Heath Ledger came up with the idea for the music video in 2007 while on a boating trip with family in his native Australia. He contacted Isaac Brock, pitched the idea to him, and they decided to collaborate with an art collective which Ledger was a part of called The Masses. The project was put on the back burner for a year until the untimely death of Ledger. Brock and The Masses finished the film with the blueprints Ledger left stating "he came up with everything down to the last detail." In turn, Ledger posthumously received a director's credit.
