Cillian Murphy has had quite the career since he first appeared in the 1997 short film Quando. He would rise to prominence in the 2000’s by appearing in Danny Boyle’s post apocalyptic zombie tale 28 Days Later before finding even more success being one of Christopher Nolan’s go to guys in films such as Batman Begins and Inception. It would be that collaboration that would give Murphy his biggest leading roles yet in the massively successful Oppenheimer, a film that will hopefully see Murphy’s name on the short list for Best Actor during this years Awards season. So with quite the Pre-Oppenheimer resume, we wanted to know what film starring the Irish born actor has been your favorite. As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, click other and let us know in the comments. We kept films like Tron: Legacy, Dark Knight and Dark Knight...

There's something special about Thomas Shelby that makes him so intimidating to people, and commands their attention. Is it a credit to his flattering three-piece suit and newsboy cap concealing a razor blade? His menacing strut or the unmissable aura of danger and unpredictability? The years of hard work put in by actor Cillian Murphy? Or is it a combination of all of them?
To play a character for as long as Murphy has played Thomas Shelby in the acclaimed gangster drama "Peaky Blinders" is no easy feat. The Irish actor has worked hard to maintain Tommy's enigmatic, imposing figure and has spent hours perfecting his gruff Birmingham accent. Murphy has portrayed Tommy for a decade; he has grown with the character in real-time, allowing it to drive him during his performance, permitting it to have a life of its own. As superhero movies become increasingly interconnected, Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy already feels like a relic of a bygone era. It was a trilogy that stood entirely on its own. You didn't need to watch any other DC films to understand what was going on, nor did the movies end up needing to be watched to understand later DC films. We simply got three solid movies that took themselves seriously while still being entertaining. Whereas pretty much everyone's suffering from at least a little Marvel fatigue at this point (with their multiple movies and tv shows per year), every single "Dark Knight" film — released three to four years apart — felt like a proper event.
For Cillian Murphy, who played Jonathon Crane (aka Scarecrow) in all three movies, there's another key difference that separates these films from the superhero movies of today: none of the characters have superpowers. "It's a slightly heightened level of storytelling,...

On Monday, Spider-Man: No Way Home crawled its way past Avatar’s $760.5 million to become the third highest domestic grosser of all time. With that milestone reached, the baton is ready to be passed to Sony’s Uncharted, the long-awaited video game adaptation that also gives Tom Holland his biggest role yet outside of the MCU. The adventure film, which co-stars Mark Wahlberg, should spark things up at the box office after what has been a soft start to the year.
Ruben Fleischer directs Uncharted after having successfully launched the Venom franchise for Sony (not to mention hitting the jackpot with the Zombieland films). The Indiana Jones-esque tale acts as a prequel to the games, telling the story of a young version of Nathan Drake (played by Holland) before he becomes the full-fledged, world-class treasure hunting hero. He is taken under the wing of Sully (Wahlberg) to find the...

It picks up in the late 1800s and watches as a once-peaceful remote country village comes under attack—by who or what, no one knows. Villagers spread rumors of a cursed land, supernatural forces, and even demonic creatures, as the disappearances and killings continue. But when pathologist John McBride (Holbrook) arrives to investigate the danger, he comes to discover something much deeper and more sinister than he ever could have imagined.

Horror has many dimensions still to be explored, says Dp, director and writer Sean Ellis in describing his film screening in the Camerimage Film Festival’s main competition, “Eight for Silver.”
A dark and brooding story of evil’s long tail, the film is Ellis’ fifth feature since an impressive debut with the surreal “Cashback” in 2006 and follows his Prague-shot true-story thriller “Anthropoid,” a remarkably detailed and accurate account of the most successful assassination plot of World War II against a top Nazi commander, Reinhard Heydrich.
“Eight for Silver” opens theatrically in the U.S. next spring or summer and is also set in the past, on a French country estate where a different kind of overlord tempts fate with evil deeds. But in this case the veil of time allows for an immersive world in which curses, monsters and possession come around to ensure a terrifying dose of karmic payback.

“The Seventh Function of Language,” a novel by French author Laurent Binet, is getting the feature film treatment. Uri Singer, the CEO of TaleFlick, a production company that specializes in adapting books into movies and TV shows, has obtained screen rights to the popular work of fiction.
Singer will produce “The Seventh Function of Language” with Midnight Road Entertainment’s Vincent Sieber, who previously produced “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
The New York Times described Binet’s novel as being “at once a buddy-cop plot, a fish-out-of-water comedy and a spy thriller.” A whodunit set against the backdrop of 1980s France, “The Seventh Function of Language” centers on a literary critic Roland Barthes, who gets hit by a laundry van and dies after having lunch with the presidential candidate François Mitterand. But as the world mourns his death, one question arises: What if it wasn’t an accident at all?

When the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States, Jamie Dornan was in New York, about to shoot a new TV series.
But as production shut down on “Dr. Death,” the 37-year-old actor flew back to his home in England, where he’s been in self-isolation with his wife and three children.
Dornan, the star of the “Fifty Shades” franchise, recently joined Instagram, posting a funny video with his face covered in blue paint for an upcoming role — a leap for a normally private person. This week, he’s been getting ready for the release of his latest film, “Endings, Beginnings,” a drama directed by Drake Doremus, which debuted at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival.
In the movie, Dorman plays an Irish writer smitten by a woman (Shailene Woodley) that both he and his best friend (Sebastian Stan) meet at a party. “Endings, Beginnings” is now available in homes on digital.

David Ondříček’s “Zátopek,” a biopic about Olympic champion athlete Emil Zátopek, has wrapped filming. The film stars Václav Neužil, Martha Issová and James Frecheville, who starred in Sundance prize-winner “Animal Kingdom.”

In the film, Zátopek is seen as someone who inspires other athletes around the world. One of those is Australian record-breaker Ron Clarke – played by Frecheville – who unexpectedly loses what was probably his last chance at an Olympic medal after collapsing in a key race.

The Cured stars Ellen Page (Hard Candy, 2005), Sam Keeley (Anthropoid, 2016) and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor. A preview of the film's upcoming launch is hosted here. The trailer for The Cured is quite revealing. Senan is still a host to a strange infection. But, his violent tendencies have been thwarted. He is sent out into the community, to live with his sister-in-law. Here, he must face the results of his previous murderous actions. Then, as seen in the trailer, all hell breaks loose - across the city. IFC Films has set February 23rd as the release date.

MaryAnn’s quick take… The living, breathing, bleeding life of the breathtaking fight scenes cannot overcome confusingly twisty spy intrigue and multiple male gazes on the story. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; love spy stuff
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Berlin, 1989. The Wall is about to fall, but the Cold War isn’t over yet. MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron: The Fate of the Furious, Kubo and the Two Strings) is sent in to retrieve a missing list of all spies and operatives on all sides, if she can find it before the Soviets do. It’s an “atomic bomb of information,” not least because the list includes the identity of a double agent known as Satchel. Atomic Blonde — I guess because she’s so hot?...

The assassination — by two men of the Czechoslovak Resistance — of Reinhard Heydrich, the leader of Czechoslovakia under Nazi occupation, head of the Sicherheitsdienst and the brains behind the Final Solution, was the subject of films by both Fritz Lang and Douglas Sirk that were released in 1943, only a year after the events occurred. Something similar seems to be happening again now, almost 75 years later, with Sean Ellis' Anthropoid released last year (headlined by Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan and Toby Jones) and now the arrival of The Man With the Iron Heart (HHhH) from French director Cedric...

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan seem to have a taste for the war movie after their time together on last year’s Anthropoid. The pair are teaming up yet again for Jim Sheridan’s H-Block which also has Pierce Brosnan locked in talks to join the project.
Related: Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan on Anthropoid
H-Block will be based on the true story of the Maze Prison escape, which was known as The Great Escape when the story broke in Northern Ireland. Murphy stars as the head of the ring of Ira prisoners who has earned the respect of the prison guards but now just wants a life of peace. Dornan takes on a role in which many of his adoring female fans will not be used to seeing from the Fifty Shades actor. He will be playing an Ira Prisoner who starts discovering weaknesses in the prison.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A 90-minute shootout that never makes us care who lives and who dies. In attempting to send up a cinematic cliché, this only becomes a tedious example of same. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): increasingly not a fan of Ben Wheatley

Eight people walk into an abandoned warehouse in Boston in 1978. There’s Chris (Cillian Murphy: Anthropoid, In the Heart of the Sea), whom we can presume is Ira because he has an Irish accent and he’s there to buy enough guns to supply a small army. There’s Justine (Brie Larson: Kong: Skull Island, Room), who has brokered the deal with Ord (Armie Hammer: The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Entourage)… or is it Ord who has brokered the deal with seller Vernon (Sharlto Copley: Chappie,...

World War II’s Operation Anthropoid has always seemed to be tailor-made for the cinema. Not only is ‘anthropoid’ a really cool sounding word, but a mission to assassinate a high-ranking Nazi that concludes with just lobbing an anti-tank grenade at his car sounds intrinsically awesome. And so we come to HHhH, the English-language debut of French director Cédric Jimenez which dramatizes the mission and whose international trailer has just been released.
Starring Jack O’Connell, Jack Raynor, Rosamund Pike, Jason Clarke and Mia Wasikowska, this preview makes the film look like a slightly less stylized Inglourious Basterds, featuring an exciting looking church-based firefight, lots of behind-the-scenes Nazi villainy, and oodles of apocalyptic fascist speech-making. As far as Naziploitation films go it doesn’t look half bad, though it’s hamstrung by what is, in my opinion, one of the worst titles for a movie I’ve ever seen. Not only is HHhH essentially un-Googleable,...
