Prime Video has been tossing up a healthy mix of streaming "content" of late, and has been seeing success with its diverse slate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley's murder mystery "Killer Heat" dominated Prime Video in October of 2024, which followed the success of the Awkwafina and John Cena comedy "Jackpot!" in August. Now, it's time for the new action thriller "Canary Black" to have a turn.
The movie comes from French filmmaker and "Taken" director Pierre Morel, who has much to answer for simply by virtue of the fact he launched Liam Neeson into his seemingly never-ending grizzled hard-man era (an age that has also produced some of Neeson's worst movies). Now, Morel has turned his sights on poor old Kate Beckinsale, who fronts "Canary Black" as CIA agent Avery Graves. Although the evolution of streaming remains a divisive topic in Hollywood, Paul Feig is not one to turn up his nose at opportunity.
After his latest film Jackpot! premiered on Prime Video in August, the director recently called streaming platforms “a blessing for filmmakers who simply want to get their movies made” amid an ongoing decline in production following last year’s strikes.
“We’d all love to be making theatrical films with big releases but with the studios cutting back on their output, the streamers have really stepped up to let us tell our stories with real budgets,” Feig told Empire.
Feig previously helmed Netflix‘s 2022 adaptation of the Soman Chainani young adult fantasy novel The School for Good and Evil.
Most recently, he directed Jackpot!, which stars Akwafina as Katie, a wannabe actor who, in 2030, wins the lucrative, multi-billion-dollar “Grand Lottery” jackpot. She has until sundown to collect her prize,...

Paul Feig wants critics to know that it’s Ok for an action comedy to just…be an action comedy.
The director said during Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast that his latest film “Jackpot!” was “excoriated” by reviewers. AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.
Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)
It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.
Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 suffered a major viewership drop in its second week on Luminate’s weekly streaming originals chart.
Last week, the Amazon Prime Video series managed to nab second place with 764.7 million minutes watched in the first full week of availability of its first three episodes combined with the first day of availability of its fourth episode. But during the Sept. 6-12 viewing window — which included the first full week of Episode 4 and the first day of Episode 5 — it only hit 372.7 million minutes watched, landing in fourth place. While there was less new content to watch compared to the week before, when the first three episodes has just debuted, it still doesn’t bode well for a large IP title to drop by more than 50% after one week, when word-of-mouth appeal should still be high. It should be noted that Luminate only measures U.

Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.
The dramedy starring Lily Collins gathered 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth overall, but was also down 43 percent from the 1.39 billion minutes for the first week of season three’s release — which featured all 10 episodes of that installment, as opposed to five this time out.
The previous week’s top two shows, Prison Break and The Umbrella Academy, held their spots for the week of Aug. 12-18 — and their numbers were consistent as well. Prison Break actually ticked up a little to 1.61 billion minutes of viewing (versus 1.6 billion the week before), while The Umbrella Academy (1.39 billion) was...

Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 is finding success on streaming after a disappointing theatrical run. Written, directed, produced, and starring Kevin Costner, the Western epic hit theaters earlier this summer, grossing only $36.1 million worldwide and earning mixed reviews from critics. The performance of the first film was so bad, in fact, that Warner Bros. canceled plans to release Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2, which was originally slated to bow in mid-August.
Now, however, data from Reelgood reveals that Horizon: An American Saga ranks as the tenth most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. for the week of August 29 September 4. This marks the second consecutive week Costner's film appeared on Reelgood's chart, with the Western previously ranking fifth. Horizon now falls behind titles like Jackpot! (2024), The Union (2024), The Deliverance (2024), and The Watchers (2024). Check out the full top 10 list below:

If you're a Netflix subscriber, you know how this works by now. A movie debuts in theaters and either nobody goes to see it and/or the critics tear it to pieces, only for the film to see a resurgence in interest when it becomes available for streaming. It happened just recently with the Mike Myers flop "The Cat in the Hat," and would you believe even "Madame Web" saw success when it finally hit Netflix? You probably would, because as Michael Fassbender flop "The Snowman" proved in 2023, Netflix subscribers will pretty much watch anything.
Netflix is the kingmaker among streamers with 277 million subscribers, but Amazon Prime Video's 230 million subs isn't too shabby. As it happens, we have a good example of how a brand new critical flop can become a hit on Prime Video with "Jackpot!," the 2024 action comedy from "Bridesmaids" and "Spy" director by Paul Feig. That’s up from fifth place with 255.3 million minutes watched the week before, though the docuseries was only available for two days during that window.

The first Shang-Chi movie was a notable success for Marvel, resonating well with audiences despite some criticisms of certain plot elements. Given its success, fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel, which Marvel has officially announced.
However, updates on the sequel have been sparse. In response to this, series star Simu Liu, the Canadian actor who plays Shang-Chi, was recently asked about the sequel’s progress. While he didn’t provide specific details, he did share some insights into the current status of the highly anticipated follow-up.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered in 2021, garnering mostly positive reviews and earning $432.2 million against a budget of $150-200 million, marking it as a success. Fans appreciated Marvel’s expansion of its character roster, and Simu Liu’s portrayal of the titular superhero was well-received. Marvel confirmed a sequel would be in the works, but updates have been sparse, leaving some fans concerned.

John Cena says he understands why David Zaslav decided to cancel the release of Coyote vs. Acme after its completion, a corporate line-toeing that aligns with his personal philosophy of, “You can’t see me.”

Awkwafina and John Cena star in this Amazon Prime action comedy, directed by Paul Feig. The plot is flimsy and it lacks a satirical edge, but the two leads have comic chemistry to burn and there’s a steady stream of decent gags.

The only other rule is that you’re not allowed to use guns, which is just as well, or the movie would have been one long shoot-out.

Paul Feig has directed some of the most beloved comedies of the last decade, including “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” several classic episodes of “The Office” and more. So take it from the filmmaker when he explains there’s one key to creating comedy in “the best way” — finding the perfect pair.
It’s something he’s proven skillful at, even when the project falls under a different genre. He brought together Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy on the buddy cop comedy “The Heat,” Henry Golding and Emilia Clarke in the weepy rom-com “Last Christmas,” Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick for the genre-defying “A Simple Favor” — and its impending sequel — and now his new film “Jackpot!” pairs up John Cena and Awkwafina.

"California Girls" by The Beach Boys sets the scene for California Grand Lottery rules in Jackpot! Awkwafina and John Cena lead the cast in an action-packed film with an engaging soundtrack. Memorable moments in the movie are highlighted by songs like "Turtle Power!" and "Spice Up Your Life."
Amazon Prime Video's Jackpot! revolves around a woman unlucky enough to win the lottery in California, but at least a fun soundtrack plays in the background while she runs for her life. Back in 2019, John Cena hadn’t quite found his solid footing in films of Hollywood. Before his fame grew with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Cena was often seen in underrated movies that failed at the box office.

Paul Feig’s new movie Jackpot! was originally called Grand Theft Lotto – but it changed late in the day. Here, he explains why.
Out now on Amazon’s Prime Video service is director Paul Feig’s return to R-rated comedy movies, Jackpot!
Starring Awkwafina and John Cena, the movie leapfrogged the now-shot A Simple Favor 2 in Feig’s queue, given how close to ready Rob Yescombe’s script and the rest of the production was.
Still, when it was first announced that Paul Feig was to direct the film, it was going under a different name: it was initially reported that the movie was called Grand Theft Lotto. In fact, the film went into production under that title, and it was only as it headed towards release did it become apparent that an alteration had been made. Now it was Jackpot!, with an exclamation mark.

Of all the celebrity cameos you might expect to pop up in “Jackpot!”, Machine Gun Kelly probably wouldn’t have been one of them. He becomes a key piece of the movie though and, according to director Paul Feig and movie stars John Cena and Awkwafina, the rapper was “so game” for it.
The new film, now streaming on Prime Video, centers on Katie Kim (Awkwafina), an aspiring actress who just moved to LA. During an audition, she literally wins the lottery but doesn’t know that, in this LA — the movie takes place in a not-so-distant future — the lottery is a lot more violent.
That’s because, here, those without a winning ticket are legally allowed to murder the winner and take over their payout, so long as the murder happens before sundown, and isn’t completed using a gun. Enter Noel (Cena), an independent bodyguard who’s willing...

Cena said that he chooses to believe it was shelved for the right reasons, because otherwise he would have "tremendous regret and shame." Cena's diplomatic answer may be the result of the star's continued work with Warner Bros. Discovery on Peacemaker season 2.

John Cena proved he has some singing chops in “Ricky Stanicky,” but alas, he doesn’t sing in his new film “Jackpot!” Don’t worry though, the soundtrack still has plenty of winners.
Now streaming on Prime Video, the Paul Feig film — set in the not-so-distant future — follows Katie Kim (Awkwafina), who recently moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of becoming an actor. During an audition, she quite literally wins the lottery. The thing is, the lottery works a bit differently in this version of LA.
Here, whoever wins has to make it to sundown — literally, physically make it to the end of the day alive. Anyone who didn’t win is allowed to legally murder the lottery winner and take over their winnings. Katie, of course, doesn’t know this, having lived in a bit of a bubble in the Midwest for various reasons.

John Cena was one of the many actors involved in Warner Bros.’ now-shelved “Coyote vs. Acme,” and he remains sad about its fate. That said, he is keeping his faith in the process that led to said fate.
The film was officially scrapped back in November, despite being fully finished and screened for some audiences. The decision sparked heavy criticism, both from fans and those involved with the film. In response, the studio walked back the decision in part, allowing the film to be shopped around. In the end, though, as TheWrap exclusively reported in February, Warner Bros. turned down several offers, and “Coyote vs. Acme” remains unreleased.
Speaking to TheWrap ahead of his new film “Jackpot!” — now streaming on Prime Video — Cena opened up about the Hollywood process and how he’s feeling about the decision all these months later.
“There’s a lot there. And everyone’s perspective is different.
