Capstone Studios and Hammerstone Studios have hired Steven Quale to direct their upcoming supernatural thriller Black Box (Flight 298).

The film is based on the short film The Vessel, and an original screenplay from horror writer Stephen Susco.

Principal photography is set to begin in May in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Black Box (Flight 298) follows the supernatural events surrounding Vero Airlines 298 from New Orleans to Seattle.

Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici and Jon Oakes will produce alongside Capstone’s Christian Mercuri and David Haring (Bill & Ted Face the Music), Warren Zide, and Susco. Ruzanna Kegeyan and Roman Viaris of Capstone, and Clark Baker (Vessel) will executive produce.

Developers have announced plans to reopen The Vessel, the giant centerpiece of New York City’s Hudson Yards development, with new safety enhancements later this year.

The 150-foot sculpture, an architectural marvel designed by Thomas Heatherwick and constructed for $260 million, was closed three years ago after a series of tragic suicides. In addition to the criticism the structure received for its design, The Vessel was grimly dubbed a “staircase to nowhere.”

Before its closure, Hudson Yards’ controlling company, Related Companies, implemented a $10 entrance fee and a rule that mandated visitors to refrain from climbing the structure alone. However, these measures proved ineffective when a 14-year-old boy jumped from The Vessel in front of his family. The first suicide occurred in February 2020 and prompted the closure of the sculpture the following year after two additional suicides took place within a month. Trevor Donovan, best known for starring in the teen drama “90210” and several Hallmark Channel rom-coms, has been cast in the upcoming Ronald Reagan biopic.

The independent film, titled “Reagan,” features Dennis Quaid as the 40th president of the United States of America. It tells the story of Reagan during his childhood, through his acting career and into the highest office in the United States. Donovan will play Reagan’s longest-serving Secret Service agent John Barletta.

Though an exact release date hasn’t been announced, “Reagan” is expected to debut sometime in early 2022.

“Reagan” was filmed at the former president’s ranch outside of Santa Barbara, Calif. It’s the first film to ever shoot on the property where Reagan resided, which became known as the Western White House.

Netflix has acquired “Blue Miracle,” the Dennis Quaid film formerly known as “On the Line.”

Based on a true story, “Blue Miracle” centers on Casa Hogar, a Mexican orphanage that was struggling to survive after Hurricane Odile hit in 2014. On the brink of bankruptcy, the residents enter the world’s biggest fishing tournament in hopes of winning the prize money to save their home.

Along with Quaid, the cast includes Raymond Cruz, Anthony Gonzalez, Jimmy Gonzales, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Fernanda Urrejola and Bruce McGill.

The streaming service has not set a release date yet.

Julio Quintana, whose credits include the 2016 Martin Sheen drama “The Vessel,” directed the film. He also co-wrote the script with Chris Dowling.

Producers were Javier Chapa for Mucho Mas Media, Darren Moorman for Reserve Entertainment, Chris George for Redwood Ranch Productions, Ben Howard for Third Coast Content and Trey Reynolds for Provident Films. Provident Films co-financed the film with Endeavor Content.

Russian-born actor Alex Sparrow has joined the cast of Sean McNamara’s Ronald Reagan biopic, Variety has confirmed.

In “Reagan,” Sparrow will portray an up-and-coming Russian political leader named Andrei Novikov. Sparrow will act alongside Jon Voight, who plays a Kgb agent who tracked Reagan for 40 years. In search of answers about the Soviet Union’s demise, Sparrow’s character soon becomes acquainted with the Kgb agent.

“We are excited to have Alex on board,” McNamara said. “He brings poise and strength to the character and brings Novikov to life.”

Sparrow most recently appeared in the Netflix series “Space Force” as Yuri “Bobby” Telatovich, the Russian Space Force liaison. Kevin Dillon will portray Warner Bros. Studios founder Jack Warner in Dennis Quaid’s upcoming “Reagan” biopic, Variety has learned.

Production on “Reagan” in Oklahoma was halted for two weeks in late October and early November due to a Covid-19 outbreak among crew members. Shooting resumed on Nov. 5 and will be moving to California, according to producer Mark Joseph.

“Reagan” is directed by Sean McNamara, produced by Joseph and written by Howard Klausner. Penelope Ann Miller plays Nancy Reagan, Jon Voight portrays a Kgb agent who tracked Reagan for 40 years and Mena Suvari plays Reagan’s first wife Jane Wyman.

Reagan signed a seven-year contract with Warner Bros. in 1937 and made most of his movies there. He starred in “Dark Victory,” “Knute Rockne, All American” and “Kings Row,” which was nominated for the Academy Award for best picture in 1943. Showtime has rounded out the series regular cast for Hombre, its thriller drama pilot from BAFTA nominee Jonas Cuarón (Gravity), starring Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle). Marisé Alvarez (The Vessel), Greg Grunberg (A Star Is Born), Pepi Sonuga (Famous In Love), Adriana Santos (Taken) and newcomer Noah Reyes will join Bernal in the pilot, which is set to begin production at the end of April in Los Angeles.

Created by Cuarón, who also will direct the pilot, Hombre centers on a Mexican-American family man named Marcos Osuna (Bernal) who is living undocumented in the United States. When his wife Leticia is detained by Ice, Marcos, both desperate and resourceful, goes to unprecedented lengths to get her back. Showtime has revealed who will be joining “Mozart in the Jungle” star Gael García Bernal in the upcoming Jonas Cuarón pilot “Hombre,” which deals with undocumented immigrants.

Marisé Alvarez, Greg Grunberg, Pepi Sonuga, Adriana Santos, and Noah Reyes have all been cast in the pilot, which is set to begin production at the end of April in Los Angeles.

The Damah Film Festival, a competitive festival which specializes in short films focused on spirituality, is relocating to Tokyo. It will run May 10-11 and be based at the Kitazawa Town Hall in city’s Shimokitazawa district.

The festival was launched in Seattle in 2001, relocated to Culver City, California and has been settled in Hiroshima, Japan for the past five years. The Damah Hiroshima event has been rebranded and will continue as the Hiroshima International Film Festival. Damah is a Hebrew word which means metaphor or parable.

Say what you will about the latter day films of Terrence Malick, dude still knows how to create some gorgeous images. The director’s visual style is practically a trademark at this point, and it’s not a surprise that some of films Malick puts his name on as a producer (“The Better Angels,” “The Vessel“) look like they could’ve been directed by man himself. So it goes with the documentary “Awaken.”

The documentary is actually from filmmaker Tom Lowe, and was shot over a 5-year period in more than 30 countries, using timelapse, time-dilation, underwater, and aerial cinematography techniques.

Exclusive: First look at Two Tales, which sells to Italy among other territories.

Los Angeles-based Recreation Media has struck a number of deals here on its family animations Two Tails and Princess In Wonderland led by a deal with Eagle Pictures in Italy.

Both films are currently in production and are being produced by Moscow-based animation studio Licensing Brands.

Recreation handles worldwide rights excluding Cis and Baltics and has licensed rights in Cj and CiMax (South Korea), Bir (Turkey), Empire (Middle East), Ideal (Iran), Green Media (Vietnam), Akson (Poland), Dexin (former Yugoslavia), One Vision (Indonesia), and Pro Films (Bulgaria).

Negotiations are underway for China and additional territories that are expected to close in the coming days.

Directors of a certain auteurist stripe serving as producers for up-and-comers and protégés can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, they may over-exert their influence and end up railroading the intentions of their mentee. A younger, less experienced director, when faced with working under the tutelage of their idol, could let their own intentions and art be subsumed by the vision of their elder. If the two collaborators are on the same level visually and existentially, though, then the fusion of established name with emergent talent can be something sublime and beautiful.

The Vessel, blessedly, fits into this latter category. Directed and written by Julio Quintana and produced by Terrence Malick, it is the rare film in which the guiding hand of the artist-as-producer feels not overbearing or dominant, but rather paternal and knowing. It is obvious that this is entirely Quintana’s movie, his vision and his spirit,...

Following the gorgeous trailer for his long-awaited Voyage of Time and news that he’ll start shooting his next feature this month, today we have a look at another project from Terrence Malick. Martin Sheen, reteaming with the director over four decades after Badlands (although he was cut out of The Thin Red Line), leads the drama The Vessel, which is produced by Malick (along with frequent collaborator Sarah Green) and directed by Julio Quintana.

Ahead of a a release this September, the first trailer has landed today for the drama which follows Sheen as Father Douglas, a Catholic priest in a Latin American town, still rebuilding ten years after a tsunami. With a score by Malick regular Hanan Townshend, much of the imagery in the trailer will be familiar to fans of the director, though we’ll have to wait and see if it has the same spark.
