Veteran producer Dylan Massin (The West Wing) has been named EVP of Production for Sony Pictures Television Studios. Massin, who reports to Spts President Katherine Pope, assumes the Head of Production role from Ed Lammi, who retired in December after a 36-year career at the studio. Massin will oversee all physical production for the U.S. scripted studio, including pre-production/budgeting, production, and post-production teams.

Additionally, Spts’ SVP of Production Adam Moos has been promoted to SVP of Production and Head of Production Operations, reporting to Massin. Both Massin and Moos begin their new roles today.

Sony Pictures Television Studios has named Dylan Massin as executive vice president of production, while senior vice president of production Adam Moos has been promoted to add head of production operations to his title. Both began their new roles on Wednesday.

Massin enters the role following the December retirement of Ed Lammi, who worked at the studio for 36 years. Massin will oversee all physical production for the U.S. scripted studio, including pre-production, budgeting, production and post-production teams for development and active production slates, leading more than 30 staffers. He reports to studio president Katherine Pope.

Sony Pictures Television has promoted Andrew Plotkin to EVP of drama development for Sony Pictures Television Studios, the company announced Thursday.

After joining Spt as SVP of drama development in 2017, Plotkin takes over the role as former EVP Lauren Stein was tapped last week to become head of creative for Sony Picture Television Studios. She had been in the EVP role since 2011. In the new role, Plotkin will oversee the studios’ development of scripted drama series across platforms, and will continue to report to Stein.

Stein has been head of drama development at Sony TV since 2017. In the new role, Stein will oversee drama and comedy development, TriStar Television, international co-productions, and current programming on series in their first year of production. She will continue to report to Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope.

He will work closely with vice chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent to develop new scripted series across all platforms.

Clodfelter replaces Chris Albrecht atop Legendary TV. Albrecht, the former Starz chief, was placed on administrative leave at Legendary in October 2022 after new details emerged about the executive’s former time at HBO. The 2023 Karlovy Vary Film Festival is dedicating a decent chunk of its programming to Iranian cinema, a special retrospective section entitled ‘Another Birth: Iranian Cinema Here and Now’ showcasing nine films from the country made over the last four years.

While Iran’s recent nationwide protests, sparked in September 2022 when Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being arrested for violating Iran’s hijab law, and the brutal and widely condemned government crackdown that followed weren’t explicitly mentioned by the festival, it did say the films selected offered an “insightful testimony of the burning creativity of Iran’s artists in face of the challenging reality.”

Interestingly, outside of this retrospective and among the features screening in the Karlovy Vary’s Proxima Competition, is a film from an Iranian director that directly challenges the reality in his country, and one that was, in part, was borne out of the calls...

Directed by John Stead from a screenplay written by David Robbeson, Troubled Waters has the following synopsis: Special Agent Jennifer Beck is a intrepid FBI agent who is assigned to solve the case of a multimillionaire couple missing daughter. As the clues begin to reveal themselves, Beck, who has a secret gift of clairvoyance, tries to connect the kidnapper to the girl’s mother, who is having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

Until the great gears at Amazon start turning and give us a new Stargate series, we’ll have to make do with the classics. Fortunately, Stargate Sg-1 gave us 10 seasons, two spin-offs (three if you count Stargate Infinity... which you don’t), and two direct-to-home movies (three if you count Stargate Origins... which you don’t).

Unfortunately, unless you still have your treasured DVD box set and still have a DVD player in 2023, it can be a full-time job trying to work out where to stream Stargate Sg-1.

Directed by Melanie Orr from a screenplay by William Tyler Bell, Harm’s Way has the following synopsis: The proprietor of a women’s shelter jeopardizes the relationship between an abused mother and daughter. Darlene and her daughter Victoria seek refuge at a remote rural safe house for abused women that’s run by the strict and tough, but folksy and supportive Bea. Things turn sour when Bea proves to be a total lunatic with an especially dangerous influence on the impressionable Victoria.

Maintaining the location library of 20,000 photos is one of Illinois Film Office assistant deputy director Louis Ferrara’s favorite parts of his job. “Producers always laugh when I say that, but it’s true,” he says.

The massive quantity of location photos are categorized into various curated files so when productions have a need, the film office can readily supply whatever they desire.

“We scout locations on a regular basis to freshen up the library,” says Ferrara, noting that they also send letters to homeowners and businesses to help with continually growing the resource. There’s no time wasted when productions choose to film in Illinois, and no need to retread the same locations.

An amazing dinner scene in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, episode 4, "Forget Me Not," helped usher in a new and better direction for the show. Discovery underwent a massive shakeup at the beginning of season 3 as Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led the USS Discovery on a one-way trip into the 32nd century. Burnham arrived in the year 3188, a full year before her starship joined her, and Star Trek: Discovery season 3 dealt with the ramifications of the 23rd century Starfleet Officers voluntarily stranding themselves 930 years from home.

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 created the farthest known point in the franchise's timeline. In the 32nd century, Discovery was unshackled from its previous prequel trappings and was free to be the tip of Star Trek's spear and to blaze new canon. Star Trek: Discovery has featured some compelling antagonists over its first four seasons, as well as its fair share of villainous misfires. Originally set a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Discovery has been one of the more controversial entries in the Star Trek franchise. Discovery season 1 was notoriously shaky, as it leaned into a dark, violent tone and featured plenty of technological anachronisms. The show found its footing in the much-improved season 2, and boldly reset its premise when the titular vessel traveled to the 32nd century for season 3 and beyond.

Discovery has never been particularly defined by its villains, as most of its focus has been on its Starfleet crew like Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the Kelpien officer Saru (Doug Jones). That's not to say Discovery hasn't had some great villain turns, particularly early on when the show was still struggling to find an identity.

A potential feud between Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) was dropped by Star Trek: Discovery season 4, which was a mistake. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery-a will embark on a quest for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." It could be a far cry from Burnham and friends' dire crisis in Star Trek: Discovery season 3's finale, where Michael had to rescue her ship from Osyraa (Janet Kidder) and the Emerald Chain.

At the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, the Emerald Chain commandeered the USS Discovery with the intention of stealing the dilithium in the Verubin Nebula. But Osyraa needed Stamets, without whom Discovery's spore drive wouldn't work. Michael knew this, so she banished Stamets from Discovery, despite his pleas to allow him to jump the ship to the Nebula and rescue his family,...

“Bad Behaviour” is a family affair in more ways than one. It centers on mother Lucy and daughter Dylan, both of whom work in the entertainment industry. Alice Englert (“Ginger & Rosa”), who wrote, directed, and stars as Dylan, would know a little something about that — she’s Jane Campion’s daughter. The “Power of the Dog” auteur even makes a cameo in the film.

Though “Bad Behaviour” is playfully meta, it’s not needlessly self-referential. Englert separates herself as a filmmaker with this screwy tale of modern narcissism (although she and her mother do both have a thing for guru characters). “Bad Behaviour” is bright and lively (not Campion’s wheelhouse) but, like its characters, it’s also aimless.

Englert clearly wants to say something meaningful about mothers, daughters, acting, female celebrity, social-media culture, spirituality, and mental health, but she’s not yet deft enough to tackle all of these things at once.

Naomi Ackie opens up about working with director Bong Joon-ho on Mickey 17. The English actress first gained recognition for her television roles in Doctor Who and The End of the F***ing World, though she is best known for her role as Jannah in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Ackie recently gained critical acclaim for her portrayal of Whitney Houston in the musical biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody and now has a couple of exciting projects on the way, including Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut Pussy Island and Bong's Mickey 17.

During a recent interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Ackie opens up for the first time about working with Bong on his upcoming sci-fi film. The Rise of Skywalker star shares a few hints about the mysterious movie, Mickey 17, calling it "heartwarming, wild, and funny," while also gushing with praise about working with the Parasite director.

Star Trek: Discovery should leave behind its disastrous take on the Klingons from its early seasons and reintroduce the beloved version of the warrior race that rose to prominence in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Klingons are one of the essential alien races in Star Trek, having debuted as one of the Federation's fiercest adversaries in Star Trek: The Original Series. Those original Klingons looked essentially human, though with some unfortunate brownface makeup.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 looks set to feature the mysterious Kovich in a more prominent role, perhaps holding the key to the season's true villain. Played by legendary director David Cronenberg, Kovich is a 32nd century Starfleet operative whose motives and general mission remain unclear. Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho’s next film ‘Mickey 17’, starring Robert Pattinson, is hitting theaters in March 29, 2024.

The sci-fi story is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel, described by publisher St. Martin Press as a high-concept cerebral thriller in the vein of “The Martian” and “Dark Matter.” Pattinson will play an “expendable” — a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Nifheim a” who refuses to let his replacement clone take his place, reports ‘Variety’.

The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.

Plot details for the movie have not been confirmed, and it’s not clear how closely Bong plans to stick to the source material. Ashton’s book was published in February 2022.

What’s next from Bong Joon Ho? In the wake of the Oscar-winning Parasite, the filmmaker is tackling Mickey 17, an adaptation of sci-fi novel Mickey7.

Today, Warner Bros. Pictures revealed that it’s set March 29, 2024 as the theatrical release date for Mickey 17. With the announcement brings a first look at star Robert Pattinson, below, who appears to be waking from a cryochamber.

Pattinson stars alongside Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie.
