A military expert gives high marks for realism to the critically panned Shia Labeouf movie Man Down. Released in 2015, Man Down concerned a Marine (Labeouf) returning to his hometown after a tour in Afghanistan and finding America mysteriously devastated. Grossing just $167,000 worldwide, the film was eviscerated by critics, a fact reflected in its current 16% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Man Down may not have worked for critics or audiences at the time of its release, but the Labeouf war movie does have more than a few redeeming qualities according to one military expert. In a video for Insider, urban warfare researcher John Spencer broke down the film’s combat scenes, and gave it high marks for its depiction of the devastation wrought by IEDs, its portrayal of weapon use and its accurate reflection of real urban combat tactics. One thing did bother Spencer however: a mule kick a soldier uses to knock down a door.

Rik Mayall wasn’t just a comedy genius, he was at the fundamental core of British comedy from the 80s’ until his untimely death. ‘Al Pacino: The Movies Behind The Man’ author and broadcaster, Mark Searby sheds light into the creative work of the man in his new book ‘Rik Mayall: Comedy Genius’.
With a career born from frustrations, opinions and political strains of the working class in the 1980s, Mayall and a motley crew of young fresh talent led the uprising of alternative comedy. Taking a lead from Punk music, they took no prisoners. It was politically incorrect, anarchic and stuck two fingers up to the establishment and furthermore, it stood for something. In its new form, Mayall and his compadres had made comedy into a vessel to speak freely and represent the feelings of a fresh, passionate and raw new generation, something that has since been remixed...

Call it the Shianaissance, but Shia Labeouf is igniting an indie box office revival.
Labeouf further proved his on-screen bankability last weekend as his autobiographical drama “Honey Boy” kicked off above expectations, garnering $288,824 from four venues in New York and Los Angeles. That haul marks one of the best starts for a platform release this year with ticket sales equating $72,206 per location. Other strong theater averages in 2019 include A24’s “The Farewell”, Disney’s “Avengers: Endgame” and Neon’s “Parasite”.
“It really shows how important a slow theatrical rollout can be,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore. “The time of year matters as well. We are in the heart of awards season. ‘Honey Boy’ isn’t duking it out with big named blockbusters in a wide release, it’s doing its own thing.”

The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival has officially gotten underway. Coming to the cinematic world between the meat market of the Sundance Film Festival every January and the prestige of the Cannes Film Festival every May, the fest is hitting at arguably the perfect time. Each and every April for the last 16 years, Tribeca has showcased a wife variety of (mostly) independent movies, some of which can struggle to see the light of day, while others fare better and break through. Still, there’s always a gem or two in the lineup, along with even the occasional Academy Award nominee. That should still be the case in 2019, so now is a solid time to take a look at some of what Tribeca has to offer for this year. Last year, two of the best movies ever to play the festival hit in All About Nina and Disobedience. They were joined by the...

Cineville has attached writer-director Dito Montiel to the independent dramatic thriller “Afterward,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Production is planned to start in the spring of 2019. Producers are Thomas D. Adelman, production manager on “The Usual Suspects”; Elizabeth Gast Napolitano; Frederic Demey (“Female Fight Squad”) and Carl Colpaert.
The story centers on a father’s struggle to deal with the passing of his daughter, which leads him on a quest for truth and justice against corruption and small town politics.
Montiel made his feature directorial debut on 2006’s “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” followed by “Fighting,” “The Son of No One,” “Empire State,” “Boulevard,” “Man Down,” and “The Clapper.”
“I’m excited to have Cineville behind me as we guide ‘Afterward’ into production,” he said. “While I’m hardly said to have a particular style or type of film I gravitate towards, ‘Afterward’ represents a challenging change of direction and a personal project for me,...

For more than a year, Rihanna and her label Roc Nation have been hunting for beats as they work to complete an album devoted to exploring the singer’s Caribbean roots, according to conversations with eight sources close to the project. In addition, two of those sources suggest that the singer is simultaneously at work on another pop-oriented album.
Rihanna first mentioned the possibility of releasing a reggae-centric album publicly during a Vogue profile for the June issue, but her and her potential collaborators have been quiet ever since. The magazine suggested that Supa Dups,...

On the final of “The Four” on Feb. 8, Evvie McKinney pulled off a stunning upset by winning over frontrunner Zhavia. Heading into the night, Zhavia was the top pick of a whopping 76% of our readers while McKinney managed a mere 12% of the vote. The other two finalists — Candice Boyd and Vincint Cannady — earned just 8% and 4% respectively. If you haven’t voted in our poll yet, be sure to do so at the bottom of this post and then sound off in the comments section about this new reality competition series hosted by Fergie.
McKinney was named iHeartRadio’s “On the Verge” artist and was signed to Republic Records. That label’s head of talent, Charlie Walk, had been a judge on the first five episodes of this new reality competition series but he stepped aside following allegations of inappropriate behavior.

Sean Combs, DJ Khaled and Meghan Trainor crowned 20-year old Evvie McKinney the first-ever winner of “The Four: Battle For Stardom” on Thursday, February 8. The gritty R&B singer wowed the panel with her fearless performances and powerful voice. In addition to the title, Evvie was named iHeartRadio’s “On the Verge” artist and was awarded a recording contract with Republic Records. But do you agree with the panel’s decision? Or did you think Candice Boyd, Vincint Cannady or Zhavia gave the superior performance at the finale? Vote in our poll below.
Evvie was the last challenger to audition on “The Four” Season 1, making her first appearance just last week. But her undeniable energy on the stage made her impossible to forget. She sang “Rise Up” for her first song and the panel instantly wondered if they had a star on their hands. Any doubt was erased after she...

"Who is The Clapper?" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Clapper, the latest from director Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting, The Son of No One, Man Down). The Clapper is about a man, played by Ed Helms, who enjoys his job to be paid to fill seats in infomercial audiences. But when a talk late night TV talk show host discovers and makes fun of him, his whole life gets turned upside-down. Very weird concept for a film, but this trailer actually makes it look kind of amusing, with a sweet side. The cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Tracy Morgan, P.J. Byrne, Charles Halford, and Leah Remini. This probably isn't what you're expecting, but doesn't look too bad. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dito Montiel's The Clapper, direct from YouTube: Eddie is a guy who gets paid...

Over a decade ago, Dito Montiel made a well received indie movie, “A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints,” but ever since has largely been failing upwards. A string of movies have followed, that find him working with decent names (Dwayne Johnson, Shia Labeouf, Kate Mara, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Juliette Binoche) but all them have failed critically or commercially or both (“The Son Of No One,” “Empire State,” “Boulevard,” “Man Down“).

The first trailer has dropped for Shia Labeouf’s next film, “Borg/McEnroe.” Directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, the biopic tells the story of the famous rivalry between Swedish tennis superstar Björn Borg and his biggest opponent, American player John McEnroe, during 1980’s Wimbledon Championships. Labeouf stars as McEnroe, while Sverrir Gudnason (“Monica Z,” “Gentlemen”) plays Borg. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård and Tuva Novotny.

Shia Labeouf is exiling himself.
For his next trick, the actor-turned-performance artist will spend a month living alone in a cabin in the remote Lapland region of Finland, the Associated Press reports. His only form of communication with the outside world will come via text message to visitors of a Helsinki museum.
The project, called #Alonetogether, is set to include Nastja Ronkko and Luke Turner, the other two members of his art collective. Beginning Wednesday, all three will begin living alone in separate cabins in Finland.
Visitors to the Kiasama museum in Helsinki can communicate with Labeouf, Ronkko and Turner via text message.

Shia Labeouf is taking some time for himself.
Beginning Wednesday, the 30-year-old actor will be spending a month alone in a remote cabin located in Finland, Switzerland, and will only be able to communicate with the outside world via text message. Visitors of the Kiasama museum in Helsinki will be able to text Labeouf, along with members of his art collective, Nastja Ronkko and Luke Turner, who will be in separate cabins nearby.

That’s quite the gutter talk you’re spouting, Shia Labeouf. In what we’re assuming isn’t one of Labeouf’s many baffling performance-art projects, the “Eagle Eye” star was captured on video Wednesday going off on a bartender at Pinz Bowling Center in Studio City, California, calling the employee a “f—ing racist.” TMZ reports that Labeouf was ushered from the establishment after shouting at the employee. As they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity.
After becoming the subject of ridicule following an opening weekend in the U.K. in which it attracted a solitary cinemagoer (a debut of $8.20), the Shia Labeouf starrer Man Down experienced something of a midweek surge.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, two additional tickets had been sold at the one theater showing the film (and only once a day), the Reel Cinema in the town of Burnley. This figure had reportedly risen to five by Wednesday evening.

Yes, you read it right, it’s not just Sir Ian McKellen and a football club currently punching above its weight in the Premier League that the Lancashire town is famous for, because you can now add a rather dubious honour to that list. Shia Labeouf’s latest vehicle, war thriller Man Down, premiered in just one UK theatre – Reel Cinema, Burnley – with a single ticket making up the sum total of the box office revenue.
This means that the movie has now grossed a whopping £7 in Britain, which in today’s market equates to a whole $8.70 – gulp.
It is thought that the main reason for this catastrophic performance is that the film was released simultaneously on demand and digitally. However, the fact that it is going to DVD and Blu-ray as early as next month could provide a big clue. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, but...

Shia Labeouf's newest film really didn't hit in the U.K.
Man Down, which also stars Kate Mara, Gary Oldman and Jai Courtney, sold just three tickets across the pond, bringing in $26, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The box office is astonishingly low, even when considering the film only screened in one theater, and could be a result of poor reviews (it currently has a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes), and the subject of the movie being more American-centered -- a U.S. soldier suffering Ptsd. Though, the film also under-performed stateside, pulling in only $454,490 during its limited December 2016 run.
As for the U.K. theater screening the film, the movie is set to be pulled on Thursday.

Man Down, indeed. Shia Labeouf‘s post-apocalyptic war thriller may have opened in the United States last year to negative reviews and an anemic $454,490 but that’s much better than the mere £7 that Man Down made in the United Kingdom on its opening weekend. That’s the equivalent one movie ticket. Though to be fair, the […]

Shia Labeouf’s war drama “Man Down” made headlines Tuesday after selling only one ticket during its UK opening weekend, grossing a total of £7 ($8.73), per ComScore. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has sold an extra two tickets, making its total gross $26.19.

Shia Labeouf needs to press the reset button. The once-bright new face from 2007’s franchise-kickstarting “Transformers” reached a career lowlight over the weekend when “Man Down,” the drama in which he plays a former U.S. Marine suffering from Ptsd, sold exactly one ticket in the U.K. The film has since picked up two more patrons, bringing the total number of tickets sold to three.
It’s worth noting that “Man Down” is booked for just one showing per day in one theater in Burnley, England, and brought in a little more than $450,000 after opening in the U.S. last December, but the film’s dismal U.K. opening is illustrative of the precipitous decline Labeouf’s acting career has taken in recent years.

Well, at least they tried... Shia Labeouf's new film Man Down will end it's week-long run in the United Kingdom after extremely dismal sales. The film—which follows the actor as a U.S. soldier returning home from Afghanistan who is suffering from Ptsd—sold one, single ticket during it's opening day in the U.K. In all fairness, it only opened in one theater (a branch of the Reel Cinema chain in the town of Burnley) and has only been shown once a day. Since then, it's garnered a 200-percent box-office leap as two more people bought tickets in the days to follow. Labeouf’s new film Man Down took a measly amount on its opening weekend, but he’s not the only famous face to fail badly at the box office
Some of you might know that Shia Labeouf still makes films, despite his reputation as an art-pop prank gone haywire, a kind of weaponised James Franco. Actually, that’s an exaggeration. One of you might know that Shia Labeouf still makes films.
Man Down, Labeouf’s new film, opened in the UK last week, and its opening weekend theatrical gross was £7. Not £7m. Not even £700. But a mere £7. Given that an adult ticket in my non-London cinema costs £12.60, it is safe to assume that the only person who saw Man Down last weekend was a solitary toddler with an Nus card who somehow qualifies for a state pension. Admittedly, the film was only shown in one cinema, in Burnley, before it...

Here in the United States, we’ve cautiously re-accepted Shia Labeouf into our good graces thanks to his self-aware attempts to get his life back on track, his excellent performance in Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, and his naïvely optimistic anti-Trump art projects, but things are a bit different in the United Kingdom. Over there, they apparently still think of him as the drunken rabble-rouser from the Transformers movies or—even worse—the guy who ruined the Indiana Jones series, because his film Man Down premiered in the U.K. over the weekend and literally nobody went to see it.
Well, not literally. According to Variety, the movie did manage to gross £7, which is about the price of a single movie ticket. In Man Down’s defense, it did only open in a single theater, and that one guy who bought a ticket might’ve smelled really bad or ...

This wasn’t the kind of singular hit that Shia Labeouf was hoping for.
The controversial actor’s new film Man Down earned £7, or $8.71, during its U.K. opening this past weekend — the value of a single ticket in the U.K., according to multiple reports.
Box-office tracking firm ComScore reported on the gross of the film, which played in one theater: Reel Cinema, in the town of Burnley in northwest England. According to Variety, the film was also released simultaneously on demand, ahead of its home-video berth in May.

If Shia Labeouf ever does a sequel to #Allmymovies in the UK, he could double the total viewership of “Man Down” on the other side of the pond. The actor’s war drama opened at exactly on theater in the town of Burnley over the weekend and sold exactly one ticket — comScore reported a gross of just £7 ($8.70). At least ticket prices are still reasonable there.

Stories like this come around every so often — the Katherine Heigl thriller “Zyzzyx Road” grossed just $30 back in 2006, for instance — but attracting five or six viewers is still preferable to just one. “Man Down” fared considerably better during its domestic run, bringing in a little more than $450,000 after opening here last December.

Ouch.
“Man Down,” a war thriller with Shia Labeouf, grossed just £7 ($8.70) when it premiered in a single U.K. theater over the weekend, according to ComScore. That’s the equivalent of selling a single ticket, given that the U.K. Cinema Association puts the average movie admission cost in the country at £7.21.
“Poor Shia,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “That opening could be in the Guinness World Records or something.”
The film played in one location, Reel Cinema in Burnley. It was simultaneously released digitally on demand, making the theatrical release something of an afterthought. It launches on DVD and Blu-ray next month, according to the Guardian.

A man down indeed.
Over the weekend, Shia Labeouf-starrer Man Down sold only one ticket in its limited U.K. opening at a cinema in Burnley. That's according to comScore, which reported a gross of £7, or $8.70.
Man Down debuted simultaneously on digital platforms in the U.K., meaning it was never going to be a big earner in theaters. But no one expected only one ticket sale. As of Tuesday, the Reel Cinema in Burnley was still carrying Man Down, which also stars Gary Oldman, Jai Courtney and Kate Mara.

Shia Labeouf won't be dividing anyone in the U.K. 'cause almost everyone over there agrees ... they're just not that into his new movie. Shia's indie flick, "Man Down," squeaked out 1 ticket sale at a theater in Burnley, England ... according to comScore. That's a weekend haul of £7 ... or $8.70 for the debut weekend. We'd say word of mouth might boost week 2 sales, but the movie also scored 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. On a positive note ... "Man Down...

Belle beats Smurfs and The Boss Baby, but Ghost in the Shell and Free Fire lose out, and Labeouf’s Man Down manages a not-so-magnificent £7
The start of the UK’s Easter school holidays saw the arrival on Friday of Smurfs: The Lost Village, plus preview screenings on Saturday and Sunday of The Boss Baby. However, Beauty and the Beast (starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast) shrugged off those challengers, easily holding on to the UK top spot with third-weekend takings of £6.75m, and a 17-day total of £51.4m. That’s enough to put the Disney flick in 25th place in the all-time UK box office rankings, ahead of the lifetime totals of films such as Quantum of Solace (£51.1m) and The Dark Knight (£48.9m).

‘The Founder’ Review: Michael Keaton Is the Best Thing About This Overcooked McDonald’s Origin Story
![Michael Keaton in The Founder (2016)](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMzExNDg0MDk1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzE1Mjg0MDI@._V1_QL75_UX140_CR0,0,140,207_.jpg)
As Michael Keaton settles into the peak era of his acting career, his wizened features and melancholic gaze make him perfectly suited for subtle desperation. It was only a matter of time before he channeled the plight of a struggling salesman, and “The Founder” provides the actor with that ideal vessel.
As Ray Kroc, the McDonald’s executive who swindled the franchise’s founders out of their stake in the company, Keaton effectively swings from Willie Loman to Walter White. The movie gives him just enough material to elevate an otherwise straightforward drama that, while littered with smart and subtle moments, has all the depth of a Wikipedia entry. “The Founder” provides some intriguing backstory to a franchise largely taken for granted in American society, and Robert Siegel’s screenplay carries it along well enough through all the expected beats. Keaton, however, makes them credible. It’s his show.

Last month Shia Labeouf showed off his freestyle rapping skills during SiriusXM Shade 45’s “Sway in the Morning.” Now the actor is back with a new rap, a response to a feud that began with Soulja Boy. The rapper tried to ban Shia from Atlanta and told him to “stick to acting” after Shia called him out on his previous track “Zapruder,” released last week on the New York radio show “The Breakfast Club.”
Then on Monday (December 5), Labeouf released a quick response in which he talks about the feud and also declares that he’ll make a point to visit Atlanta “when [his] schedule is flexible.” In getting his point across, Shia compares himself to Marlon Brando and Stanley Kubrick, as well as notes his latest film role in the biopic “Borg/McEnroe.”
“I just finished playing tennis like I’m John McEnroe,” he raps. “Compare me to Brando, Eminem,...

Hitting theatres today is the tense drama Man Down, which deals with how the horror of war affects those fighting it. Jumping back and forth in time – and packing an intriguing twist – the story focuses on Gabriel Drummer (Shia Labeouf), who joins the U.S. Marines with his best friend Devin (Jai Courtney) and ends up being sent to Afghanistan for a tour.
Gabriel leaves behind his wife, Natalie (Kate Mara) and young son, but promises them he’ll return. While in Afghanistan though, a tragic incident occurs that badly scars Gabriel. He returns home, but finds that things have drastically changed and becomes desperate to reunite with his wife and son.
Earlier this week, we sat down for an exclusive chat with Jai Courtney to talk about the relevancy of the story, what he learned from playing his role and what is was like working with Shia Labeouf.

The world is a vast and wonderful place, filled with inexplicable and peculiar things, and one of them is the career of musician-turned-model-turned-author-turned-director Dito Montiel. Perhaps with a backstory as colorful as his it’s inevitable that the first Dito Montiel film, “A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints,” which was adapted by Dito Montiel from a book by Dito Montiel based on the life of 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer — naw, just kidding, based on the life of Dito Montiel — was going to be his best.

With just a few weeks to go in 2016, it’s time to hit the sand with another film set in the (seems like) ongoing hotspot of the world, the Middle East. And while the recent Allied was set in the days of the second world war, this one deals with the current conflict. This time of year has been the release time for several of those armed forces features. Winter of 2013 had Lone Survivor while the following year American Sniper was a surprise box office smash. Odd, that this year we’ve seen three comedies use the war as a backdrop. There was Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, War Dogs, and Billy Lynn’S Long Halftime Walk (it might be a comedy, who knows?). But things are very grim and dour as Shia La Beouf reunites with writer/director Dito Montiel nearly ten years after A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints for the drama Man Down.
