Developers have announced plans to reopen The Vessel, the giant centerpiece of New York City’s Hudson Yards development, with new safety enhancements later this year.
The 150-foot sculpture, an architectural marvel designed by Thomas Heatherwick and constructed for $260 million, was closed three years ago after a series of tragic suicides. In addition to the criticism the structure received for its design, The Vessel was grimly dubbed a “staircase to nowhere.”
Before its closure, Hudson Yards’ controlling company, Related Companies, implemented a $10 entrance fee and a rule that mandated visitors to refrain from climbing the structure alone. However, these measures proved ineffective when a 14-year-old boy jumped from The Vessel in front of his family. The first suicide occurred in February 2020 and prompted the closure of the sculpture the following year after two additional suicides took place within a month. After its reopening, a fourth suicide occurred, which led to...

Russian-born actor Alex Sparrow has joined the cast of Sean McNamara’s Ronald Reagan biopic, Variety has confirmed.
In “Reagan,” Sparrow will portray an up-and-coming Russian political leader named Andrei Novikov. Sparrow will act alongside Jon Voight, who plays a Kgb agent who tracked Reagan for 40 years. In search of answers about the Soviet Union’s demise, Sparrow’s character soon becomes acquainted with the Kgb agent.
“We are excited to have Alex on board,” McNamara said. “He brings poise and strength to the character and brings Novikov to life.”
Sparrow most recently appeared in the Netflix series “Space Force” as Yuri “Bobby” Telatovich, the Russian Space Force liaison. In the U.S., he has also held roles on Lifetime’s “Unreal,” the horror film “The Vatican Tapes” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.” In Russia — where he goes by Alexey Vorobyov — Sparrow is best known for his music career,...

Broad Green: How Wall Street Wealth, A-List Talent, and Brash Decisions Made an Indie Player Implode
It takes guts to join the indie distribution fray, especially when the market is challenged by big buyers like Netflix and Amazon Studios (which, along with Annapurna, is optimistically taking over its own theatrical distribution) and television is chasing down the hottest indie talent. Even one-time high-flyer The Weinstein Co., which once knew better than anyone how to play the indie game, is evolving to survive during these changing times.
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 38, and his brother, Daniel, 34, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures three summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical. It was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now, after trying to use arcane algorithms to determine what movies to make, Gabriel has decided to pull the plug on production. The breaking point was the July 14 release of John Leonetti’s “Wish Upon,” which grossed $13.2 million on a $12 million budget. (Theaters return about half of the take to the distributor,...

Say what you will about the latter day films of Terrence Malick, dude still knows how to create some gorgeous images. The director’s visual style is practically a trademark at this point, and it’s not a surprise that some of films Malick puts his name on as a producer (“The Better Angels,” “The Vessel“) look like they could’ve been directed by man himself. So it goes with the documentary “Awaken.”
The documentary is actually from filmmaker Tom Lowe, and was shot over a 5-year period in more than 30 countries, using timelapse, time-dilation, underwater, and aerial cinematography techniques.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Pastoral (Ewan McGregor)
If my limited experience with Philip Roth adaptations is any indication, his novels deal in emotion. There are existential crises concerning identity involved, each a character study about life’s impact beyond the surface experiences propelling them forward. This isn’t something easily translated from page to screen when so much consists of internalized motivation. You must really look into the text, ignoring plot to...

Directors of a certain auteurist stripe serving as producers for up-and-comers and protégés can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, they may over-exert their influence and end up railroading the intentions of their mentee. A younger, less experienced director, when faced with working under the tutelage of their idol, could let their own intentions and art be subsumed by the vision of their elder. If the two collaborators are on the same level visually and existentially, though, then the fusion of established name with emergent talent can be something sublime and beautiful.
The Vessel, blessedly, fits into this latter category. Directed and written by Julio Quintana and produced by Terrence Malick, it is the rare film in which the guiding hand of the artist-as-producer feels not overbearing or dominant, but rather paternal and knowing. It is obvious that this is entirely Quintana’s movie, his vision and his spirit,...

Hanan Townshend‘s journey from college student to frequent collaborator with Terrence Malick didn’t involve high-powered agents, or rubbing shoulders with the director at a fancy cocktail party. Rather, it was Townshend answering a simple, generic classified ad that led to him working in the music department on “The Tree Of Life.” And from there, Townshend became […]

Actor and longtime political activist Martin Sheen has some very strong opinions about Gop presidential candidate Donald Trump, which he shares with The Hollywood Reporter in this Q&A ostensibly about his new movie, The Vessel. Sheen didn't care to discuss his son, Charlie Sheen, or Hard Evidence: O.J is Innocent, a docuseries he narrated and produced. In The Vessel, executive produced by Terrence Malick and due Sept. 16 in theaters, Sheen plays a priest in a small town where the elementary school has been wiped out by a tsunami. A trailer is below. How’d this movie with Malick come

The suddenly prolific Terrence Malick isn’t just busy making his own movies, but lending his producing powers to other projects that have no shame in borrowing his aesthetic. “The Better Angels,” directed by “To The Wonder,” “Knight Of Cups,” and “Weightless” editor A.J. Edwards, certainly bore the trademark look and feel of Malick feature, and […]

"Sometimes I think about how different things would be if that wave hadn't just struck in the middle of the night..." Wow. The first trailer has debuted for a film called The Vessel, executive produced by Terrence Malick, from filmmaker Julio Quintana. Starring Martin Sheen, the film is about a Catholic priest in a Latin American town destroyed by a tsunami ten years ago. This trailer is filled with some stunning imagery reminiscent of Malick's work and a tiny bit of the score by Hanan Townshend, the talented composer from Malick's Knight of Cups and To the Wonder. Where did this film come from?! It looks amazing! Also starring Lucas Quintana, Jacqueline Duprey, and Aris Mejias. Don't hesitate, just dive right into this. Here's the first official trailer for Julio Quintana's The Vessel, found on YouTube (via Tfs): Ten years after a tsunami destroyed a small-town elementary school with all the children inside,...

Following the gorgeous trailer for his long-awaited Voyage of Time and news that he’ll start shooting his next feature this month, today we have a look at another project from Terrence Malick. Martin Sheen, reteaming with the director over four decades after Badlands (although he was cut out of The Thin Red Line), leads the drama The Vessel, which is produced by Malick (along with frequent collaborator Sarah Green) and directed by Julio Quintana.
Ahead of a a release this September, the first trailer has landed today for the drama which follows Sheen as Father Douglas, a Catholic priest in a Latin American town, still rebuilding ten years after a tsunami. With a score by Malick regular Hanan Townshend, much of the imagery in the trailer will be familiar to fans of the director, though we’ll have to wait and see if it has the same spark.

Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Jodie Foster, and Paul Schrader give an oral history of Taxi Driver at THR:
We had one screening at the studio in a small screening room for some friends, and then it was shown to the studio. I don’t recall what my friends said, but people were kind of perplexed. I believe it was the next day that the studio saw it and there was a smiling kind of reaction that was very brief. Then I heard word that they were concerned that women wouldn’t like the film.
