The most recent entry in the so-called Poohniverse, and the first one not to feature Pooh, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, has arrived. With Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel both being steaming piles of, well, poo, I was going to skip this. But surprisingly, I started hearing quite a few positive things about it.

While most of the films that director Scott Chambers, aka Scott Jeffrey has been involved with are borderline unwatchable fare like Dragon Fury, he does have the occasional entertaining effort like The Gardener to his credit, so it wasn’t entirely beyond the realm of possibility that Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare would actually be decent. Hoping for the best, I decided to give it a chance.

From Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare is now in theaters until January 15, 2025, only from Iconic Events Releasing, and the team has provided Bloody Disgusting with a bloody exclusive clip to whet your appetite this morning.

The brand new images present a drastically different depiction of Peter Pan’s close ally, Tink, and his sworn enemy, Hook. More interestingly, EW revealed character details behind the new version of Tinkerbell.

The UK Global Screen Fund’s (Ukgsf) next round of awardees from its distribution strand of support includes The Penguin Lessons, Bring Them Down, The Salt Path and Kneecap.

The Ukgsf has issued 18 new awards, administered by the BFI, to support international opportunities for the UK’s independent screen sector. Ukgsf is financed through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms), and the awards see a further £413,995 allocated through the £7m per year fund’s international distribution strand.

The international distribution strand is now managed by Jordan Allwood, who joined the team in October from UK sales agent Independent Entertainment and replacesFrancesca Walker.

Facing homelessness and the devastating news of Moth’s terminal illness diagnosis, the couple embark on a journey along England’s rugged coastal path that will test their physical and emotional limits.

Traversing over six hundred miles, Ray and Moth confront unforgiving terrain, fickle weather, and unfriendly strangers. They battle tiredness, hunger, and the advance of Moth’s condition with nothing but backpacks and tents between them and the elements.

Bafta’s talent programme, Bafta Elevate, has launched an initiative for creatives in documentary and specialist factual from underrepresented backgrounds.

Bafta has partnered with men’s fashion brand dunhill to deliver the two-year programme aimed at mid-senior development producers, producers, directors and producer-directors.

The 20 participants selected – 50% of which will be women - will have access to networking and industry exposure alongside a host of wider knowledge-building and focused professional development over two years.

The Toronto Film Festival kicked off September 5 with a multi-move opening night that included David Gordon Green’s family comedy Nutcrackers starring Ben Stiller. It kicked off a slate of world premieres and buzzy movies across 11 days for the 49th edition of one of North America’s biggest film festivals.

Toronto – The difficult journey of the couple at the center of “The Salt Path” doesn’t seem like a true story at first. There is a lyrical flow to their revelations. So much so that each stop on their 630-mile hike seems crafted as an allegory to how perilous life can be. Assuming you were unaware of Raynor Winn‘s best-selling autobiographical novel of the same name, the end cards may be something of a surprise.

It is a deceptively simple premise for a two-hour feature film. A married couple who had planned their retirement in a B&b are, due to dire financial circumstances and bum luck, forced out of their home at a point that is, on the surface at least, completely devastating. With their kids now off at school, they make the decision to pack up what they can in their backpacks and take off on the Salt Path, a 630-mile stretch from Dorset to Somerset on the Southwestern English Coast. To make matters worse, the husband has just been diagnosed with a terminal neurodegenerative disease, but they are bound and determined to complete this adventure, perhaps the last of their lives because they have no other choice.

Oh, and it is a 100% true story.

Exquisitely directed by four-time Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott with a screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (She Said) based on Raynor Winn’s 2018 memoir, The Salt Path is an inspiring story of love and resilience in a situation that might otherwise break most people, especially a couple entering their later years with little hope against an unforgiving system. This is certainly not the first film based on someone setting out on an ambitious walk for various personal reasons. Martin Sheen starred as a man tackling El Camino de Santiago trail in 2010’s spiritual The Way; Reese Witherspoon played the depressed Cheryl Strayed in Wild, the 2014 true story of her 1100-mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail; and Mark Wahlberg starred in another true story, 2020’s Joe Bell, about a father who walks across America in protest of the bullying of his son.

All of these films, and other similar stories of determination against all odds, were admirable attempts but not always successful movies as sometimes dramatizing the journey can be a little repetitive. Where Elliott succeeds with a fine Lenkiewicz template, is getting us instantly engaged in the travails of Ray (Gillian Anderson) and Moth (Jason Isaacs), a couple who could be you or me as life hits them hard in the gut and the Salt Path becomes somehow a cure, a spiritual redemption however temporary, to set them on a new path (literally and figuratively) in life. Is it an adventure? Is it insanity or an existential mid-life crisis? In some ways, it is reminiscent of the premise of John Cheever’s The Swimmer and its film adaptation, in which Burt Lancaster swam from one neighbor’s pool to another, encountering various people along the way. But moreover, it is the tale of these two born to come together to experience life together, no matter how hard that gets.

After unreasonably being evicted from their B&b, having their bank account dried up due to legal expenses and losing their farm, this likable couple decides to fullfil a dream and live off the land as it were by embarking with just chump change on an ambitious walk covering 630 breathtaking miles, even as Moth has had a pretty devastating diagnosis. This might stop most people in their tracks, but in this case only sets this couple off in theirs.

The story from this point on becomes episodic as they make their way, stopping at various points and towns, interacting with the locals and relatives, bleeding an Atm dry just for enough to get food, and even for Ray getting a job shearing sheep. Nothing hugely life-threatening happens along the way, no sudden tidal wave or earthquakes, none of the usual movie tropes, but rather a love story of two people making the most of where life has brought them to this point. Of course to make this work, you need actors of the extraordinary grace and talent of Anderson and Isaacs who are entirely believable as this pair staring down nature as an antidote to the cards life has dealt. Both are excellent in essentially a two-hander, although they get support along the way from various people they meet or stay with.

With Helene Louvart’s excellent cinematography a real plus, The Salt Path is a cinematic journey worth taking. It had its world premiere Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Producers are Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley, Lloyd Levin and Beatriz Levin.

From the very first moments of the “The Salt Path,” frantically capturing the vestiges of one middle-aged couple’s life swept out to sea by a turbulent tide of saltwater and sorrow, director Marianne Elliott’s inspirational drama chooses a deliberately deceptive path and gets off on the wrong foot. It’s not until later that it’s discovered that this in-media-res attention grabber, which has shaded our view of these downtrodden souls’ transformative journey, is a distorted reality. It’s used to manipulate us into anticipating that their watershed moment will be dire, when it’s really their saving grace. Yet with understated performances from Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, as well as immersive land and soundscapes that enhance the thematic pull, this portrait of loss, humanity and rebirth makes it worth the emotional investment.

Chief among them is Jason Reitman’s SNL opening-night pic Saturday Night, from Sony which will get its Canadian premiere in the filmmaker’s homeland. With that deduction, this must mean Saturday Night is going to Telluride.

And you thought Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years ago? Well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On Swift Horses. The pic also stars Diego Calva. The Daniel Minahan-directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. She embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Francis Ford Coppola’s divisive sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” will have its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

TIFF has added that movie and several others, including Luca Guadadgnino’s “Queer” starring Daniel Craig and Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” led by Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, to its 2024 lineup. In total, 276 films will screen at this year’s festival, which is running from Sept. 5-15.

In addition to official selection titles, TIFF has programmed special screenings of Damien Chazelle’s 2014 film “Whiplash,” as well as Mina Shum’s 1994 comedy “Double Happiness.”

The Toronto Film Festival has made its final lineup announcement for its 2024 edition, to include a North American premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian epic Megalopolis and a world bow for Driven director Nick Hamm’s medieval action drama William Tell.

Both movies, including the Cannes-bowing Megalopolis, will get a Gala premiere at Roy Thomson Hall. William Tell, set in 1307 and adapting Friedrich Schiller’s play, stars Danish actor Claes Bang as huntsman Tell, Ben Kingsley as King Albrecht, Rafe Spall as Stauffacher and Jonathan Pryce as Attinghausen.

Toronto, which will feature in all 278 films for its 49th edition, has also booked Special Presentations slots for another 12 titles. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” have been added to the lineup of the Toronto International Film Festival, which made its final programming announcement on Tuesday before posting the 2024 schedule.

The films were part of a group of 19 titles that brought the total number of movies at this year’s festival to 276.

The wildly ambitious and excessive “Megalopolis,” starring Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, was one of the most talked-about and most divisive titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. “The Room Next Door” is Almodovar’s first English-language feature, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore; it will premiere just prior to TIFF at the Venice Film Festival. “Queer” is Guadagnino’s adaptation of a 1985 William S. Burroughs novel, and another Venice premiere.

Exclusive: Here’s a big one in the European M&a world. Beta Film has taken a stake in Number 9 TV, a new small screen subsidiary of Carol and Living producer Number 9 Films.

Number 9 TV will be helmed by Kate Laffey, who has left her role running Paramount TV International Studios in the UK. She becomes Head of TV as the London indie expands its business to series.

Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed. Beta said the partnership will combine Number 9’s creative expertise with The Swarm seller’s experience in developing, financing and distributing TV and film. Beta has around 30 labels including Sweden’s Unlimited Stories, X Filme Creative Pool and Italy’s Cross Productions. Beta already has several ties to the UK TV market, for instance distributing series such as Professor T and Sam Heughan-starrer The Couple Next Door. This new partnership with Number 9 joins one...

Heading into Cannes, where it has four films in official selection and three projects participating in the Great 8 showcase, BBC Film has unveiled further details about its upcoming slate.

Among new projects in advanced development is Remi Weekes’ follow-up to His House, which is being produced by Tanya Segatchian and John Woodward’s Bright Star. Details for the untitled feature are being kept under wraps but BBC Film director Eva Yates told Screen: “It’s not a horror.”

Also in advanced development is Raine Allen-Miller’s second feature after Rye Lane, a south London-set heist comedy that she has also written.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has unveiled the line-up of speakers and events taking place at the Cannes UK Pavilion, including talent talks with Santosh filmmaker Sandhya Suri and Birds and Kinds Of Kindness director of photography Robbie Ryan, as well as panel discussions on the historic UK independent tax credit and a conversation with representatives from UK film funders from across the nations and regions.

Suri will be joined by UK producer Mike Goodridge from Good Chaos and Eva Yates, director of BBC Film, to share the journey behind Suri’s narrative director debut, which plays in Un Certain Regard.

Bankside Films has boarded world sales on UK writer-director Thea Gajić’s feature debut, Surviving Earth, ahead of its screening in the Cannes Great 8 showcase, and unleashed a first-look image.

Surviving Earth is based on a true story. A talented harmonica player arrives in the UK in the 1990s after fleeing the conflict in Yugoslavia. He rebuilds his life in Bristol, working as a counsellor and forming a Balkan band with friends from his work. When traumas from his past life start to resurface, his life starts to fracture, with his beloved only daughter the hardest hit.

Paris-based sales powerhouse Playtime has taken on sales for Iraqi-Danish filmmaker Jahfar Muataz’s debut feature Crossing Lines and will launch the title at May’s Cannes market.

Currently shooting, the film zooms in on a reformed criminal counseling gang members looking to leave the world of crime whose nephew disappears, forcing him to seek help from his past connections in Copenhagen’s criminal underworld as his past resurfaces.

Muataz wrote the script with Babak Vakili that Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, co-ceo of Playtime calls “a page turner” and says the film is “engaging, with a fresh tone, that can speak to people across borders.

The BFI is once again heading to the Cannes Market with its so-called Great 8 — a selection of projects from first and second-time filmmakers that it will present to international buyers.

Now in its seventh year, the 2024 Great 8 showcase is funded and produced by the BFI and the British Council, with support from the Great Britain & Northern Ireland campaign, BBC Film, and Film4. Anderson is the latest name to join the likes of Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), and Greta Lee on the cast. Exclusive: Ted Lasso star James Lance and Hermione Norris have joined Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs in the feature adaptation of Raynor Winn’s inspirational bestselling memoir The Salt Path.

The film marks the screen directing debut of Marianne Elliott, the Olivier- and Tony Award-winning director of stage hits War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Company and Death of a Salesman, as Deadline revealed in May.

The Salt Path follows married couple Raynor and Moth Winn, portrayed by Anderson and Isaacs, who, after being evicted from their farm, embark on a long and winding trek along the South West Coast path in UK’s picturesque Devon and Cornwall.

Lance has been cast as Grant, one of a handful of the disparate characters who cross paths with Raynor and Moth during their year long journey.

AFC Richmond brought some of its top players and an esteemed journalist to the Monte-Carlo Television Festival after the soccer team at the heart of Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” concluded its final season.

Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, Cristo Fernandez and James Lance bid a fond farewell to the show in Monaco. But is it truly good-bye? When asked about it, Harris replied: “We’re still pretty much together. We were in L.A. last week, and now we’re in Monte-Carlo. I suppose we’re enjoying the fruits of our labor.” Lance chimed in, saying: “The show may be over, but we’re just getting started, aren’t we? We’re still here, having a great time.”
