Former Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch, who went viral a few years ago for faking a cancer diagnosis, has attracted the public’s attention again with her recent efforts to aid victims of the Los Angeles wildfires.
Last Tuesday, wildfires erupted across Southern California, destroying over 12,000 structures, forcing over 100,000 people to evacuate and killing at least 27 people, with 28 more presently missing.
Many celebrities and public figures – and Hollywood’s top studios, streamers and companies – have given multi-million dollar donations to support relief efforts and personal GoFundMe accounts, including Taylor Swift, Eva Longoria and Leonardo DiCaprio.
However, when Finch announced that she was collecting funds for victims, her philanthropic intentions were met with skepticism. In a post to Facebook, she wrote, “This is just me, boots on the ground. It was challenging getting dog food while evacuated, and I was at a safe place. So this is for people who have...

A co-executive producer for “Grey’s Anatomy” is sounding the alarm on Elisabeth Finch – a disgraced and former writer for the long-running series – for calling for donations during the Los Angeles wildfires.
Finch was outed as a compulsive liar back in 2022 and much of her acclaimed work as a writer and executive producer on the ABC series was informed by those lies. The biggest among them was that she was living with a rare form of bone cancer. Now it seems she’s raising money for those affected by the L.A. wildfires by asking for donations to her personal Venmo account.
“This is just me. Boots on the ground. It was challenging enough getting dog food while evacuated and I was at a safe place. So this is for people who have virtually nothing and have pets with basic needs,” call for charitable donations read.

The catastrophic Los Angeles wildfires have sparked widespread and generous relief efforts across the city, including a cluster of new donation centers, hundreds if not thousands of GoFundMe campaigns and a series of multi-million dollar donations from Hollywood’s top studios, streamers, companies and nonprofits and stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Eva Longoria and Taylor Swift.
However, eyebrows are now being raised over the efforts of a specific individual — disgraced Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch — who announced on social media that she was collecting funds directly to her Venmo account. “This is just me. As Timothee Chalamet likely wheezes at some point in “A Complete Unknown,” the times they are a-changin’. While decidedly not a documentary (even the songs are recorded anew), the Bob Dylan biopic and its oft-leaned-upon lyric do speak to the modern moment as well (and as widely) as they ever have. Here, they reference a doc world in disruption. In Hollywood, the streamers are tightening their once-elastic belts. Theatrical releases are too few and far between. The demand for documentaries remains, but the distribution paths aren’t as robust or reliable as they were even a few years ago.
Unique obstacles surfaced in 2024. Despite the year being dominated by debate over the November election, political documentaries faced a wary marketplace and thus struggled to reach audiences in a timely fashion. Cold feet proved to be an unfortunate trend. The year’s best-reviewed documentary film, “No Other Land,” has yet to secure distribution,...

After Peacock’s documentary on Elisabeth Finch was released earlier this month, Camilla Luddington says she received requests to comment (including from the doc’s directors and The Hollywood Reporter) on the former Grey’s Anatomy writer who was revealed to have fabricated stories about her life. Luddington, who has played Dr. Jo Wilson on the hit ABC medical drama for 12 seasons, didn’t comment for the doc, nor has she commented since Anatomy of Lies released on Oct. 15. Now, she’s opening up about the experience on her podcast with her former co-star Jessica Capshaw.

Exclusive: Condé Nast, like all media players, has been forced to reimagine itself.
Over the past year, the company has laid off 5% of its staff, citing the impact of TikTok and other digital competition; reached a settlement with union members; and dealt with a decidedly choppy ad market.
Despite running that gauntlet, however, the media industry mainstay has notably not curtailed its ambitions to make a mark in film and television. In fact, the company is starting to see encouraging returns on its commitment to a print-to-screen pipeline. Condé Nast now has 14 projects in production or post-production set up with distributors like Amazon, Netflix, HBO and Warner Brothers, plus another 23 projects in development with independent financial backers.
Two titles just out this month are based on Vanity Fair pieces. Breath of Fire, a multi-part docuseries on HBO and Max, explores the multi-million-dollar Kundalini yoga industry and its scandalous leader Guru Jagat.

Vanity Fair writer Evgenia Peretz likes to take her time when reporting out a story. But in March of 2022, when she first met Jennifer Beyer — the then-wife of former Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth Finch, who was later revealed to have fabricated stories about her life — Peretz knew she had something really big to get out.
“I knew that this was going to be a hot story, so it was one of those situations where I felt like I needed to report this very quickly — and there was a lot of reporting that needed to be done,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Jump ahead two months and her story landed as a two-part feature for Vanity Fair that would expose Finch as having conned one of the longest-running writers rooms in television. But the writer and executive producer’s betrayals went beyond the walls of ABC’s beloved hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy,...

The directors of “Anatomy of Lies” weren’t moved by former “Grey’s Anatomy” writer Elisabeth Finch’s public apology following the release of their Peacock docuseries.
The three-episode saga from Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall, which launched Tuesday on the NBCUniversal streamer, expands on Peretz’s 2022 Vanity Fair exposé detailing how the TV writer lied for years about having a rare form of bone cancer, to the point where she infused those lies into storylines she wrote into the ABC medical drama.
The doc includes interviews with Finch’s former colleagues from “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Vampire Diaries,” acquaintances and her ex-wife Jennifer Beyer, whom Finch met while seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder only to mine pieces of Beyer and her family’s troubled past for plot points in her work.

In a three-part docuseries Anatomy of Lies, new details about the life and lies of Elisabeth Finch, the Grey’s Anatomy writer who infamously faked a cancer diagnosis, are revealed.
A seasoned TV writer with credits on shows such as True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, in 2012, Finch began to tell friends and colleagues that she had been diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. She even wrote a now-removed essay for Elle about her unique experience with the disease, which caught the attention of an executive at Shondaland, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes’ production company. Impressed with the essay, Rhimes offered Finch a writer’s spot on the ABC show, and Finch’s health issues were soon incorporated into episode storylines, which Finch wrote.
The truth about Finch’s diagnosis was first reported in March 2022, when The Ankler published the initial article that exposed Finch for fabricating her personal and medical history.

But one thing was missing—a role on Grey’s Anatomy, one of the most popular medical dramas ever. When her attempts to join the writing staff didn’t pan out, Finch hatched an elaborate scheme.

The “Anatomy of Lies” subject apologized in an Instagram post that revealed she’s “making amends and expressing my genuine remorse as best I can when people are ready,” and that she’s been seeking mental health treatment for “nearly three years” following the bombshell 2022 Vanity Fair exposé about her lies.
Many of her falsehoods inspired her acclaimed work as a writer and executive producer on “Grey’s Anatomy” — among them that she was living with a rare form of bone cancer. Her personal relationships also inspired plot points in the long-running ABC medical drama.

Update: This story has been updated with Jennifer Beyer’s response to Elisabeth Finch’s apology.
On the day of the Oct. 15 premiere of Peacock’s investigative docuseries “Anatomy of Lies” — which examines the long cancer scam perpetrated by former “Grey’s Anatomy” writer Elisabeth Finch — she has offered something new: a full apology for her actions. In a post on Instagram, she begins by writing: “I’ve given no one any reason to believe a word I say. I lied about so much; things so many people have been devastated by in real life. ‘I’m sorry’ feels like the smallest words compared to what I’ve done, yet they are the truest.”
Finch goes on to write that in years since stories in spring 2022 in The Ankler and Vanity Fair exposed her many lies — and revealed her to be a con woman who’d gotten her job on “Grey’s Anatomy...

Former Grey’s Anatomy scribe and co-executive producer Elisabeth Finch is copping to having “lied about so much” on the same day that a docuseries about her Hollywood rise and fall is dropping on Peacock.
In a statement posted to Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, Finch apologized for what she described as multiple falsehoods that affected friends, family and others close to her. Admitting that she had “given no one any reason to believe a word I say,” Finch said, “‘I’m sorry’ feels like the smallest words compared to what I’ve done, yet they are the truest. I trapped myself in the addiction of lies, betraying and traumatizing my closest friends, family and colleagues.”
The writer, whose compelling backstory as an alleged survivor of bone cancer inspired a storyline on the ABC medical procedural but was later thrown into doubt, added, “I’m making amends and expressing my genuine...

‘Anatomy of Lies’: The Most Truly Horrific Revelations About Elisabeth Finch in Peacock’s Docuseries
Warning: The following post contains discussions of domestic violence, mental health crises, sexual assault, and suicide. Since truth is often stranger than fiction, it’s no surprise that writers often rely on the experiences of reality to create their most effective stories. In the case of Elisabeth Finch, though, the fictional elements were posed as part of her life. The Grey’s Anatomy writer and producer was famously outed in a 2022 Vanity Fair article for lying her way to the top of the hit medical drama with a series of increasingly staggering false claims about her health, family, and traumatic experiences, many of which inspired memorable and emotional episodes on the show but didn’t actually happen to her at all. Peacock’s new three-part docuseries, Anatomy of Lies, sheds new light on the deeply disturbing true story, including testimonials that are heartbreaking and enraging in equal measure. Here are the...

Update: After this story published, Elisabeth Finch posted an apology for her past actions on Instagram.
Even before Evgenia Peretz’s two-part Vanity Fair story about the long con of former “Grey’s Anatomy” writer Elisabeth Finch went to print in 2022, her husband, filmmaker David Schisgall, was already warning her that Hollywood would snatch up this story if she didn’t.
“I remember sitting in our bedroom, and hearing more and more about what she was reporting and just saying to her: ‘This is a documentary. Either you are going to make it or someone else will,’” Schisgall tells Variety.
He isn’t wrong. As is repeatedly stated in “Anatomy of Lies,” Peacock’s new docuseries co-directed by Peretz and Schisgall, Finch’s story is tailor made for Hollywood. An aspiring writer with experience on shows like “True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries,” Finch desperately wanted a job writing for her favorite series,...

The new episode isn’t even here yet, but I can already feel my heart breaking. Let’s get into our Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 4 Spoilers.
According to the latest promo, we’re going to be introduced to Chloe next week.
Chloe is, of course, Mika’s 22-year-old sister who just received a devastating cancer diagnosis.
(Disney/Anne Marie Fox) Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 4 Spoilers: Another Heartbreaking Cancer Arc
A few things stand out about this storyline.
First, Midori Francis announced before the new season premiered that she would be exiting the Grey’s Anatomy cast.
Naturally, I’m wondering if the writers will use Chloe to explain Yasuda’s decision to leave, or if it will be more complicated than that.
As seen on Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 Episode 17, sometimes cancers can be genetic and affect entire families.
While I really hope this isn’t the case with the Yasuda siblings,...

Scammer, narcissist, gaslighter, and emotional terrorist are only a few words that come to mind when one thinks of Elisabeth Finch after tuning into Anatomy of Lies.
If you tuned into the three-episode documentary, it doesn’t begin to encompass the full breadth of what this diabolical woman unleashed on her family, friends, colleagues, and, frankly, the world of television.
Finch’s unconscionable mission to be famous has come true, as this woman will most certainly live the rest of her cancer-free days in infamy.

The orchestration was simple and got straight to the point, not opting for all the ridiculously absurd tactics others use to stand out.

Grey’s Writer’s Horrific History of Falsehoods Gets a Full Dissection in Peacock Doc Anatomy of Lies
We knew that the story of disgraced Grey’s Anatomy writer Elisabeth R. Finch was bad. But we had no idea just how horrible it really was until we screened Peacock’s three-episode Anatomy of Lies documentary (now streaming).
Over the course of the three hours, the limited series hits us with one whopper after another, foremost among them being the lie that Finch was treated for chondrosarcoma, the type of cancer that she gave Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox on ABC’s long-running medical drama. To sell her hard-luck story, Finch — who on Tuesday issued another mea culpa on social media — shaved her head,...

There are few things more embarrassing than being the victim of a scammer, especially publicly, and there are few things stranger than watching a docuseries about a scammer who personally scammed you.
Granted, I only spoke with Elisabeth Finch once about one episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” But the whole interview was about how she wrote an episode featuring a storyline inspired by her own brain cancer. The headline was “Grey’s Anatomy’s Big Cancer Story Was Based on Very Real Life.” I had no reason to doubt that a writer on one of the biggest shows on TV was telling me the truth. I had no reason to believe that even my headline was a big fat lie. Why would one ever assume someone was lying about brain cancer? It would be disrespectful to even think about it.
To lie about illness is one (weird) thing, but to lie...

Medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has been going on for several years now. Further, it also featured several interesting characters as well as storylines. But the one that happened behind the scenes caught the most attention. It involved a writer of the show who faked having cancer. Not only that, but she also went to great lengths in order to maintain this deception.

Warning: The following post contains allegations of sexual assault and child abuse and discussions of suicide. For years, Elisabeth Finch crafted compelling stories as one of the writers and producers of the hit ABC series Grey’s Anatomy. But she was telling tales off-screen, too, lying to colleagues about having cancer and enduring various other traumas that turned out to be deceptions. Vanity Fair writer Evgenia Peretz covered Finch’s story in a two-part exposé in May 2022 titled “Scene Stealer: The True Lies of Elisabeth Finch.” Now Peacock is covering the scandal in a three-part docuseries, Anatomy of Lies, with Peretz on board as co-director and executive producer. So, ahead of that docuseries’ October 15 debut, what do we know about the real Elisabeth Finch? As Peretz’s exposé recapped, Finch grew up in New Jersey, moved to California, and eventually got a job as a writer on True Blood. Then came...

The case of Elisabeth Finch was one that shocked the entertainment industry, and now a three-part docuseries will bring the tale to a wider audience.
On Tuesday, the streamer Peacock revealed that it is finalizing a three-part docuseries on the saga of the former Grey’s Anatomy writer and executive producer, whose harrowing story of bone cancer inspired at least one storyline on the ABC juggernaut until it was cast into doubt starting in 2022. Anatomy of Lies will chart “the rise and fall of Grey’s Anatomy star writer Elisabeth Finch, whose jaw-dropping lies fooled Hollywood for years,” Peacock stated in a press release.
Prior to 2022, Finch was known as a successful TV writer — she also worked for True Blood, No Ordinary Family and The Vampire Diaries — who had been open professionally and publicly about significant alleged personal struggles.
