Exclusive: Ashley Moore (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Camren Bicondova (Gotham) will topline Festival of the Living Dead, a Tubi film inspired by the classic 1968 zombie pic Night of the Living Dead co-written and directed by George A. Romero.
In the new horror film directed by Jen & Sylvia Soska it has been over 50 years since Night of the Living Dead’s original zombie attack and the horrific event has become the subject of morbid nostalgia. Looking for fun, Ash (Moore) and her friends attend the Festival of the Living Dead, but it is disrupted when a blast of radioactive space dust hits the festival and they must defend themselves or be devoured by the living dead.

Of course, horror is well known for having killer puppets. Depending on how you define ‘puppet’, there’s been Chucky, Annabelle, Jigsaw and others in films like Poltergeist, Krampus and Dolls. Puppet Killer is the first I remember to feature a fluffy pink puppet though.
Hat puppet and it’s owner are big horror movie fans though and so obviously end up in a cabin in the woods with a murderer (guess who) out to kill the group of friends staying there. It’s predictable but it’s supposed to be. This is a movie clearly made by people who like their old school horror movies, and as this one is a comedy, they have some fun with it and the usual horror movie clichés.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth movie in the franchise, is for a number of reasons not an installment remembered fondly. A primary bone of contention is Danielle Harris not reprising her role as Jamie Lloyd, who she had played as a child in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.
The problem was that although years had passed since the release of the previous movie, Lloyd was only 17 when filming was to begin, making her legally still a minor and thus greatly restricting the number of hours she was able to work. To get around this, Harris went through the process of emancipation at great financial cost to herself, which could have resulted in her participation were it not for further complications.
In the movie, Jamie is killed at the end of the first act, whereupon the focus shifts...

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Vendetta (part of the Vengeance season), the Soska Sisters reflect on their life-long love of wrestling, getting revenge, and their next, long-waited original film Bob.
You’re back on Horror Channel. Excited?
Jen: Deliriously. We love the Horror Channel! It’s our favourite place to be. Thank you for having us back!
Sylvia: Love the Horror Channel. It feels a little odd because you guys usually are the first to show our work and Vendetta showed up late. I won’t even begin to mention the long-awaited Hellevator.
Finally, your UK fans get to see Vendetta on British TV!
Jen: I’m so happy it Vendetta has finally invaded British airwaves. The UK has always been so gracious and supportive of us and our work leading back to the Dead Hooker in a Trunk days. It’s only fitting to have Vendetta follow suit.

The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.
In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, they’re Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule,...

Canada’s horror auteur twins, the Soska Sisters, remade their idol David Cronenberg’s earliest and grisliest film.
Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska have been delivering artistic haymakers since they started their careers. It was back then that they self-financed, wrote, directed and starred in the the delicately titled Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Since then, they’ve also created their best and most acclaimed movie to date, American Mary (2012), while also directing a segment for The ABCs of Death 2 (2014), and two movies for WWE Films, the slasher sequel See No Evil 2 (2014) and the action thriller Vendetta (2015).
Their movies are marked by a decidedly feminist point-of-view as well as a gleeful, often outrageous use of gore and visceral horror, so it’s no surprise that they have now taken on the risk of remaking Rabid, one of the early films by their idol and fellow Canadian,...

Coming close to death gave her the power to be unstoppable. New York City police officer Jane Vasko was nearly killed while undercover, but she bounced back as the vengeful Painkiller Jane in the comic book series of the same name. 2016 is hereby declared the year of the female filmmaker.
A few exceptions aside, for several years, a spot in the director’s chair seemed like a seat reserved only for those in the boys’ club. However, a revolution has been quietly brimming beneath the surface, with more and more women stepping behind the camera as of late and genre films leading the way in this massive reconstruction. Game changers like Jennifer Kent, Marjane Satrapi and Veronika Franz have been stepping up and proving themselves as not only worthy contenders when it comes to noteworthy women who make movies, but equally as skilled as any male photographer.
While there are many exciting projects on the horizon to be helmed by talented ladies, this list is dedicated to a few of the most striking pictures that are set to release soon. Read on to learn about these thrilling new prospects, and find...

While there has been talking of redoing David Cronenberg films over the past few years — a "Shivers" remake was brewing a while back, and Cronenberg himself had a new take on "The Fly" that 20th Century Fox passed on — none have come to pass. But that changes this summer. Read More: Retrospective: The Films Of David Cronenberg Filmmaking duo Sylvia and Jen Soska (“American Mary,” “Dead Hooker in a Trunk” and “See No Evil 2”) will be directing a remake of "Rabid." Cronenberg's fourth feature follows a woman (played by porn star Marilyn Chambers in the original) who survives a motorcycle crash, and receives life-saving skin grafts, only to develop a phallic stinger that feeds on blood, turning its victims into zombies. And things get more horrific from there. There's no word yet on casting, but with filming gearing up to start in the summer, more news should be coming soon.

Sister directors Jen and Sylvia Soska ("American Mary," "See No Evil 2") have come on board to helm a remake of David Cronenberg's 1977 Canadian zombie thriller "Rabid" for Somerville House Releasing.
Porn star Marilyn Chambers played the lead role in the original of a woman injured in a motorcycle accident who undergoes experimental plastic surgery and develops a stinger that she uses to feed on people’s blood - triggering an outbreak of a rabies-like epidemic that turns its victims into bloodthirsty zombies.
One of Cronenberg's earliest works, the filmmaker went on to the likes of more well-known terror tales like "Scanners," "The Brood," "Videodrome" and "The Fly".
John Vidette, Paul Lalonde and Michael Walker will produce. Filming will take place in the summer in Canada.

Ahead of the Blu-ray's release, we have trailers and clips from both films, including the iconic blood-drenched prom queen crowning and Rachel's glass-shattering house party interruption.

Enthrallingly portraying a powerful protagonist who isn’t afraid to go after what they want, regardless of the harrowing consequences they may face, can be a challenge for actors, particularly when the character is susceptible to vulnerabilities throughout an intense horror film. But acclaimed genre actress Danielle Harris once again proved her talent of effortlessly showing a determined victim’s strengths and will to survive in ‘See No Evil 2,’ which was helmed by acclaimed twin horror directors, Jen and Sylvia Soska. The sequel to the 2006 horror thriller, ‘See No Evil,’ which is one of the filmmakers’ latest directorial efforts, once again showcases their signature cinematic theme-when a compelling and dynamic [ Read More ]

Sometimes, high school can be a virtual hell. Mileage varies by the individual, of course, but in a place where acceptance at a lunch table can be akin to finding an oasis in a desert, there's more weight on the shoulders of many teens than just their backpack straps. Such is the case for Ewen High School student Carrie White, the telekinetic titular character of Stephen King's seminal debut novel published in 1974.
Carrie has been adapted for the screen multiple times for multiple generations, and Scream Factory is giving the Generation Y versions a high-definition upgrade, with their Carrie and The Rage: Carrie 2 double feature Blu-ray now set to hit shelves with an official release date and bonus features, including two new audio commentaries.

Every year internationally renowned identical twin filmmakers, the Soska Sisters ("American Mary," "See No Evil 2"), invite you to bleed for an incredibly good cause: Women inHorror’s PSA for a Massive Blood Drive . Donating blood is something many people find off-putting and terrifying. By using humor, innovation, and provocative imagery, this PSA will encourage viewers to face their fears and donate to the cause.
For this occasion, the Soska Sisters are launching an anthology of horror shorts directed by celebrated women filmmakers from around the world.
Women in Horror Recognition Month (WiHM) assists female genre artists in gaining opportunities, exposure, and education through altruistic events, printed material, articles, interviews, and online support. The collaborative vision is a world wherein all individuals have equal opportunity to create, share, and engage in freedom of expression.
The Soska Sisters and Women in Horror have invited award winning Canadian filmmaker Patricia Chica to present her darkly comic short
"Ripe N’ Bloody" to be included in this anthology of films from some of the most innovative, unique, and irreverent female directors across the globe.
“I am a huge fan of the Soska Twins’ work, so I’m thrilled to be part of this project which supports two causes that are dear to my heart: the empowerment of Women in Film and Blood Donation," says Patricia Chica.
“I started getting involved with blood donation when my mother was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and needed a lot of transfusions in order to survive. It made me realize how important each litter of blood was for the survival of my own mother and all of the patients at the hospital who were suffering from similar conditions. My recent film"Ceramic Tango" dealt with the issue of blood and HIV awareness”, explains the director.
“This PSA is not only aligned with my purpose of making films that serve society and elevate the viewers' consciousness but it was morbidly fun to make! ”, concludes Patricia Chica.
"Ripe N’ Bloody" is a Canadian production that was written by award winning filmmaker-screenwriter Kamal John Iskander ("Jesus Comes to Town," "Montréal Girls"), produced by Patricia Chica, Grace Santos (Odessa, Silk), and veteran Byron A. Martin ("Serpent's Lullaby," "My Babysitter is a Vampire"). The short was executive produced by Tara Kurtz ("Blue Weekend,""Something About Her"), co-executive produced by Adonai Interiano of Hni Productions, and artist Morris Umali. Practical effects were created by Danny McCarthy of 800 Lb Guerilla. Visual effects were created by Henry Lipatov, Anton Golovchenko, and the crew at Fame Cube based in the Ukraine. Director of photography Imad Rhayem, production designer Gabrielle Giraud, and makeup artist Valentina Badaracco round out the production team. Starring Leonard Waldner, Stephen Brewster, Andrea Fletcher, Keira McCarthy, and introducing Marco Reilly.
An expanded version of the short will be presented on the festival circuit during the 2015/2016 season.

When I first heard about Jen and Sylvia Soska (re: Soska Twins/The Soskas), I admit I had never seen their work. I had zero idea about who they were, or how they had come to Indie Horror prominence, yet once I started hearing their names, it became almost a daily occurrence.
Something about this concerned me, though, because the first thing I heard about them was, “Have you seen 'American Mary'? They're awesome for female Directors! Their stuff can lean a bit extreme feminist at times, but, they're not bad, at all!” – and that didn't quite sit well, with me. People often overlook the all-important resiliency of those who appear not to have the determination to achieve what they want in life. Jacob Goodnight, the brutal mass murderer in the 2006 slasher film, ‘See No Evil,’ was driven to commit his heinous crimes from the manipulations of his mother. But the criminal proved his emotional resolve in going after what he truly wants in the horror movie’s new sequel, ‘See No Evil 2,’ which is now available On Demand, Digital HD, Blu-Ray and DVD. WWE wrestler Glenn ‘Kane’ Jacobs, who reprised the role of the ruthless killer from the original film, also showcased his emotional versatility in the follow-up, which [ Read More ]

When See No Evil 2 was announced, the horror world let out a collective groan. The first look at Jacob Goodnight (played by WWE’s Kane) was a generic, substandard affair that was as cookie cutter as it comes and offered little more than an overtly perverse ending. Then word got out that the up-and-coming Soska Sisters were to direct, the masterminds behind the truly disturbing American Mary, and scream queen Danielle Harris was to take center stage as protagonist Amy. What was once almost a surefire miss now had potential, and with the addition of genre vet Katharine Isabelle, it seemed like it was set to fire on all cylinders.

In 2006, WWE Studios released “See No Evil,” a horror film directed by music video veteran Gregory Dark. It starred Kane as psychotic serial killer Jacob Goodnight, whose mommy issues and strict religious upbringing led him to descend further into madness. In that film, he offed teenager after teenager in the hotel that his family owned. It was gritty, dark, gruesome and bloody and earned somewhat of a cult following on home video. It had its flaws, such as a muddled story, but also featured some incredibly unique and original kills.
As much effort as WWE put into promoting the film, it allowed it to fade into history, failing to recognize that the horror genre was hurting for a new iconic slasher. Hatchet, created and directed by Adam Green, satisfied fans’ appetites but there was still that desire for a fresh new character to emerge and take the genre by storm.

La dolce vita (Criterion Collection) Blu-ray I've already posted my review of Criterion's new Blu-ray release of Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, which was the first entry in my Best Movies series earlier this year. In short, it's a wonderful release, but if you prefer specific details click here.
Snowpiercer Snowpiercer is something of a cult online hit, but as I said in my review, "It's a fun film with some interesting ideas and given the scope I'm happy to have seen it on the big screen, but in the grand scheme of things it's a relatively minor work." I'm still happy I saw it in theaters, but when the Blu-ray arrived here at Ros-hq I can't say I had the slightest interest in revisiting it.
