Exclusive: BAFTA-winner Nick Leather is heading inside the National Crime Agency (Nca) and the “most successful law enforcement operation in UK history” for his latest TV project.
Leather has tied with Mood producer Bonafide Films on the as-yet-untitled series, which we are told is in early-stage conversation with potential buyers. Tom Dunbar is producing.
Leather’s drama will reveal the inner workings of the Nca through a story that focuses on the 2020 infiltration of the encrypted phone-system EncroChat, and how it gave the agency a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to decimate the criminal underworld. With a ticking clock, a secret to keep hidden and in the face of unprecedented challenges, the Nca ultimately delivered ‘Operation Venetic’, which Leather and the creative team described as the “most successful law enforcement operation in UK history.” There have been more than 3,400 arrests so far including almost 13,300 years of combined sentencing, and the operation is still ongoing.

Exclusive: ITV is on the hunt for a Mr Bates vs the Post Office successor and has landed on the devastating contaminated blood scandal, with Peter Moffat attached.
Double-BAFTA winner Moffat is writing the untitled series based on what took place in the 1970s and 1980s, which ITV is describing as the “biggest health scandal in our history.”
The drama focuses on how haemophiliacs and those with other blood disorders were contaminated with tainted blood infecting them with HIV and hepatitis. In 2022, a report found that around 1,250 people with bleeding disorders were infected with HIV and that at least a further 2,400 people were infected with Hepatitis C. Around three-quarters of those infected with HIV died and at least 700 infected with Hepatitis C died, the report concluded. An inquiry took place last year with the likes of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak interviewed.

Carlin Glynn, who won a Tony Award in 1979 for originating the role of madam Mona Stangley in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” died July 13 at age 83. Her daughter, “Fried Green Tomatoes” actress Mary Stuart Masterson, announced the news on Instagram.
“On Thursday, July 13, my mother, Carlin Glynn Masterson, passed away. I was with her. I will always be grateful for those last moments, no matter how hard,” Masterson wrote on Sunday. She told the New York Times on Thursday that her mother had been battling lung cancer and dementia.
She remembered her mother as “strong, smart, silly, intuitive, kind, generous, passionate and a deep listener” who was devoted to her late husband, Peter Materson and “the enormous circle of students and collaborators who were considered her chosen family.”
Masterson shared a photo of Glynn from her 80th birthday party, “before the worst of dementia and cancer took their toll.

“Silk” screenwriter Peter Moffat is adapting Jonathan Freedland’s non-fiction book “The Escape Artist,” which tells the true story of two Jews who escaped from Auschwitz.
Margery Bone’s Bonafide Films has secured the rights to Freedland’s book, which is set to be made into a high-end limited series. Bonafide, who have a development and distribution deal with BBC Studios, recently produced Nicôle Lecky’s BAFTA-winning “Mood.”
“The Escape Artist” centers around nineteen-year-old Rudolf Vrba, a Slovakian Jew who manages to escape Auschwitz alongside fellow internee Fred Wetzler, and warn the world about what was happening. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" exists in its own humble, chaotic space in the "Star Trek" canon. As a zany adult animated series, its tone is far different from the rest of the franchise. But, with Lower Decks, you can watch an episode four times and still be missing references and Easter eggs. This is saying something when you also consider that these episodes are half as long as episodes of Discovery or Picard. So, with that in mind, like in the previous episodes, there is almost certainly something we missed in trying to gather all the Easter eggs and references from Lower Decks episode 4, “Moist Vessel.”

During the 2018-19 season hiatus, Star Trek fans were blown away by the production value, narrative depth, and pure guilty pleasure of Star Trek: Short Treks Season 1.
Although Star Trek: Short Treks Season 2 offers more episodes, several are considerably shorter in length and lighter in content.
As a whole, they maintain the visual excellence of Season 1 and even stretch the innovation of the series with two animated episodes.
What the new season does best is provide many fan-pleasing Easter Eggs, homages to well-known classic incidents, and a chance to hang out with the newest incarnations of Spock, Number One, and Pike.

The Short Treks mini-episodes that CBS have been releasing in the run-up to Star Trek Discovery‘s second season have been a little bit up and down in terms of quality. “Calypso” was light years ahead of the rest of them, but even the most forgettable has shone a light into a corner of the Trek universe that doesn’t normally get an airing. Known for his professional career as a magician and his roles in films like Boogie Nights and the HBO series Deadwood, Ricky Jay has died. He was 70.
Details about Jay’s death have not been revealed, but his attorney Stan Coleman confirmed his death while his partner at Deceptive Practices, Michael Weber tweeted, “I am sorry to share that my remarkable friend, teacher, collaborator and coconspirator is gone.”
Richard Jay Potash was born in Brooklyn, New York and had an impressive resume of films. In addition to Boogie Nights and Deadwood, Jay appeared in films such as Magnolia, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Spanish Prisoner, Mystery Men, and, appropriately, the magician drama The Prestige. He was also the subject of PBS’ American Masters in 2015 and was the first magician to be profiled in the series. We learned at San Diego Comic Con that, while Star Trek: Discovery season 2 won't be premiering until next year (no new Spock incarnation until then), we will be getting some stories set in the Disco universe this fall. CBS All Access has made a series of Disco shorts, known as Star Trek: Short Treks, that are set to "air" starting on October 4th, on CBS All Access.

First of all, I'm a sucker for magic! Magic is one of my favorite things in the world. So when I hear there is going to be state of the art live magic show inspired by the Now You See Me film franchise, of course I'm going to get excited!
Lionsgate is producing the magic show, which will be called Now You See Me Live, and it will feature its own Four Horsemen! The show is described as "a state-of-the-art magic show with cutting-edge technology, surprise twists, and never-before-seen illusions from some of the greatest magicians in the world."
I really hope that they end up pulling off some spectacular magic! It would be so cool to see the same level stuff that we actually saw in the movies. As for who the four magicians will be, here are the details:

The studio announced the project on Wednesday, touting the performances as state-of-the-art magic with cutting-edge technology, surprise twists, and never-before-seen illusions from some of the greatest magicians in the world.
The global tour will kick off in China, one of the highest-grossing international markets for the film series, in November. The Works Entertainment are the producers and creative team behind the magic show “The Illusionists.”

Sherlock and EastEnders were among the big winners at the 2014 TVChoice Awards this evening (September 8) at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
It was a good night for the BBC all round as Happy Valley also scooped two prizes, including Best New Drama and Best Actress for Sarah Lancashire.
Sherlock was named Best Drama Series, fending off competition from Call The Midwife, Waterloo Road and Downton Abbey.
Benedict Cumberbatch triumphed in the Best Actor category ahead of Allen Leech (Downton Abbey), David Tennant (The Escape Artist) and Bradley Walsh (Law & Order: UK).
EastEnders won four of the soap prizes, including the prestigious Best Soap award. Ahead of the show's 30th anniversary, the soap was also handed an Outstanding Contribution Award.

BBC Three is to air a fact-based musical drama.
Glasgow Girls will tell the true story of a group of schoolgirls who campaigned to save their friend from deportation, and started a movement that led to a change in immigration laws in Scotland.
The 60-minute drama stars Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot) and Greg Hemphill (Still Game), as well as Kirstie Steele, Erin Armstrong, Letitia Wright, Aruhan Galieva and Olivia Popica.
Brian Welsh (The Escape Artist) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Joe Barton. The drama has been commissioned by the BBC to coincide with its Commonwealth Games programming this summer.

The first half of Masterpiece Mystery’s The Escape Artist was a jumbled but ultimately entertaining crime thriller with some intriguing twists and exceptional acting by leads David Tennant and Toby Kebbell. It was far from perfect though- there were one too many questions concerning Kebbell’s psychopath Liam Foyle. He was a terrifying character, expertly acted but his motivations were sketchy and it was hard to relate to his actions because of that.
“Episode 2” is a more tightly wound episode than the first part, which it’s a big improvement over. The episode’s early courtroom scenes are fascinating and well put together; so are the quiet periods. Watching Will (David Tennant) and his son adjust after Foyle...

Tennant plays Will Burton, a talented junior barrister who’s never lost a case. He doesn’t particularly like the people he’s defending, but his career choice has been good to him. It’s given his family, sweet and understanding wife Kate (Ashley Jensen) and curious son Jamie (Gus Barry), a modern flat in the city and a quaint cottage in the country.
