Yoshifumi Tozuka’s recent manga Undead Unluck has officially reached its conclusion. The manga ran from 2020 and has completed five years this January, with Chapter 239 marking the finale in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #9.

As this beloved series ends, it leaves the fans with a single question – why is everything these days so short and compressed? Why has One Piece been left as the last surviving long-running manga of the Jump magazine’s golden era?
The end of Undead Unluck signifies a growing trend
The impressive legacy and trend of multi-decade manga seem to have ended, as no manga appears to have the potential nor the intention to hit even 500 chapters. The conclusion of Undead Unluck raises questions about whether Weekly Shonen Jump will ever see another 500+ chapters hit its pages.

Prior to its premiere, Sakamoto Days was one of 2025's most anticipated anime releases. Based on the Shōnen Jump manga of the same name by Yuto Suzuki, the anime series was expected to be one of the year's headlining shows, bringing the already popular series to a wider anime-watching audience. However, upon the reveal of the anime's first trailer and opening sequence, fans flocked to the internet to voice their complaints.
Sakamoto Days is an action comedy series that blends masterfully choreographed and intense combat sequences with its overall humorous, lighthearted tone. An adaptation of the manga would need to be expertly crafted in order to capture the correct feel of the series, and a large section of its fanbase believed the upcoming anime failed to do so before it even had the chance to air. Now, following the premiere of Sakamoto Days on Netflix, those fans have begun to change their tune.

There aren't too many good, realistic romance anime series out there. Many of the most popular romance anime series feature main characters with 10+ love interests all vying for their attention or other tired anime tropes that can fail to appeal to fans who aren't actively looking for those tropes. Luckily, in a genre with a ton of unrealistic love stories, there are still a few that center their premises on realism. Blue Box is exactly that. At its core, it is a fresh, unique, simple series with lovable main characters and a realistic plot.
The series stars high school first-year Taiki Inomata as he decides to go after his crush, Chinatsu, a second-year student who isn't initially reciprocal of his feelings. After a series of unforeseen events, she moves in with Taiki's family to continue her dreams of taking her basketball team to nationals. On paper, it might not seem like a realistic premise,...

Anime has a unique way of capturing emotions and weaving them into unforgettable stories. Some romance anime delve into heartfelt dramas filled with tears and angst, while others embrace lighthearted rom-com vibes, showing viewers just how delightful love can be.

While Taiki and Chinatsu’s adorable relationship and moments stole the spotlight, Blue Box‘s creator revealed they never intended the plot to focus solely on the two lovebirds or even on them ending up together.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Undead Unluck's final arc.Undead Unluck is inarguably one of the most popular Shōnen Jump manga to come out of the 2020s. While it’s never reached the same heights as other manga from this period like Sakamoto Days, Blue Box, and especially not Jujutsu Kaisen, the great character writing and creative writing have nonetheless made it a hit with fans and critics alike, especially after the anime helped it reach a wider audience.
Undead Unluck has been an excellent addition to the Shōnen Jump lineup for years, but its time in the magazine is slowly ending. Anyone who’s been caught up with the manga will know that it’s been heading toward its finale for quite some time now, but according to recent reports, Undead Unluck’s final chapter might be happening sooner than anyone could have predicted. In 2024, anime more than ever has felt like a place to escape to. The medium, ever a canvas for the fantastical and the weirds, was defined in 2024 by high-fantasy adventures like “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” or “Delicious in Dungeon,” shows that created lavish worlds of fantasy and adventure that nonetheless felt real and intimate in how vigorously they were constructed and depicted. It’s hard not to read a bit into it how, in a year where the collective international mood was one of deep fatigue, anime seemed more interested in exploring other worlds than studying our own.
Of course, there were plenty of great anime from varying shades of genres that released across 2024. There were glitzy show business psychological dramas like “Oshi No Ko,” intimate sports romances like “Blue Box,” and occult horror sci-fi action romantic comedies like “Dan Da Dan.” What set the good shows from the great shows this year,...

I got my friend and I into Haikyu!! properly earlier this year, and immediately became enthralled by its approachable yet brilliant premise, of the lovable teamwork of Karasuno High School's volleyball team. While the series prominently focuses on Shōyō Hinata, an energetic and short middle blocker for Karasuno with aspirations to play like his idol, the Little Giant. While the series is phenomenal and bingeworthy, as its adaptation will conclude after the final film, I couldn't help but think of my true favorite sports manga-turned anime now streaming, Blue Box, and what it offers.
Blue Box, much like Haikyu!! follows its athlete protagonist as he strives for greatness among his school's best athletes, and in Taiki Inomata's case, it's with his badminton team, the world's fastest racket sport. While Taiki and the Eimei Academy badminton team push for their best players and doubles teams to reach the nationals, another crucial...

As Taiki Inomata's ambitions meet a cruel roadblock in Blue Box, his indomitable spirit prevents him from fading altogether in the face of recent adversity. Despite a recent crushing defeat preventing his advancement to the nationals and joining Chinatsu, Taiki doesn't lose sight of his chances for self-improvement. In the release of Blue Box episode #9, Taiki's resolve meets a reasonable limit as the compounding stress of both competitive sports and his schoolwork causes him to fall under the weather.
As a sports, coming-of-age, and romance anime, Blue Box renders a compelling and grounded vision of teenage life, told through the internalized thoughts and outward actions of Taiki and his classmates at Eimei Academy. But it also presents the reasonable limits of even star athletes when they've pushed themselves too far, and crucially, who comes through to care for them in these moments. Sakamoto Days is one of the biggest manga running in Shnen Jump right now, and thats created a lot of hype for its upcoming anime. The manga boasts some of the most creative and all-around gorgeous action of any shnen manga, so if a competent anime studio found a way to bring that to life, it would solidify Sakamoto Days reputation as one of the best manga someone could read.
Theres been incredible hype for the Sakamoto Days anime, but thats started dying down for the worst reasons. The first full trailer for Sakamoto Days was recently released, which gave people their first extended look at what the anime would be like, and unfortunately, everything presented in the Sakamoto Days trailer has people feeling skeptical about the animes quality. Some of the concerns are more exaggerated than others, but unfortunately, its far too easy to see why people are feeling nervous about its quality.

Amid the great animes from Fall of 2024, Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is definitely one of the most underrated ones streaming on Netflix, being overshadowed by popular series like Ranma 1/2 and Blue Box. The anime produced by Madhouse is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed manga by Uoto, nominated for multiple awards and winner of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2022 against highly appraised works like Jojolion and Oshi no Ko. However, Orb has flown under the radar of many Western fans because of its historical setting.
Contrastingly, Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is proving its potential to reach the audience in Japan, standing out among other series not only because of its premise about the heliocentric model, with an original take on the conflict between Polish astronomers and the Inquisition, which isnt everyones cup of tea, but by captivating viewers with its deeper message about human curiosity,...

Anime on Netflix is thriving lately thanks to key major offerings joining its library, the latest of which being Dragon Ball Daima. However, according to Netflix Tudum's Global Top 10 for non-English TV shows from October 21 to October 27, 2024, Dragon Ball Daima, Dan Da Dan, and Ranma all feature on the latest confirmed chart. With Daima joining the platform and quickly seizing the #2 spot as its first week on the chart, it joins Dan Da Dan which places at #3 and Ranma at #6, each enjoying their third weeks in the top 10 as a major win for anime on Netflix.

Blue Box is a new anime that gives more than what the audience had anticipated. From back-to-back history and romance series released in the previous seasons, the Fall anime season is introducing love through sports. Netflix's newest romance anime, Blue Box, provides a coming-of-age story that uniquely conveys the awkward stage of high school romance through the lens of two passionate athletes, making it stand out from the rest of this season.
This romance and sports anime is based on Kouji Miuras hit manga Ao no Hako (Blue Box). The series has been serialized since April 2021 in Weekly Shonen Jump, highlighting its great influence on manga readers, which proves that its heartfelt story is worthwhile. However, it is not only the story itself that makes this series worth all the time and effort.

While Jujutsu Kaisen has had a difficult year with the fans as its conclusion has not gone over well with everyone, it's a fact of life that Weekly Shonen Jump readers seek out the next big thing: enter Kagurabachi in late 2023. I was there when the series debuted its edgy protagonist, unsurprised at the memes mocking his overly serious tone and curious about what drew in readers beyond the admittedly spectacular action panels. While it took me a proper year to give Kagurabachi a chance, I'm glad I did, as it has matured into an excellent series.
Takeru Hokazono's manga doesn't stray too much from the battle shnen formula, which can be a tough sell for readers growing fatigued with its evergreen potential for new offerings. However, these worries are often remedied by a quick glimpse at Kagurabachi's sales performance. While I'm not the type to pick up a series simply because it's popular,...

It's been an interesting year for me as a Weekly Shonen Jump manga fanatic, enjoying Shueisha's stories since the old days of Viz Media's short-lived Shnen Jump magazine. Gone are my days as a shaggy-haired pre-teen cracking open the latest localized chapters of Naruto, One Piece, and Hikaru no Go as I turn toward the future with heavy hitters like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia bowing out. Thus begins a predictable panic, wondering what will carry the publication, but the truth is Weekly Shnen Jump is not in danger, thanks to factors including anime and years of precedents.
A major factor that typically helps new shnen manga succeed is a popular anime adaptation, with recent adaptations of Weekly Shnen Jump's The Elusive Samurai and Shnen Jump+'s Dan Da Dan serving as strong examples. For viewers in the West, much of that is derived from hype over...

The romance of Blue Box is certainly the central draw of the series, yet it's endearingly intertwined with the experiences of its high school athletes and their journeys of self-improvement. Taiki Inomata has taken major strides toward asserting himself as an up-and-coming badminton player to even be recognized by his seniors, but not without some lighthearted mockery and minor setbacks. But in Blue Box episode #4, as Chinatsu Kano continues to get closer to Taiki, the two figure out their dynamic while each prepare to aspire toward the nationals.
Blue Box balances its sports and human connection with a healthy dose of comedy, often creating relatable yet hilarious scenarios as Taiki continues to overthink his earnest, budding affection for Chinatsu. The pair are more compatible than either perhaps realize, but with a year between them and their connection largely kept a secret from most of the school, Taiki continues to try...

It's no surprise that fans adore Dan Da Dan's anime as it has dominated otaku discourse in social media circles due to Science Saru's breathtaking adaptation, but it's also climbing the charts in terms of viewership. On top of the series featuring numerous new additions to Crunchyroll's Fall 2024 anime season, Dan Da Dan is also simulcasting to Netflix weekly, meaning access for viewers across the world's largest paid streaming service. FlixPatrol shows that Dan Da Dan has broken into the #7 spot among Netflix's top 10 most popular TV shows as of October 14, 2024.
This is a major coup for Netflix as it expands its anime presence. With another delightful Fall 2024 Weekly Shonen Jump adaptation, Blue Box, Dan Da Dan shows how seriously impressive and globally popular anime can become. While Crunchyroll remains uncontested as the most popular dedicated anime subscription service, Netflix is paying attention to what the viewers want and reaping the benefits.

Netflix’s Blue Box offers a heartwarming blend of sports drama and high school romance. Adapted from Kouji Miura’s ongoing manga of the same name, the anime series debuted in early 2024 with its talented cast and crew bringing the private school adventures of Taiki and Chinatsu to animated life.
Set firmly within the slice of life genre, Blue Box follows Taiki’s journey as a promising badminton player at Eimei Private High. Yet beneath the surface, there’s more to Taiki than just athletics. Like any teenager, he struggles with self-doubt and navigating relationships both on and off the court. It’s here that basketball star Chinatsu enters the picture, igniting feelings that complicate matters further as Taiki pursues victory in sports and love.

In the anime industry, studios are no strangers to adapting long-running manga into anime series with the commitment that viewers will want to keep watching. While in the past, shonen anime like One Piece had long episodic seasons and others had a standard of 20 to 25, recently, seasons are getting shorter. The much-anticipated series, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, has 13 episodes per season. The upcoming adaptation of Dandadan is listed for only 12 episodes for its debut season. However, Blue Box, a new sports romance anime, will have 25 episodes.

Blue Box is already doing something right that any shonen anime needs to implement into their formula. A solid narrative needs room to breathe and to keep a natural pace where the character development makes sense. It also garners more curiosity for the anime and in the end, the viewer feels like there’s a payoff.

With October marking the start of spooky season, it’s only fitting that the Fall anime season has kicked off with an adaptation of arguably the scariest manga of all time. On September 28, Adult Swim premiered the first episode of “Uzumaki,” an adaptation of Juni Ito’s 1998 horror manga about a town struggling under a curse that twists the populace and the landscapes into bizarre spiral shapes. Infamous for its disturbing imagery and frequently referenced on the internet, “Uzumaki” has never been adapted for animation until now. Unfortunately, our beloved protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, never accomplishes the top spot in the Heroes Ranking, which many fans were enthralled to witness.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Ichi the Witch chapter #1.With a slew of Shonen Jump manga either getting canceled or running their course, a new wave of serializations has begun, starting with Osamu Nishi and Shiro Usazakis Ichi the Witch. The series was advertised as a fantasy story set in a world where only women can use magic until Ichi, a man, suddenly finds himself with magical abilities, much to everyones surprise.
As exciting as it was to have Osamu Nishi from Iruma-Kun and Shiro Usazaki from Act-Age collaborating on a manga, Ichi the Witch was still treated cautiously before its release, both because of how often new manga fail and because of the clichd nature of its premise. Following its debut, though, Ichi the Witch has quickly garnered praise from fans for its writing and artwork, and its already proving to be a groundbreaking story in all areas.
