The film awards will take place on Jan. 4, 2024, with the festival running through Jan. 15.

Bleecker Street has picked up the U.S. rights to the sci-fi thriller I.S.S., directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and starring Ariana DeBose and John Gallagher Jr.

The space pic, written by Nick Shafir and produced by Ld Entertainment, marks Bleecker Street’s second collaboration with Cowperthwaite after the 2017 biographical drama Megan Leavey. Bleecker Street, which plans a nationwide theatrical release for I.S.S., also previously teamed with Ld on Sean Ellis’ Anthropoid and Max Minghella’s Teen Spirit.

I.S.S. had a world premiere at the Tribeca Festival and has an ensemble cast that includes Chris Messina, Pilou Asbæk, Costa Ronin and Masha Mashkova. The coming-of-age tale, handled by Memento International, marks the feature debut of Le Bon, an actor-turned-filmmaker who notably starred in Sean Ellis’s “Anthropoid,” Lasse Hallström’s “The Hundred Foot Journey” and Terry George’s “The Promise.”

“Falcon Lake” follows two teenagers, Bastien and Chloé, who spend their summer vacation with their families at a lake cabin in Quebec which is haunted by a ghost legend. The film will open on February 18 more than a year after it premiered at Sundance. Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly and Alistair Petrie star in the story set in the late 19th century about a pathologist who arrives at a remote country village plagued by killings and rumours of a curse.

Princ Films has taken international rights to Slávek Horák’s “Havel,” a biopic about the Czech playwright, dissident and his country’s president Vaclav Havel, and will launch sales at the European Film Market.

The film recently received 14 nominations for the Czech Lion Awards, the leading Czech film awards, across all major categories including film, director, screenplay, and all acting categories. It also received two nominations for the Czech Film Critics’ Awards, best actor and actress.

“Havel” premiered at the Visegrad Cinema Days, run by the Kyiv Film Festival in the Ukraine, and went onto play a slew of festivals including Heartland (Indiana), where it was a finalist for best narrative feature, Montreal Independent, where Horák won best director, Rome Independent, where it won best feature, Warsaw, Tallinn Black Nights, São Paulo, Cottbus and Zagreb.

“The Seventh Function of Language,” a novel by French author Laurent Binet, is getting the feature film treatment. Uri Singer, the CEO of TaleFlick, a production company that specializes in adapting books into movies and TV shows, has obtained screen rights to the popular work of fiction.

Singer will produce “The Seventh Function of Language” with Midnight Road Entertainment’s Vincent Sieber, who previously produced “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

The New York Times described Binet’s novel as being “at once a buddy-cop plot, a fish-out-of-water comedy and a spy thriller.” A whodunit set against the backdrop of 1980s France, “The Seventh Function of Language” centers on a literary critic Roland Barthes, who gets hit by a laundry van and dies after having lunch with the presidential candidate François Mitterand. But as the world mourns his death, one question arises: What if it wasn’t an accident at all?

Co-production funds to support the directorial debuts of the two actresses.

The feature directorial debuts of actresses Charlotte Le Bon and Veerle Baetens and a drama about the Bataclan terrorist attack have secured a share of €4.1m ($5m) from European cultural support fund Eurimages.

The Melting is being directed and co-written by Baetens, who is best known internationally for her performance in Felix van Groeningen’s Oscar-nominated The Broken Circle Breakdown.

The Belgium-Netherlands co-production has received €310,000 in Eurimages support, adding to a financial boost from Screen Flanders last week and the ARTEKino International Prize at the Berlinale Co-Production Market earlier this year.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States, Jamie Dornan was in New York, about to shoot a new TV series.

But as production shut down on “Dr. Death,” the 37-year-old actor flew back to his home in England, where he’s been in self-isolation with his wife and three children.

Dornan, the star of the “Fifty Shades” franchise, recently joined Instagram, posting a funny video with his face covered in blue paint for an upcoming role — a leap for a normally private person. This week, he’s been getting ready for the release of his latest film, “Endings, Beginnings,” a drama directed by Drake Doremus, which debuted at last fall’s Toronto Film Festival.

In the movie, Dorman plays an Irish writer smitten by a woman (Shailene Woodley) that both he and his best friend (Sebastian Stan) meet at a party. “Endings, Beginnings” is now available in homes on digital.

David Ondříček’s “Zátopek,” a biopic about Olympic champion athlete Emil Zátopek, has wrapped filming. The film stars Václav Neužil, Martha Issová and James Frecheville, who starred in Sundance prize-winner “Animal Kingdom.”

Ondříček, one of the most successful Czech directors working today, was selected by Variety magazine for its “10 Directors to Watch” list. His TV miniseries “Dukla 61” was nominated for a Golden Nymph at the 59th Monte-Carlo Television Festival this year.

In the film, Zátopek is seen as someone who inspires other athletes around the world. One of those is Australian record-breaker Ron Clarke – played by Frecheville – who unexpectedly loses what was probably his last chance at an Olympic medal after collapsing in a key race.

Among the new goodies coming next month is the 12th episode and season finale of horror anthology series “Into the Dark.” Out Sept. 6, the finale is called “Pure,” and is described as a female coming-of-age horror story in which a group of teenage girls perform a secret ritual at a “Purity Retreat.” When one of them begins to see a “supernatural entity,” a scary question is posed: “What is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations?” Scary indeed!

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is in talks to join John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” sequel along with Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe.

Krasinski is returning to direct the untitled sequel for Paramount. “A Quiet Place” grossed $340 million at the global box office last year. Since then, the film has won several awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Blunt in the supporting actress category.

Krasinski also wrote the screenplay with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, and the trio received a Writers Guild nomination in the original category. Paramount announced in August that it had dated the sequel to “A Quiet Place” for May 15, 2020.

Krasinski directed and starred in the story of an isolated family of four that must live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound. He’s been working on the script for the sequel with Woods and Beck and announced last month that he was directing.

During a recent conversation promoting his awards season contender, A Private War, Jamie Dornan talked about the importance of being timely, especially with this pertinent story (the first narrative film from documentarian Matthew Heineman) of journalists on the front lines of reporting and photographing major conflicts in the Middle East and around the world.

Dornan said, “Our director said something interesting very, very early on, one of the first Q&As we did about how you want your movies to be timeless and timely… even in the time from when we made it to release, it became even more timely in terms of very obvious and awful examples of the treatment of journalists, but also with respect to what’s still going on in Syria.”

Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan are in negotiations to star in directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s sci-fi thriller Synchronic. The film will be produced by David Lawson Jr. along with Moorhead and Benson for Rustic Films, with a script written by Benson. Xyz Films is handling international sales, with Xyz co-repping domestic rights with UTA.

The film follows two New Orleans paramedics (Mackie and Dornan) whose lives are ripped apart after encountering a series of horrific deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects.

Echoing the move by Sky to enter the day-and-date VOD market, Rakuten TV have announced the launch of its new project: Rakuten Cinema. The VOD company enters for the first time in the co-production and distribution field, with a distribution model based on a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release and empowering independent producers to stand head-to-head with their Hollywood counterparts.

As its first feature, Rakuten TV has selected Kaleidoscope Entertainment’s World War II action thriller, Hurricane – starring Iwan Rheon, Milo Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge) and Marcin Dorocinski. From BAFTA winning director, David Blair, Hurricane is produced by Krystian Kozlowski of Prospect 3, Matt Whyte of Stray Dogs Films and Lipsync Productions. Hurricane will be released in cinemas and digital VoD platforms in the UK simultaneously this Autumn, and tells the heroic true story of a group of crack Polish fighter pilots who helped defend British shores during the Battle of Britain.

The Cured, from director David Freyne, had its World Premiere last year. Now, this infectious styled thriller is set to release in the U.S., through IFC Films. The film takes place after a pandemic has swept the land. Some of the infected have been partially cured. Then, they are re-integrated into society, with deadly results. The Cured stars Ellen Page (Hard Candy, 2005), Sam Keeley (Anthropoid, 2016) and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor. A preview of the film's upcoming launch is hosted here. The trailer for The Cured is quite revealing. Senan is still a host to a strange infection. But, his violent tendencies have been thwarted. Game Of Thrones star Iwan Rheon has joined Milo Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge), Stefanie Martini (Crooked House), Marcin Dorocinski (Anthropoid) and Krystoff Hadek (Under The Skin) in World War Two war drama Hurricane.

Kaleidoscope will launch world sales (excluding Poland) in Toronto on the movie, which is due to begin shoot in the UK next month.

Kino Swiat has pre-bought Polish rights and is expected to mount a significant release.

David Blair, whose credits include movies Away and The Messenger and Bafta-winning TV drama The Street, will direct the feature about the Polish pilots who fought alongside the Raf during The Battle of Britain.

Produced by Prospect 3, whose credits include Dead Man’s Cards, I Against I and One Night In Istanbul, delivery is slated for Q2, 2018.

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan seem to have a taste for the war movie after their time together on last year’s Anthropoid. The pair are teaming up yet again for Jim Sheridan’s H-Block which also has Pierce Brosnan locked in talks to join the project.

H-Block will be based on the true story of the Maze Prison escape, which was known as The Great Escape when the story broke in Northern Ireland. Murphy stars as the head of the ring of Ira prisoners who has earned the respect of the prison guards but now just wants a life of peace. Dornan takes on a role in which many of his adoring female fans will not be used to seeing from the Fifty Shades actor. He will be playing an Ira Prisoner who starts discovering weaknesses in the prison.

World War II’s Operation Anthropoid has always seemed to be tailor-made for the cinema. Not only is ‘anthropoid’ a really cool sounding word, but a mission to assassinate a high-ranking Nazi that concludes with just lobbing an anti-tank grenade at his car sounds intrinsically awesome. And so we come to HHhH, the English-language debut of French director Cédric Jimenez which dramatizes the mission and whose international trailer has just been released.

Starring Jack O’Connell, Jack Raynor, Rosamund Pike, Jason Clarke and Mia Wasikowska, this preview makes the film look like a slightly less stylized Inglourious Basterds, featuring an exciting looking church-based firefight, lots of behind-the-scenes Nazi villainy, and oodles of apocalyptic fascist speech-making. As far as Naziploitation films go it doesn’t look half bad, though it’s hamstrung by what is, in my opinion, one of the worst titles for a movie I’ve ever seen.
