The French Connection. Unforgiven. The Poseidon Adventure. Crimson Tide. Hoosiers. Gene Hackman is one of the most outstanding actors of this generation—or any generation. At the age of 95, he lived a remarkable life, one of acclaim and prestige. Regretfully, his death is clouded in mystery. His roles will be cherished for decades to come. His two Oscars will be on the cinephile's mantle forever.

Yet, among nerds, he will always be Lex Luthor.

Some nerds (and critics) thought Hackman's portrayal of Superman's criminal nemesis was part huckster and used car salesman. When it's that guy, Hollywood thought they were getting a more serious tone with grit and that signature gravely voice barking commands.

He was paired with Ned Beatty, another serious thespian. Yet, when faced against Christopher Reeve, they became Abbott and Costello.

And you know what? DC Comics wouldn't have had any other way. It worked splendidly.

Critics loved the performance.

The DC Multiverse owes a lot to Greg Berlanti, given that the producer extraordinaire was responsible for the immensely successful DC TV-verse, which aired on CW. This included Arrow, which kicked off the franchise on the small screen, followed by shows like Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and so on.

Berlanti revealed to The Hollywood Reporter how he actually got into DC, and how his being gay had something to do with it. Berlanti also talked about the shows he watched as a child and his geeky interests that might have labeled him as weird.

HBO is sharing a first look at Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart in the DC Studios series “Lanterns,” which has begun production.

The drama, which was given a straight-to-series order in June and is based on the DC comic “Green Lantern,” follows the two intergalactic cops as they are drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery to investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Netflix is once again teaming up with director Janeen Damian and actress Miranda Cosgrove for a second romantic comedy film, The Wrong Paris. Filming took place in the second half of 2024, and the film will be released on Netflix sometime in 2025. Here’s everything we know about The Wrong Paris on Netflix.

This marks Janeen Damian’s third major movie for Netflix, having previously directed Lindsay Lohan’s significant return to acting via Netflix with Falling for Christmas and Irish Wish. The duo did not partner on Lohan’s latest movie for Netflix, Our Little Secret, which was released for Christmas 2024.

Elsewhere, Damian is known for working with her husband, Michael, on a slew of Christmas projects. Michael will serve as a producer on The Wrong Paris. The project comes from Motion Picture Corporation of America (Mpca), Riviera Films, and K7 Entertainment.

For eight seasons, "Monk" struck that perfect balance between hard-cracking detective work and comedy. Police procedurals were a dime a dozen in the early 2000s, but the thing to set this one apart from its contemporaries was the fact the titular Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) dealt with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This fueled his 312 phobias, which occasionally got in the way of him solving cases, but they also allowed him to view the world in a unique way that would help him solve various crimes.

"Monk" ended in 2009, but fans got one last fix thanks to 2023's made-for-Peacock movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case," which /Film called "an overdue reunion" with much of the central cast reprising their roles. But it's not like the cast was kept in stasis for 13 years between the show's ending and the reunion. Many of them went on to other things, filling out their filmographies with myriad other projects.

Last week, DC Studios invited select reporters to an hourlong Dcu update which, when all was said and done, wasn't received with a particularly warm response online.

As well as admitting that several "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" projects announced at the start of 2023 have fallen by the wayside, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed they still haven't found the Dcu's Batman.

While both executives chose their words carefully during this event, Gunn was surprisingly candid when asked about his biggest regrets since taking charge of DC Studios.

"I mean, life is complicated. There’s always little things," he said. "Like I wish I did that differently. I wish I asked David [Corenswet] to do that take differently, it’s just like little things. There’s writers that we put on projects that I wish we didn’t, but overall, I feel just so lucky."

In the realm of adaptations of the "Superman" mythos, "Smallville" is certainly up there in terms of its enduring popularity. The series, which starred Tom Welling as Clark Kent, aired for a whopping 10 seasons (amassing more than 200 episodes to its name along the way). It even lasted through two networks as The WB eventually transitioned to The CW. Starring alongside Welling was Michael Rosenbaum as his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. But Rosenbaum didn't go the distance, with the actor leaving the show after Season 7. Why would an actor leave a successful sci-fi show early? Rosenbaum had his reasons.

The Summer of Superman is a brilliant marketing move by DC Comics. Not only does it help remind people of James Gunn's Superman movie, which premieres on July 11, 2025, but it’s also a way to celebrate the Man of Steel’s holiday of April 18; the day he first debuted.

The “Summer of Superman” was announced with various comic books including stories in the normal continuity and stories involving Supes, special issues, and variants galore. There’s even a comic for younger kids called Superman’s Good Guy Gang. But wait, there's more: DC Comics has announced that Kal-El’s super cousin Supergirl is getting a solo title written and illustrated by the amazing Sophie Campbell (Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jem and the Holograms).

Sophie Campbell is a fan of Supergirl (whose real name is Kara Zor-El), which makes this a great decision for DC Comics’ All In initiative.

DC Studios held a press event last week which saw co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran share several updates on the Dcu's future. It was a bit of a mixed bag overall; Clayface and Sgt. Rock are moving forward, for example, but work on The Authority and Booster Gold has stalled. 

On the plus side, Lanterns started shooting in Los Angeles last week and James Gunn was quick to praise the "marvellous" work of the show's creative team, Tom King, Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy.

"I've been watching the dailies with that. It's really so cool because it is connected to Superman because we've got Guy Gardner in that, and then we've got these Green Lanterns over here," the filmmaker and studio executive revealed. "It's just such a different tone from what Superman is."

DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran were asked Friday in a DC presser about what they’re doing to keep production in California, particularly at a time when two wildfires have threatened the possibility of more film and TV runaway shoots in the wake of the 2023 dual strikes.

It’s not an easy question, one that boils down to dollars and cents is and evaluated with each series or feature that’s greenlighted. At the heart of balancing the budget scales for DC is Lars P. Winther, a former assistant director for Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

“I hope California steps up in a big away and increases the [tax] credit,” Safran said. “Nothing would make us happy than to shoot here on a more consistent basis.”

It’s been just over two years since James Gunn and Peter Safran mapped out their initial slate of projects for DC Studios and what would be the newly revamped Dcu, a new interconnected universe of superhero movies and films based on DC characters and kicking off in earnest with Gunn’s “Superman” arriving this summer.

So where do they stand? In a press event last week on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn and Safran held court with journalists about all they had cooking, the stuff that’s moving forward and the stuff that has lost the wind in its sails or has hit a snag. That included everything from details on the studio’s Batman films — both the Dcu film “The Brave and the Bold” and updates on the non-canon “The Batman 2” from Matt Reeves — as well as a potential “Teen Titans” movie and the update...

Not long after the production of Superman commenced, fans were given a first look at David Corenswet’s Kal-El, which made sense as the bulk of the outside shoot was taking place in Cleveland, making them prone to leaks. However, with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, whose filming began last month, it seems fans will have to wait a tad bit longer for the first reveal.

With Jason Momoa finally stepping in the shoes of Lobo, a role he has been desiring since his Dceu days, Gunn cleared the air surrounding a potential first look at Lobo in the upcoming sci-fi epic.

“Superman” filmmaker and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn sat down with reporters last week to offer status updates on all things DC alongside his co-chief Peter Safran, and one golden rule emerged: They’re not rushing into anything.

Gunn said he’s bringing key lessons in franchise building from his time at Marvel to DC Studios, with a strong focus on script quality over release dates and building a connected universe that still allows for standalone stories.

Gunn directly referenced his experience making the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise noting how initial skepticism on the first film turned to success: “‘Guardians’ came in. Suddenly, everybody’s like this movie is going to be Marvel’s first bomb. This can’t work, nobody cares. What is a raccoon? How is a raccoon ever going to talk to Thor?” Gunn said.

“And then that went the way it did,” he added, addressing chatter over DC’s revamp.

More than two years ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios as Co-Producers and Co-CEOs, they announced a slate of movies and shows that will reboot the ill-fated Dceu. This also meant that actors like Cavill, Momoa, and Gal Gadot who were loved by fans wouldn’t continue portraying their roles in future DC adaptations.

Even though some actors like Cavill already moved to different projects it’s been pretty much rumored from day one that Momoa won’t exactly leave DC or WB for that matter as he has been heavily rumored to play Lobo. The rumors were mostly fueled by Momoa’s physical resemblance to the character and the fact that he wanted to play him for a long time now.

Is this the first time a studio executive has taken centre stage on a comic book cover?

We can't think of too many other instances of it happening, but a new Superman Unlimited #1 variant cover by Dan Mora will put DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn front and centre alongside Superman star David Corenswet.

This marks the filmmaker's second Dcu "cameo" as he previously appeared in the opening credits for Creature Commandos, a show he created. Will Gunn eventually show up on screen in live-action?

It certainly seems possible and, prior to being appointed the Dcu's boss, he played a role in the animated Harley Quinn TV series.

“Reacher” is back.

Based on the book series by Lee Child, the Prime Video series once again finds our titular hero (Alan Ritchson) getting off the bus and getting into trouble. This time he is in Maine, recruited by local DEA agents looking to bust a bad guy – and get back an informant who has gone missing. And wouldn’t you know it, this seemingly random encounter ties back to a case from Reacher’s past?

Production on Lanterns has reportedly begun and we're hoping a first official look at Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) is revealed any day now.

In the meantime, Pierre recently appeared at a red carpet event and showed off what many believe could be his new look to play the Dcu superhero. The Mufasa: The Lion King and Rebel Ridge star has ditched his trademark facial hair for a clean-cut look and sharp haircut which, at first glance, makes it look like John has stepped straight off the page.

"Right now, I'm locked in and focused on a very beautiful project. A project that's very dear to my heart. It's Lanterns and I'll be portraying the beautiful character of John Stewart who I love very dearly," the actor told a reporter who asked about his upcoming projects.

The Dcu technically began with the animated series Creature Commandos, but both Safran and Gunn consider the upcoming Superman film to be the true launch of this new cinematic universe.

Several other projects have already been confirmed, including Lanterns live-action TV show focusing on a notable trio of Green Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Milly Alcock set to play the Dcu’s Supergirl. Additionally, Paradise Lost—a TV series exploring the lore of Themyscira and Wonder Woman’s origins—is also in development.

While some of the biggest roles in the Dcu have been cast, including Superman, Lex Luthor, and Supergirl, one major question remains unanswered: Who will play Batman in this new universe?

Much has been said about how Superman will tackle what it means to be a modern journalist. Lois Lane actor Rachel Brosnahan has already addressed how the intrepid Daily Planet reporter will handle fake news, but will we see her in more than just the newsroom?

Lois being an on-air reporter or even someone who uses social media to communicate with the citizens of Metropolis does make sense in today's world. However, it sounds like James Gunn is taking a classic approach to the print journalist.

"I spoke to a handful of really brilliant journalists to help me kind of get inside the mindset of folks who have both worked in a newsroom and on broadcast, which Lois obviously doesn't but...still helpful," Brosnahan confirms in the video below. "They were fantastic [and] very generous with their time."

The 17th episode of The Flash‘s third season, “Duet” aired March 21, 2017, and featured crossover appearances by Supergirl‘s Melissa Benoist and Jeremy Jordan, Arrow‘s John Barrowman and Legends of Tomorrow‘s Victor Garber. The Flash‘s Jesse L. Martin and Carlos Valdes also sang in the episode, as did Glee grad Darren Criss, guesting as the villainous Music Meister.

Superman and Batman — they've been super friends and super adversaries, but they are the most inseparable of all superheroes. They're just perfect foils; one bright and friendly, one dour and reserved. Even their costumes reflect this. Both Superman and Batman's outfits use the same broad design layout: two-dominant colors, with a cape, yellow belt above strongman trunks, and a chest insignia. Though the Batman of James Gunn's new DC Universe made his first, small appearance in "Creature Commandos," Gunn has said we shouldn't expect to see Batman in the upcoming Superman movie. But there's another Superman on TV right now.

"My Adventures with Superman" is a cartoon airing on Adult Swim.

In 2025, Jonathan Kent, the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, will be taking on a new name in the comics: Super Son. This decision was made by DC Comics to prevent any mix-up with James Gunn’s Superman movie, set to release this summer. Instead of being known as Superman or Superman Jr., Jonathan will be introduced as Super Son in the upcoming Secret Six series.

The new comic series, set to debut in April, will feature Jonathan Kent as Super Son, with the first few issues listing him as both Jonathan Kent and Super Son. By the end of the series, he will be fully recognized as Superman’s Son or Super Son, marking a shift in his identity.

Over the years, there have been plenty of actors to play the role of Superman. The Man of Steel is one of the most recognizable superheroes of all time, and that makes him one of the most iconic movie and TV stars too. There have been multiple adaptations of the DC Comics character on both the big and small screen, with each actor adding something new and unique to the role. Most recently to do it is Tyler Hoechlin.

Hoechlin initially appeared in a guest stint on The CW's Supergirl in 2016 before starring in his own critically-acclaimed TV series Superman and Lois, which just wrapped its run after four amazing seasons. The show had to end prematurely due to DC Studios' decision to launch a brand new DC Universe featuring a new Superman movie.

Ke Huy Quan’s first time out as a leading man is currently in theaters for a twist on the upcoming Valentine’s Day usual programming, but while the newly revived Academy Award-winner makes the promotional rounds, he inevitably fields questions about a possible Goonies sequel, especially powered by not just one reunion with Sean Astin in Love Hurts, but his former co-stars would celebrate him as he got his hand and feet imprints installed at the famed Tcl Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

Quan would already say that he “would love for it to happen” in regards to a Goonies sequel, but he now tells Collider that the cast is ready to jump on the ship with him. The Everything Everywhere All At Once star explained,

That’s on all of our minds. I’ve spoken to everybody, and especially our head Goonie, Steven Spielberg, who also wants to do one.

After the success of Arrow and The Flash, the CW dipped its toes into the Supergirl property, and even though the show itself fumbled the ball with its latter seasons, one thing it got right was the casting, at least for the most part. From Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl to Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor, the casting for the show was arguably some of the strongest in the Arrowverse.

However, unlike his peers, Cryer didn’t have to undergo a rigorous acting process, which had nothing to do with his Two and a Half Men fame but one of his earlier works alongside Christopher Reeve.

Nicholas Hoult is set to take on the role of one of the most iconic comic book villains of all time in James Gunn's Superman, and like most previous incarnations of the character, this version of Lex Luthor genuinely believes he is fully justified in his mission to take down the Man of Steel (David Corenswet).

Hoult appeared at Megacon Orlando yesterday, and Cbr was on hand to ask the Nosferatu actor some questions about his upcoming Dcu debut. When a fan asked him why he believes Lex feels that he's "right about Superman," Hoult responded.

There have been conflicting reports about which characters will make up the superhero team in the Dcu, with the latest reports claiming it will be Teen Titans Go! leads Robin, Raven, Starfire, Cyborg and Beast Boy.

With The Brave and the Bold set to revolve around Batman training Damian Wayne, the likelihood of Teen Titans' Robin being Dick Grayson is low. That will upset many fans but, at this point in the Dcu's timeline, Dick is almost certainly Nightwing.

According to a new rumour, the plan is indeed for Damian to serve as Robin in this team-up. There's precedent for that in the comics and he's bound to have an interesting dynamic...

With Superman just months away, excitement is already spreading for the rest of the Dcu’s upcoming lineup. One of the most anticipated films is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.

Sebastian Stan, known for playing Bucky Barnes, recently shared his excitement at the 2024 Comic-Con Liverpool. While discussing upcoming films, he said:

“You know what movie I’m really excited for? Supergirl! That movie is going to be f—ing great, because it’s got Craig Gillepsie directing, who is an unbelievable director. And I’m very excited about that movie.”

Gillepsie is a well-respected filmmaker with a strong track record. He directed I, Tonya (2017), where Margot Robbie played Tonya Harding and Stan co-starred as her ex-husband. He also helmed Lars and the Real Girl (2007), starring Ryan Gosling.

“This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman is back with a new thriller series full of twists, turns and of course, backstabbing.

In “Paradise,” Sterling K. Brown stars as Agent Xavier Collins, whose life is turned upside-down when he finds James Marsden’s President Cal Bradford dead during a routine morning. As the murder investigation for Cal kicks off, “Paradise” reveals a dystopian twist that altered the U.S. as the characters knew it.

In addition to Brown and Marsden, “Paradise” stars Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Krys Marshall, Jon Beavers and Nicole Brydon Bloom, among others.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn recently shared our first official look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow via a behind-the-scenes image, and if you're familiar with Tom King's acclaimed DC Comics miniseries of the same name, the setting of the photo will likely have looked very familiar.

The shot features star Milly Alcock in a hoodie (Kara will almost certainly be in-costume for this scene in the movie), facing what looks a lot like a bar counter. In the Woman of Tomorrow comic, the Girl of Steel and her companion, Ruthye, take a little break from their revenge mission and travel to a space-bar for a drink.

Here, Kara is confronted by an alien who blames her for her cousin Superman imprisoning his brothers in the Phantom Zone. As you might expect, the altercation doesn't work out so well for the instigator.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has taken to social media to share a first look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, confirming the movie has officially begun production in the UK.

In this first-look image, we see the Maid of Might hanging out in a bar and wearing a hoodie in place of her classic superhero costume. Milly Alcock is rocking Supergirl's trademark blonde locks, though, and we can see the character's logo on the back of her chair.

"Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El," Gunn said. DC Studios co-head James Gunn is celebrating the beginning of filming of Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock in the title role.

The filmmaker took to social media to share a teaser photo of Alcock as Kara Zor-El as filming starts on the superhero movie.

“Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El,” Gunn shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique #Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira.”

The DC Studios movie is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic book for the big screen. In that comic, the bad guy is Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl’s father.

As we build towards DC Studios' highly-anticipated Superman reboot, DC Comics recently announced its new "Summer of Superman" initiative, which will "celebrate the Man of Steel’s enduring legacy as a pop culture icon, and a symbol of truth, justice, and hope, and his first comic book appearance in the historic Action Comics #1 in 1938."

Following the somewhat surprising news that long-time Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott would be jumping ship to DC to pen a new Superman Unlimited series, director James Gunn has shared some stunning artwork from Jorge Jiménez for Summer of Superman Special #1.
