The stats for Netflix's top 10 non-English TV shows list from the final week of December (Dec. 30 - Jan. 5) are in, and you won't believe what older yet beloved Japanese show made the cut. It's none other than Alice in Borderland, often referred to by some as the Japanese Squid Game.

In a new Netflix press release, the streamer shared all 10 non-English shows that earned a spot. The series that made the list were the most popular non-English shows during the period of Dec. 30 to Jan. 5. As expected, at the No. 1 spot sat Squid Game season 2 with 58. 2 million views for that week. Since the brand-new second season had just recently come out, many people were also going back to rewatch the first season. This is why Squid Game season 1 ended up ranking at the No. 2 spot with 13.6 million views.

“Squid Game” Season 2 has become the No. 2 most popular non-English series in Netflix history.

The second installment of the Lee Jung-jae-led series brought in 126.2 million views in just 11 days on Netflix, ranking the No. 2 most-watched non-English series, behind just “Squid Game” Season 1. Amassing this many views in this time frame marks a new record for the streaming giant.

In the second week since its release, “Squid Game” Season 2 jumped to from No. 7 to No. 2 on the weekly most-watched non-English shows list, capturing 58.2 million views during the week of Dec. 30. Season 2’s success has also caused Netflix subscribers to return to its first installment. “Squid Game” Season 1 scored 13.6 million views during the week of Dec. 30, putting it as No. 2 on Netflix’s non-English TV charts.

To kick off 2025, Netflix has added a new slate of films to its streaming library, highlighted by Dune: Part Two. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster, which Consequence named the fourth best film of 2024, is streaming on the service as of January 1st.

Dune: Part Two, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and more, remains available to stream on Max. The first Dune movie can also be streamed on both Netflix and Max. Additionally, both films are available to purchase together in 4K Uhd.

Other new titles available to stream on Netflix as of January 1st include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire; Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga; Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1; The Watchers; Inception; Meet the Parents and its sequels Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers; Apollo 13; Love Actually; Schindler’s List; the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy; Rush Hour franchise; and Bruce Almighty.

Well, Netflix is delivering with some of their additions to their streaming catalogue on January 1, 2025!

The streamer is adding 36 movies on the first of the month, including titles like Interstellar, Love Actually, I Know What You Did Last Summer, 13 Going on 30, Notting Hill, The Net, and more fan fave titles.

If there’s a show you’ve been waiting years to return, chances are it’s coming back in 2025. From “Stranger Things” Season 5, which is expected to premiere later this year, to “Severance” Season 2, some of the biggest and buzziest shows on television are expected to make their returns in this new year.

Part of the reason for this big return has to do with the residual effects of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Those historic Hollywood effects delayed production across the board. While broadcast series were largely able to air new episodes in 2024, prestige streaming and cable shows — which typically take a bit longer to produce on average — needed a bit more time to bounce back.

The year is almost done, Netflix fans. Every month there are some changes to what the giant streams, but something about beginning a new year feels different. Even if you have seen some of the following shows before, you have never seen them in 2025. Not yet anyway.

Netflix goes extra-heavy with new releases at the start of January. There will be new releases throughout the month, but nothing like January 1. You might want to work your monthly calendar around that day alone.

I Know What You Did Last Summer...

Pain Hustlers and new seasons of Big Mouth and Elite are among the high-profile new projects debuting on Netflix in October.

Directed by David Yates, Pain Hustlers is a crime drama set in the world of pharmaceuticals. The film, which boasts a starry cast that includes Emily Blunt, Chris Evans and Andy García, debuts on Oct. 27.

On Oct. 20, Netflix launches the seventh season of Big Mouth. The penultimate season of the animated comedy heads to high school but the awkward moments and growing pains for Andrew Glouberman (John Mulaney) and Nick Birch (Nick Kroll) continue.

Also on Oct. 20, the seventh season of global hit Elite hits Netflix. There’s more trouble in store for the students of Las Encinas with Omar Shanaa (Omar Ayuso) back, Ivan (André Lamoglia) mending a broken heart and Isadora (Valentina Zenere) dealing with her criminal family.

“Stranded with My Mother-in-Law” is a Brazilian reality show on Netflix hosted by Fernanda Souza.

The show follows six couples who are stranded on a desert island with their respective mothers-in-law. The couples must compete in a number of contests to win a life-changing prize, but they must also learn to work together with their mothers-in-law, who are often their biggest rivals.

Reality shows is a television genre that requires and is forced to reinvent itself in each new scenario, by bringing in new elements, and is primarily based on constant surprises and conflicts among the members of the group involved. Thus, conflict becomes the central theme around which everything revolves. Can you imagine a bigger conflict than having to live with your mother-in-law on a desert island?

Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.

Netflix’s October 2023 lineup includes Mike Flanagan’s much-anticipated horror series The Fall of the House of Usher, starring Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, and Kate Siegel. The documentary series Beckham provides a peek into soccer superstar David Beckham’s personal life and soccer career, and Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul delves into the controversial company.

Netflix’s October schedule also includes comedy specials, a new dinosaur series, and season seven of the adult animated comedy Big Mouth.
