iago) and Molly Osborne (Desdemona).

She told Variety, “Right now we’re on a one-year deal. So I’m optimistic that we could get another year.
